J.R.'s Family Bar-B-Q

‘Tis the Season for...Feedback...Random Thoughts

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and that the majority of you are able to spend quality time with family and friends. In our materialistic world, we often times don’t spend enough time with our loved ones and dear friends which we all realize when they are gone. Don’t hesitate to spend time with people you care for and don’t hesitate to pick up the telephone today or any time during the holiday season to make one phone call to someone special and let them know that they are special. I can assure you that these matters are so much more important than who’s leaving what company, what superstar is unhappy, why isn’t this person getting a “push”, what is the main event for Wrestlemania, etc. I got a beautiful text message last night from Roddy Piper who seems to be doing well in his battle with cancer. I have the utmost respect for Rowdy Roddy and even through all the controversial periods of his life Roddy was always straight up with me and we never “butted heads” because our relationship was based strictly on honesty and respect. Too many management/wrestler relationships these days are based solely on business and politics which is a fragile way to establish a personal foundation of trust and mutual respect. Bottom line it won’t work over the long haul. Every year managing highly motivated and often times paranoid athletes changes in style and tone but it still will always come back to one being honest and treating people with respect. That’s what I tried to do over the years and I am sure some wrestlers will agree with me on that one and some will disagree as I was the one who hired and fired many wrestlers during my tenure as head of Talent Relations for the WWE. Quite frankly, there were wrestlers who deserved to be cut loose and there were others that did not deserve the pink slip. And no, I won’t get into names on this matter at this time. Stone Cold is enjoying the holidays with his family down in Edna, Texas. Steve has communicated with me several times over the past few weeks with the exploits of his deer and elk hunting trip in south Texas. For a business that doesn’t allow lasting friendships to foster, I know that I will always have Steve’s friendship to depend upon and visa versa. There are no greater gifts in our lives than family and friends and I have been blessed with both. Steve and I had planned on celebrating New Year’s Eve together with a big party in Phoenix prior to the Fiesta Bowl but those plans changed with the January 1 Raw from Miami. Maybe next year. We are excited to be opening our first “J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q Restaurant” in Norman, Oklahoma just off I-35 and Main Street hopefully in April 2007. If the first one works we certainly plan on rolling out other locations. Getting the sauces in grocery stores is another matter as the “big boys” have much of the available shelf space spoken for. Many of you write about the old UWF Wrestling Promotion which featured some great athletes who thrived on physicality. Bill Watts ran his company like a pro sports franchise and therefore was able to get the maximum results of the individuals who wrestled for the “Big Cowboy”. The talent roster of the UWF would match up with most any organization in the world. Losing JYD and Hacksaw Jim Duggan to the WWE was a blow but we worked through it because fans are always interested in NEW stars being developed and featured. Some of wrestling’s most famous names cut their teeth in the UWF in their formative years and took what they learned to the next level, the WWE and WCW, and helped the WWE become the global phenomenon it is today. I am not sure I am buying PWI’s 8 “equal” World Champions that they recognize. Sounds kind of watered down to me but then again I might be wrong. Just my two cents. We are asked quite often about our Bar-B-Q business in Toronto and my honest answer is “who knows”? I hope we can grow our business that far north of Oklahoma and I “never say never”. Toronto is one of my favorite cites that’s for sure so why not?? I have been getting a fair amount of emails regarding RVD. I don’t know that RVD has “heat” on him as pronounced as people seem to speculate or if Rob has any “heat” on him at all for not traveling to Baghdad. It is a voluntary trip first of all which doesn’t necessarily make those who don’t go the most popular kid in class. Rob is a unique talent and I hope he stays in the WWE and continues to do well. Again, the final decision as to what RVD does with his future is Rob’s call but this issue isn’t something that a better line of communications wouldn’t solve in my humble opinion. Is it possible that I could ever do OU Football play by play on radio? I assume it is possible but the voice of OU Football, Bob Barry Sr., is in his 70s and has been the voice of the Sooners since I was a young man. So, bottom line, the job isn’t available and I happen to really like Bob Senior but if the job ever came I would definitely be interested as I could do that and do RAW. Does Jerry Lawler deserve to be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely! The sooner the better. Lawler is not only one of the best wrestlers/talkers ever but also one of the best broadcasters too. Jerry is like a brother to me and I would be