Random Thoughts and Opinion...

Posted in:

Busy week with New Year’s Revolution and Monday Night Raw back to back but with the events in Kansas City and St. Louis respectively the travel from here in Norman, Oklahoma was a breeze. Traveling approximately 51 weeks a year is challenging to say the least especially with airport security, the long lines and the number of seemingly first time fliers who can’t understand that when security says “take off your shoes” they really mean “take off your shoes” and that it isn’t negotiable.

Here are some of the “hot topics” about which you have commented on:

HHH- This is a serious blow to Monday Night Raw as The Game will be out 4-6 months after undergoing surgery Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama. The only consolation is that this quadraceps injury isn’t quite as serious as the last quad injury HHH suffered. Don’t get me wrong, this is a serious injury but not a career threatening one as I understand it, especially knowing HHH’s work ethic and how hard he will rehab to get back to ring worthy condition. Nonetheless, when quality depth is in such short supply, losing an athlete like HHH is a challenging blow to the flagship show of the WWE. It will be interesting to see who steps up and makes this horrible situation into an opportunity to run with the ball, so to speak.

Monty Brown- Is not in the witness protection program and will debut when his name is called. I don’t even know what show Brown will be on as I write this. Brown has natural athletic gifts but needs ring time to fulfill his potential. I like his upside but don’t know Monty well enough to accurately comment on his work ethic even though I assume it is strong as Brown has NFL experience.

Kemper Arena Jinx- I don’t know about that one but I can also see where one might come to that conclusion. All things happen for a reason even if we mere mortals can’t figure them out for certain. I must admit it did feel a little strange walking into Kemper Arena Sunday afternoon.

The cliche is “about as useful as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest”. Hey, it’s live TV and sometimes I am not even sure what I say. That comes from getting excited and drinking too much coffee. It is akin to the equally tasteless “one armed paper hanger”.

The One Man Gang- The biggest “Game**** of ‘em all” is indeed alive and well and living in southern Louisiana working as a prison guard. OMG, real name George Gray, was an awesome big man in his day and was a dominate hand for Cowboy Bill Watts back in the day and before he went to the WWE. Some fans abuse Michael Cole too much and let’s remember Cole wasn’t doing this voice over process alone.

The Rock- Contrary to what wikipedia may or may not say, I NEVER said The Rock was coming back to the ring in 2007. Would I love seeing “The Great One” in a big time match in 2007? Of Course. But wrestling is not what the Rock does for a living any longer and making movies is. The Rock will be in the remake of the TV show “Get Smart” which begins filming soon.

Mick Foley- I never had a clue that Mick was going to be launched off the top of the Hell in a Cell OR fall thru the cage violently to the canvas in the much talked about Pittsburgh match with The Undertaker. I was aghast and in shock….probably just like many fans.

WWE Hall of Fame- To the absolute best of my knowledge there has been NO ONE selected thus far for induction into the WWE Hall of Fame for 2007. I expect/assume the list of inductees to be finalized by the end of January or early February. The ceremony is slated for the Fox Theatre in Detroit the night before Wrestlemania 23. Lots of wrestlers and personalities are deserving but I hope the list is kept to 7-8 inductions. Also, and this is a delicate subject, the WWE doesn’t need to induct too many deceased wrestlers, simply in my opinion, as it has the potential to bring the night down somewhat. That’s only my two cents.

Announcing off a monitor-Announcers are taught to work off their monitor as that is the image that is being seen at home. To talk about something the viewer cannot see is not recommended but that is not to say it doesn’t happen from time to time. Many an announcer has been verbally spanked when caught not paying attention to their monitor. When the monitors go out for whatever reason, I usually watch the TitanTron until our monitors are operable.

Masters/Bulldog comparison- Physically there is a similarity even though I would guess that Davyboy was the stronger of the two. Wrestling wise, it is not fair to make this comparison as The Bulldog was a seasoned pro when he arrived in the WWE and Masters was/is not. Will Masters ever be as good as The British Bulldog? That is entirely up to Masters, but filling Davyboy’s boots won’t be easy.

Matt Hardy/Edge- Why has one “broken out” and the other seemingly has not in the opinion of some readers? Interesting question. I can only offer my opinion but one of the big differences in these two aforementioned wrestlers is their verbal skills. Edge has had more opportunity to refine his verbal skills and has done a bang up job with that aspect of his game. Edge may well be the best antagonist on any WWE brand. Matt has distinct skills but his lack of “talking time” has not helped his overall presentation. Both Edge and Matt are excellent in ring talents and are a credit to any roster on which they are a member.

Dean Malenko- I always thought Malenko was underrated as a wrestler. Dean was unfairly earmarked as “too small” which is a real load of horse manure. Malenko’s greatest asset today might be teaching young wrestlers the fundamental skills they need to advance down the long and winding road to wrestling success.

Bob Sapp-Obviously Sapp has the size that many covet in this business. Sapp is also an athletic big man which is a great combination to possess. I don’t know Bob well enough to get a feel for his work ethic or how hungry he is to establish a legacy in wrestling as he has done in Japan in mixed martial arts. If Sapp were available to sign, which he is not, and had his heart set on becoming the best in his field then Bob Sapp could probably make millions of dollars in the world of wrestling.

