Man, what a busy week! Lots of things going on in the world of wrestling and at J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q in Norman. With this being the first college football weekend in Norman for the Oklahoma Sooners, things are buzzing around here. Plus, I am leaving EARLY Sunday morning for Columbus, Ohio to tape Monday Night Raw so hectic times are upon us. No worries on my end, as I wouldn’t have it any other way. “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop” someone once said.
Feed me back some Bar-B-Q time:
It is hard to tell if Ventura will ever get back into any form of broadcasting, but one would assume if the right offer came along he would consider it. I miss the old Boston Garden for sure. I had some great times there with the late Gorilla Monsoon.
Dan W.- Funniest guys in the locker room?? That could be a long list, but JBL, Dean Malenko, and The King would be on the list. (more…)
Greetings from under the black, 200X Resistol hat from your resident Oklahoma Sooner football fan and barbecue lover, who is going to experience plenty of both this week, as the college football season kicks off and WWE prepares to produce Monday Night Raw at a rare Sunday event in another college football hotbed, Columbus, Ohio.
Oklahoma hosts North Texas, “Stone Cold’s” alma mater, Saturday night, but the Texas Rattlesnake has other obligations and can’t make the game. The Sooners are favored by around 40 points or so, which I find excessive. Steve has become a quasi-OU fan, and will be in Norman, Okla., for at least one game this fall, for those of you keeping score at home. Plus, the star of The Condemned, which is out on DVD September 18, loves our COLD beverages.

It’s good to be back home in Oklahoma after three busy days in the Northeast, that included SummerSlam in New Jersey, Raw in Boston, and little sleep due to travel, not recreation, unfortunately. Anyone who wins a “safe driver” award in Jersey, New York, Connecticut, etc need to be recognized. King and I were in more “near misses” than I care to discuss, on our drive from the Meadowlands to Boston on Monday. Never a dull moment when we travel together, that’s for sure.
We got a fair amount of feedback about the rumor that King and I will be split up in the near future. I can only say that no one has spoken to me about it, whatsoever, and I seriously doubt the validity of the rumor.
Big week for us at J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q with this being our first “game week” of the college football season as Oklahoma hosts North Texas this Saturday night at 6 p.m. Central Time for a game that will be televised by Fox Sports. Our place will be open late after the game Saturday evening and then I fly early Sunday morning from OKC to Dallas then to Columbus, Ohio where Monday Night Raw will be produced live to tape Sunday night. Greetings from under the 200X, black Resistol hat from soggy Oklahoma where the barbecue at J.R.’s is smoking, pigskins are in the air, and the Biggest Party of the Summer, SummerSlam, is just days away.
It was an interesting trip to North Carolina last week for yours truly. On the way to Fayetteville from Raleigh, my rental car overheated just a few minutes after the air conditioning went limber tail on me – on a day where temperatures were more than 100 degrees. So, about 30 miles east of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, I had to turn around and go back to the rental car place at the airport. When I got there, I had to get back in a nice, long rental car line and trade my rental car in for another one – one with AC and no check engine light on. From there, I restarted my 80-mile or so journey back to Fayetteville. Because I was running late, I missed getting to have lunch at the famous BBQ Shack in Fayetteville, which came highly recommended by native North Carolinian, current Oklahoma University offensive coordinator and my neighbor, Kevin Wilson. I withstood the rental car woes OK, but missing my visit to Fayetteville, North Carolina’s famous BBQ Shack just wasn’t fair.

