Dewey “The Missing Link” Robertson Dies

Posted in:
Dewey Robertson who gained his greatest notoriety and success as the character known as the Missing Link died of cancer early this morning. I first met Dewey in the 1970’s when he came to work for LeRoy McGuirk’s Championship Wrestling territory based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was simply billed as Dewey Robertson in those days and was positioned to be one of the top fan favorites in the territory but for whatever reason he never really got to the level that was desired. I can recall working as a referee for a series of matches with Dewey and Bruiser Bob Sweetan, the territory’s top villian at the time, that featured matches going to a 30 minute draw in week one, a 60 minute draw in week two, and a 90 minute draw in week 3. This match occurred in many markets in the territory in an attempt to establish Dewey as the top fan favorite by going toe to toe with the area’s baddest man in Sweetan, another native Canadian. Dewey was an excellent athlete who stayed in great physical condition and had sound fundamental skills. However, it was when Robertson donned the face paint and became the Missing Link that he truly found his niche. “The Link” had a nice run with Dark Journey as his valet for a time and he seemed to get his best exposure when matchmaker Ken Mantell was calling the shots. The Missing Link became an extremely popular “character” that did not have to do promos which was never Dewey’s forte. Dewey, himself, was a character and was always ready to socialize with a beverage or two and I remember that he traveled a great deal with his wife who, if I remember correctly, “managed” The Missing Link for a time as well. Dewey also lived in a nudist colony at one point in his life which was the cause for some funny stories, as folklore would have it. I can vividly remember Dewey talking to me about the NHL and hockey in general as the native Canadian was a fan of that game. He introduced himself to me as “James John Byron Dewey Robertson” and was proud to tell anyone that he was from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I learned a great deal about our Canadian neighbors and certainly about hockey from Dewey. For those of us that knew Dewey, he will certainly be missed and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Perhaps there is solace in that Dewey is now cancer free, is without pain, and in a much better place to spend eternity. Please say a prayer for the Robertson family if you are so inclined. Rest in Peace Dewey. J.R.

I remember The Missing Link from years ago on World Class Championship Wrestling and he was without a doubt one of my favorites. May he forever rest in peace and may God bless the entire family.
I still remember seeing The Missing Link, at the Dallas Sportatorium and asking another fan if he was really as deranged as he appeared to be. She told me that that was "just his character," and I saw a picture or him, in a bar, conversing with another wrestler over a beer. I just wish cancer hadn't taken him. I don't like that diseawe (it's all over my family) and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
God Bless Him and R.I.P.!
Dear JR I am a fan of HHH but I think that ever since his divorce from Steph he has been held down in WWE. I was wondering whether or not his contract is up and if we could see HHH in Japan or Mexico? It would be a wise move in my opinion because he could get away with his "juiced up" look in a foreign country with no Congress snipping at your heels. Don't get me wrong I don't know HHH personally, so I therefore don't know if he is "juicing" or not ... I merely said he had a "juiced up" look. Hec
Dear Jim Ross, What do you think of the King of Kings aka, Triple H, HHH, Terra Ryzing, Jean Paul Levesque going to TNA once his current contract expires? I think it would be a good move - he could be in a position to call his own shots and not be just another guy on the roster like he is in the WWE! Thanx in advance for your reply! Bert
hello, i just wanted to give my thanks for a chance to meet you Mister Ross at your resturant last night in Norman, Ok. The food was to great and the envionment was excellent. it was very busy last night and so i sat at the bar and still was able to get my food in about 5 min. The employee that was working the bar was excellent and to have him call me by name was showing a great aspect of personal service. His name was James and he made me feel at home and in California you do not get much of that. next time i come back to Oklahoma for training i will again be sure to stop in. thank you again!
Mr. Robertson certainly did his job well. I used to have legit nightmares about the Missing Link when I was a kid.