Why doesn’t the WWE re-sign Brock Lesnar? First of all, I don’t even know if this matter is on the WWE’s radar. Secondly and most importantly, it takes TWO to tango. I don’t know if Brock would even entertain coming back to the WWE as I thought the two parties were close at one time but the deal fell through for reasons I am unaware. Again, if the field was totally level and everyone was on the same page, Lesnar could help the WWE as he is a gifted and talented wrestler. However, if Brock’s heart wasn’t into the commitment and he was only wrestling for the cash, this would be a partnership doomed from the beginning.

Is The Warrior crazy??- Far from it. Is the Warrior an enigma? Probably. Warrior had “it” and still does.

Droz- I last saw Droz was in Atlantic City for Raw and he was in good spirits and, as always, we talked football more than anything else. Droz seems to be as well as expected and had noticeable movement of his arms but was still confined to a wheelchair. Nonetheless, Droz was positive and is a joy to be around.

Raven- I always thought Scott (Raven) Levy had a great wrestling mind and was probably underrated by many decision makers within the business. Some of Raven’s early stuff in Portland was really strong. Scott had talent but at times was his own worst enemy, yet I always got along well with him.

Bobby Heenan- truly a genius. Bobby could make any audience laugh and had a brilliant grasp of the wrestling business. Bobby lived the business for years and years and learned something from virtually everyone he worked for or with. I love Bobby and his wife Cindi and not seeing them on a regular or at least a semi-regular basis is tough. Heenan was challenging to do taped voice overs with because he was so naturally funny it was sometimes impossible to not just laugh uncontrollably out loud. This would necessitate us having to start what we were working on all over. Bobby was arguably the best wrestling manager of all time and could take an ass whipping better than any manager I ever saw. When Bobby moved to the announcing side of the business he mastered that craft too and excelled with Gorilla Monsoon as they were a natural comedy team who jelled big time. Heenan had the skills and talent to make people love him or hate him which is truly a lost art form by the vast majority of individuals who earn a living now days in the business. Heenan is a treasure in this business and could be utilized as such if the right opportunity comes a long. I think Bobby would be a great evaluator of young talent among other things.

Wrestlers copying other wrestlers- Umaga/Samoa Joe, etc….much to do about nothing. Who cares? How far back to we want to travel? If one wanted to nitpick perhaps every Samoan wrestler has copied Peter Miavia in some form or fashion. Ric Flair copied Buddy Rogers, the first “Nature Boy”. HHH has put things in his game very similar to Harley Race, Arn Anderson, and Ric Flair. HBK has implemented Flair elements to his presentation as well. Virtually every top wrestler I have ever known copied some traits from their predecessors which I think is the way to go. Everyone needs role models and young wrestlers today would be well served to ID certain stars of yesteryear and copy some of their maneuvers and in ring strategies. It goes as far back as the Dusek Brothers, the Riot Squad, being the forerunners of the Four Horsemen who were the role models for the nWo, etc. More on this topic soon.

J.R.’s influences- My mentor from the first day I spent in the business was Cowboy Bill Watts. I acquired my foundation for wrestling from Watts who learned from LeRoy McGuirk, Roy Shire, Verne Gagne, Eddie Graham, Jim Barnette, and Fritz Von Erich. So I would have to say many of the things those men taught Cowboy were passed along to me at an early age. I have tried to learn from everyone I have worked with and for, but the foundation was laid for my professional career by Watts back in the 70s. Reality based, athletically oriented wrestling was what I grew up on and what I experienced the first several years of my career. However, there were plenty of great in-ring talents who had main event experience and were gifted in-ring performers back in that era even through the 80s and most of the 90s to facilitate that style. That is not the case today as we have discussed here on many occasions. Wrestling is in need of more great “wrestlers” of which we have far too few in my view.

Stone Cold- As we have said many times, and I thought I had short term memory loss, Steve Austin’s movie “The Condemned” is scheduled for release around April 27. That means that one would assume that Austin would have a “role” at Wrestlemania on April 1. What that “role” will be is unknown to yours truly. I would, however, bet the farm that Austin will be prominently featured somehow at Wrestlemania 23. After all the Austin Beer Bashes over the years I never heard of any one getting pulled over and having to explain the aroma of beer to a police officer. I came home with smelly clothes plenty of times myself but never had any issues with the law. Plus, it would have been easy to explain. Much easier than the wrestler in the 70s who loved to smoke pot and bought pot flavored air freshener from a head shop. When ever he was stopped and the police officer smelled the pot smoke the wrestler would break out into a staged belly laugh and show the officer the pot scented room deodorant. I don’t think this hemp lover was ever arrested for pot smoking which is a miracle.

Post Wrestlemania Raw- I have also heard it will be in Dayton, Ohio and not in Detroit. I can only assume an arena in Detroit was unavailable. Nonetheless, Detroit to Dayton isn’t a bad drive.

New Zealand, Nova Scotia, Australia- I am not in the loop on the scheduling of WWE events. However, I would definitely think that if the WWE goes back to Australia in 2007 which seems to be a cinch that New Zealand will be attached to that tour because of geography and travel compatibility. Nova Scotia might be harder to schedule but I am sure the WWE will do all they can to make it happen if it is remotely possible. You can also contact your local arena where the WWE plays and ask them if they are holding any dates for future WWE events.

Finally, I have never had a commercially produced Bar-B-Q Sandwich that I felt held up to “old school Q”. if there is one out there I would love to try it.

