I spoke to Stone Cold last night on the phone while I was attending the 4th Annual Toby Keith Foundation Charity Auction for children with cancer. Steve is really working hard promoting his new movie “The Condemned” which is in theatres now. I am anxious to hear how you like the film as I know many Austin Fans will be going to the movies over the next few days. You won’t be disappointed!
Let’s address a few of your comments:
Jason- Starting a career in broadcasting in the sports entertainment business is no different than starting a broadcasting career in any other field. I started in radio and worked my way into TV wrestling. You have to have a demo tape. Find a way to get some experience and it certainly doesn’t have to be doing wrestling. It probably helps if you aren’t attempting to do wrestling, quite honestly.
Bill- Gagne vs. Maddog Vachon may be a featured rivalry some day on WWE 24/7. I don’t know where or how you obtain a DVD of just Verne vs. Vachon.
Sam- I like Fit Finlay’s in-ring work because he is tough, sound and knows how to wrestle. Lots of young wannabe wrestlers could benefit by watching the Irishman closely in the ring. Finlay is old school, but old school works today as well as it ever did.
Kyle- I am sure I have eaten some Bar-B-Q while in Mississippi in the old Mid South days, but can’t recall a specific place. I spent ample time in Biloxi, Greenwood, and Greenville on a regular basis.
Randy- When I was coming up in the business, the most influential territory where most wrestlers wanted to work was the “New York territory,” which is, of course now the WWE. When a wrestler got booked in “New York” that was generally considered their big break.
Sean- My favorite band of all time is The Eagles. I try and see them every time they are on tour. Their music is timeless.
Shannon- I never had much dealings with Lou Albano, but when I did, I always found him to be old school funny, and Gorilla Monsoon always told me that Lou was a much more viable manager than he was a wrestler.
Bill- Some of our home remodeling is landscape work, which stops every time it rains! Beware when you hire people who insist on working strictly by the hour. Bob Vila, I am not, and I don’t own any tools other than the basics and am damn sure not buying a lawn mower!
Katie- I see no reason Lilian shouldn’t be back ring announcing sooner than later after having ACL surgery. Her “40 time” might be affected, but her voice should be good to go.
Adam says, “J.R. dancing like Cryme Tyme would be sweet.” Adam, are you in the pet coon goofy category or did you eat paint chips as a kid? Watching J.R. dance would be like watching a cow walk on ice!
Alexandre- Most wrestling website reporting is done thru their sources which are frequently some of the wrestlers themselves or others “on the inside”. Sources can be good or simply full of B.S. I have read scoops, that I have found out later were true, and I have read scoops that I knew without a doubt were baseless. If you notice these sites have to protect their sources, as rarely is anyone ever quoted. Josh- Bar-B-Q unhealthy? Smoked chicken and turkey are extremely healthy and our sauces are too. Bar-B-Q isn’t just about “red meat”.
Luke- I think Edge is one of the top-ten performers in the business today and if he stays healthy, Edge’s best days are still in front of him. Edge might become one of the premier color analysts when his wrestling days are done, if he wanted to pursue it.
Ian- No Ian, if that is your real name. I did not see UFC 70 nor did I see “my homeboy” Matt Grice get choked out. It can happen to the best of them, nonetheless. I am not anti UFC by any means, but my travel schedule lately has been somewhat aggressive.
Mike- Crockett Promotions always considered Worldwide Wrestling as their “A” show and NWA Pro as the “B” show. That was their positioning, not mine. I never liked playing on the “B team” in any thing I ever did, including wrestling commentary. Bob Caudle and I worked hard to make our show the best it could be, and I felt we more than held our own with Tony Schiavone and David Crockett.
Yasmin- “Does J.R. and The King have their own tour bus?” No Yasmin, but we do travel together on land virtually every week in the finest mid-sized autos Budget can provide. Those car trips might make for a helluva reality show! We are not always politically correct, but we do make each other laugh and we both have some “interesting” observations on life, sports, and politics.
JJB- Thanks for checking in from Paris, France. I was told by some WWE Superstars that the crowd in Paris was red hot. I hope to visit Paris in the future. I might need an interpreter as my French isn’t so good, but neither is my English, for the record.
Richard- I hear that HHH is rehabbing like a madman and will be 100% sometime by this summer. HHH works as hard as any one I have been around and still has plenty of fuel left in the tank. As to whether DX will re-form when HHH returns is another question—and one I don’t have an answer for. My best guess would be that it would be 50/50.
Mac- Of course I would love to see Steve Austin wrestle a series of matches with HBK, like most every fan I know would, but I would not bet any cash that it will ever happen. Stone Cold is an actor now, but he will never stray too far from his fans. Who knows? Perhaps the Texas Rattlesnake will lace his boots up one more time, but I just don’t see it happening. I will simply say, “Never say Never”.
Brodie- I have no clue where women’s wrestling is heading or the shape it will take in the future. I do feel women’s wrestling definitely has a place within the business. The question will always be “steak or sizzle” and I tend to lean toward guessing that “sizzle” may win out at least in the short haul.
We will answer more comments, time permitting, but now it is back to Backlash prep and the NFL Draft…
By the way, we just had to order 25,000 more Beef Jerky labels so business has definitely picked up!
Thanks.
J.R.
