J.R.'s Family Bar-B-Q

The Benoit Funeral..

For a week that has been so personally rewarding for the Ross family with the successful opening of J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q Restaurant on Wednesday, spending Saturday traveling from Norman to Daytona Beach, Florida and back, was a unique way to end the week. “Unique” probably isn’t the word I’m looking for. How about “heartbreaking”? Knowing I had to get up at 3:30 a.m. to make a 6 a.m. departure meant little or no sleep Friday night. Even with two alarms set, it is hard for me to rest knowing that I could not miss the flight from OKC to Atlanta connecting into Daytona. As it was, I landed in Daytona at 12:20 p.m. and the services for Nancy and Daniel started at 1 p.m. I made it to the church with maybe 10 minutes to spare. But I did make it. It was the least I could do to show my respect for two people for which I cared a great deal. The media was strategically hovering outside the church to where one could not enter the facility under the normal, covered walkway during the heavy rain without walking by the reporters, who I realize have a job to do. They had questions with the first being something along the lines of “what about the steroid issue?” It wasn’t “what are your memories of Nancy and Daniel?” or “Is there anything you would like to say to the families?” It was the tired, “steroid” question. This entire tragedy is about much more than alleged steroid abuse, especially on this day that I will carry with me for the rest of my days. I guess it is another “one of those days” that can join the others already filed away, that I will never forget. Sitting on the Delta plane here’s what I was thinking on the way from Oklahoma to Florida. I am a grandfather of two beautiful, healthy granddaughters. I love those two babies with all my heart and soul. I mentally found myself in the shoes of Nancy’s folks. Not only did they lose their daughter but they also lost, as I understand it, their ONLY grandchild. Their ONLY grandchild. I can’t even fathom how I would handle such a tragedy. If you are reading this and have young children, how would you handle burying them? Perhaps some of you have unfortunately had to endure this challenge in your life. If so, you have my most sincere condolences. Parents are not supposed to bury their own children as has been said over time and memorial. But parents burying a grandchild at the same is beyond description. The service was reserved and classy. I loved the music. The structure of the service allowed for ample opportunities for one to reflect on the lives of Nancy and Daniel. Of course, Chris, too, crossed my mind during the service. How could he not? Daniel’s full name is Daniel Christopher Benoit and I read the little guy’s name over and over during the service. I thought of so many memories of the Benoit family especially at Wrestlemanias which has a “family reunion” feel for many of us who don’t see the talents’ spouses and their kids but a handful of times per year. I have literally seen Daniel grow up at Wrestlemania as Nancy would have the apple of her eye dressed to the “nines” in either a little tuxedo or a handsome suit. Indeed, Mom Nancy made her little boy a sharp dressed man. I loved it when they danced together! I can still close my eyes and hear the music and see their smiles. Today, I needed to see those smiles. Today I needed to feel those good memories. Hopefully today, Nancy’s family and many friends can start to “officially” heal. It’s time for all of us to heal as best we can and to attempt to move forward. Watching Nancy’s Mom, Dad and Sister leave the service was incredibly touching. I should be more eloquent but writing this isn’t easy. Saturday afternoon in Daytona, the media wanted to talk to me about “drugs” and the ills, perceived and real, of the wrestling business. Today was not the time. Today was a time of remembrance for the loved ones that have been lost and for paying our respect to a devastated family. The wrestling business, like our lives, is far from perfect and many areas of it need to be addressed and improved upon. Perhaps this mission should be approached as if tomorrow was our first day on the job and we have the chance to start fresh and make things better for everyone who wants to play by the rules and to do the right things so the business will continue to thrive long after guys like me are nothing more than a fleeting memory of bygone days. But Saturday, July 14 wasn’t about the business. It was about paying respect to a grieving family who need all the courage they can muster and all the prayers they can receive. Today. Please remember these folks in your prayers. Tomorrow will be here soon enough. J.R.