honored to see him be inducted sooner than later. I have no issues with short term contracts for veteran wrestlers and don’t think the WWE does either. The only downside to this arrangement is that it does take a certain length of time to get issues established on TV and just about the time the issue is established the contract is virtually up. It’s a two edged sword but it is all doable. I have not taken up playing our video games. Do you think I would enjoy it or am I past my video game playing prime? Brock Lesnar pops up on our screen from time to time about his possible return to the WWE. I don’t know the tenor of how Lesnar left exactly although I know it wasn’t altogether positive. I do think that if Brock had a positive attitude and the WWE did likewise there could be a great partnership there. But it takes two to Tango or to make a relationship, business or personal, work so who really knows? Lesnar is physically and athletically gifted that is for sure but all parties have to be comfortable in the “deal” or these reconciliations will not work. Kennedy’s work reminds me, as I have mentioned of a young “Stunning” Steve Austin. Kennedy has “it”. Assuming Kennedy stays healthy, physically and mentally, his future is limitless. Someday Kennedy could be one of the most popular superstars in the WWE if my instincts are accurate. I would love for the WWE to do an event in the Superdome in New Orleans! I have been there for many a Thanksgiving and Christmas and would want to get their early for the FOOD. The Commanders Palace may be the best eatery I EVER frequented plus I LOVE Dookie Chase’s where I once took Muhammad Ali for dinner and he loved it too. I am not involved with the arena booking or routing but the Superdome would be a great stop for a PPV or a RAW. How about them Saints?? I have had many great guests drop by the various announce table and there are too many to mention. Some names pop up in my head including Jim Cornette, Ric Flair, HHH, Michael Hayes, Dick Murdoch, Dusty Rhodes, among others. This would be a nice chapter to include in a book. The Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Kelly Gregg, an OU alum and former multiple time state high school heavyweight wrestling champion might make a helluva WWE Superstar some day. Kelly is only 6 feet tall at 300 plus pounds so he might not fit the “ideal size” the WWE is looking for these days as it relates to height. I do not adhere totally to that “formula” as wrestling greats over the years have come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Kelly Gregg is a stud and the Ravens feature several of my friends from OU on their talented NFL squad. Ah, the WSB AM750 radio days was so much fun. Every Sunday night at 9 eastern we took calls for an hour and had a blast. I followed the legendary voice of the Georgia Bulldogs Larry Munson who hosted the Georgia Bulldog Coaches Show just before our piece of business. Radio is an avenue I plan on exploring in the future. Kevin Nash, before he became a star, was a regular guest on my show because Big Kev could talk. The promoters found out the same later about the former Tennessee hoops star. An Arkansas Mid South/UWF fan asked about traveling the “Land of Opportunity” over the years and I can tell you that we always stopped in Conway because they had a “pitch till you win” buffet for something like $5.95 for all one could eat. It was at a hotel along I-40 and was a “must stop” especially when one was making $25-$40 per day refereeing and that includes paying all one’s expenses out of that money plus paying all one’s personal bills such as rent and groceries. I would have passengers in my vehicle like Danny Hodge and Scandor Akbar, until they turned on each other, who paid me 3 cents a mile which was a life saver in those days. Of course, I did all the driving which could be challenging at times but I was young and learning something new every day. My wrestling education was largely founded on the long car trips listening to a succession of veterans discuss the business while I intently listened and rarely participated in the discussions. I also suffered through the weekly Wednesday night live events in Fort Smith at the Jimmy Lott Sports Arena on Towson Avenue which was an old car dealership that had one shower for the entire roster to utilize. Because I was the only Ref on the card my shower came last and the hot water was LONG gone. Some days our payoffs were supplemented by the hot dogs that were not sold that night and I never made more than $40 dollars for a Ft. Smith shot…ever. It’s called paying dues. I read a great deal about Daniel Rodimer the rookie who has a great “look”. However, I have not seen Rodimer wrestle lately and even though it is great he “looks the part” can he physically and mentally get it done? Dan resembles NY Giant tight end Jeremy Shockey and definitely has potential. “Look” is important but natural talent and the burning desire to be the best is more important in my perspective. I am not saying an out of shape athlete with a great attitude is the tickets as being in great athletic shape is imperative. I just don’t think everyone has to be 6’5” to be star. If everyone is 6”5” then who is “special”. Plus what kind of “motor” does Rodimer and his fellow rookies have? Never discount an athlete’s motor or will to succeed. Independent