Sooners Ready to Bounce Back After Oregon

For the love of God, I am SO tired of hashing and re-hashing the debacle in Eugene last Saturday where an incompetent official decided to either outright screw the Sooners or this individual was so stupid that he could not rule on one of the most basic football principles in the game. One of our WWE TV crew members was one of the tape operators who worked in ABC’s Production truck at Oregon and he told me Sunday in Toronto that the replay official saw up to 4 and maybe 5 different angles of the blown onside kick call and that there was conclusively NO technical issues to prevent this former 28 year Pac 10 official from making the obvious correct call. No, the replay official is playing the sympathy card and because of OU’s deserved outrage, the national media has made the replay official, Gordon Riese, the victim and Oklahoma University the spoiled bully in this perverse equation. What in the hell is wrong with this picture? I am sorry that Mr.Riese has high blood pressure but lots of us suffer from the same. Mr. Riese points out on numerous occasions that his wife has the job of being a nurse. That’s a very honorable profession to say the very least but it isn’t as if Mrs.Riese is the only nurse in Oregon. Now the 64 year old replay official who no doubt has many personal, university of Oregon friends who live not far from Riese’s home in Portland has decided to take a leave of absence from his replay duties for the balance of the season. That’s the best call Riese has made this season. I only wish his pals who actually worked the game including Mike Belotti’s high school “acquaintance” the crew chief of the OU-Oregon game would do the same. It was a bad day at Black Rock but now we move forward. We cannot change history but we can make history if this team starts paying up to their potential and, gasp, runs the table. It could happen. The odds are against it but it could happen. I suspect the Sooners will be moderately P.O.’ed this Saturday night against Middle Tennessee State as one would have to assume that the Duck Debacle would have left our team in a fighting mood. Perhaps OU will rediscover the alleged lost swagger this Saturday and carry it forward for the balance of the season. I may be an eternal optimist when it comes to OU Football but so be it. No game is a guaranteed victory and if OU has an Oregon hangover this Saturday night could have several scary moments. The Sooners need to start out with a sense of urgency from the get go and not let up until Coach Stoops calls off the dogs. The Sooner defense needs to become carnivores. For the national media to say that Adrian Peterson has little or no chance of winning the Heisman Trophy is simply stupid. How can any one with a minuscule amount of intelligence watch AD play and not see that OU’s # 28 isn’t one of the best running backs ever in the college game? ESPN’s Game Day crew annoys me as all of them want to be “rock stars” and not football guys. Hey, we do sports entertainment in the WWE but for my two cents ESPN should do sports, period. Sports itself is entertaining but this is the era of the controversial soundbite which seems to be the obsession of every talking head on TV sports. I think OU will cover the spread (28) but my biggest concern is getting any unnecessary injuries as we are two weeks and counting until October 7 and the showdown in Dallas against the Steers. Oklahoma State has a tough one this week on the road in Houston. I look for lots of points to be scored in this one and if OSU can defeat a decent Houston team away from Stillwater then the Pokes have taken the major steps forward many think. I think OSU is much improved and Mike Gundy is doing a great job re-building the Cowboys after jovial Les Miles bolted so I am going with the Cowboys to win the game. Tulsa travels to Annapolis to play the Naval Academy with Navy favored by 5 or 6. Because Navy runs the option which is hard to defend when a team doesn’t see it that much and even harder to replicate in practice, I am going with Navy to win this game but it could be by a field goal. I hope TU can pull it off but it won’t be easy against the disciplined Midshipmen. TU’s head man, Steve Kragthorpe, is a keeper but I don’t think TU will be able to keep this outstanding young coach much longer. Iowa State will play Texas closer than the 21 point spread even in Austin. Ohio State, clearly the best team in the nation at this time, will dominate Penn State and Notre Dame will rebound against Michigan State as John L Smith gets closer to being fired so he can be replaced by anyone hoops coach Tom Izzo prefers namely Steve Mariucci. I hope Mike Stoops Arizona team plays USC off the Trojans’ feet this Saturday. There is no doubt that ‘Zona will be pumped and will play with reckless abandon but the talent depth on the USC side is scary. Arizona upsetting pretty Pete Carroll’s squad would be awesome but it would also be the upset of the year. The good news is the game is in Tucson and if Coach Mike can keep this one close into the 4th quarter who knows what might happen? Take care and keep those emails coming. Our on line store should be open any day now. I hope you will order and try our sauces and some of our Slobber-Knocker merchandise which is perfect for any football fan. Have a safe weekend! J.R.