Dear JR!! I feel so speechless at this whole entire ordeal I know that things happen in this world for a reason and I also know there are many critics towards chris Benoit and about what he did, well I brainstormed this quite a bit and really we as a society shouldn't be so quick to judge anyone for that fact Chris Benoit will be judged by a much higher power then we can possibly imagine. In closing nobody really knows what happen and never will and there is only 3 people that know for sure and they are all gone today, May the Benoit Family rest in peace. I would also like to comment about what Jim Ross said about children are not suppose to die before there parents as I am a father of three beautiful young sons and could not possibly imagine what life for me would be like without them, God Bless

JR, Sorry it took me so long to read this, but your words were exactly what I (we all) needed to hear at this time. My humble heart goes out to Nancy's family as well as Chris' family, both families have suffered a great loss in this tragedy and the world has lost a great wrestler (hopefully still Hall of Fame bound). I still think about Chris and his family and it saddens my heart that this could not have turned out a different way. God Bless them for they are all in God's hands now. And God Bless you also JR for having the insight to say the right thing at the right time - you truly have a gift. Thank you.

J.R. Thank you very much for taking the time to write about your experience at the Nancy and Daniel's homegoing. The situation is already tragic enough to deal with so for you to take the time to write about it so that others may read is really generous of you. Thank you again, Take care.

Thank you so much for your update on the Benoit family Funnerals. Every place else I have looked has not had very much information on them. Please keep the website updated with Chris funneral since wwe will not have anything for it. RIP Nancy and Daniel Benoit My heart goes out to their familys, It is really hard to lose a child and his mother in a very bad way..my condolences.

Hey J.R, I am currently studying Film and Media in the oldest and most profound University in New Zealand and it is clearly made evident that the media in the US are twisting this story by bringing on "experts" to discredit the state of mind that Benoit was in and laying everything on "steroids!" I am an aspiring wrestler and will one day see you!Cant wait!

So here we are... I met you when I was a child. I want you to know my sister did think you were hilarious. You are right..she was always "one of the boys" and taught me to be the same way. Christophers name was not verbally mentioned but please believe it was in my heart. We were ridiculously close. How this all happened is lost on even us. I know this..through Nov to Jan we worked out twice a day together talking of everything from the President to Pat Tillman. I do NOT do media...ask my ex brother in law Kevin (with whom I still have a good relationship) S-T-E-P was a dirty word in our house and we never reffered to any of the other children that way. David Beniot and I are a very close and my heart aches for him every sceond. The fact unfortunately remains that these children will see college and marriage and my nephew will not see first grade. I look like Nancy, I think like Nancy and by God I will do what Nancy would have done...which is the right thing. She always did the right thing. Thanks JR for always giving Nance the time in the ring. Sandra

Dear Jim Ross(J.R.), Formost I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to Nancy and Daniel Benoit. I also wanted to summerize on what I thought about the two. Nancy from what I can remember you where a very beautiful and from what I heard Intelligent. I may of not known you but All I can say is GOD BLESS and hope to meet you someday. Daniel your time here was short but your memories you left behind will last a lifetime. GOD BLESS NANCY & DANIEL BENOIT. ALSO GOD PLEASE FORGIVE CHRIS BENOIT.\ Nate

all i can really say is that i am really sad about what has happened i dont condone what chris did but he must have had some brain damage or somthing you dont do headbutts of the top rope every week and not do yourself damage it is so out of caracter for him i hope the have found peace now in heaven , do we know when chris will be buried congrats on opening your restaurant J.R ang god bless you

All I can say is that I'm really sad about everything about the whole Benoit tradegy. I know up in Heaven God is taking care of Nancy and Daniel. Congrats in opening your restaurant J.R., and God bless you.

All I can say is that I'm really sad about everything about the whole Benoit tradegy. This show me that we all need to be thankful for every breath we take and cherish our love ones and tell them we love them. GOD is taking care of Nancy and Daniel. I can only say one thing... GOD forgive Chris.