Please tell a friend about our site and my personal thanks for all of you who have and are buying our sauces and merchandise. We will have more blogs this week.

My wife likes to see the bond the show brings to us as father and son. I live in VEGAS and I would like to know when your going to be out here . I also own the stock and if you look on RAGING BULL you will see my posts I post as GO2FASTLINE come visit . Please respond my son and wife woul love to know then the WWE comes to VEGAS. Thank you Barry
Good old JR I just wanna tell you to continue doing what your doing. I believe you have left your imprint as an announcer. Raw wouldn't be the same without you. I'm only 22 but i grew up watching Vince,Monson,Ventora, and Heenen (who were all great). Being that your so fundamentally sound I believe your right on that list along with the greats. Mike Tenay is also good but your ability to make the viewers feel like their apart of history while we're watching it is what separates you from today's announcers. I'm one of the people that feel wrestling not only WWE is going threw a slump. If you think about it back in the late 80's and threw out the 90's even the c list wrestler's made you believe in their character let alone the superstars. Now there are few wrestlers who have in-ring fundamentals and know how to work the mic. I miss those unforgettable Saturday Night Main Events(I guess this is why I you-tube them). I see a couple great stars. Not to many great matches. I read you might not come back after your contracts up. That is a shame for Monday nights. We saw what happen when they tried to replace you before. Who is Vince fooling? I might have wrote to much but your a writer so you can understand.
JR, Due to the lack of HHH at this years Wrestlemania, and the fact that we are obviously going to see The Undertaker win his first Royal Rumble, is there a chance that the RAW main event may be a money in the bank match for the title? Last years Money match was far too brief, not nearly as impressive as it was the prior year. I personally feel that this would calm every fans questions about mania quickly, plus divert attention from HHH's absence. Putting Cena, Umaga, Edge, Orton, Flair, and Michaels in the ring for the title at the same time will leave the audience skeptical about the outcome. I think Flair has put himself through alot this year for WWE, and deserves a spot in a headlining match. Cena will most likely walk into the mania the champ. Edge has spent the whole year proving himself to be a great headlining heal. Orton was not remotely impressive in last years 3-way, at least to me. He is a main event player though, and just works better on the RAW rosters list of big guns. I don't see Umaga and Cena ending at mania. The feud could potentially outlast the Umaga characters usefulness. So, he's a mark to headline, plus he did squash most of the roster, including DX. Then, there is Michaels. This legend will no doubt be waving the DX banner until HHH returns or he gets time off to recoup. If he's going to be carrying DX, he has to headline mania. It only seems fitting for him to anyway, seeing as how it is widely believed that HHH was going to. Then we consider that we've seen just about every kind of main event for mania coming and going. This is definitely something that we haven't before. I realize that this may take away from other match ideas, but it's mania. We've seen these guys, almost all of them, against eachother at some point, but not at the same time. It would definitely be worth my $50 bucks. How do you think that this match would fair, and just for laughs, who do you think would walk away with the belt? Much respect, Trinity
Hey JR, Have either Dave or Earl Hebner, actually fessed up and admitted selling WWE merchandise without proper liscensing? Why are so many exWWE employees so bitter about their time in WWE? Thanks, George
JR, just wanted to write and say that I have enjoyed listening to you since the mid 80's, even supposedly played Bingo with your Grandma in Westville, Oklahoma...Anyways I think the aquisition of The Alpha Male was long over due, since he was at the top of TNA, then virtually dissappeared. I would like to hear what you think of the tag-team status in the WWE, and what is your top 5 tag-teams since the 1980's are. I could ramble on forever asking you questions, but this will work for now. Thanks, Justin
Mr Ross, I am disappointed that you took part in that disgusting, overly violent, shameful, episode of RAW (Jan 15 07), most particularly the way you called the main event, in which the violence reached unethical and immoral levels that have gone over the edge, even by the WWE's lackadaisical standards. It's shocking to think that a man with principles would sacrifice his character and read the script (I'm hoping it was a script) that was handed to him for that match. Not only read it, but put so much emotion into that garbage, adding to the debacle. Let's recount some of the dialogue, exact quotes taken from my videotape of the whole disgusting affair. This is after Michaels kicks both men in the crotch and gets a sledgehammer and hits Edge in the stomach, at which point you clarify, very unemotionally: "That'll break your ribs or cause internal injuries." Sounded like you were really concerned, if I may insert some sarcasm. When Michaels then hits Orton in the head with the sledgehammer (this is after he's kicked both men in the crotch with no objection from you) , you state, sounding like it's the thrill of your life: "What a shot right to the jaw! Michaels hit a sledgehammer shot, right to the jaw! And this huge crowd here in Louisiana, has ...Shawn Michaels and that amazing fighting spirit!" Mr. Ross....."fighting spirit?" Sledgehammers? Breaking ribs? Shots to the jaw?" You have clearly lost your mind along with your character. Then...at the moment when Edge, raising a steel chair over Shawn Michaels' head, which was also resting on a steel chair, you shout: "Oh my God! No! No! Don't do this! Please don't do this!" Suddenly, there's compassion. Huh? It's OK for Michaels to abuse the opponents, but not for Edge or Orton? And this is where your compassion, and your character completely crumbled. Did you do the same when Michaels had a chair raised over Randy Orton's head just moments later in the match? No. In fact, you cheered it. You approved it. You