J.R.'s Family Bar-B-Q

Bar-B-Q... Hulk... Brand Separation... NHL... Chris Adams... More

J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q Restaurant update: We hope to have our place open sometime in the month of April at I 35 and Main Street in Norman, Oklahoma where a Krispy Kreme was formerly located. We are working diligently on getting the menu and recipes as we feel they should be in addition to gutting the building and getting it ready to seat approximately 150 people. We have a great location and our sauces have been selling well off our site plus we have the smoking aspect of preparing the meats down to a science. The smoked turkeys, hams, pork roast, and prime rib we have available on the site are all main event level items that are cooked “low and slow” and are great for any family gathering or special occasion. We are hoping to work with grocery stores in the future but at this time the sauces and other products are only available on our site and at Louie’s Westside in Norman. I really appreciate all that have tried our products and we also appreciate your feedback. I will keep everyone posted on the progress of our place and hope that many of you get to visit it in person if you are ever in our area and that you continue to shop with us here on line for our premium sauces and exclusive merchandise. The WWE Brand Extension- I have heard nothing of the brand extension going away. I feel in the long haul, especially when more talent depth can be developed, that the brand extension is definitely the way to go. Until then, I will remain patient that the talent roster will continue to grow and that wrestlers will realize the opportunity that they have and step up when they are called upon. The brand extension offers more wrestlers job opportunities and extends many of their careers by being able to change brands and wrestle different opponents. This may not be the popular opinion among some of you but I can only be honest and express how I personally feel about this matter. Regarding the WWE becoming the WWF again- it is highly unlikely that it will ever happen. The World Wildlife Fund convinced a UK judge to rule in their favor on the lawsuit of a few years ago which resulted in the name change. Unless something I am totally unaware of happens in court the WWE will remain the WWE. How a judge could confuse a panda with wrestlers will always be a great mystery to me. Fan Access at Wrestlemania- I don’t know what all the WWE has planned to allow the Superstars to interact with the fans, but one would assume that there would be plenty of opportunities throughout the week in the Detroit area. I have not seen my personal schedule for that period of time, but hopefully I will be included in the activities. As it relates to HHH, I have no idea what his role at Wrestlemania will be, if any, but I do know it will not be in the ring due to his quadriceps surgery. Hulk Hogan- We get lots of feedback regarding the Hulkster. Why do many of Hulk’s peers not like him? I don’t know how accurate that question is but my take on it would be jealousy from a fair amount of old timers. Many old timers felt they were better in ring wrestlers than Hulk and perhaps some of they were but they did not come close to generating the revenue that Hogan did. I have known many excellent wrestlers who, for what ever reason, could not sell tickets and that is the name of the game in pro wrestling, generating revenue. No one likes a great, pure wrestling match better than me, but selling tickets is still the bottom line. Period. I also know of no issues between Hogan and Paul Orndorff at the Hall of Fame Ceremony of a few years ago and I was there. If there were ruffled feathers, everyone kept it under wraps in the spirit of the evening. Who is the best wrestler we have been asked, Hogan, Flair or Thesz? All three are unique. Hogan drew more money. Flair has charisma and in-ring skills while Thesz had great in-ring skills and a unique presence during his over 5 decade career. All three men are really special in their own way, Hogan, the showman/performer; Flair, the wrestler/showman; and Lou Thesz, the wrestler’s wrestler. Honestly, all three of these men have made great contributions to the business in their own unique ways. It comes down to a matter of personal preference and style. How old is too old to be a wrestler? I can’t provide an exact number, but when a wrestler ceases selling tickets or connecting with his audience it is time to think about hanging it up. It actually may be more of a mental thing than a physical thing. I have seen veterans who were physically limited and still could sell out arenas and have their fans in the palm of their hand. DVD Releases- I do not have a schedule of when DVDs will be released. I do know that I usually can’t wait to watch them when I receive my copy. The WWE does an excellent job in this area. It goes hand in glove with the content on WWE 24/7 which as you know I throughly enjoy watching. The Wrestlemania 23 card- I have been asked my opinion of what I would like to see at ‘Mania on many occasions. I have not answered that question and I don’t plan on answering it. I have my old school opinions and some of my ideas might be good and then again they might suck pond water. The general idea is to produce the best event for the fans and as we can all see there are dozens of different opinions from fans as to what is good and what is not. The general idea is to book the freshest issues available while having the best in-ring product possible. Could I book a Wrestlemania card? Of course, and so could you. Whether or not the masses would like what we put on paper is an entire other issue. Don’t put too much credence in what you may read about what is being planned for Wrestlemania as that info is just hearsay for now. Certainly, after this Sunday’s Royal Rumble we will all have a clearer picture of at least what one of the main events will be. Yes Dr. Death will go into the Waterloo, Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame this summer. I