wrestlers getting payoffs with drugs is pathetic. Recreational drug use and prescription drug abuse is the kiss of death. That includes wrestling, the NFL, the NBA, MLB, showbiz, etc. It’s a sad state of affairs. Sports Entertainment is a WWE coined term that we are asked to use on TV and on WWE platforms. I use wrestling here because I am more comfortable with that term because I am old school and that’s what I grew up on. Small issue but we continue to call John Cena “The Marine” because of the movie and the fact it is still out there producing revenue. It is called marketing and promotion. Plus, I like the hell out of Cena because I know him personally and was in charge of Talent Relations when John was signed. He is one of “my guys”. Shame on me but as legendary Coach Barry Switzer once told me “when you recruit a player and sign him you have recruited him for life.” I agree with that philosophy. Some of you may not be “Cena fans” which is your prerogative but I happen to think the young man is a stud who works his ass off in ways most fans will never hear about. I also think it is “trendy” for some to dis Cena because they perceive it to be cool and edgy. Whatever. Speaking of Cena, his Subway commercials are excellent. I am not sure if he or any other WWE Superstar will be doing others. I hope so. I also like the “Man Law’ commercials HHH has done for Miller Lite Beer even though Burt Reynolds looks more like a Kenny Rogers-like Martian every time I see him. I like JBL’s commentary and he is just grading enough on one’s nerves to stimulate the viewers to listen. Calling Helms’ the best kept secret on Smackdown is a good line. Gregory Helms is a talented kid and the cruiserweights, in general, are underutilized in my humble opinion. Are there communications between the WWE and TNA? Officially, I have no idea. Unofficially, are you serious?! It won’t happen in my life time if I had to make a wager on it. Will Jeff Jarrett ever return to the WWE? Never say never but that would be a long shot and it would have nothing to do with the manner in which he left. I think Double J is busy these days. Is Jack Doan still with the WWE? Absolutely and he is making Danville, Illinois famous as one of Raw’s best referees. I don’t choose to comment on the future management team of the WWE after Mr. McMahon “retires” which will NEVER happen in my opinion. Mr. McMahon will most likely run his company until the day he dies which will probably be when he’s around 100 years old. Is Heyman really done in the WWE? I will believe it when I see it. I suspect Heyman has yet to miss a paycheck since being removed from ECW. Heyman could be reassigned just as easily as not to another area or he could simply part ways with the company. Time will tell but it won’t be a fatal blow to either party. Heyman has written several screen plays he wants to “pitch” and that may be his “calling”. In any case neither party will need a telethon or a fund raiser when it is all said and done. I am as anxious to see who gets selected for this years Hall of Fame. My best guesses and they are merely guesses would be Dusty Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, Ted DiBiase, perhaps Randy Savage if he and the company are willing to cooperate of which I have NO idea, maybe Bob Backlund, a celeb (Aretha Franklin??), a tag team, and a deceased superstar, and maybe another announcer. Hopefully we will have an indication within the next month or so. The ceremony will be in Detroit the night before Wrestlemania. It’s one of my favorite events of the year. What other sports do I watch on TV? Football and more Football. I have all the OU games saved on my DVR from the 2006 season. I like Boxing, too. I watch Poker. I’m a redneck so I find that Nascar is fun to watch. The MLB playoffs and the NBA playoffs often times make it to my TV screen. I even used to be a fan of the old Roller Derby back in the day of Charlie O’Connell and Ann Cavello. Who is going to take J.R.’s place at the announce desk when I retire? First of all, slow down, I am not ready to retire nor am I close to retiring. There is still an adequate amount of fuel left in the tank to get the job done or at least that’s my mindset. I have no idea but it will be someone with NO accent, someone YOUNG, and someone who “looks nice” on TV. In other words everything that I am not. The attempts to replace me on RAW have been well documented and it is inevitable as one can’t travel 51 weeks a year for ever nor do I want to but I am not ready to be kicked to the curb just yet. However, if I do, it has been a beautiful career that has exceeded my wildest expectations. I also realize that I am the last of a dying breed of wrestling broadcasters who cut their teeth in the territory system which any successor will not have the luxury of doing. My only hope is that whomever is hired is a bonafide fan and not just a person who says he is a fan to make “points”. I actually get to be home until New Year’s Eve when I fly to Miami. My Oklahoma coaching friends leave tonight with their families for the Fiesta Bowl to finish preparing for undefeated Boise State. That means I will spend less time at “happy hour” this week and will be able to do more blogs. I look forward to more of your questions. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. BOOMER SOONER! J.R.