applauded it with your histrionic (to say the least) dialogue. Let's take a look at the quotes: "Michaels is placing Orton's head on that one chair and reaching for the other! And you know what's coming up here! Orton's gonna get his brains scrambled!" Very nice, Mr. Ross. I'm sure the people who frequent your family oriented site are thrilled to hear the family man make such disgusting comments. It's particularly odious when you decry the same type of activities by other people but applaud them when carried out by the "faces" of the WWE. Not only a lack of character, but a shocking absence of fair play. There's more Mr. Ross. (And your colleague, Mr Lawler is no better, but I haven't found a website to let him know.) After Michaels hits the downed Orton with the chair you shout..with obvious glee: "WHAT A SHOT! WHAT A SHOT! Michaels was downtown with a ....chair to....! DX is not dead! DX lives, King! Absolutely amazing! Michaels has prevailed! Michaels has prevailed!" Mr. Ross, this is the kind of thing that is spewed by people who are committed to insane asylums. Do you not realize that you have a social obligation, outside of your WWE allegiances, to maintain the integrity of your character and hold yourself as an example to others? To uphold the ethical and moral principles of basic concern for other people? You abandoned all that when you agreed to read that script last Monday night. The way you "acted" it out, with the kind of glee that savages show made it even worse. Yes, I know, it's your job. It's what Vince and the creative team want in their "script." But that's where your character comes in. And a choice. You have an obligation to refuse to do it on moral and ethical grounds. It's a choice that was put before you. And you made the wrong one. What a terrible example to show young people whose spirits and outlooks are shaped by what their superiors do. Yes, it's what Vince wants. But that puts the decision in your hands. You can sacrifice your principles for your job or you can sacrifice your job (possibly) for your principles. What's more important? You know as well as I do - and you made a choice on Monday night that puts your character in question. It's a big disappointment.
Hey JR...you are the voice of wresting. My question is have you heard anything of the wwe being filmed and presented in HD? Also when will the WWE return to Philly? Maybe Wrestlemania 24! We had one and deserve another.
TOM EDWARDS is a genius, great column you hit the nail on the head I couldnt agree with the problems wwe has these days, its just terrible, but the only way to watch wrestling is wwe or tna so what can a fan do...bend over and like.
Hello J.R. This will be very short. I'm not going to go on about Triple H or anything else. I'm just wondering, with the lack of top performers in the business today, who do you think is most deserving to challenge for the WWE Title, World Heavyweight Title and ECW Heavyweight Title at Wrestlemania? Would you like to see one of the younger guys step up, or see the more seasoned veterans take the spots?
I just wanted to say JR I am a big fan of yours and the king. You two guys have really clicked over the years. I am glade to see the king isnt a heel any more. I have been watching the WWE since strongbow and billy whitewolf were a tag team way back when. I have watches alot of the greats in wrestling pass away.I just wanted to say the WWE has brought me many years of entertainment and i hope it brings many more.I tried to watch TNA but they just BLOW.I was just wondering if anyone can just shut up armstrong and sop.DX was there long before VKM pulling the skits and pranks long before anyone had the idea of putting those two idiots together. Best Wishes to all the WWE staff
I miss REAL TAG TEAMS!!!!!!!! I want to see team tag teams again like THE KILLER BEE'S, THE HART FOUNDATION, ROAD WARRIORS, THE VON ERICKS, THE ISLANDERS, DEMOLITION,THE BRITISH BULLDOGS, I am sick of seeing 2 guys just put together and call them a tag team....the tag belts are nothing more than a joke now
You said Nova Scotia would be tough to do, but WWE hits Nova Scotia all the time - Halifax routinely gets WWE live events.
jr you can not tell me that you and the wwe are not alittle unhappy about the way hulk hogan treats his fans. He acts like he the greatest. I saw a episode of hogans know best last night on vh1. It was the one about the ultimate hulkamaniac. Some poor kid who was basically made fun of by hulk and his spoiled son making the guy look like acomplete idot. HOGAN AND HIS ENTIRE FAMILY should be grateful for any fan hogan had or has his entire career. I thank vince should thank about this befor he bring hulk back for any thing in future plans. The bottmom line is with out the fans they not have a pot to pisse in. thanks jerry
I have to wonder- what's up with the overuse of the word unorthodox in WWE these days? Every week in every episode of SD!, RAW and ECW at some point in time one of the announcers calls someone's style unorthodox (much like a few's is stamped technical; like all wrestlers are now categorizied to being either unorthodox or techinal). Sometimes it seems to be even littered in almost all of the matches in RAW. This isn't much of an issue no and perhaps a bit stupid thing to write about, but it's turned into some sort of an insider "joke" while watching wrestling with my brother and I wouldn't mind not hearing it occasionally. The blog's been an interesting read since the beginning of it though, so thanks for sharing some of your thoughts and all the best to HHH with his recovery as well... albeit I fear when he does return he'll be even more of an unstoppable-no sell squashing machine than he turned into again with the reformation of DX.
hey jr I WAS wondering what your thoughts on the ring announcer Gary Mike Cappeta from WCW back in the late 80's ANd early 90's what was he like to be around. he seems to be forgotten. Your thoughts Always a fan Dustin
Where is the World's Greatest Tag Team? Why the HELL is garbage like Cade/Murdoch and fake Rosies on the show but not the two best wrestlers on Raw?
It's an honor to write to you J.R. It'a about time the WWE gives proper respect to Demolition, one of the greatest tag teams of all time. Would love to see a Demolition DVD, I know I'm definitely not alone on this. Time for Bill Eadie and Vince McMahon to put differences aside and some do business together instead. Love your site. Regards!