would love to attend if schedules permit. Doc is a walking miracle from God being cancer free for over two years now. Doc was a 4-time wrestling All-American at Oklahoma and was a main event pro primarily in Japan where he had some dominating years. Speaking of Oklahoma, Joel Watts, the brilliant young producer of Mid-South Wrestling in the 80s is in the Tulsa area the last I heard working in TV production. Joel did some amazing work, especially on music videos back in the day with the Rock ‘n Roll Express, The Midnight Express, The Freebirds, Magnum T.A., and Terry Taylor to name a few. Joel and I also did some broadcasting together as some long time fans will recall. As I understand it, Joel, his siblings and his Mom own the Mid-South library which the WWE has had an interest in acquiring for years. Hopefully one day they will. Jason, I have talked MANY times here about how one applies for work for the WWE. For a broadcasting job one must have a degree in the field, experience of two years or so and a comp reel that is sent to the WWE Human Resources Department in Stamford, CT. As far as Cincy goes, I always enjoy Cincy especially when I get to enjoy the “Q” at the Montgomery Inn! Plus, I think of my dear friend Brian Pillman every time I arrive in town. I am not familiar with Wrestling Society X enough to comment on it. Perhaps when I can watch a few shows on TV I can better provide feedback. Sorry. The Spinning WWE Title Belt-Believe it or not I have no issues with it now that I have gotten used to it. At first, I did not like it. Now I feel it is OK and so must many younger fans who are buying the heck out of them. I think it fits the Cena persona well, but we easily could see a more traditional title belt if Cena loses the WWE Title. I feel there are bigger issues within the business to address than the look of a title belt. Just my two cents. Sherri Martel- One of the absolute all time greats who was fearless, physical, and charismatic as hell. Sherri was a natural and had the opportunity to work several territories before she made a big splash in the WWE. I have great respect for Sherri Martel and her contributions to wrestling. Sherri’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame was a special moment. Chris Adams- greatest claim to fame for many fans today was that he trained Steve Austin. Adams was a talented in-ring performer who was also good on the mic. Adams’ out of the ring exploits haunted him until he was shot and killed. I respected Chris’ in-ring work, especially in World Class Wrestling in Dallas, but not how Chris treated women. Driving back down I-20 from Shreveport to Dallas a couple of weeks ago I remember catching a ride with “Gentleman” Chris Adams back to Big D in the mid 80s from Shreveport TV. I vividly recall that Chris drove extremely fast and it was a really good thing we did not get stopped by the Texas State Police. I would just be getting out of jail about now. Only kidding. I liked Adams’ in-ring work but I wasn’t too high on how he lived his personal life which was actually none of my business. “Booger Red”- I called the Undertaker that when his hair was its more natural red color in honor of former University of Texas All American linebacker and the first draft choice of the Atlanta Falcons Tommy Nobis who was a bad as they come. I got to know Tommy while broadcasting Falcon football and he was a class act and one would never know he had a killer’s instinct in the field of competition. Much like ‘Taker who is a UT fan, I was instructed by the home office to stop using that particular moniker but some folks still remember it. I guess it wasn’t one of my better ideas. Speaking of ideas- no I did not suggest for Kane to become Jerry Lawler’s dentist. Duh. Paul Roma and Chris Masters are not related to the best of my knowledge. Perhaps Nancy Grace could do a DNA test. Who in the hell ever said that there was definitely going to be a “new” Hart Foundation?? Is that simply more internet gossip and rumor? Perhaps it could work, but I personally feel it would be challenging to ever surpass the originals. The Hart kids will always have their family legacy behind them, but why put them in a position where failure is more likely to occur than success? And no, I have NO IDEA when any of the Hart offspring will debut. I am just as anxious as any one else to see them nonetheless. The Wild Samoans- A SUPER team who generated legitimate fear in the hearts of the fans and I am sure many opponents. Afa and Sika were portrayed as savages, but they were as smart as they came when it came to in-ring strategy. The Wild Samoans were the perfect wrestling bad guys. I loved this team and only wish there were more like them today. They came to Tulsa one Sunday afternoon for the Sunday night TV taping in their traditional attire which was quite unusual for Tulsa, Oklahoma in the early 80s. I was at the airport picking up some of the boys when a large taxi driver made a racial slur and a knock on the business directed at Afa and Sika. The two Samoans took off after the loud mouth who abandoned his vehicle and was sprinting down the street in front of Tulsa International Airport being chased by two 300 pounders with wild hair wearing lava-lavas. During the fracus/chase, two “funny cigarettes” fell to the ground. Not knowing where they came from but wanting to protect the business, Bob Roop scooped up the mysterious contraband and ate them. Afa and Sika never caught the runaway taxi driver and Tulsa’s finest never knew of the smoking materials but Bob Roop was in a laid back mood for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Afa and Sika are definitely Hall of Fame material and will always be a team that I respect and admire. If more young tag teams would study the Wild Samoans, they might become main eventers some day instead of not making the big time and then blaming others for their failure. I have not watched “The Wire” on HBO but will check it out. However, I am a Sopranos and Deadwood freak. The NHL needs to create more stars with North