I can't imagine as a friend what you are going through. Just know that my sympathy is with the family and friends. This is an awful, awful tragedy. God Bless and give you strenght to cope.

JR, I don't think anyone could have said this better. Your respect and love for those people shines from your words. Thank you.

RECENTLY I SAW A PICTURE OF UMAGA HOLDING A TNA BELT.THE ARTICLE ALSO SAID THAT KING BOOKER WAS IN ATTENDANCE.WHATS UP WITH THAT?

J.R., I understand that Marcus Cor Von missed his match last night on the ECW program and that he didn't even show up to the tapings. Is everything okay? Do we have cause yet to be concerned? I'm reminded of the last time that a wrestler missed an ECW match. We don't need any more wrestler deaths. Please, can you offer an update on Cor Von's whereabouts or status that will put my mind at ease?

What I find disturbing is the number of people who have been asking whether or not Chris Benoit should be inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame. The answer is NEVER! How about inducting someone who deserves to be in but has been widely ignored, like the late Owen Hart? Yes, the events are indeed shocking and tragic, but we must never forget that Chris Benoit murdered his wife and his own son, a child-and that overshadows everything he's accomplished.

JR, First, I would like to say while the Benoit situation is a tragedy that I can't possibly see as having any silver lining whatsoever I am hopeful that the recent toxicology report will clear the WWE. I think the WWE has taken a great deal of abuse from the media, here we are now discovering that - no surprise to me - Chris has NO STEROIDS in his system. As has been stated before, Roid Rage had nothing to do with this situation. My question is this, do you believe that there will be any possibility that the WWE will consider lifting the 'ban' on the use of Benoit's name or likeness in light of this discovery? Also, do you (like me) see this as a problem that the authorities don't seem to be interested in even the SLIGHTEST possibility that Chris didn't do this? I understand that it might be a stretch, but when you consider the lack of motive you have to wonder if someone else didn't have a better reason. Lastly, congratulations on the opening of your restaurant. If I ever happen to get down to your neck of the woods I'll be sure to stop in and pray at the 'Alter-o-Que' Jim

Hey JR, what do you think of khali being the champ? I think Kane gets harshly treated, surely its about time he had a run with the world title? Damn!

Throughout my life of watching wrestling, my favorites have always been Brett Hart and Chris Benoit. I am still in shock and understand how people can be upset or even angry at Chris. However I think it is wrong for any wrestling organization to "write-off" his career. He might be a murderer but he still deserves the respect for what he did for us fans while in that ring. The media attention to the drugs found is completely understandable. They are doing their jobs. Yes they should of been respectful but look at Mr. McMahon's disrespect to people who passed away with his awful "death" storyline. Either way, yes Chris is a murderer but his wrestling career should not be forgotten. Ever

J.R., kudos for the courage and honesty in sharing your feelings on something you weren't even obligated to talk about, which I know is not an easy thing in this circumstance. You have put this matter in perspective, and chosen your words very well - thanks for doing so. My condolences to you, and all affected by this horrible situation.

hi jr, i wish the media would have backed off at the funeral, they have no respect. thank you for sharing this with us, and i keep the family in my prayers. also quick question, i know your a john wayne fan, i am as well, i was wondering if you have seen the movies Hatari and Donovan's Reef? also in harms way. those are my favorites, i also like the cowboys and the green berets. hatari is my favorite, love all the animals .

J.R., you are very classy and a refreshing change from all of the negativity regarding the Benoit subject. I have a question for you. Is the Smackdown Championship Cursed. Batista relinqushes because of injury, Now Edge. Is that title a lemon, coming from ol turnerland?

Oh another question have you read Lance Storm comments on his site under the heading "enough already"? if so what are your thoughts on it and if not then you should check it out.

Hey JR When Chris Master was sent to rehab and returned he got made fun of on national TV by Triple H, Why?