I would liketo find a Henry O. Godwin action figurine. Can you please help.
J.R., Hope you and your family had a great holiday. Can you tell me if any or all of the Hall of Fame presentations are on video. Also do you know if there are any publications that tell what the wrestlers of years gone by are doing today? Thanks
J.R.I want to first say you are the best annoucner of my generation. I am 29 and came up in the later stages of Gordon SOlie, Lance Russell and Bob Caudle. Keep up the great work, you legacy will be a great onw when you finally decide its time to hang them up. My question is, Do you still hold any grudges personal or otherwise that WWE tried to sign Mike Goldberg away from UFC to reportedly host Raw. It was rumored they wanted him to take your place because they needed a younger look. Thank you.
I HOPE YOU HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR J.R., I THINK GORDON SOLIE WAS 1 IN A MILLION, THEY DO NOT MAKE THEM LIKE THAT NO MORE, MUCH LIKE GORILLA MONSOON AND LORD ALFRED HAYES, THEY OOZED PRO WRESTLING, MY ULTIMATE DREAM IS TO SEE STING WRESTLE IN A WWE RING AT LEAST ONE TIME BEFORE HE RETIRES, I THINK STING DESERVES THAT MORE THAN ANYBODY EVER HAS, A MATCH I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN WOULD HAVE BEEN SHAWN MICHEALS AND EDDIE GURRERO, AND BRET HART AGAINST KURT ANGLE, I LOOK FORWARD TO WRESTLEMANIA 23, I KNOW IT IS GOING TO BE SPECTACULAR, I MISS THE MAIN EVENT, THAT USED TO COME ON TBS ALONG WITH THE POWER HOUR, I WILL NEVER FORGET WHEN ARN ANDERSON BEAT THE GREAT MUTA WITH THE DDT FOR THE TV TITLE, HEY ARN ANDERSON SHOULD GET INDUCTED!!!!
Hey, "Hammer". Nobody asked you. Anyone with any respect for Bush is an idiot.
JR First off just wanted to say a HAPPY NEW YEARS 2007, hope you'll be partying it up in Oklahoma this NEW YRS EVE!!!!! Question for you, now that Barry Windham is joining WWE in a producer/coach type capacity, do you see him getting a on camera role in a limited capacity like say Dusty Rhodes or Sgt. Slaughter have gotten recently??? Thanks Mike
I read the piece about a possible brock lesnar return... i personally would love to see a rivalry between lesnar and the animal batista heck who wouldnt.
Hi JR, One of my favourite PPV's of all time has to be In Your House 16: Canadian Stampede, the emotion going into that match was unreal. What was it like to call the big 10 man tag team match in Calgary with the fans going wild? Thanks,
There was a 4th Dudley in the old ECW. His ring name was Big Dick Dudley, not sure of his real name but he passed away a couple of years ago.
I'd like to say that I believe WWE is pushing their hardcore ECW fan base in hte direction of TNA with their horrible booking, and lame story lines. It's sad that WWE is in fact fueling TNAs fire with the murder of ECW. If you don't believe me, listen how the ECW chants that we were hearing changed to TNA. How much spit can a old school ECW fan wipe off their face, before they decide to drop WWE for TNA. I really hope they turn it around.
Hello again Mr. Ross, If I were ever to consider leaving teaching to join the WWE, what qualifications would I need to work under the umbrella of WWE Creative? I could never be a wrestler. I have a great deal of respect for them, and for most of them, their physical attirbutes. I do not know if I could ever cut it as a nackstage interviewer. Where I really want to work is Creative. Like I said in the last (very long comment), I have a lot of ideas up in the still young (27 year old) noggin. Thank you for at least considering my inquiries, Bob L.
Hi JR. I really enjoy your blog and I think you're the greatest color commentator ever...no one ever has or will call a big match like you do. My question is this...you made mention of Jeff Jarrett and how he left the company. I thought Jeff was very professional in how he went out by dropping the IC Title to Chyna. Was there some other friction that would, excluding obvious reasons, make it hard for him to return? Thanks and Happy New Year to All!