American appeal. I, as many Americans, don’t fully understand the rules of the game of hockey either. I love the contact and the players’ athleticism but I need a crash course on the nuances of the game, which many of the Canadians I have worked with including Chris Jericho and Edge have attempted to do. European stars with names most folks can’t accurately pronounce make it challenging for many Americans to make an emotional investment in the game. So Chad Dick said he was treated unfairly. That is news to me. What Chad needs to do is put the past behind him and work to become the star that he achieves to be. Many of us have been knocked down, fairly or not, but it is the getting up part that one must master. As The King says, “One can’t grieve forever.” I am not familiar with Chance Prophet or Chris Severn’s work. I also don’t hire talent any longer so I would not know if they are being considered for work in the WWE or not. I do hear the WWE is hiring, however. Will Colt Cabana be hired? See above. I can’t recall, without digging out my reference materials which are still in boxes, but I think the last group of talent I personally had a hand in hiring was Benjamin, Lesnar, Orton, Cena and others around that time. Sorry I can’t be more exact at the moment. HBK-Edge rocked the house on Monday night! I loved their main event match. It was the highlight match of a highly rated Monday Night Raw broadcast. Skittles?? I read the commercials from a card. Perhaps I get a little too over the top but I am just having fun. Plus, I enjoy a fruity Skittles from time to time. Speaking of my food intake, what did you mean Bilal about how cool it is for me to be making money off my unhealthy image? It isn’t like I eat baby back ribs daily. Plus, our sauces are low in fat and are much healthier than you might imagine. When you buy your next (first?) bottle you can check the label and see for yourself. Were you trying to rile me up or just hurt my feelings? Considering where I once was health wise I am very thankful to be at the level of health I am currently in, thank you very much. Andy Jones- please explain your comment and I will attempt to answer it. Thank you. As it relates to the Undertaker and Wrestlemania, The Deadman will be a vital part of the event, as he should be, and whomever wrestles ‘Taker will most likely get more jeers than cheers. Will the Undertaker lose at Wrestlemania 23? It could happen, but my money says ain’t no way. I sure hope I just did not jinx the big fella. Wouldn’t it be something if Matt Hardy won the Royal Rumble and then won the World’s Title at Wrestlemania and I (no jokes please) ended up looking more ridiculous then when I had my surgery on Raw by Dr. Heiney? Nurse Slobber-knockers wasn’t bad though, one must admit. Even medicated I can remember her. Yes, I did enjoy doing commentary with Paul Heyman. Paul challenged me in an antagonistic way seemingly every moment of every broadcast. Paul’s TV persona is easy to dislike and I found myself no different than many fans and wanted to kill him at times. Figuratively speaking that is. Listen to some of the old WCW shows we did together and you could almost see me becoming “Yosemite Sam” and my face getting redder and redder by the moment. That was some good stuff thanks to Happy Heyman’s ability to push the right buttons on yours truly. Plus I drank too much coffee in those days. Wilbur Snyder- Wilbur was a former NFL football player in the 50s who was trained for pro wrestling by Lou Thesz, Verne Gagne, and Warren Bockwinkel (Nick Bockwinkel’s father). Wilbur was business partners with Dick The Bruiser for a time and wrestled all over the world including Los Angeles, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Montreal, Japan (for Giant Baba), Australia, and in Detroit. It has been told to me that Wilbur Snyder invented the Abdominal Stretch. Snyder had great success as a single performer but even greater success as a tag team wrestler. I hope this info helps. I have often wondered how can we move forward in our business if we don’t know where we came from? Every new athlete who comes into wrestling should be required to watch old tapes and to take written tests on the history of the business. What was old is now new again to this generation and what worked then will damn sure work now to a large degree as far as in-ring psychology and basic wrestling is concerned. It is like blocking and tackling in football. The most fundamentally sound team usually wins. Finally, I have not seen Steve Austin’s “The Condemned” but everyone who has seen it has had positive things to say about the film. I am anxious to see it and I know Steve is really happy with the way it turned out and he is not easily pleased with creative. I expect “The Condemned” to launch Steve Austin’s movie career in a huge way. And yes, he is my friend and yes I am biased so take me to the woodshed and beat my backside if you feel compelled. Bottom line (get it?) is that the focus groups and movie people love the film. Thanks for checking out our site and for telling a friend about us. You can sign up for free to receive updates when we post new blogs by checking out the home page. If you write negative things personally about me please preface it with telling me you bought something first. That was a joke but we do appreciate those of you that have bought sauces, caps, shirts, etc. J.R.

Hey JR, do you have a status quo on Edge's return? Smackdown has been a little bland with out the Rated R Superstar.
Thank you for some of the complimentary words regarding my favorite wrestler, "Gentleman" Chris Adams. While I know this does not contradict what you wrote about him in "The Stone Cold Truth," I'm happy you objectively referred to some of his positives. His work in World Class Championship Wrestling, especially as a heel, was innovative and very much underrated. One question: I browsed through Sean Michaels' autobiography- does he give Chris Adams any credit for popularizing "Sweet Chin Music"? Michaels was there during Adams' heyday.