I believe Bobby Heenan was his manager in his stint in the WWE in the mid/late 80s, but that was the only occasion I have ever heard of the Missing Link. It was a neat article in a wrestling magazine I read roughly seven years ago. I'd like to pay my respect to him and other wrestlers that had passed recently, like Brian 'Crush' Adams.
I think Missing Link would make a very well deserved inductee into the WWE Hall Of Fame him and Bruiser Brody we're two of the scariest and most intimidating heels of all time and we're great to watch in the ring aswell.
hey JR, its an honor to have my comment answered by you. but my comment is does jerry "the king" lawler has a website that sells his shirts? they look really nice and i want 1 badly!
Man,The Missing Link AND Bronco Lubich? I remember them from WCCW.I will miss them.Oh and Crush died too.
I was sad to hear the Missing Link had passed away. He was always one of my favorite wrestlers in WCCW and the UWF. Also I don't know if you saw but Bronco Lubich also passed away over the weekend. I never saw him wrestle but watched many matches that he refed in WCCW. Rest in Peace Dewey and Bronco.
Are Outback Jack, Don Kent and Bobby Heffernan related or at least best friends. They are after all from Australia.
The one person that definately deserves to be in next years WWE hall of fame is Abdullah the Butcher. Recently I seen him at a local rasslin show in Oshawa Ontario and he said he was somethingl like 69 or 70 years old. Could that truly be possible? Even though he never wrestled for the WWE he should be inducted for the mere fact that hes been wrestling continuously for over 40 years. That has to be a pro wrestling record as I don't know any one else that could possibly wrestle at nearly 70 yrs of age. Its only fitting that he and Dewey get in the next hall of fame. What do you think?
My grampa wanted to know what ever happened to NWA world junior heavyweight champion Nelson Royal. I think he lives on a ranch some where is North Carolina. Were you a big fan or friend of his? Also my aunt was curious what ever came of Tex McKenzie. He was one of the most exciting wrestlers of the sport many years ago. He stood 6 foot 9 and was lean and lanky if I remember. Thanks Jim Ross keep up the great work. We read you blogs all the time. Cameron
Gee...I wonder if that leech Marc Mero will use this as an opportunity to blame another death on Vince on the cable "news" shows. Seriously, though... I wish for comfort and peace for the family. Rest in peace, Dewey.
What ever happened too Lord Layton. He had a following that was second to none. As a commentator of play by play his delivery and style have yet to be equaled except by yours truly JR.
Terrible news, I too am from Hamilton Ontario Canada and I met Dewie 1n the mid 90s when he came to our school to talk about the dangers of drug use. Just a few years ago while working out at a local gym called Family Fitness I was surprised to see Dewey just a few feet away from me lifting about 3 times the weight I was. I soon realised he was a member of the gym and I would see him several times a week, I never bothered him for an autograph and just let him do his thing but i thought it was really cool. I often overheard him talking about hockey which he was obviously as you said a big fan of. The man was still in amazing shape for his age, he was lifting as much or more then anyone else which was very impressive. RIP Dewey
I'm so sorry JR. I know it never gets easy to say goodbye to a friend. I don't know how people could make it through life and all the hardships it can bring without faith.
My thoughts and prayers are with Dewey's family. I hope he rests in peace. Dee
He will be missed. Truly one of kind. God Bless Him, Chad
J.R.,as it so happens "The Missing Link" is featured in a match this month on "WWE 24/7" fromm the old Boston Garden.R.I.P. Dewey.
Thanks for the great blog on Dewey. It got me thinking, what ever happened to Bob Sweetan?
JR: Sad to hear of Dewey's passing.I remember the Link well and he will be sorely missed.I had fun watching him pummel his victims in the ring over the years! I liked him! May His Legacy Live on in our hearts. Thanks J.R,my friend!