Hey JR, how are you? Please stop this company from putting the World Heavyweight Title on the Great Khali. He's very undeserving and a sideshow freak. He's not a wrestler, he's a joke. He's proven nothing to anybody and I can't stand watching him. He's deserves absolutely no push; Umaga, Lashley, hell even Snitsky, deserve a push, not this clown. I hope in God's name that the most underappreciated man on the roster Kane gets the title at the Bash. He is way more deserving than Khali. I completely understand that Edge's injury was so unexpected and sudden and the WWE was rushing to do something, but don't put the title on Khali. What an absolute joke. Umaga is more deserving to be champion. You have to work your way to the top, like Edge and Kane. Kane hasn't been World Champion since 1997. Give him the title. Khali shouldn't even be on Smackdown. He shouldn't even be in the WWE. This is a disgrace. I'm not watching Khali. Andre and Big Show are agile and better wrestlers than this fool. take care Best of luck with the restaurant. I'll be ordering some BBQ sauce in the near future. Joe Aman

ITS JUST SO SAD TO SEE A FAMILY LIFE TAKEN AWAY LIKE THIS WE SHOULD ALL THINK ABOUT THIS FAMILY AND HOW COULD IT GET THAT BAD FOR WHAT HAS HAPPEN

Thank you so much for this update. With all of the media stuff there's no ACTUAL information going around about what is really happening. Thanks!

Certianly our hearts and our preyers go out to Nancy Daniel and their family, but for the media to ask questions like that during a funeral is just upserd! Huge story aside this is someones loved one that they have to say goodbye. When someone goes to a funeral they go to remember the good times and rejoyce in the memories of the departed, not to have to give comments on an alliged drug problem. Nancy and Daniel should have been given more respect then that. The Media's job should stop at the funural. I hear reporters that people are taking away that a mother and a son were taken so violently and why don't focus on the victims but when it come crunch-time they want to turn this into a platform to get comments on the current scandel and it just ain't right

How long is the WWE et al going to pretend that Chris Benoit, the wrestler, never existed? All of Benoit's merchandise has been discontinued from WWE Shopzone, all his matches have been taken off of WWE 24/7, his Superstar page has been removed from the WWE's website. The Hard Knocks DVD is in outrageous demand since the tragedy a few weeks ago. I'm not saying that the WWE should condone Chris's actions, far from it. But you can't change the fact that this is a man that people looked up to and admired, and there are people still that look up to what he was, and admire what he was. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: There is far more incentive to remember how the Benoits lived than how they died. Let's not try to erase history here. Pretending that he never was will not take away the reality of the situation; it will only draw resentment from the millions of fans who admire(d) him. Always respectfully, Raven

"This stinks Ross, it stinks" - Jesse Ventura hey Ross, Closure is definately tough to come by but even more difficult if you hadnt attended the services. Thanks for giving us an inside feel to the services. Onto wrestling.. I know the Powers of Pain dont have a shot at the HOF, but where would you rank those monsters (Warlord & Barbarian) as far as great tagteams of alltime? Wes St Cloud, MN

J.R., Beautiful entry. There's no need to say anything more because you echoed the sentiments of every wrestling fan out there. Yesterday, I was going through my old wrestling tapes and came across Over The Edge '99 and that made me think of a question. With all of the tragic events that have happened over the years in wrestling, what is the most difficult broadcast you have had to do?

Hey JR, I know the Benoit tragedy is a very sensitive issue for all people, especially those who knew him personally, but i was wondering does anyone in the company (including you) wish that you did not do the Benoit tribute show, I believe that Benoit was a great wrestler who sadly flipped out at the end of his life, All of the WWE knew him a lot better then us fans and you guys all thought that he was incredibly kind and nice. Even though he is at the heart of this tragedy, no one can disagree with the legacy he made and to ignore i don't believe is right either.