almost as big a crime as OU going to the BCS championship when after they got drilled in the Big 12 Championship by K-State.
JR, I found what appears to be a human finger in the tailgate platter I ordered from you for MTSU. Had a ring on it commemorating Oregon's 1994 Rose Bowl season. Should I contact the authorities or do you have a complaint desk?
Dear Mr. Ross, I know that you probably can't speak for the people above you in rank in Conneticiut but, I am interested to know what the people in the company think about Kurt going to TNA. I was watching the show last night , and was waiting for the "Major Announcement" to be named. Quite honestly , I was also waiting for it to be a major let down. It seems that in the last 2 years the 2 rival companies (WWE & TNA respectively) haven't really delivered on their announcements. Anyways, When we saw that video package of Kurt in TNA, we all leaped and thought of how amazing this is going to be for TNA & for the competition between shows. However, One has to wonder If Kurt has jumped in too soon. After I was excited, A feeling of uneasyness set over me. I can't help but worry about Kurt. I don't know if he should be getting into the ring so soon. Especially with a company that prides itself on giving opportunities to youngsters. Some youngsters that don't have that much seasoning & that came make mistakes a LOT easier. Sorry , for the lost reply.
What are your thoughts on Kurt Angle signing with TNA? I was completely shocked! His WWE legacy will forever be tarnished!
jr did u hear bout angle going to tna i thought for sure he was coming back to wwe after his injuries healed ? whut happened.
Hey, JR! Looking forward to the BBQ sauce. Now then, college football: Sorry 'bout that Oregon thing, though I'm sure you'd agree that 1) bad calls happen to everyone, eventually and 2) that the best teams find a way to overcome them when they do. As a USC fan myself, I was sorely tempted to harp on the Vince Young lateral (with his knee already on the turf)/TD in the Rose Bowl... but that wasn't what beat the Trojans, you know? It was all the other plays where we couldn't get a stop when we needed one. And, in one crushing instance, where we couldn't pick up a 4th & 1 first down. All OU has to do in my mind is beat Texas. You see, like any good SoCal resident, I hate UT and so I root for the Sooners whenever they don't play 'SC (and also because of my favorite wrestling announcer, naturally). If you guys can beat Texas, you'll have the year you want. (and after all, who else is going to beat you? Baylor? :) I figure the winner of that game wins the Big 12, because no one's gonna step up in the north. Quick question: How big is the buzz at WWE over young Laurinaitis' explosion? Based on what we've seen so far, he's NFL-bound for sure, but I'd be some people are interested in a possible wrestling career for that guy, too. What's your take?
Great Column ! being a UK resident i found this an interesting read. Ben
With all due respect JR, Oklahoma lost that game no doubt about it. Giving up 500+ yards....let the Ducks score 2 TD's, and then got a field goal blocked. Let's face it. The Gods didn't want Oklahoma to win that game. Just like in life when something bad happens, there is no instant replay. It's just a fact of life that people get screwed. Remember back in 2001 when the Ducks had one loss (a comeback win from a very good Stanford team), Nebraska had one loss (to a Colorado team that BLEW them out) yet the BCS let Nebraska into the National title game against Miami and Oregon ended up facing the SAME Colorado team that creamed Nebraska? Well, what ended up happening? Oregon CREAMED the Colorado team that CREAMED Nebraska, and Nebraska got CREAMED by Miami. Everybody gets screwed. Face the facts. And also, it's high time you took over Johnny Ace's duties again. Atleast you might wise up and sign Bryan Danielson.
Too bad OU doesn't know how to kick a field goal.
JR, I hate that OU got screwed. I myself am a Clemson grad, and remember going through horrendous officiating game after game, season after season with the ACC officials during the 80s. Regarding Adrian, I hate it he's not looked at as being a Heisman contender by the sports media at large. These days, it seems the only pool the sportswriters draw from on Heisman candidates are only those that play for top-10 teams. I think that's wrong because they don't base it on individual performance, the player has to be on a top-ranked team, and that's sad. If these writers had the same mentality 25 years ago they have now, George Rogers would've never been a candidate, much less a winner. Last year DeAngelo Williams was the 4th all-time leading NCAA rusher, but was only glanced at because he played for Memphis. Now that's a back that could compete with Reggie Bush IMO. I hope USC gets thrashed as well. I'm so sick of hearing all the hype about them, and they haven't even played their 3rd game yet. Sure, they blew out Arkansas and squeaked by #21 Nebraska. But exactly what have they proven this year to warrant THIS much idol worship? Thanks for listening to my rant, JR.