jr i have been a die hard wrestling fan since i was 3 years old. i watch both tna and wwe . what is the reason steve bordon was never on the wwe roster . he is and will allways be the greatest champion of all time. in my mind the only man to ever man handle the great hulk hogan!benoit and sting have been my favorites since the 80's . will benoit be getting a world tittle shot? i feel i have been along for the ride with him as i have never missed a paper view with benoit in it! i felt like that was an 18 year odesey for me to my wishing it fir him and him earning it! i wish triple h a speedy recovery but would love to see sting and benoit in the same program. as for announcers you are the greatest ever.i heard that tna might be getting bought by the wwe is there any truth to that. your fan allways from nc
Since HHH will be out of auction for about 6 months I believe the best thing is to start a Four Horsemen reunion. Since the DVD is coming out soon you can have Ric Flair as the leader, Chris Benoit who has wrestled against Orton and Edge a few years ago. Since HHH is out of action Benoit should be on Raw. Arn Anderson, even though he can't wrestle anymore would be great for an Enforcer and you can have Shawn Michaels as well. All 4 guys going up againt Rated RKO and Kenny Dykestra. Who I beleive is the next up and coming wreslter of 2007. WWE is all about making money so since DX will be dead until HHH gets back a 4 Horseman reunion is the next logical set. Who wouldn't want a 4 Horsemen t-shirt.
Hi JR, Happy belated birthday, sorry, I didn't get a chance to send you my well wishes sooner. I have 2 Questions The first one is How's your health? you have certainly been in our prayers over the years. 2nd is The Mankind-Undertaker Hell in the cell match would you say that would be on your list as one of the greatest matches that you have witnessed?
Hello Mr. Ross As always your blog was great to read. WWE.com should bring back The Ross Report but then again God forbid anyone with a realistic view on things speak his mind. Anyway I have a question for you. Do you think we will ever see anyone like Eddie Gilbert in wrestling again? I missed out on all the fun of Mid South since I'm from New York but everything I've seen of his from there and Memphis blows away anything the WWE or TNA are doing. The WWE could make a killing on a Eddie Gilbert DVD just on his stuff with Jerry Lawler alone. Now that I think about it do you think we'll see anyone half as good as Lawler? As it is The King should get a full time spot because I'll watch him over any number of guys. Well as always I enjoy your commentary on RAW. You can make a trainwreck like the one the other night semm good.
HEY JR, I HAVE A VERY GOOD QUESTION FOR YOU.WHY WONT VINCE BRING BACK STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN? AS WE ALL KNOW HE MADE VINCE ALOT OF $$ ON SELLING HIS MDSE APPEARANCE'S AND THE LIVE ATTENDANCE AT ALL HE ARENA'S ALL OVER THE WORLD.THE TV RATINGS SOARED WHEN AUSTIN WAS WREASTING.I EVEN HEARD AUSTIN SOLD MORE MDSE THAN MARK MCQUIRE DID HERE IN ST LOUIS ON HIS HOME RUN'S.SO WHY NOT BRING HIM BACK???
Thank you for your great commentating on Raw. Do you think a more devastating finishing move could help propel Chris Masters into the mainevent scene, something that really gets people off of their seats. I just don't get that feeling with a swinging full nelson. Maybe something like a full nelson followed by a forward slam would make the move more effective. Also, although difficult to do considering his storyline relationship with any power figures right now, do you think a HHH Raw GM gimmick would be good for the show? I think it could be very refreshing and would give him t.v. time while perhaps keeping DX together and making life for Rated RKO hard or breaking up DX and build heel heat for HHH's return vs. HBK?
Hi, JR... Hey, just a real quick thought. When is Wrestlemania coming to Pittsburgh?... Hopefully we get a new, larger arena soon, and would my hometown of the Steel City be a more viable option for the grandaddy of 'em all at that point? Thanks for keeping up the blog JR, I enjoy reading your insights into the business.
hey mr.jim ross i'm from Chile and i think that you are a very important person in wwe, i hope that you never leave wwe i see every episode of raw and you sir, make a great work thanks for the read bye chao
What is your take on who will run the WWE after Vince McMahon retires? Will it be Shane, Steph, Triple H, or someone else?
JR, I think you overestimate the value of Triple H to any of the WWE wrestling programs. While I don't wish ill of anyone, and hope that he makes a speedy recovery, I believe that any member of RAW - any member! - can fill Triple H's shoes. "The Game" the silly name he is given, is overrated, out of shape and not a particularly good at anything except spitting water into the crowd. Being the son-in-law of the big boss is what gives him his edge, not his talent. I will not be happy to see him come back, as his absence will give other talented wrestlers a chance to shine, and Triple H won't hog the spotlight. Meanwhile, you would do well to stop the one-sided commentary. There are many talented people on Raw and Smackdown, and the WWE announcing tries to shove their decided "favorites" down our throats. Not only is it annoying to do that, but the judgmental calls you make, calling the women "Jezebels" and certain men "pathetic human being" has no place on the show. Just comment when someone does good or bad, no matter who the person is. I liked the old day. Your announcing and the WWE of today are a sorry attempt at providing great wrestling.
Hi JR. I wrote a response above about the Donald/Rosie match. I actually had a little bit of time to think about it at work. It was something truly horrible, but you have expressed many times in your column that you have nothing to do with creative. I'm reasonably sure you were thinking the same thing as the rest of us but you couldn't say it on air. I apologize for my comment asking you why you had not tendered your resignation. With that said, I have watched the WWE for around two decades, since I was 6. My friend holds PPV events at his house. I will continue to go to those parties, and I will continue to watch wrestling, but I will no longer watch WWE television. There is absolutely no respect for the fans, especially the dreaded internet fans. This is not easy for me. I had my 10th birthday party at a WWF show at the Nassau Colesium for a WWF event. The signed Hulk Hogan autograph scared off many a girl from my bedroom. I've seen every Wrestlemania, made a lot of friends through being a WWE fan, but now I've got to completely cut it out of my life. This is not your fault JR, you've been great, but all three shows are, bluntly, bad. You have my e-mail. Please let me know when there is a product worth watching again. Thank you.