Jim Ross, I really appreciate what you have accomplished. I remember the first match I ever watched. My family and I had just moved to OKC, OK back in late 1980. Some months later I was flipping channels and came across a show called Mid South Wrestling. The match I saw was the supposed scientific "friendly" match between Ted Dibiase and JYD. I was half way watching when out of nowhere this guy named Dibiase took a foreign object from his trunks and inserted it into his glove and teed off on JYD. I immediately became a big fan and couldn't wait until the next show and the next. I think it was probably a year or so before you came on the scene in Mid South. You are easily the best play by play announcer in the wrestling world. I remember you used to be able to use all of the scientific terminology, I miss the more wrestling based names of holds and moves in the ring that you and Bill Watts would so colorfully explain during your telecasts. I frequented the Myriad in OKC, I always enjoyed seeing not only the wrestlers but the guys like yourself, working behind the scenes during the matches. I was happy to hear that Dr. Death is ok, I didn't know he had a bout with cancer. I remember a match in OKC, where he was facing Wild Bill Irwin. The Great Kabuki ran in to interfere, and on his way to the ring I caught Dr. Death's attention to warn him about the impending danger. He whirled to catch Kabuki coming through the ropes and worked him over. As an 11 year old I was fired up for two weeks telling anyone that would listen how I had saved Dr. Death Steve Williams. I really appreciate you reading this, I know I am a rambler. I just really loved those days of wrestling, in my opinion everything pales in comparison to Mid South. Even the close "cousin" franchises like World Class were not quite as good as Mid South. One other occasion that ocurred after a match at the Myriad was where my friends and I were really giving it to Ted Dibiase outside his dressing room area. Dibiase disappeared suddenly and out of nowhere appeared Matt Borne and Hacksaw Duggan at opposite ends of the dressing room exits. They proceded to chase us out of the Myriad. I really do not know when they stopped chasing us, but we turned tail and ran with hearts a pumping not quite sure of what was about to happen to us. Hilarious now, but not sure what the evil Rat Pack was capable of back then. Sorry to ramble, but I just wanted you to know that you are very appreciated by fans like myslef and I will always think of the golden days of Mid South every time I hear your voice. Thanks for whats to come and also the memories! Sincerely, Kevin Laukhuf Wichita Falls, TX
i think huld hogan was a great charachter but the man could not wrestle. I also believe that his ego has gotten way too big. If the only way he'll come back to raw every year is to be given total creative control over his storyline than he should at least have the decency to take the loss to someone. I think it would have been appropiate to take the loss to Orton. Andre took the loss to him and it boosted his career, and he should have taken the loss to Orton to help boost his career. It would have fit since WWE has Orton call himself the Legend Killer and Hogan is the ultimate legend. I am a big Orton fan but that is not the only reason why I think Orton should have been the one to beat Hogan. Orton is a truly gifted wrestler and a great charachter.
Hi JR, a huge WWE fan from across the pond here! I was wondering, with the WWE recently bringing it's flagship shows over to the UK, do you think theres a chance that Wrestlemania could ever be held over here? The UK fans are arguably the most passionate fans in the world, and it would be absolutely amazing!
Hey JR, What are your thoughts on Sean Waltman? He's no longer under contract with Wrestling Society X and has a great history with WWE. Do you know of any interest in WWE signing him? He appeared at a house show months back with DX after a match and participated in the traditional DX crotch chop. If it were up to you, would he return to WWE? -Brett Cohen
Jeremy, I may not be JR, but i do have a pretty good answer to the question of whether or not the mainstream press will ever give the Pro Wrestling business (oops, i should say "sports entertainment**" right?) any respect:..................... No... it is unlikely that they ever really will. Between David Schultz giving 20/20 doofus John Stossel a well deserved smack upside the head and the various slabs of juvenile and tasteless jacka**ery perpetrated by recent iterations of the "creative" team (Katie Vick, Mohammed Hassan's hooded henchmen, McMahon challenging God Himself++, Doctor Hiney, Rosie vs Donald, etcetera in WWE and Vince Russo's "let's-throw-everydamnthing-at-the-wall-and-even-use-the-stuff-that-doesn't-stick-or-even-make-sense" approach to booking TNA) those of us who continue to watch will be percieved as the lowest common denominator of television viewership..........Between that and the way the concept of wins and losses has been so thoroughly de-valued, that to the casual viewer and the mainstream press the whole thing is nolonger seen as legitimate competition butperceived as mere spectacle and not worthy of the same regard as the more-accepted professional sports. (++ I'm totally unreligious and even i was mildly offended by the degree of sacrilege Mr. McMahon pulled off on that one) (** on this note, then, does this mean that in Genesis, Jacob and the Angel "sports-entertained" each other to a time-limit draw)
Hey, JR. I just quickly want to say that you are without a doubt the single greatest commentator in the history of pro wrestling, bar none. But on to my comment. I'll just go out and say it: I HATE John Cena. To me, it's a joke. He doesn't have mic skills, or any in ring skills whatsoever. And I, as a fan, think it's ridiculous how he is shoved down our throats. He has not, and will not ever earn the respect of such guys like HHH, HBK, Foley, Bret Hart or Steve Austin in my opinion. And I feel the only reason he is pushed and the champion, is because kids buy his merchandise. Which is a sad thing. I understand the reasons to why he is popular with the younger audience. But I mean, it's a joke to see him in the ring. He has a whooping total of 5 moves, and his matches are very predictable. My question is basically, what do you feel about what I have to say? Obviously you're not going to bash John Cena, but I'd like to see what you have to say on these criticizims that not only I feel, but many a fan. Sorry to be so negative, as i'm usually not regarding the wwe. But his dominance and how he's shoved down fans' throats every week really bothers me. ESPECIALLY if he's booked to end Taker's streak at mania 23. If that occurs, I promise you, I will NEVER watch wwe ever again. Thank you for your time, and keep up the phenominal job you've done for so many years
Hey J.R., Im 36 and have been watching wrestling since I was a kid...my All-Time Favorite being Nature Boy Ric Flair. I was wondering if you could maybe tell us a Road Story or something along those lines about The Nature Boy. Oh, and I love your stuff on RAW. You have been one of my favorite announcers since you were in WCW. Any cool story you wanna tell about your Partner In RAW, The King Jerry Lawler?
Hey JR I think John Cena had the WWE title long enough. I know he's the most popular wrestler right now, but I'm not a big fan of him. Who do you think will be the next WWE champ? When Cena loses!!!!!!! I think HBK deserves the WWE belt. When will we see Edge have a long title run like John Cena or Randy Orton? Internet rumours are saying that ECW is finished becasue Vince doesn't like the brand anymore any truth to it? Also RVD leaving WWE for TNA do you see RVD staying with WWE?