Happy New Years to you and yours, First, I hope you had a Merry Christmas. Second, a few questions for you, if you do not mind. I am a huge wrestling fan. Always have been. I was four or five years old when I watched the first Wrestle Mania. I remember when Ron Simmons wrestled with Butch Reed as the team of Doom. I have always dreamed of becoming an employee of the WWE, and who knows, maybe some day I will. Here's where the questions come in: 1. Will the WWE ever add the fan voting that was done for the Cyber Sunday PPV to other Pay-Per-Views. I think that if one match on each PPV is decided on by the fans, that there might be a bigger draw. Such as my idea for the Royal Rumble: Ten wrestlers from each brand. Eight from each are chosen somehow by general managers. The remaining are chosen by the fans. 2. Why do you knock yourself? You are maybe the greatest (maybe second to Gorilla Monsoon) broadcaster of all time. You will some day become a member of the WWE Hall of Fame. 3. What is Eric Bischoff doing with/for the company now-a-days? I understand he still under contract. 4. Do you think the Big Show will ever return to the ring? It has been reported that he is injured or resting nagging injuries. 5. Have you ever thought about politics? Congressman Ross has a nice ring to it. Of course, this would have to be when you retire, a long time from now.... 6. Given the opportunity, would you ever announce with Mike Tenay or Tony Schiavone? 7. Will JBL ever get into the ring again? Watching Smackdown and the Tribute to the Troops, he looks like he may be itching to get back. 8. What do you think of the current tag team divisions on Smackdown and Raw? 9. Do you think that if WWE moved the Cruiserweight Division to ECW, the show might do a little better? 10. Finally, would the WWE ever consider a Submission Championship for ECW? Again, it may be a big draw. Think of it, MasterLock Challenge v. Crippler Crossface.... Sorry, if I have asked so/too much, but like I said, I am an avid fan. I have so many ideas that might work, and I know people in the WWE are always getting ideas from fans. And I know you do not have all of the answers, but you have more of an in than the "wrestling news sites". Plus, these are really more just opinion questions. Thank you and again Happy New Years, Bob L. from Philadelphia, PA
Hey JR, You and the King do GREAT work on RAW! As an OU fan myself, aren't you SICK about what happened to the Sooners when they played Oregon in 2006? Those MORON replay-officials blew it TWICE! Good Grief, what game were they watching anyways??? UGH! It would've been nice to have an Oregon offical DO THE RIGHT THING and Forfeit that game. I think that the "12-1" OU Sooners would've given the 13-0 OS Buckeyes everything they wanted (and then some) in the BCS Title game. I would like to see the Legion of Doom, THE ROAD WARRIORS, inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. They are arguably the BEST tag-team in the history of Pro Wrestling. Happy New Years to You & your Family. Sc
Hey JR I just wanted to know when Monty Brown might make his debut and on wich brand? What do you think about TNA as a product and also on a talent stand piont who would you like to see jump to wwe? Also I miss the good old days of the tag team division when is wwe going to start to establish a more indepth tag team talent pool?Is the rumor of lita bieng pregnant true?can we see bam bam bigelow make a wwe apearance anytime soon! In closing good luck to your sooners this year!
Have Crime Time stick to wrestling and and not do those stupid skits. The one with President Bush was distasteful, appalling and totally cast him in a false light and the WWE, Vince McMahon and Crime Time not only owe President Bush an apology, they should offer one to our armed forces as well since Mr. Bush is their Commander-in-Chief.
Jim, I know the WWE has bascily every piece of classic wrestling footage known to man. When are we gonna see more of the classics on DVD's - Clash of Champions, Royal Rumbles etc? Also I would love to see a DVD on Randy Savage.
Jusrt wanted to say how much I appreciate your work JR. I have listened to you since UWF when I was a kid that roster was the greatest especially Dr. Death I tell my younger friends and kids he was goldberg before there was a goldberg except better. Your potential hall of fame list sounds perfect all great performers. I think Vince should put you back in charge of talent if it was a job you would want to resume. Also put a bug in someones here rebuild the tag team scene hardy's MNM cade and murdoch could be great for the company
To Jonny: the 24/7 rule was one of the worst things that could've happened to that division. It just totally ruined the belt's credibility. I got the idea but I hated it. It would be cool, though, if they brought back the Euro title--snoogans! To Dave up there: the fourth Dudley you may be thinking of is "Big" Dick Dudley, and, no, he was not Abyss. Abyss was never in ECW. Sadly, the real Dick Dudley is no longer with us (if you have either the first One Night Stand PPV or Hardcore Homecoming on DVD you'll see him show up in the tribute montage). For the record, there were more than four Dudleys; hardly any as memorable as the present-day Team 3D, or even Dick.