hey j.r, i would like to know whatever happened to announcer sean mooney, he just disapeared out of the blue and i thought he was a very good announcer.
Thinking about where WWE might decide to go after Mania today, and it seems like 2 of the brightest stars in the company are running out of feuds. I am talking about Smackdowns Kennedy and Raw's Edge, as Kennedy has seemingly feuded with and beaten all Smackdowns top faces (Undertaker/Kane, Batista) and the same can be said for Edge (D-X, Cena, Flair.) Of course in each case they could potentially adopt one final big feud each on their respective rosters (Benoit for Kennedy and Jeff Hardy for Edge) but past this it seems as if feuds might start to repeat themselves. What do you think of the possibility of a trade between the rosters, allowing Edge to have some big feuds against guys like Undertaker, Batista and Rey Mysterio, maybe getting a run as World champion, and Kennedy getting some high profile feuds with the likes of Cena, Michaels, Flair and HHH when he eventually returns?
I was just wondering, you know of anyone from the UFC that might wnt to sign with WWE..? Tito Ortiz perhaps???
Hey J.R I don't see why everybody keeps putting down the great khali. RAW needs a big man on there. He is a great mani eventer. I know his wrestling skills isnt that good. But I just like to see how John Cena or anyone to that matter could manage to get the big man down. I think the Great Khali givin the chance could be like Andre the Giant or a bigger, younger, and healthier Big Show. Thanks for listining to my reply.
Cruiserweight division should get a bigger push and two names come to mind to help do this but I dont know if signing them would be possible due to there contracts with Wrestling Society X, the two guys I'm referring to are Teddy Hart and Jack Evans, any chance of seeing them in a WWE ring? ps. when will the WWE promote Shantelle Taylor to main roster? the girl is the new Trish!!. pps.. great to hear that TJ Wilson and Nattie Neidhart have been given deals with the WWE and what with Harry Smith already there, Teddy will maybe follow soon??
j.r. i found the rosie and donald match somewhat entertaining but on the other hand i was really kinda dissapointed with it because it wasnt as entertaing as it couldve been and im sure you probally agree with me on this i really wish hh the best of luck on his recovery because hes one of my favorite wrestlers and it was saddening to here that hes gonna have to go through a recovery like that again i wish him all the luck who do you see as coming into replace him temporarily n dx while he is out or do you see dx just phasing out thnx again i really enjoy hearing your thoughts on whats going on in the wrestling world
I've heard you say a million times that before RVD became WWE Champ that he was the best wrestler to never hold the title. Since that happened who do you think now is the best wrestler to not hold the WWE Championship. I think it'r Mr. Perfect. Who do you think? An don't you think its about time Curt Henning was inducted to the Hall of Fame?
Hey JR love the blogs, and i have been a WWE/WWF fan my entire life, but what the hell is vince/creative team thinking half the time. I know this has been brought up alot but that Donald/Rosie segement was the biggest waste of time, and i dont think there has ever been a worse segement in the history of wrestling. Why are they having Khali headlining RAW? the guy cant even talk, he moves slower then viscera and he has ring skills equivalent to my baby sister. Is this WWE's way of trying to make Cena look good? because he could make me look good and i have never wrestled a day in my life. I never thought I would say this, but for the last 2 months RAW has been terrible, and the ratings show it, all i can say is TNA TNA TNA
Will we be able to see you at any autograph sessions during the Wrestlemania Fan Axxess tours? I would love to obtain an autograph from you in person...
Hey JR, I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now. I like the candid insight you bring. I really hope you continue to give us the same for a long time to come. Anyway... What did you think of the WCW Power Plant? Did you think it provided an adequate means to prepare wrestlers for WCW? How was it the same as say, DSW or OVW? How was it different? What could WWE's developmental programs learn from the Power Plant?
Many thanks for the personally autographed BBQ and cook book. In addition to more "traditional" used for the BBQ, it makes for an AWESOME cheeseburger! Love it! Jim
WWE is boring nowadays and Vince has lost his mind with the retards he calls creative. TNA is rising and I hope they make it, so Vince can get his head out of his ass. When are you going to get embarrassed on TV again (or fired)? Poor guy, Vince owns you basically.
Hey J.R., I just watched the Brian Pillman DVD. Once again, I really enjoyed your contribution to that. You are a voice and a road of experience that I respect (as do many of the fans, I would think), and it makes a DVD more credible when you are lending first-hand stories. If Pillman were still alive today, if he was with the WWE, where do you think he would play the most appropriate roll? Would he be behind an announcer's table of one of the shows, would he be the "loose-cannon", still raising hell, would he be behind the scenes, guiding future stars to a brighter antagonists' role (is that an oxymoron?), or would he even still be in the ring? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks! Martial Haprov