Hey J.R., great blog once again. To everybody complaining about the Royal Rumble finsh on Sunday with the Undertaker winning.... cry me a river, build a bridge, and GET OVER IT! WWE creative knows what they are doing. HBK will main event Wrestlemania versus John Cena in some way. I like the storylines on Smackdown and Raw. The build up for Wrestlemania so far has been great. The only thing people should be questioning is after Wrestlemania will we have two legends as champions?(Undertaker and HBK). J. R., I love the WWE product and always will. Keep up the great work. Long time wrrestling fan, Jeremiah.
do you feel that the HHH, ric flair feud was a bit of a bad idea considering their well documented friendship. It just gives you an extra reminder of the entertainment involved in wrestling. Also i have noticed the louder the crowd the more enjoyable for the viewer at home Wrestlemania, summerslam and rumble tickets should be sold to die hard fans only to ensure better audiences.
Hewwo. =P With the recent death of Bam Bam Bigelow, I can't help but remember Eddie's death, too. I have watched the footage of Vince announcing his death and cannot get over it, I cry everytime I see it (I know, an easy way to solve this problem would be to actually not watch it, but trust me, this has a point!! XD). I can't help but wonder... Will the same happen for other wrestlers when they... Pass? I aplogise for the morbid question, but I was just wondering. I know that Eddie was very involved in the business and definitely made his mark, but would even those with less illustrated careers like his have the same respects after life in the WWE? And, one more question. Do you, or anyone that you know of, read WWE Fanfiction? I plan on including you at some point in my fanfic, and was just wondering if you do. Tis all. :D Hugs from Stoke-on-Trent, England!! xoxoxo
Hey J.R. Check out this idea for an all face main event @ Wrestlemania - unify the three world titles in the elimination chamber. Lashley vs Cena vs Batista vs Royal Rumble winner Undertaker vs Raw"s final Royal Rumble survivor HBK vs ECW's final Royal Rumble survivor RVD. The match would be a huge fan favourite and regardless who wins we fans would not be disappointed. I realise this is just a dream match but wow what a match it would be, with the new champ being known as the WWECW World Heavyweight Champion.
JR, Thanks for doing this blog and sharing your thoughts and experiences. I enjoy hearing your recollections of the older wrestlers that I remember watching as a kid with my dad. In your opinion who was the best collective group the Four Horseman, DX, or other?
Hey Jr., What are your thoughts on Samoa Joe's in ring ability and mic skills? Do you think that maybe one day we could see him in the WWE? I hope so because he is one of the reasons i watch TNA.
JR, Thanks for a lot of memories when you talk about mid south and world class. Living in Texarkana, tx we went with my grandfather to shows at dallas and shreveport one or the other at least once a month. It made it special whenever the World CHamp was in one of the areas. I personally think WWE would be better served if they would have left booker t as chamion of Champions and that person would reign over the other 3 champs and they could challenge him on there own respective shows weekly and every pay per veiw. Remember the classic Von Eric Flair stuff at Texas Stadium?
Hey JR! I ordered the Rumble the other night and had three quick queries I hope you have the time to answer: 1. How come you and the King got to call the Hardys/MNM match? Does Vince decide or do you guys flip a coin? 2. I never paid attention before but it dawned on me that when Cole/JBL are calling a match, you and the King are still at ringside...what do you guys do? Chit chat, do your own commentating just for fun, etc. 3. Finally, how come you didn't call the Rumble match itself? Was it Vince's decision, or did you not want to? Thanks in advance if you can answer these.
Hi JR Quick question - You talk about talents stepping up to the plate and grabbing an opportunity, i would love a load of stars to do that just now, but my question is, how can they make that big impact when some get little to no TV time? And the fact that again rumours state, they are and are not allowed to do certain moves This is not a dig, i just want your honest opinion of what someone has to do to get their shot. Thanks again JR Kenny from Scotland
Hi Mr. Ross, I have to say that I vividly remember your "Booger Red" comments back in the day, especially at Wrestlemania 18 when you yelled out that one day booger red wil get what's coming to him. And yes, if people still remember it, it WAS one of your best ideas. As far as the current product goes, I have openly critisized the recent WWE product on this website but I have to say, the Royal Rumble 2007 was one hell of a P.P.V and definetly delivered. Seeing the two veterans HBK and Undertaker go for it all was as compelling as a broadcast could be. Kudos to the WWE! As far as the recent releases are concerned, some of them I can understand, but Tatanka and Sylvester Terkay gone? Tatanka recently turned heel and seemed to have lots of potential as a top mid-carder. And DAMN, for a man who was gone for nearly a decade, he was as intense as ever. I would have loved to have seen a Tatanka/Chris Benoit feud for the US title. What happened there? And Terkay? WWE was starting to push him in ECW with Burke...an eventual Terkay/Bobby Lashley feud could have been a big time match-up. Why was he released so quickly?
despite the third title rematch in ecw, this was the best show in a long time,I hope the old ecw turns into a dominant stable that goes hardcore on everybodys matches. They just go out and interupt matches with the new ECW and turn them hardcore. Then they can get storylines involving new and old ECW. Like Lashley vs. Sandman. RVD vs. Sabu. C.M Punk vs. Tommy Dreamer Holly vs. Balls Mahoney. This is the best angle they have had since ECW has started back up
Hey J.R. , How about them new tag team champs huh? So do you think Cena will ever be accepted by anyone, I mean he geats his respect but it always seems he is an outsider, alone you know, what are your thoughts on this?