Hi JR, first time comment here, really enjoy reading you views on different subjects.... I am not that crazy about Cena's wrestling ability, but he continues to improve, so my hats off to him for that.... One thing I think could help him a little in that regard is coming up with a better finishing move, the 'F.U.' appears to be not any worse to take then a common 'body slam' and doesnt look like it would hurt a fly, I would go even as far to say The Rocks 'People's elbow' and The Hulks 'Legdrop' as weak as the moves look, look worse then the 'F.U.' and thats saying something, do you think a more effective finishing move on John's part would help him get over more as a wrestler? The STF he uses is a great set up move, only to be followed by a very weak one.... Any thoughts J.R.?
I just read on one of those wrestling "inside scoop" sites that- -- Vince McMahon is very against the idea of keeping the Hardy Boyz together as a tag team. He has also been made the decision to keep MNM separate. Is Vince really that out of touch with what we (the fans) want/reality/good taste that he would make a decision that backwards? The Hardys and MNM are amazing tag teams! Seperate them but cram "D X" down our throats every week? The current WWE tag team champions? Not so much. Why take a step backwards when tag team wrestling finally starts getting good? Also, the reason we don't like Cena isn't because it's "edgy" not to like him. It's because he's a wigger. And wiggers are a totem to racism. Why? Because the sum and total of their personalities are almost every negative black stereotype a white person has ever come up with. They're rude, pushy, loud, violent, dishonest, wear stupid looking clothes (or in this case carry retarded looking title belts, please, somebody get rid of that thing)... Nobody likes a wigger. That's why we carry "Cena sucks" signs at your shows.
Hey JR, i am wondering what you think is the match of the year for 2oo6 and also do you think Bret Hart will ever wrestle in a WWE ring again??? Thanks
Dear Jim Ross, I appreciate that you take the time out of your busy schedule to post blogs frequently. My name is Nazzar, I live in Southern California and I absolutely want to live out my dream. A dream i've had since I was five years old, a dream people always told me would blow off once I became a teenager. Well, i'm a teenager and I still have that burning desire to become a professional wrestler. You may see this from many people daily, some are serious while others aren't. I'll keep this short and ask you, what does it take to make it? I know it takes dedication..desire..ability and sacrifices. But there must be more to it. Thank you.
Hey Jim. I imagine this is a way off your area of the business, but the WWE site's policy of ignoring such questions means this is the only option: How come all the action figures of wrestlers are aimed at youngsters? Might sound a silly question, but look at some of the McFarlane toys - figures of things like Elvis Presley, the terminator, freddy kruger. they are more like statues to be proudly displayed than multi-jointed toys for kids to play with. imagine how cool a McFarlane-esque line of WWE figures would be - Hogan ripping his shirt, the rock in his Just Bring It pose, Triple H spitting water, HBK doing his lean to one side muscle pose. WWE would make a fortune from the slightly older fans that want collectibles but don't want silly kids toys. See if you can sort it out, eh, Jim :)
Hey there bud, I was just wondering if the WWE's hectic schedule was to blame for the poor quality on current shows? It can't be easy travelling non-stop around the US and even across the globe wrestling each and every night. The WWE product has become stale and very poor. With restrictions being placed on certain superstars limiting what they can and cannot do in the ring. One cannot help but think that the WWE itself is to blame. It seems that WWE tries to keep their superstars in as good a shape as is possible by not letting them wrestle to the best of their actual ability. Paul London for exmaple is capable of some truly awesome stuff. Yet as soon as he entered the WWE he has been stripped of his true ability. Same can be said for CM Punk and many others. It's no wonder that the WWE can no longer hang on to it's talent. How long before we see Lita in TNA for example? Can't be too long surely. We've already lost Christian and Angle due to the WWE's schedule. It's a sad vision of what is inevitably going to happen again and again in the future.
Hey J.R Were is D-lo Brown these days and is there any chance of him returning to the WWE?