Ya know ive been reading this blog off and on for four months now and the one thing that stands out is the fact that J.R. always ignores the elephant in the room. Half of your emails are asking your thoughts on the rosie\trump disaster and once again you say you only want to talk about positive things..but when TNA screws up you don't hesitate to criticize them. You complain cuz you have to work a raw(a job people would kill for) the night of your precious football game. I had to work when U of L won the orange bowl but because I dont think Im royalty I didnt complain. " Were not concerned about what those boys down in TNA are doing" but obviously the rest of the wrestling is. If you sit down and listen to the quotes you say on the smackdown vs. raw game you contradict half of the things you post on this website. Do yourself a favor J.R. if you cant handle answering half of your fans questions then just rename this wwe.com and we will finaly get the clue. TNA IS THE FUTURE OF PRO WRESTLING! - An ignored wrestling fan who has shelled out countless dollars to you only to be treated like crap for to long.
Love to read your weekly blogs. Sampled some of your sauce from a friend of mine!! Incredible, asking for a package from my family for my birthday!! Always been a fan of the sport and of yours since the Mid South days!! Since you get so much mail from viewers i'll keep mine very short. Loved the New Year's Revolution ppv. I got the package deal for the Road to Wrestlemania. My family is really looking forward to watching them. Do you have a gut inkling as to who you'd see going into Wrestlemania as champion and challenger? I really look forward to see who rises up and grabs the brass ring for the opportunity now that HHH is unfortunately out. As far as the Hall of Fame, I'm anxious to see the inductees, I hope you have some input as far as a choice. Personally, I'd love to see Cowboy Bill Watts, he's definitely been a huge influence on the sport and it's evolution and the Mid South is the reason i'm the fan of the sport I am. There's a lot that will be in someday, but I would love to see someone maybe get in now then they get in posthumously. Congrats again on another year, love all three products and can't wait for the year ahead!! Fan forever, Kurt
Hey J.R I have a question. How do I get in the wrestling business? I'm sure you get these all the time and I'm sorry I've just loved this business ever since I was three. I dont have much money so the local promotions wont train me. My parents told me they dont support my decision so they wont help. I know I can do this if I'm given the chance I believe god wanted me to do this. I've signed up at the gym for a month to start getting more muscular. Do you know anyone who could train me for practically nothing? Hope to here from you soon Joe
Will we ever see Debra on WWE TV again? I hope so.
why to you ignore all the questions on the rosie / donald crap from raw? it is by far the biggest topic on your site at the moment. I'm from the uk and i dont know nor care less about the feud, and what was on raw was the biggest stinking pile of crap ive ever seen on there. raw is turning into a joke.
J.R. Excellent update as always. I have a few random questions. 1. Have you seen Lipstick and Dynamite? It's an excellent film that covers the early and ongoing struggles of women in the business. Talk about paying dues... 2.Are you considering a second location for another restaurant? If so, one word Vegas... 3. Is it at all possible that we could see New Jack involved w/ Cryme Tyme in any way, feud, managed by or otherwise? Wishful thinking maybe but with the lack of heel tag teams I could see him as an asset. Keep up the good work, RC
JR, I'm 19 years old and was born into a wrestling-loving family, going all the way back to my great grandfather. As far as ringside commentators, Bobby "the Brain" was always a favorite of mine, but I can honestly say that the combination of you and "the King" is the most enjoyable. The mix of Lawler's hilarious comments/jokes/one-liners, and the technical and informative information you bring to the table, along with your story-telling skill is always something to look forward to every Monday night. Wrestling has always been something that I can enjoy with my family, as I watch every PPV, Raw, and Smackdown with my father and brothers. For the past 19 years, I've seen hundreds of different wrestlers, but for as long as I can remember, going back to the Rockers days, Shawn Michaels has ALWAYS been my favorite. To this day, I will argue to anyone that he is the best overall superstar in my lifetime, hands down. Actual wrestling-wise, I think Chris Benoit is the best. If you could narrow it down within the last 20 years, who do you think is the best overall superstar, and the best wrestler?
First off, JR....love your work,,, Second...I KNOW this letter is about stuff you cant control, but i KNOW you can pass it along at least... I tried WWE's website but there is a 4000 character limit on comments...so here goes...Do you even agree with it at all JR? Dear Mr. McMahon/Creative, Respectfully, First off, let me start out by telling you that I have the nothing but the utmost respect for you. It's obvious you are the king and ruler of the pro wrestling business and the greatest promoter in the history of wrestling. Those are all facts. However, as of late, your booking for your company is flat our horrible. I've been promoting wrestling events since I was sixteen years old, the last fourteen years. I've been a die hard fan since the early age of five. However, someone has to be honest with you and tell you that what you are currently producing isn't good TV. It's apparent your creative team, who is coming up with these storylines, aren't telling you the truth. Do they actually believe what they are writing is good TV? Better yet, do you believe it is? I don't even know where to start. Let's start with last night's ECW show featuring C.M. Punk vs. Hardcore Holly. If anyone can see talent in someone, it should be you, Mr. McMahon. You currently have a wrestler on your ECW show that your audience is really into and want to get behind. That wrestler is C.M. Punk. Despite the fact that you haven't done much with him since debuting him on national TV, he is SUPER over with your audience. This guy could be your next big breakout star. Either you don't see what your audience sees in this guy, or you just don't care what they think and you're going to present them with whatever you want to present them with. Llast night you had him( Punk) lose clean to Hardcore Holly, with Holly's finishing move. That is mind-boggling. Why in the