Hi everyone, this message is for Wayne above: want to check out the hall of fame? Go to WWE.COM, click on superstars, and you'll find the link there. Hope this helps. What did everyone think of the Rumble? I can't work out that finish of the ECW title match. It made the impact player look a bit of a wimp! I don't think it did the brand any good what so ever.
JR, you are the man!
Hey, JR, the rumble commentary sucked without you calling it. Do you think that the media will ever treat the sport of pro wrestling with respect?
Hi JR, I definitely feel that Shawn Michaels warrants another DVD in his name. My suggestion would be "The Comeback Kid" which details some of his finest matches / angles since he returned to WWE in 02'. The only problem you would have is cutting the selection down to an appropriate size. But look at the quality matches he has had...from the top of my head: - Any match with Triple H - WM 19 with Chris Jericho - A Monday Night Raw classic with Shelton Benjamin - The Two triple threat matches with HHH and Benoit - Any match with Edge - Hulk Hogan match from Summerslam 05 - The WM 21 classic with Kurt Angle and subsequent rematches So many there JR - The man is incredible...Actually WWE.com should list some of his best matches from his comeback era and ask the fans to vote for their top 8 or 10 for the DVD. Only problem is though - who is to say he won't have any more classic matches! Thanks for the site JR. Jase from Western Australia...Don't forget Perth when you do those Aussie Tours!
Hey JR With so many great WWE dvds available I was wondering if there is the possibility of a dvd being made about the WWE Women's division? I am a huge fan of the female wrestlers I started to become a fan when Sensational Sherri Martel was managing Ted Dibiase and I know that Women's roles in the WWE go way back before then. With many WWE Superstars having their own special dvd and also the history of the WWE and Intercontinental title to it would be amazing to have the complete history of the Women's title on dvd featuring every Woman to hold the title and a match from that wrestlers era. Exciting!!!
JIM ROSS THE LORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD HAVE BEEN READING YOUR BLOG AND ARE PLEASED WITH HOW YOU HAVE PORTRAYED THE ALMIGHTY WARRIOR. THE DAY SHALL COME TO PASS WHEN THE CLOUDS PART AND ALL THE WARRIORS ACROSS THE NATION TAKE THE WORDS THAT HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO US BY OUR GREAT FOREFATHERS OF THE WESTERN WORLD AND UNLEASH UNMITIGATED DESTRUCTITY UPON ALL THOSE WHO STAND IN OUR WAY. YOU SIR HAVE SHOWN IN YOUR DIATRIBES TO BE TRUE TO THE WARRIOR AND IF YOU CONTINUE DOWN THIS PATH, YOU WILL NOT BE SACRIFICED IN THE NAME OF THE WARRIOR. ARGHHHHHHH
I liked the WWF so just tell WWE to sue them to get their name back or just keep it. I liked WWE better when it was called WWF.
Hi J.R Wow I've just found your website and I was compelled to leave you a message. I would like to say thank you to you and your colleagues who spend so much time and energy to entertain fans like me. I have Cystic Fibrosis which has recently got rather bad and I am pretty much housebound, and watching WWE programming is my favourite way to pass the time and distract me from the rest of my life. Not long ago, thanks to a charity here in England I was able to meet Shawn Michaels backstage at a WWE event here in the UK. I have to say he was so nice and welcoming and it made my whole year just meeting a legend like HBK, I hope he knows how loved and appreciated he is. I also had a surprise kiss from Lillian Garcia, who could ask for more?! Anyway I'm sidetracking, thanks again for being such a big part of my life Joe Derrick Bristol UK
Sorry to bother ya JR ! you are a great commentator your love for the buisness shows. I was wondering if WWE had any idea of releasing a Harley Race or Bruiser Brody DVD I watch all the old stuff I can and they were two of the greats
I have heard CM Punk has had a lot of heat backstage, and his push is completely gone. I am a HUGE CM punk fan and would hate to see that happen to one of the biggest potential stars in the business. I also heard WWE didn't want to lose him out of fear that he could make it big in TNA. This didn't make much sense to me because if WWE feels punk could be a star in TNA why not make him a star in WWECW? Is there any way you can clarify the situation.
hey jr i was at raw on the 29 in d texas and i wondred why can't the audience hear you and king
JR, I was watching the Austin-Hart match from Survivor Series 1996 last night, and I was wondering what your opinion on it was. Judging from your commentary, you seemed really into it, and I thought it was a great match as well.
My comment/question is about the ECW brand. Is it not worth either going full out to make it as good as Rw & Smackdown or just stopping with it altogether. At the moment it seems like it's just a show that's thrown together without any forward thinking, and speaking as a fan it's what I would call a missable show. I don't go out of my way to miss it but if I do it's no big deal.
OK, I just checked Wikipedia and it told me that Ivan Putski is already in the HoF....never mind then!!!! I wish the HoF was someplace that could be visited.....
J.R. 2 quickies... 1 - The "Randy Orton Stomp"? I know that's not original...correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it the Ronnie Garvin Stomp originally made famous by "Hands of stone."??????? 2 - Ivan Putski - Would "Polish Power" make J.R.'s HoF??? He's one of my old fav's so he'd definately be in mine...I know it's a long shot but I'be curious to know your thoughts...
i'm getting sick of this john cena overcoming the odds stuff.