I think if WWE made a DVD about Macho Man Randy Savage's career it would be really really cool. Inducting him into the Hall of Fame would be awesome too. Us fans are wondering why a legend such as Savage has not been really mentioned much by WWE for a long time.
Hey JR, are you as mad as I am over Deadwood being cancelled? I remember reading you were a fan. Well the creator decided to move onto writing a new series about surfing. It was probably the best TV show that they had going (better than The Sopranos was this year also) But they might make two made-for-tv films to wrap it up so whatever. If you ever got the time, a really good show worth checking out is the cop drama The Shield.
Hi again... just wondering if you ever watch foreign wrestling? (Japanese, Mexican, etc) If so, what do you think of it, and who are some foreign wrestlers you like?
TNA TNA TNA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey JR. Hope you and your family had a great and rejuvenating Christmas holiday. Shame you couldn't cap it all off with a trip to the Fiesta Bowl to see your beloved OU Sooners. Hell, I don't even watch football on a regular basis (I'm a basketball guy) and I've still become something of a Sooners fan thanks to you. I wish them luck. Anyhow, I've been a huge fan of yours since I first started watching wrestling back in early February of 1997. In fact, I'd say you're one of my favorite play-by-play announcers of all-time. To me there's Chick Hearn (legendary Lakers commentator) and then there's Jim Ross. I've read up on you quite a lot and you seem to have a very storied 30+ year career in the wrestling business. One of my favorite aspects about your announcing style is the level of seemingly pure excitement you emit while announcing. While others in your same position, be it in other sports or what have you, tend to lose steam after long tenures in their business, you've managed to maintain the same intense excitement as you've always had (at least, that's the way it sounds on air). I know you say you're a fan first and foremost, but have you ever had to feign your excitement on the air for any reason? It just amazes me that you've been able to maintain such a consistent level of excitement after having been in the business for such a long time, and I absolutely love that. What would you attribute that to, if its anything you can put into words? Sorry for the long comment but I hope that you can respond. Take care.
Hey JR.. I am a fan from all the way in Singapore and I have to say that you and the King make the best commentary team ever. Although I am looking forward to when you finally write your book, I honestly don't want to even think of you retiring for a long while more. However, I know JBL is supposed to irritate us but I really find him extremely annoying to listen to. I prefer the team of Tazz and Cole to comment for Smackdown but unfortunately Tazz is at ECW. Since we don't get ECW here, I truly miss listening to Tazz. Anyways, its great to see you writing again as i really missed the Ross Reports on wwe.com. Merry christmas and a happy new year JR...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years JR!!! My girlfriend had gotten me two great seated Wrestlemania tickets as a christmas gift and I am so psyched to go! I went to my 1st Mania which was Wrestlemania 22 in my hometown of chicago, my sign got on tv right before HBK dropped an elbow onto Vince from the ladder. I got to meet Benoit and Cena at a couple autograph sessions whom both were very respectable and sincere which was great, and that whole experience was so refreshing that it reminded me of why I was a fan and made me appreciate the performers more of what they do for us in the ring. I thank you and everyone in the WWE who work so hard for us day in a day out.
I think WWE really dropped the ball on what should have been the match of the century. "The Bad Guy" Scott Hall and "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash as the nWo VS Triple H and HBK as DX, with X Pac as the special guest ref., since he was in both the real (WCW's) nWo and DX... perhaps in a Hell in a Cell match. That really should have been a Wrestlemania match, in my opinion. There could have even been a fatal four way tag match, with Ric Flair and Chris Benoit respresenting the Four Horsemen and Orton and Batista representing Evolution, to determine who the greatest faction in wrestling history is. I mean, it's obvious that the nWo was, but you know, just to humor people. So my question is; why, exactly, did you release Scott Hall? Will we ever get the story on this? Hall's release was really the death of WWE's nWo since he was the draw (at least on the microphone) for this faction. Also, I'd like to mention Eric Bischoff telling DX that they were an nWo rip off on Raw was priceless as so many of us feel that way to this day. Guys? He who laughs last... didn't get it. My two cents. PS, Push Snitsky! ;-)
J.R., do you think it's possible that pro-wrestling, including the WWE, has been unfair to foriegn characters and may have even influenced it's audience's perception of forgieners? I mean, a week ago on Raw Vladimir Kozlov was soundly booed for appearently no reason. He did not make any dispariging remarks about our country or the fans. He just "talked funny" and automatically the fans knew to boo him. Personally, I think that it's ok to have an evil foreigner type of heel every once in a while, but it'd be nice to see some balance and have more positive portrayals too.
