J.R.'s Family Bar-B-Q

Coke or Pepsi… WWE India.. Cranky Emails.. Trojans National Champs?.. Smoking Ain’t Grilling.. HBK DVD..

Feedback time, you crazed Bar-B-Q loving, Beef Jerky eatin’ Slobber-Knockers:

Jon- Not sure why you want to know my schedule but I usually depart OKC on Sundays and return on Tuesdays. On PPV weekends I depart OKC on Saturdays as a rule. When I am home I work on restaurant business, have WWE responsibilities to handle, devote time to our website, watch OU practice football when they are in season, try to spend ample time with family, and enjoy the occasional happy hour with my friends. I actually stay pretty busy. I am also proud to say we have great neighbors that keep an eye on things while I am on the road plus we have family here more often than not while I am gone. Not to mention the local police take good care of our property.

Tony- I assume one could make an argument for Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. I am glad I have NOTHING to do with the selection process even though I still get comments from some who apparently think I do by the way their word their comments. Did you know that Wendi and Hugo Savinovich, yes that Hugo of Spanish announces table fame, were once husband and wife?

GitRDunn- When the three announce teams work a tri branded PPV match together we simply try and maintain some level of eye contact, respect each other and try not to verbally step on one another. It is challenging and it is awfully easy to get into personal debates but that really doesn’t help the product or put the spotlight on the wrestlers. The story is about what goes on between the ropes not at the announce table. Announcers that love to talk about themselves and their personal agendas usually don’t make it long term. The goal of any announcer is to tell a compelling story and to embellish the talent in the ring.

Kenny- What do the King and J.R. do while the other brands broadcast a match during a tri branded PPV? We listen to the commentary of the announcers that are working. I enjoy watching the matches as you have to admit we have pretty good seats. Plus, King will occasionally “doodle” or so I hear.

Shadow- Michael Hayes was a superb color commentator back in the UWF days and I am sure he could be again if called upon. Michael was and is a natural antagonist with a quick wit and sharp tongue. Plus, Michael always displayed great crowd psychology. I still say it is a miracle that Hayes is still alive after the journey he was on for many years giving new meaning to life in the fast lane. Also there is no truth to the rumor that Michael Hayes and Dog the Bounty Hunter go to the same hair stylist.

Rohan- I don’t know when the WWE is returning to India. The last time the WWE was there and held some outdoor events it was a security nightmare. Perhaps there are some new, modern indoor facilities there now that I am unaware of. Bottom line I have NOTHING to do with the routing of live events, TV’s or PPV’s. NOTHING. For your sake though Rohan I hope the WWE gets to entertain you on your home turf. One would assume the Great Khali would be “big” there, no pun intended.

Peter- What do I think if Mark Henry crossed paths with Mae Young? That’s easy. CRAZY LOVE!! BIG LOVE!!

Matt- I would give the nod to Southern Cal as the pre-season favorite to win the National Title in college football. They are loaded with talent, have been recruiting well the past several seasons and don’t have to win a league championship game to make it to the BCS national title contest. Of course, I am pulling for the Sooners which I am sure shocks many.

Former WWE Fan- “The other brands are garbage to you!” Excuse me? Did someone miss their meds today? Are we a little cranky “Former Fan”? What exactly is it that I have to do with the “other brands”? That would be nothing. Too bad Dr. Melfi is no longer practicing or I would try and get you her phone number. Bye bye and drive safely.

Charlotte- “Who’s better, Hogan or Undertaker?” I assume you mean a better wrestler. There’s no right answer here on that one. Hogan was a legend in one era and Taker is a legend in another. Hogan was a yellow and gold clad hero that exuded optimism while the Undertaker is a dark character who represents a completely different mindset. Both are big time players. Taker’s longevity will be hard to replicate, however.