Hey JR. Love the site. My question is how ome the old school WWF logo is able to be shown ie. WWE 24/7 matches, but the scribble logo is not and is blurred out during all the older content? Also, would love to hear your thoughts on the HOF this year and whether it will be televised, and if there are any plans for a SNME before WM 23. Thanks JR.
Is Jeff Hardy in the doghouse? Because, oh! that match against Khali last night looked like he was being taken to the woodshed, by the actual wood itself in the form of Khali.
I wish HBK would just go away sometimes. Trying to sneak into the Mania main event again like he did at WM20. Triple threat matches just don't have the big match feel that a one on one mania main event can have. Lets just have Taker vs Cena - streak vs title. There is no place for Shaun here, it's just too bad that ego's will probably come out on top. Shaun put over Edge or Orton. Him and HHH did a good job of making them look like idiots half the time so he might as well put one over.
JR, I have been a wrestling fan for a long as I can remamber, which at the age of 34 only really takes me back to the the AWA days of Da' Crusher and Dick the Bruiser and the beginnings of Hulkamania (when he was just "incredible"). My question for you is, in all of your years as a fan of the sport and the years of you working in the industry I was wondering if and when you are going to put out a book and if it will be an all out unadulterated telling of what the business really is like? You know the stuff we never get to see on TV or from the audiance? Kindest Regards Brian
JR I totally agree with your thoughts of Chris Adams. Ive often heard stories about the old WCCW days and seen a few tapes. I was working with my dad for a cemetary here in the DFW area and was there when they buried Chris Adams. It was very sad to see so few people pay respects for a man that entertained so many. My question is whats your opinion on the demise of these seemingly rock solid souls that are pro wrestler. Its the same thing over and over again...."Wrestler found Dead in his home/hotel room." Why do so many great legends of the game die in such sad and seemingly lonely ways?
Hi, I'm a fan of the old ECW for sure, but I also like aspects of the new ECW as well. I don't expect them to be the same product like so many fans do. I have some comments as a long time fan that go against what seems to be the majority of comments I read on the internet about some of the ECW "Extremists" of today. **HARDCORE HOLLY: Holly has put on some great matches for the new ECW and definitely deserves to be at the top of the ECW food chain, with mainstays RVD and Sabu. I don't see how people can question his hard work and ability, and it is obvious how tough the guy is. Just look at the stitches he recently got in his back during a great match against RVD. **TEST: Talk about upping his intensity... this guy has gone at 110% since his return to WWE (ala entering ECW). He has had some great matches with RVD that surprised many people that had been against the big man, but in recent weeks they have seemingly forgotten that the guy not only has the "look" but can really go in a match as well as perform decently on the mic. He deserves to be where he is on the card, and was booked completely wrong at the Rumble IMO. This guy has come back with a vengeance IMO, and should be respected for it. BTW, where were his boot laces in those first weeks/months of the new ECW? After the 2nd or 3rd match without them I started to think it must be a rib on him. Glad to see he can finally "lace his boots" now. **CM PUNK: He has a good to great upside, but I find his in ring work to be a bit sloppy for a guy his size. I'm thinking that in time it will tighten up quite a bit. I also find him to be a bit overhyped by internet fans at the moment, and I know that won't be a popular opinion. :) I think that he isn't quite ECW title material yet, but given time he will be there. I hope WWE give him a bit of time to develop more before they give him the ball. I for one don't want to see him run at 3/4 speed with it, because it seems to me like he big potential that he hasn't quite fulfilled yet. I can't wait to see this young guy develop into something more. **ECW ORIGINALS: I know how badly the fans of the old ECW love the "Originals" but I think as a whole they are a mixed bag. Some deserve to be at the top like Sabu and RVD, but some IMO do not. No offense to the wrestlers themselves, but Tommy Dreamer, Justin Credible (no longer with the company) and several others (some also no longer with the company) are on my "list" of those that don't/didn't belong in the top rung of the new WWECW despite their "original" status. **PAUL HEYMAN: I was a Paul E. Dangerously and the Dangerous Alliance mark back in the day, so of course I am a big fan of his. I was very sorry to see him leave the new ECW, although I am not sure of how much influence he actually had on the product when he left. Still, his presence seemed to lend a sense of legitimacy to the ECW name brand even if it wasn't booked like the "Original" ECW and filled to the brim with "Original" stars. I miss him and think that his presence leaving the show slammed the door on the face of a lot of old ECW fans that weren't happy with the new ECW to begin with. **ECW vs WWECW: I don't think the new ECW gets the respect it deserves. A lot of old ECW fans expect to see the old ECW or nothing, and that is unrealistic in my view. Sure, this ECW isn't a perfect thing by far... and in some ways it is inferior to the original, but to dismiss it for not being the original is premature as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure that everyone involved is the "best" fit (Bobby Lashley for one), but I know it must be hard with injuries/contracts/etc to really book the brand "ideally" in a way to make the best of it. **FUTURE OF THE NEW ECW: I hope it stays around and keeps making shows and gives the fans another alternative to the regular programming. To that extent, I also hope that the booking style changes a bit to showcase something a little less "WWE" and something a bit more unique and worthy of a seperate branding. To that extent I wouldn't mind seeing Smackdown rebranded to the nWo or WCW Smackdown either. I think it would be a great way to individualize the shows and separate the brands even more. **ECW RIP, LONG LIVE ECW!!!: I think this says it all. Here's to the best of luck to all the brand extensions and the hope that everything will only improve in the future. I don't mind having more options as long as they don't water down the overall product, and I think in time with the proper storylines/booking that this is possible and I enjoy the idea of 3 brands with their own shows. **JR: You are a credit to the industry, always have been in my and many other's opinions. Don't let they naysayers get to you, and I think that goes without saying as I imagine you are beyond being all too bothered with negative remarks at this point in your life/career. I'm sure you've seen/heard just about everything from good to bad. You JR, are a survivor. I know that YOU know that, but wanted to assure you that many of us fans, especially the respectful "old school" ones know it too. Entertaining us through thick and thin, in sickness and in health... your "marriage" to the fans of wrestling (mid-south, NWA, WCW, WWF/WWE, etc) has been a successful one. Thanks for all the great memories and even for the BBQ sauce. Any ECW comments I've made that you'd like to address that you haven't already would be appreciated if possible. Keep on keeping on, we're glad to have you in the "bizniss" as long as you are able and interested.