world would you do that? I have nothing against Holly, he's a very good worker. But I have a question for you. In the fourteen years he's been in your company, how many tickets or t-shirts did he sell? You have someone that is fresh and different and is ready to be your next breakout star and you have him lose clean to Holly's finisher? How is that good for business, Mr. McMahon? Seriously. "Donald Trump vs. Rosie." I can see the reason you would want to do this idea. It's a hot story going on right now in America and it might result in the news media picking up the story and giving your company additional press that you hadn't had previously. However, you should have just limited this to a few backstage vignettes between the two, not a match in the middle of your ring that made a mockery of the wrestling business. If "Donald" and "Rosie" can bump around the ring and put on a "wrestling" match, what does that say about your performers that actually go out there night after night and risk their lives for the fans? It makes the entire business look like a joke and make believe. The night before this, you had one of your biggest stars, Triple H, suffer a torn quadricep in a match, and then you put these two in the middle of your ring on national TV to put on a "wrestling" match? You could have just had them stay backstage and did your comedy vignettes with them and got across the same message to your audience. Whatever that message might have been. If you did this "angle" to draw a big TV rating, it didn't work. The ratings went down from a 3.9 to 3.7. That should tell you something right there. Carlito. Here is another guy who the fans are behind and want moved up the food chain in WWE, but is another that is simply just "there" and doing nothing. Don't you listen to your audience? They love this guy. So what have you done with him lately? Nothing! You have him paired up with Torrie Wilson, who's gone through more guys in her WWE stint than I have underwear. At last year's New Years Revolution you had him in the main event of your PPV in the Elimination Chambers match. At this year's NYR, you had him in a popcorn match with Chris Masters, who was also in that same main event the previous year. Early last year some of Carlito's promos reminded me of The Rock. It's apparent Carlito has the "it" factor. Your audience is into this guy big time, but despite that, he has been booked in repeated meaningless matches for the better part of the last six months. Let's move onto K-Fed. I have no problems with you having him involved with your show. He's a hot name in the entertainment industry as being Brittany Spear's husband. He's on the cover of all of the gossip magazines that millions of people read every week. But how in the hell do you have him pin the top star in your company? I don't care that it's because Umaga interfered or that he got his heat back on K-Fed later in the program. There is NO WAY, no matter how you book it, that K-Fed should be pinning your World Heavyweight Champion and top drawing card. It's horrible for business. Would you have ever let some skinny B-List celebrity pin Hulk Hogan back in the '80s? Hell no! Do you think your audience wants to see this non wrestling "punk" go over on your top guy? I don't care if Cena would have shot him in the head with a gun later in the program to get his heat back. The bottom line is that K-Fed pinned your top guy. How is that good for business? How did that sell tickets? Lets move onto ECW. I will not even get started with how badly booked this show is. However, I want to comment on how almost every week on this show you present a main event that results in a non-finish. This show has become so predictable as of late. Fans know going into the show that your main event is going to somehow have a screw job finish. Let's take last week's match between RVD and Lashley. They were having a good back and forth match before RVD leaped from the ring onto Lashley by the announcers table and the match resulted in a double knock out. Huh? I thought this was EXTREME Championship Wrestling? Since when can't RVD, who does and did way more crazier things than that on your shows through out the years, not get up from a leap to the floor? His leap last night where he missed Lashley and leg dropped the announcers table was more serious than what resulted in a non finish the previous week. It's going to come to a point where fans are tired of tuning into this show because they know they are going to get screwed out of a finish in the end. If the fans know they are going to get screwed out of a finish every week, why in the world do you think they will tune into watch? You're going to continue to draw the same audience you have been for the last few years. If you're happy with your 3.6-4.0 average you have with Raw currently, don't change a thing. Your die hard audience will watch your product regardless of what you present them, much like I do. I think your product as of late has been horrible, but I watch it because I love this business and I'd watch it regardless If you want another "boom" period with your business again, which I'm sure you do, it's not going to take place with what you're presenting right now. I don't care how many K-Feds, Donalds, or Rosies you have on your show. It all comes down to creative. If your creative team is not being creative, which they aren't, get rid of some of them and make room for people that are creative to be on your team. You can have all the college degrees in the world. You can have all the BA/BS in film, TV, drama, media studies, communications or equivalent in the world. You can have all of the writing and production experience in network television in the world. You can have all of the professional TV staff experience in drama and comedy in the world. All of that and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee. What you need is someone that understands the wrestling business and knows what your audience likes and wants. You need someone that eats, breaths, and sleeps wrestling 24/7, not some Hollywood writer that doesn't know the difference between a wrist watch and a wrist lock. Like I said, if you're happy with your average rating of 3.6-4.0, don't change a thing. But if you want to get your ratings back to the days of the "Attitude" era, which I'm sure you do, it's time for change. Change starts with creative.