Why is Ric Flair not being pushed as the "Ironman" of professional wrestling. It may be another quality way to show a man who is so good and has/is doing so much, rather than newer or younger fans possibly seeing him as an "old guy".

classy JR I feel badly about the roid question since at this time it is not known if he was taking them at all I resent the medias coverage of this story as it is all based on little fact and more gossip not to mention an agenda to force steroids into it when these people know so little about wrestling I have been a fan since the late 70s and I was as shocked by this as anyone but that dosent mean all of a sudden pro wrestling is the new sacrificial lamb for the media like the duke lacrosse kids who were flat slandered and to my knowledge no filing a false police report has been filed as it should be dont worry JR some of us respect you

You know there are a lot of thing many people could say about this tragedy but I think you said it all the best straight from the heart. May the families get through this with all the strength God can give them and may all the ones involved never be forgotten.

Check out Lance Storm's new commentary "Enough Already" on his site www.stormwrestling.com I was a little confused as to his point and felt he was really taking a stab at the business he once loved. I know the business has a lot of kinks but also felt like you guys have come a helluva long way. I respect Lance a lot and am not implying that you 'sum up' his view, but I would appreciate your thoughts/interpretation of what you think he means.

my love goes out to nancy's family and chris family i know how it is to lose a love one. chris will alright be in my heart.something had to be really bad but, i just don't believe what the news is saying.love chris.nancy and daniel forever may they reat in god's hand's.

Hey JR! Who would be your top three wrestlers (or retired wrestlers)who you think may have the best chance at unionizing the business or gaining some benefits? Not that I'm a Union guy, if you can't talk to your boss and get something resolved what makes you think that going through an arbitrater will solve anything? Anyway, who could help to establish some benefits? 1) Bret Hart: Has tremendous respect in and out of the business. No longer an active wrestler and is very articulate. Has nothing to lose yet is still very respectful and has years of experience plus years out of the business to see the long term effects. 2) Mick Foley: Can get some main stream attention and political help. Also very respected by all levels of talent. 3) Mark Calloway: Has all the pull with the boys in the back. Can you imagine anybody saying "No" to him in a closed locker room meeting? I think they would take a second thought about things. Especially since he is on the back part of his career, maybe he sees things a little different? I don't know what kind of benefits, perhaps health and dental and a pension fund? What you put in you get that back and a little upside? Just curious to your posistion. Nick Sharp

First off greetings from Corpus Christi, Texas. Why is it, that the vultures we call news stations only report in depth on wrestling(Sports Entertainment), when a tragedy strikes? With the amount of coverage that this tragic event had got, you think that the media would have educated themselves instead of grasping at straws, or was this just a quick way to voice their one-sided opinions? Now I must ask, how is the Sooners team shaping up this year? Can I see another Sooner stomping of the longhorns? Finally, were you able to visit any places during your time here in Corpus Christi and when can we see the WWE back down here?

Dear J.R., I have been a fan of wrestling for roughly twenty one years. I would have to say that Benoit was my all time favorite. It is hard for me as a fan to fathom all of this, much less, how you and all who knew him could possibly piece any of this into some logical picture. I will always remember him holding up the title at Wrestlemania. I appreciate you sharing this with us, as it was probably extremely tough for you to write it. God Bless

I may get flamed for this but I do believe that God will watch over Chris,Nancy and Daniel.I think that even if it did happen the way they say it did, he will forgive.I dont blame steroids but I am very happy that they are trying to regulate or do SOMETHING.Even if it is choices that they make hopefully now we can do more to help wrestlers and give back some caring in exchange for the years of entertainment. I am not proud of it but I got hooked by a doctor how carelessly prescribed me painkillers for over 5 years and didnt care enough to look at the fact over time I needed more and more and they were given with no question. When I entered rehab for it I was let go from her practice when the insurance company looked to see just my case and how it was mismanaged.I know how easy it is to get hooked and I dont wrestle.I know there was help for me and insurance to help it.There were people in place to recognize the problem and act on it.I just want the same for wrestlers. Not saying anyone made them that way or forced them to.Wrestlers are not given the same respect and caring in society. How can a nobody like me be recognized with a problem, yet a man who throws his body around and is visible is not recognized or offered help, unless it is offered by WWE and by then its too late.I hope now it will be regulated and not just Vinces job to offer help.Just my opinion and I hope it offends no one. My prayers are with all of you.Anyone who has ever loved wrestling is grieving with you. Those who have ever loved wrestling are trying to say enough.