JR, thanks so much for all the blogs and for all the comments to the 'net community over the years in general. It's always nice to hear from you. I have been a fan of Wrestling since before cable television came to Alaska, around 30 years ago. You have been my favorite announcer since the first time I heard you for the same reasons so many state: listing the backgrounds of wrestlers, knowledge of the moves and psychology, etc. I am an "old school" fan as well that strongly prefers wrestling ability over personality, but I do enjoy a great personality as well. Especially one from a strong heel. I don't think we see enough heels with the right kind of push anymore (ie; early 90's WCW Rick Rude, followed by Big Van Vader (terrible skits aside), mid 90's initial year for Steve Austin in WWF, etc). I for one would love to see a heel that was dominate with little need for cheating, although obviously not above it. I have always been a fan of the really strong monster types and have felt that Kane deserves that type of treatment with a decent World/WWE title reign to go with it. I was hoping for this when he unmasked and felt the "Psychotic Kane" would make a great "seemingly unstoppable monster" to build an early Cena against. I still feel that old formula (all-powerful heel vs underdog babyface) is underutilized if not nearly forgotten at this stage. Do you think it would work for the fans of this generation? Or do you think that it is still in use and I have simply not realized the application of it? I have watched every televised TV event and don't recognize it as having been used in quite some time although WWE likes to make it seem like Cena is usually an underdog. In my humble opinion underdogs don't win nearly every match unless there is strong interference or extenuating circumstances (as Cena always seems to have in his programs, and even then seems to triumph during those "overwhelming odds" more often than not). I only mention Cena as an example of what I don't believe to be an accurate depiction of that formula, as well Umaga's "monster" status seems to me to be built on wins over lesser oponents other than DX (who lost to him only because of extenuating circumstances/interference and not because he beat them outright like a true monster would). Sorry for the VERY long post. :) I hope it wasn't too long and made it easier to come up with a response. Thanks so much for even attempting to read it. - Alaskan Guy PS, I am also a big fan of the idea of renaming the Smackdown brand to either WCW Smackdown (as mentioned by "Ed" just above me) or even better "nWo Smackdown" as a way to further legitimize brand separation. I think an nWo Smackdown with maybe Hogan or even Bischoff as a gimmicked "new owner/GM" would go over big time with fans and with the blue flickering to black and white followed by nWo spraypainted over the Smackdown opening sequence. I would love a comment on what you think about that idea as well as it would be a way to bring back the gimmick but with a new feeling of it really taking the brand over and thus give it new life. Like any idea the right writing/booking would be needed, but it seems very "doable" to me. It's the way I have my video games set up... at least my "in head" storylines. I admit, I am a rasslin' geek, what can I say?
JR is to Royal Rumble Commentary as Use of your feet is to Soccer. How stupid you weren't in it dude.
You have stated on numerous occasions that this site has no affiliation with the WWE. I assume it's okay for you to critise the WWE. My question for you is simple. Please make sense for me of having three Lashley vs. Test matches in the spand of a week, especially after Test had himself deliberately counted out after the second one. Test basically was telling the world he didn't care about the ECW Championship. Even you as a WWE employee would have to agree that was not only a senseless ending to a match, but it's also more senseless to continue the fued.
hi jr slick should be in the hall of fame whats he up to theses days and also rick martel should be in the wwe hall of fame to
The Undertaker has come back home to Raw. Do you think he will win the title and retire to go out on top? He is one of the WWE hardest workers and legends. It looks like he has been not as active in the last couple of years. I remember watching him in the USWA in Louisville when he was the Master of Pain. I also seen him drive racecars at the old Louisville Motor Speedway. They used to have co promotions with the USWA were the wrestlers would race each other. That was a sight to see. Will WWE come to Louiville anytime soon. I have a daughter who is really into wrestling and i would love to take to a live event. She is a Cena fan(gasp).Who owns the USWA film library. I would love to see some of the old matches. Many past and present WWE Superstars come from this territory. I don't know if i am bias because I do not care for Cena, but I thought he performed worse than normal in the Raw match against Edge and Orton. Going on to Orton. I used to not like him. But with his ****iness, ability, and look, I think he can be one of the greatest heels of the future. Hats of to Edge. He has come a long way. From the Brood to holding gold on numerous occasions and being the top heel in the company. Last but not least Shawn Michaels. Turn heel and superkick the hell out of everyone.
I understand the whole brand-seperation and how it helps to highlight more stars. But the whole Red/Blue WWE just doesnt cut it for me. Do you think Vince will ever heal the wounds of the Monday Night Wars enough to just rename SD as WCW and give us a more realistic brand seperation? Both with their own unique histories?