Steve Sax- Really cute comment Steve. Not sure why you are being so bitter and being such a wisearse but I and anyone else with any functioning brain cells can read your veiled Macho Man references loud and clear. But what is your point? Yes, of course I worked with Randy and Heenan at Mania 9 and the KOR in Dayton way back in 1993. I enjoyed it and have never damned Savage perhaps much to your chagrin. But I still can’t facilitate Randy’s induction into the WWE HOF or his return to the WWE for that matter. I wish I could but… no can do. I especially found your little “cowboy hat gimmick” line to be particularly special. Oh, yeah!

Steve- I think King is Coca Cola man but sometimes we are provided Pepsi products at WWE events and he takes what ever is free. Key word is free. Seriously, King has a large Coca Cola collection of memorabilia in his Memphis home but for the record no longer keeps large sums of cash in his juke box.

Martin- Congrat’s on your career! I wish you great success and to have as much fun in the business as I have had and continue to have over the past 4 decades. Hard work, passion and dedication solve many ills. Always respect the business and the perfumers who make it great including the fans.

Jenny- “Will the WWE ever do an EXPLICT sex scene on TV? Good Lord I hope not. Did you ever hear of the term “in the privacy of one’s own home?” I’m no prude but……get a hold of yourself. Oops, wrong choice of words.

Sue- Three things to get good at while training to be a wrestler? Get good at fundamental wrestling skills, get good at verbalizing, and get good at being reliable and trustworthy.

Scott- Are we going to have outside grills at our restaurant? No, sir. We will have no grills in sight as we don’t grill our Bar-B-Q, we smoke it. We will have a giant smoker out back at our place where we will smoke all our meats on the premises. Our meats will never be over direct heat as you might see in one’s backyard cooking burgers on a grill. Remember, there is a huge difference in grilling and smoking. SLOW smoking is how great “Q” is prepared. I hope you will come visit us. We hope to open around July 11.

Ryan- Considering I just did a long DVD interview for the upcoming HBK DVD I vividly remember the interview I conducted with Shawn where Shawn kept jumping up and down giving me the crotch chop and generally being annoying. His job was to P.O. people and he was good at it. I was not “mad” at him for doing it but it was somewhat distracting I have to admit. Great antagonists have a way of getting under people’s skin and HBK was a great antagonist back in the day. Shawn’s DVD should be awesome as his journey in the biz has been extraordinary and I am proud to say I saw him in his first territory in person. I still remember that day in Shreveport at the Irish McNeil Boys Club at a taping of Mid South Wrestling.

Is most everyone over the Sopranos finale yet?? As I said before I was expecting more but a case can be made for leaving one “wanting more” as it relates to story telling. However, in this case and with this particular episode being the adios episode it is easy to see how many folks could be frustrated at the finale. But perhaps we should all remember that it is only a TV show and it is fiction and taking shows that are fictional too seriously isn’t exactly healthy. Just one guy’s opinion.

Thanks for checking out our site. Our latest Hall of Fame offer is up and running. I personally signed a limited number of shirts and I hope you take advantage of the shirt/Jerky offers we have put together for you. Keep those comments coming and I will continue to try to provide you with some feedback as best I can. I appreciate you all understanding that I cannot respond to everyone but I will continue to do the best I can. Take care.
BOOMER SOONER!