I am putting money on Randy beating Dusty with Cody betraying his father

Dear JR. Thank you for the update I was wondering about the family who I think about and the tragedy they have indured. They have and will be in my prayers. Reading your article you wrote, it brought tears to my eyes and you can read the compassion you had for the family. My prayers go out for the families and to all of you at the WWE. You will never begin to understand the enjoyment I get watching Raw and Smackdown and I do believe that you all give 200% when your putting on a show. I don't want to loose another superstar. So please if this tragedy does teach us anything is that you are all people with real lives and with personal problems and sometimes I think us that watch you all on tv tend to forget that. Thanks again for the update on the family "GOD" bless Nancy, Daniel and their families. Also "GOD" bless you and all the superstars of Raw and Smackdown. Please, please, please take care of yourselves Teressa Allen

thank you for your respectful and thoughtful words on the Benoit tragety I followed you through wcw and wwe you are the constant professional if I ever make it to Oklahoma I will stop at your restraunt.

Very touching blog JR and it was easy to tell just from reading how sincere and yet hard to write it was. My thoughts, prayers and love go out to all connected to these tragedies. Take care JR x

I hope all of the Benoit's are in peace...Chris, Nancy & Daniel. It's difficult to think of Chris as this bad person, but no one will know what exactly happened or what mindset he had. I hope people will remember Chis as a good wrestler & entertainer. I don't think wiping him from WWE history completely is the way to go with the healing process. I also hope the otehr wrestlers in the WWE family are coming to grips with things better involving this case. As for the reporters, they are doing their job. Maybe hanging outside of the funeral/church was not the way to go that day, but if their is a problem in wrestling this may help.

Thank you JR for you warm caring thoughtful yet thought provoking words that express the thoughts of most of us that are on the outside of the ring looking in......... My prayers are with all of those affected by this tragic event.

Also, is it true that Benoit was booked to win the ECW title at vengence? Because I can't imagine that middle-carder John Hennigan getting booked win it when Benoit would lose it to Phil Brooks. Fact is it is sad that that heat-heart throb could pull off main event status on his own. The next OVW World Heavyweight Champion, Kaiza,

We wrestling fans in The Netherlands are also saddened by the deaths of the Benoit family. We can't watch wrestling in the Netherlands because the networks choose not to broadcast it. We have to download the shows so there is a positive thing about the internet. We hope that the future brings wrestling back in The Netherlands.

I like many of my friends have found it difficult to come to terms with what has happened. I am dissappointed that the media even here in the UK has joined the Steriod bandwagon. However i hope that Vince McMahon, the WWE and The wrestling world as a whole will be allowed a little more breathing space from the media once the toxic reports come bk in a week or so. I just hope that the WWE continues to do what it does best and that is to entertain beyond parrallel. Finally my thoughts go to the Nancy's and Chris's families who must be finding it difficult through this traumatic time.

JR, Thankx for the competent comments on your website, always appreciated. Got a non-wrestling question for you, what is the basis for your dislike of Nebraska's head coach Bill Callahan? Granted there will never be another Tom Osborne, just like there will never be another Barry Switzer, but c'mon, Frank Solich, I loved the guy, but he just wasn't quite up to the task of running a big time Div. I football program. Callahan definetly has his faults, however from what I can tell he has tried to ingrain himself and his program into the great tradition of HuskerNation, it seems as if a majority of the negativity surronding Coach C. comes from those who still hold on to the past and wish for the days of the old Big 8, much like wrestling, times change and people must change with them or get left behind. I truly hope and believe that Coach C. is laying the foundation of bringing NU back to where it should be, whether or not he gets to finish it is not up to me, however I feel that he has done a pretty good job for the amount of time that he has been there. Thanks for your response in advance.