Hi JR guess who? lol anyway Just wanted to ask you one thing and say I'am really exited to see you guys Jan 7 in Kansas City. I'am a big WWE fan if God willing I'll make in WWE. I go to WWE events when they come to Kansas City. Now For my question. How is Harley Race doing? I respect him tons and hope to go to his school. Thanks Buddy.
Hey JR..I was recently watching the Bret hart DVD and got a small idea of why the montreal screwjob happened..either way wCw did drop the ball on Bret as they actually had him Job to DDP which I find uphalling especially after Bischoff himself said DDP was only good as a transitional champ and Bret is a wwe legend. Also the difference between VKM and the current DX..... HHH and HBK have a massive amount of title reigns and never fell in the public's eyes.. however the same cant be said about the artists formely known as the new age outlaws...
J.R. In a argument that really can never be settled. I figured who better than you to give an opinion. Who do you view as the greatest superstar of all time. I believe Stone Cold is. The numbers say it all. If I'm not mistaken, Austin sold the most ppv's as a headliner and also sold the most merchandise.Flair,Hogan, and The Rock are great, but Austin gets my vote. How bout you. Thanks for all the great mondays over the what seems to be 20 years. Your the best.
While I know you have no say in the hall of fame inductees, man did it ever bring a smile to my face to even read the words "maybe Bob Backlund." I know I don't "know" Mr. Backlund but having met him and being a victim of one of his in stand promos in the old Summit in Houston I have to say he's worthy. His work before "Rock n Wrestling" and "Hulkamania" are memorable to some that appreciate the finer points of the mat game, and we'd love to see him honored. I'm just glad to see that you'd even see it as a possibility. Good luck to you on your restaurant and to your Sooners on the 1st. (That may be the last time anyone from Texas tells you that.)
Hey JR, Thanks for taking my question. I was wondering if you follow TNA?
Mr. Ross, What is the status of Monty Brown? He was signed and acknowledged on WWE.com, but it has been weeks and I have heard nothing about him. The last superstar whose signing was announced on WWE.com was Jeff Hardy, and he debuted in only a few weeks. I am a big Brown fan, and think he can turn into a great signing for the company.
J.R. Did you ever get tired of calling commentary with Vince McMahon when he would ALWAYS count to 3 on every pin fall attempt? "1 . . . 2 . . an he got 'em! Wait, no he didn't." Happy New Year
Does the WWE allow it's superstars to wrestle independent shows like TNA does or are all or most under a no-compete clause in their contracts?
Is it an on pourpose rib when a new name debuts that the WWE puts these guys together in the ring? 2 examples Kenny in the ring with Jack Doane when he debuts as Kenny Dykstra or when Henry O Godwin debuted on tv against the UT two former "Mean" Marks from WCW
JR, I believe that The Rock'N'Roll Express, The Midnight Express, and The Road Warriors will all, undoubtedly, be inducted into the hall of fame. Who would you wager on being inducted first? If your answer is the Road Warriors (and I am a HUGE LOD fan), would it be based on their body of work, or simply because they have ties to the WWE that the other two teams don't? Thanks, Shane Shane
hey j.r i hope you had a merry xmas what are the chances of a roster draft between the big 3 Raw Smackdown and ECW i like the idea of the rosters getting a bit of a mix around what do you think
HEY JR! I was wondering whether a deal with PEPSI could be reached for CM PUNK. Everytime i watch ECW there are heaps of Pepsi logo signs for CM PUNK in the audience. Surely a promotional deal would give pepsi great advertising!
J.R.,I would just like to ask you when do you think Kane will ever be World Champion again. He was already champion once, but that only lasted one day(1 day), what kind of stuff is that.I personally think he desearves better than what he is getting right now.Give him at least a U.S. title mach to be fair.
Call Vince and tell him to put Savage in the HOF! Are the chances good??
Hey J.R. nice read you always do a great Job. Two quick questions: first what would it mean to wrestling fans around the world to see Bret Hart step into a WWE ring one last time. As much as I loved seeing him being inducted into the Hall of Fame he still needs to make an appearance on television. Second question is how do you think Randy Savage will be recieved by the WWE if and when he does return only if it is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. God Bless and Marry Christmas