What ever happened to Ahmed Johnson?
Hey JR i was just wondering what your thoughts were on CM Punk. In your opinion can he be a big time player? Given enough promo time i personally think so. Also the Hall of Fame is for any wrestlers that are in the business no matter of what company in the past right? So im just wondering whether you think guys like Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Sting etc will ever get in? Also one quick one, Triple H.... is he a nice guy outside of the ring? thanks for your time. Michael.
"Did someone miss their meds today?" That was fairly insensitive to those of us who do have mental illness' Mr. Ross. You lose skittle points for the day.
What did you think of the Flair vs Funk I Quit match from Clash '89? I noticed you did commentary.
J.R. -- You mentioned that you recently did an interview for an upcoming Shawn Michaels DVD. Do you know approximately when that DVD will be released and/or what matches will be included? Thanks! -- Jeff
Dear JR, I was wondering if you knew if Byte This was going to come back anytime soon? I really enjoed those shows and inside jokes the hosts would crack. One of my favorite ones is when Matt Striker came on and did impressions of other wrestlers!
To the fan who said Shawn vs. Bret at survivor series was the first ladder match in the WWE....not true, shawn and Bret had one before that when Bret was intercontinental champ(it was on the ladder match DVD duh)....at the Survivor series it was their second, a few months later. Bret as WWf champ and Shawn was IC champ....everyone does make mistakes.....Stay Great JR!!
Hey JR, I'm 24 years old and I was told that I'm too old to learn how to wrestle, do you agree with that?
I am going to miss Sherri Martel. Her most memorable moments was at Wrestlemania 7, when she turned on the Macho King, and her and Elizabeth scrapped for a minute. I spoke with Sherri at a wrestling convention a few months prior to her death, and all she was saying is how much Elizabeth is missed. RIP Queen Sherri, I know your Macho King will always be proud of what you accomplished.
J.R., what is up these days with Dr.Death Steve Williams, and his cancer treatment? Send him my prayers, will ya!
J.R. - Great blog. I wanted to correct a misstatement you made, though. Mid-South was not Shawn Michaels's first territory. That would be Texas All-Star Wrestling (the former Southwest Championship Wrestling). Shawn was a former TASW tag team champion as part of the "American Force" tag team with Paul Diamond, who would also end up in the WWF. This was about a year before Michaels went to Mid-South. He and Diamond (who seemed to be getting top billing over Michaels at the time, if you can believe it) were feuding with a tag team called The Hoods, who were in the tradition of masked tag teams like the Assassins and the Grapplers. I grew up in East Texas and saw Michaels live a few times with TASW at the Beaumont Civic Center. He was really green but clearly had lots of potential. It was cool to see him evolve the way he did in Mid-South, where I'm sure he picked up a lot of wisdom from the great roster you had at that time. Anyway, I'm in OKC quite a bit and can't wait till your restaurant is open for business. Thanks for the consistently informative and entertaining blogs!
One, I like to say that I am a great fan of the support. On RAW, I saw a mistake and wanted to get your insight. When annoucers make oversights on the background of two wrestlers, especially if they feuded in the past on pay per views, etc, are adjustments made to correct it or it keeps going. For example, the King suggested that Lashley/Booker never wrestled, even though they feuded on smackdown and wrestled at a pay per view. It's been quite a few times that happens were the history between two wrestlers get lost in the shuffle. How does that get fixed? Two, will there be a reboot of the ECW television championship? I I totally understand the tag team titles not being used since you have 1 hour to do a show for now. But not having a secondary title for the product seems to take away from it and not develop the 2 tiers in the other brands. I think having the TV title (something to be defended every week) will help in constantly having a challenge for the ECW performers (even developing a tournament on TV for it so it adds intrigue) to achieve every week and give the heavyweight title much more of a signifiance. Your thoughts?
Hey JR, what did you make of the ShockMaster's debut in WCW on the "Flair show". It was live and completely ruined the character. nonetheless it was hysterically funny. What do you think?
Hi Mr Ross, First of all I gotta tell you how much I respect and admire you for enduring everything you have in your career. I just read Bill Watts book (The Cowboy and the Cross: The Bill Watts Story: Rebellion, Wrestling and Redemption)and I was wondering is Mr. Watts really such a difficult man because judging from other interviews and books that I have read he sure has a bad rep. but from rading his book he seems demanding, but not anything nearly as nasty as other's make him out to be...your opinion...if i'm not putting you on the spot. Another question I have for you is do you follow any independent wrestling promotions? My family (my dad, 2 of my kids. and myself) love to go to the indy cards and have a great time. Thanks for the memories and keep up the great work. Ken Vandersyde Butler, Pa PS: How long do you think it will be before your restaurant opens a chain in PA?? Your menu sounds delightful.
JR, Brief question. In your opinion, how many workers does it take to maintain a good roster? Back in the territory days, I remember several promoters having about a dozen guys to work the cards every week, plus the occasional jobber. But it seems to me that in today's environment that wouldn't work, although the ECW brand doesn't have many more active wrestlers than that these days.