It’s great to be back in soggy Oklahoma from my brief, but enjoyable trip to North Carolina, flying into Raleigh and driving to Fayetteville. This trip was supposed to be fun, and in a large part it was, but my Raw road trips are not the same without King, who is the “wheel man” and handles renting the vehicles. My rental overheated and the AC wouldn’t work, so on the way to Fayetteville I had to turn around and go back to the RDU Airport and exchange the car, which is always fun getting to stand in line, again, and then having to explain to quasi brain dead people why, again, I was returning the car after only a few hours. It was over 100 degrees in the Carolinas on Monday and having no AC and a car that was over heating was a bad combination, as I felt like I was sweating “fried chicken.” I had planned to eat lunch at the BBQ Shack in Fayetteville, but my transportation woes prevented that, which was a bummer. I can’t say as Booker T. (no “king” Booker reference here) brightened my evening, but Booker may experience some less than positive moments come SummerSlam this Sunday on PPV against HHH. Wouldn’t that be a shame? Nonetheless, SummerSlam looks really solid on paper and with a huge, sell out crowd on hand this Sunday the atmosphere should motivate everyone involved with the process. I am looking forward to Sunday, I can assure you.
I leave again this Saturday for the personal appearance/autograph signing I have committed to attending this Saturday night in Union, New Jersey at Amazing Heroes which is located at 966 Stuyvesant Avenue in Union. Their website is www.amazingheroes.com and their telephone number for more info is 908-687-4338. I will be at Amazing Heroes from 6-8 p.m. and hope to see you there if you live or will be in the area. (more…)
Business is about to pick up and J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q is doing amazingly well and we are so grateful and thankful for the business. I love being involved with our own, original concept and meeting so many great fans and guests of our place.
Just this week I met some really nice folks who had actually driven from Massachusetts and New York to Oklahoma and included J.R.’s on their summer car trips/vacations. How cool is that?
Speaking of fans and meeting them, I will be making a somewhat rare personal appearance, signing autographs, etc on Saturday August 25, the night before SummerSlam, from 6-8 p.m. at Amazing Heroes located at 966 Stuyvesant Avenue in Union, New Jersey. For more info you can call them at 908-687-4338. It would be great to see you there if you are in the area or are attending SummerSlam.
Football season is here, well almost, and I have been attending some OU Sooner practices and scrimmages, many of which are closed to the public and the media. Being around the OU football program is cathartic to me and I feed off the energy of the players and the best coaching staff in the U.S.A. Plus, several of the coaches have become fans and followers of the WWE since we have all gotten to know each other. Ric Flair and Steve Austin have even come to Norman and have spoken to the team over the years. Steve will be back in Oklahoma on September 22 at the Oklahoma State Fair to host the huge Monster Truck Show at the State Fair Grandstands. One never knows, but the Texas Rattlesnake might even be a guest at J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q earlier in the day on Saturday, September 22. No guarantees but one never knows who one will see dining at J.R.’s on any given day.
I also know that Stone Cold has become a Sooner football fan and is one of the staff’s favorite guys to have around. Steve will be attending a Sooner home game with yours truly and family sometime in the 2007 season. Considering we will be taking our Bar-B-Q Trailer to Dallas for the OU-Texas game, I might even convince Austin to join our crew in Big D for a fun weekend at the Texas State Fair and the annual Red River Rivalry. Greetings from Soonerland from a BBQ lovin’ OU fan who enjoyed watching the Sooner scrimmage on Wednesday night.
Even in the oppressive heat, the Oklahoma football team had a spirited scrimmage on Wednesday that saw both the offense and the defense have their “moments”.
From my perspective, all three QB’s — Sam Bradford, Joey Halzle and Keith Nichol, who are vying for the starting job — seemed to all receive equal work or very close to it. The three signal callers each did some good things, made some plays and threw the ball well. But, strictly from a casual observer’s opinion, it seemed that Sam Bradford looked to be the most comfortable of the trio of signal callers. I stress the term “casual observer”. Bradford just seems to have the most “presence” of the three QB’s at this time and at 6’5”, Sam can see the field well, seems to make more good decisions than bad ones and can definitely throw the ball.

Greetings from under the black, 200X Resistol hat from your resident barbeque lovin’ Okie, as we begin the serious countdown for SummerSlam, which is just about a week away. And I’m breathing a sigh of relief that Mr. McMahon cannot mathematically be my father. Whew.
From our crack staff who reside in or near “Parts Unknown,” “The Black Hole”, and, even a handful on “The Dark Side,” we have contacted John Wayne, John Tenta, John Ayres, John Studd, John B. Layfield, Johnny Rougeau, Johnny Mae Young, Johnny Rodz, Johnny Ace, and John “The Three Legged Man” to select this week’s coveted and highly anticipated Monday Night Raw Superstar of the Week. The voting was angry that day my friends – like an old man sending back soup at a deli. Angry, I tell you! But a decision has been made as this week’s Raw Superstar of the Week is Cody Rhodes … if you will.

Thanks for checking our site and for all the feedback. The Bar-B-Q is slow smoking so let’s get to your comments.
Tom W.- The Bret Hart ship has sailed in my opinion and I would be shocked to see him back on WWE TV for any thing other than a special occasion, but not on a regular basis. Perhaps when Bret’s much anticipated book is released, the Hitman “may” make an appearance to promote his book but I am not holding my breath on that one either. Nonetheless, I am anxious to read Bret’s book.
Dawn- It is nice to hear from a responsible parent who monitors what her young children watch and is simply “paying attention.”
Daniel C- an Australian Wrestlemania certainly isn’t far fetched, nor is a ‘Mania in the UK. Unfortunately, I am not involved in that area of the business, but with the WWE becoming more and more of a global brand, promoting a Wrestlemania outside North American is becoming more of a likelihood. I can only suggest you remain patient. (more…)
Dewey Robertson who gained his greatest notoriety and success as the character known as the Missing Link died of cancer early this morning.
I first met Dewey in the 1970’s when he came to work for LeRoy McGuirk’s Championship Wrestling territory based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was simply billed as Dewey Robertson in those days and was positioned to be one of the top fan favorites in the territory but for whatever reason he never really got to the level that was desired.
I can recall working as a referee for a series of matches with Dewey and Bruiser Bob Sweetan, the territory’s top villian at the time, that featured matches going to a 30 minute draw in week one, a 60 minute draw in week two, and a 90 minute draw in week 3. This match occurred in many markets in the territory in an attempt to establish Dewey as the top fan favorite by going toe to toe with the area’s baddest man in Sweetan, another native Canadian.