So I see the Vols werent the only ones robbed by a blown call. The difference in the Vols case was kind of their own fault for not having any time outs left. Near the end of the game the Gators had the ball, and were going for a first down that would seal the one point victory, or give the Vols a chance for a last minute come back. The Gators QB ran the ball and appeared to have the first down, but when they showed the replay on TV, it looked like his knee was down before he got to the first down marker. Even Gary Danielson in the booth said it should have been challenged because his knee was down before he got to the marker. However, as you probably know, you have to have a time out to use in order to challenge the call and request a review, which the Vols did not have. But as you say, we go forward. Marshall coming up this week. GO VOLS. I just received the new SI and they say that Oklahoma and Oregon played the most entertaining game of the season to date. Cant wait for the sauce or the merchandise.
I'm from Tucson,AZ and i'll be attending the Arizona-USC game and I can't stress enough how much a win over those damn Trojans would put this city in an uproar. I was really happy to see you gave a shout out to the Cats in this blog, JR. Thanks.
***I’m no Oregon fan (WSU attendee), but had Oklahoma played some better defense, they would not be in a position to be taken down by a bad referee. Adrian Peterson should be in the Heisman race though. Great job with the blog, and can’t wait for the sauce.*** So what you're saying is that in any close, high scoring game it's okay to be screwed by the refs because the losing team should have played better defense? Close games are going to happen to any team. OU played good enough on defense to have won the game without the blown call. Then there was the bogus pass interference call on Oregon's gift drive which could have made a difference. OU did what they had to do to win the game but it was taken from them. There's more to this than we know about. There's something rotten it Autzen.
wow! you are sooooooo tierd of hahing and re-hahing........
First Downs: Oregon 29 OU 19 Total Yards: Oregon501 OU 381 Oregon punted a grand total of 3 times the whole game. The fact that you would have the marbles to say in your article on scout that Oklahoma dominated most the day is laughable. You are lucky you got four gift Turnovers because OU's defense was like swiss cheese. Bad call....yes, but it was pretty obvious who the better team was. Go Ducks!
I found it interesting that a few major football writers (Jason Whitlock at ESPN, for one) have said they're going to keep voting in the polls as if OU had won, and was undefeated. It should be worth watching to see, towards BCS time, whether this sort of attitude wins out or whether people look at the official win/loss records. The article mentioned above is at this link: (item 2 of his 10 truths) http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=whitlock/060921
As Oregon Duck on another blog of yours, I feel I should respond here. Mr. Ross, with all due respect, yes, the officials blew the call on the onside kick. I'm not sure ANYBODY can debate that at this point. So if the Ducks don't score, that puts them down by six, correct? Okay, so we take away that score because of a bad non-call. Now, earlier in the game, when the OU receiver pushed off the Duck cornerback in front of the official, there was no call made there. So we'd have to essentially take that touchdown away too because it was also a non-call. So the Ducks don't win 34-33....they actually win 27-26 :) feel free to debate that point. you have my email JR ;)
When games are played and million dollar stakes, coaches careers, and many other things are on the line, "homer" officals have no place on the field or in a replay booth. Third party officials should be mandatory for inter-conference games. I honestly believe I haven't seen as many critical errors by an officiating crew since the 1972 Olympics Gold Medal game between the U.S. and Russia.
HI From the California Desert... This is no longer about a win or a loss, it's about whats good for College Football. I hope that you or someone will hang in long enough to find the Truth - College Football needs the Truthful answer.... Keep Rockin' RL
Hello my friend, First things first...thank you for the picture. You are....I can't find the word(s).Second...is their another way to email you besides jrsbarbq.com?I can't get through.I did not see the game, but judging from your analysis,I'm glad I didn't.It looked like AD had a good game.Officiating has been terrible in sports in general. Thanks for making me a fan of Sooner football. My friend was a star of the basketball program a few years ago.His name is Aaron McGhee.Take care.

Damn good post JR. It really was insane how badly blown the call was. I love the story about the co-worker in the WWE who told you a good story. Nice to hear your take on the whole situation.
Go to TNA JR you would be great their