Mr. Ross, allow me to state how much of a fan I am of yours. Your devotion and passion for the business is an inspiration to me in my line of business. I may have a "beating a dead horse" question here: In my opinion, we haven´t had a champion (in any brand) that has electrified the stage like some previous champs. Eventhough John Cena is achieving this in his own right (of which he has won me over so to speak with his outside ring activities)he hasn´t really reached the caliber of Stone Cold, Undertaker, HBK, HHH, etc. So. . . if you agree, who do you think may have the potential to achieve this "immortality"? Mr. Kennedy? Matt Hardy? These two I am keeping a close eye on. Thanks for your response. Oh! I am planning a trip soon and there is no question. . I am stopping by JR'S. Really can´t wait.
Hey JR! I love the jerky. Do you have anymore Ernie Ladd stories to tell?
What is your opinion of The Sandman being drafted to RAW as i think this will bring a hardcore edge to RAW that it has needed for a while now.Keep up the good work!!!!!!Thanks
can you please tell me if this is true does the wrestlemania 24 package offer a stay at universal studios where tna tapes, is wwe almost telling wwe fans to go see impact.
I dont want to sound like a know it all so i apologise in advance if it appears i am but going back a few years during the "attitude" era didnt mae young and mark henry get it on and she got pregnant and gave birth to a hand? i know it was such a far fetched storyline, it was when the dudley boys were about and i remember them powerbombing mae young through a table off the stage, that woman must have bones of steel.
hi JR. just had a thought, what with all the celebs coming into the WWE in recent times...why not get someone with a great physical presence and a real badass...i am of course talking about Dog the Bounty Hunter himself would be awesome seeing him in the ring! what's your thoughts?
Is Kane injured? Is that why he hasn't been on Smackdown since 'One Night Stand'?
JR, Where would you rate the team of Dr. Death & Ted DiBiase that you got to see in the mid 80's with the all time great teams in history? What are your memories of my favorite Mid South moment of all time, the Ric Flair vs Ted DiBiase bloodbath where Murdock attacked DiBiase before the match?
Dear JR - I hope you are well - I was hoping you could lend your thoughts to the usage of William Regal. My comment comes about because I witnessed a couple of Benoit - Regal matches on Velocity and Smackdown and wondered why they have not been given a PPV match with a decent time length? Surely this would be a 5 Star as they have already proved what kind of a match they could have. Regals style does not always complement other wrestlers but him and Benoit (some have argued Benoit could have a great match with a table leg) seemed to click. Also, just a quick side thought - the planned main event for Wrestlemania VIII had Hogan V Sid and I have hear that Sid was not meant to kick out of the Legdrop of Doom(TM!?!?!) if this was the case how did the finish come about and was Papa Shango meant to make an appearance. I've always wondered... Thank you for your time - keep up the great work. Luke (UK)
Hey JR great blogs I love reading them. I was just wondering if you had any advice on how to become a wrestling booker not for WWE, but for any wrestling company.
Hi JR, I reckon you've probably answered 2 of these questions before but i'm gonna ask anyway... Do you think Owen Hart should be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame? what do you remember most about Owen? do you think that someone in WWE might hire Bon Jovi to sing at Summerslam in NJ? that would be wicked even though I live in Scotland.
Hi J.R, I have just watched the moment on a past RAW were you physically laid into Paul Heymen before the Kings' return to the announce position, classic stuff. My question to you is what are you're thoughts on catchphrases used by wrestlers from times gone by and the present? Do you have a favourite? There are a plethora to choice from...Steve austins "give me a hell yea" and " thats the bottom line.." The Rock was the master of the catchphrase " it doesn't matter what your...", "just bring it" and of course "if you smeeeeeeeeeell" and Cena's " want some? come get some!, and "you cant see me". My personal favourite is Rick Flair's (which i haven't heard him use in a while) "To be the man, WOOOO, you gotta beat the man" I think out of all of them, that one really rings true. Are the phrases written for the superstars, or do they come up with them themselves?
Hey Good Ol' JR, I love your blogs. You are completely straight forward and I appreciate it very much. I love the wrestling business to death. I'd love to hear any stories you have about Magnum TA. He was my hero back when. But that's not what I really wanna talk about here. I got as a gift (a gift I gave many hints about) a couple bottles of your sauces. Barbq chipotle, jalepeno honey mustard, and chipotle ketchup. OK that's one more than a couple. I just want to encourage people to mix the Jalapeno Honey Mustard and the Chipotle Ketchup with just a *little* kick of the Barbq Chipotle. and by little I mean just a little. That is one of the best sauces ever. Try that mother on a chicken tender and tell me I'm wrong. You can't. Might not work that well on beef though. But then again I've not tried it on beef so it might reign supreme. Thanks for everything JR I mean it. You are the voice of wrestling in my generation and you are a legend. Your sauces kick $%^$ and I encourage everyone out there that enjoys a sauce laden slab of meat (count me in) to check it out. Ju$tin