I loved Watching the Missing link... RIP Mr Robertson... thanks for the memories
Greetings from New Jersey, First off, thank you very much for taking time out of your (I'm sure) very busy day to feed the appetite of internet fans and in some cases, setting the record straight on some bogus rumors floating around. Now that thats out of the way, I wanted to ask you your thoughts on 2 different folks: Elvis Pea**** & Jeremy Shockey. Have you ever met either? Thanks in advance, Dan from Jersey
Hey there JR,I have been a restling fan for over 40years.I saw Dewey before he was the Missing Link and when he became the Missing Link.I saw him restle in Kansas City.He will be greatly missed. Will be down soon to eat some of that wonderful BBQ
I never got the opportunity to see him perform, but had heard about him before. RIP
RIP Dewey Robertson. You will be missed.
Hey JR, My friend and I have tickets for Survivor Series in Miami, we're from Dublin, Ireland and we've only ever seen visiting house shows, what kind of experience can we expect in the days building up to Survivor Series and on the day of the event? Thanks, Adam
Damn J.R. that is ironic cause I asked you what he was upto not even 2 weeks ago! R.I.P. Link and on a better note I visited the restaurant last Friday and ran into future head coach Brent Venables and he was great, didnt get to talk to you because you was entertaining Brent (understandably so), but I had the Slobber Knocker which I couldnt finish (which says alot) but damn good. Plan on seeing you next time!
My condolences to the Robertson family... Dewey was one of the most unique characters in wrestling. Period. He should be remembered as a great tactician as well and carried many a match. A versatile wrestler who evoked emotion as a heel or face, something that seperates great wrestlers from good ones.
First off, I hope I am posting this in the correct venue. I would also just like to commend you, J.R., on your interaction with the fans - which I find truely marvelous. And I can't wait to travel to your family Bar-B-Q some day as I'm sure your good passion reflects in it's quality. Here is the question I'm asking (forgive me): I realize an appearance from the Hulkster is difficult to predict, especially nowadays where he is still getting older. I am aware of the fact that there has never been a "steel cage" match in Wrestlemania history (very interesting, albeit understandable.) I can't help but wonder about my personal dream match, and not whether or not it will ever happen, but more what reasons would prevent it. Dude Love vs. Hulk Hogan (red and yellow) - steel cage, Wrestlemania. How unwilling would Hogan be, do you think, to lay down to Foley? Would something like that be about something more than just a paycheck? And also, how unwilling would Foley be to work with Hogan? How unwilling would Foley be to put on the Dude Love trunks again? Not trying to be silly. Just trying to generate a response.
Damn shame to loose a great wrestler like Dewey. I will never forget him when he was first " Max, the Missing Link " in the old Mid South. But it was great to see him resurface in the UWF as a fan favorite and what better ring music to come out to than Quiet Riots's " BANG YOUR HEAD ". Thank you Link, Rest in peace!
The Missing Link will certainly be missed. A true legend in our sport. My prayers and heartfelt condolences to both friends and family who are personally affected by his passing.
I bought the Missing Link's book and it is quite the read. As J.R. said, he wasn't the interview type but still found a fair amount of success. He details his "personal demons" over the years. These played a huge part in his leaving the WWF after just a year. According to the Link, he lost just one or two matches during his WWF run, a pretty impressive record considering the time he competed. He claims to have left the WWF on his own terms to go back to the WCCW, which was in a serious decline at the time. Shortly afterwards, he explored the idea of creating a Missing Link amusement park, and no, I'm not making this up. That being said, he was hugely popular at the time as evidenced by his big spread in Sports Illustrated. Hogan may have been on the cover but the biggest picture inside was of the Missing Link, who wasn't even in the WWF at the time (but was shortly after the SI article).
I remember watching many of the Missing Link's matches while he was in the Mid-South area. I have some great memories of my friends and I wrestling in my backyard, and one of us would always climb up on a chair, grab the back of their heads and leap down just like the Missing Link was famous for doing.
I heard he had cancer. I hope he didn't suffer for to long.