Hey J.R. I don't know if you've really heard it but i've known many people to criticise Mark Henry's wrestling skills, i think it's ridiculous. I remember a match he had with Taker on Smackdown in February last year and it was awesome. Do you think he get's criticism because people only think of his size and feel he 'squashes' people? For a big guy i think technically Mark Henry is pretty good.
Hi JR, every once in a while we'll see an actor, singer, and other athletes in the audience during televised show, is there any celebrity in particular you would like to see at an WWE event? Hope ya have a good weekend! Much Love & Respect!
Hi, JR i hope your well. Have, you ever expirenced, wittnessed Wrestlers that get really nervous before coming out to wrestle. Are there Wrestlers with big potential that dont make it because there unconfident and nervous? Or have HOF and huge names of today notably been nervous before going out to perform? Also do you know of any wrestlers that have any superstitions? Do you or King have any? Thanks Dan
If Vince was hit by a bus and died for real tomorrow, what would wwe do then?
I don't have a question, I just wanted to say I've been following the WWF/E for years and I've always been a huge fan of yours. I truly believe you're the epitome of what a professional wrestling announcer should be, pure entertainment. I think anyone that critisizes J.R.'s announcing ability is missing the point of what prowrestling is all about. Maybe I have not watched the WWE with much consistency in 8 years, but that does not make me any less of a J.R. fan. I'd also like to add black people have love for J.R. and the WWE too. There seems to be a myth that only famous black athletes watch the WWE, but that is completely untrue.
Hey Jr, Just a Sherri memory of mine that no-one seemed to talk of. Yeas she was good with Shawn Michaels but she was great with Savage - the Sensational Queen. Her dialogue with Sapphire (dusty’s manager)at a Royal Rumble was hardcore. I still remember (and use … sigh) some of the lines - ‘What makes you think that you can breathe the same air as i breathe’ & ‘How’d you get here? I bet they got a pickup truck to load you in the back’ — Classic stuff man! Which reminds me - any chance of a bit more Brother Love (the Girls feud started on the Brother Love Show), In my opinion he never got old lol
JR, when Stone Cold is in the ring what kind of beer does he drink?
What do you think would happen if Shawn Michaels never had his ack injury in 1997? I think once Shawn went down, alot of things picked up. Would we ever see the emergence of Triple H and The Rock? Would Shawn be at the religious point he is today? I'm curious to know your answer...
Did you see Thea[aka Big Mamma of Benjamin]on Last Comic Standing tonight? She is a riot. I miss seeing her on Raw. Had to Tivo due to Ghosthunters also being on at 8pm. Can't miss that one either. The celeb. impersonator show on ABC is also funny, I'd like to see folks immitate some WWE personalities. lol I only wish Discovery would move Cash Cab prime time to another night, love that one too!
Hey JR, I just wanted to let you know that Shelton Benjamin's "Mom" is a contestant on NBC's Last Comic Standing and she is doing pretty well, advancing to the next round! This leads me to my question, how does the WWE find their non-wrestling talent who aside from the obvious stripper type?
JR, What will you be serving at your restaurant? Coke or Pepsi products? What about Diet Dr. Pepper.
Jimmy, the Shawn Michaels jumping crotch chops to your face (complete with about 3 pairs of socks stuffed into his biker shorts) was one of my favorite moments in sports entertainment history. Just wanted to thank you for your part in taht moment...you played the role of the straight man better than even Okerlund could have. Kudos on a job well done.
Hey JR...although Dan Spivey can no longer wrestle, do you ever see him coming back to the WWE in a managerial or other position, especially under his Waylon Mercy character... I think Waylon Mercy teaching "his craft" to another "psychotic" character would be something to see. Waylon Mercy was also one of my favorite personas that i've watched in the WWE, albeit his short tenure; watching his eyes as he slapped on that sleeperhold of his just chilled ya... that's when you know you've got a great character, in my book... You know what I mean?
JR, What do you think of the Big 12 North this year?
What do you think was the bigger rivalry? The Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys or WWE vs. WCW? I think you could have a little fun with this one. Were there any wrestlers who liked each team, that heckled each other during game week? I know Helms is a big Skins fan while JBL loves the Cowboys. Anything like that?
I've read in a couple of your posts that you actually enjoyed watching the early nWo over in WCW, which some might think out of character for an employee of WWE. What are some of your favorite nWo moments? What did you think of Kevin Nash's Arn Anderson impression? I heard that it upset Arn quite a bit, but I thought his impression was hysterical and I'm a Double A fan. (Average carpentry skills?) Also, what are your thoughts on the charter member of the new World order never being considered an nWo leader? It was always "nWo Hollywood" or Kevin Nash's "nWo Wolfpac". I always thought Scott Hall deserved that role more than anyone as he was there (in WCW) first and his coming heralded the begining of the nWo era and, subsequently, the Monday Night Wars and the Attitude Era. And, finally, had the nWo remained intact in WWE, do you think Triple H would have joined? Or would have seen an nWo/DX fued? The preceding announcement has been paid for by the fans of the new World order.
With the WWE being in Big D on July 2 for a Supershow, and Micheal Hayes being there with Smackdown!, any chance that we see a little Freebird / Von Erich reunion??? :)
How do you feel about wrestlers and other people involved in the business writing novels? Do you feel that sometimes these write ups can create situations by stretching the truth or being biased? Also, what are your thoughts about the WWE films?
I remember Shawn's tv debut in Mid South. He defeated Skandor Akbar. It's been a lot of fun watching him grow from that skinny kid to the top of wrestling as the Heartbreak Kid to today being a true legend.
JR - I read your blog every chance I get and I just want to know how you keep your patience with the repetitive and sometimes antagonistic questions you get asked. The Randy Savage issue is well beyond a joke, I mean he was a legend in his time but it has been so long since he has been in the WWE. People need to move on and get over it. Keep up the good work with the blog and at the WWE. I live in Australia but hope to holiday in the USA soon and your restaurant will be a must visit venue on my trip. I wish you every success with this venture, after all the joy you have brought people through wrestling you deserve it. Best Wishes David - Sydney, Australia
Hi J.R! I am a long time fan of yours since way back in the WTBS days! I’ve got a Gordon Solie question for you: What was it about him, in your mind, that made him the best? Was it his delivery? Was it his knowledge of the business & ring psychology? And what is the most important thing/lesson you learned from him? I am very anxious to hear your thoughts on what made “The Dean” one of the best to ever call a wrestling match. Thanks! Carlos
