Some Fans Want “Passionless” J.R. To “Hang ‘Em Up”..

Posted in:
We received three particularly interesting comments over the past few days that our webmaster decided not to include here, which was his call that I don’t disagree with, but that I would like to address. The first one was from Spyros who posted a comment at 4:13 a.m. on November 24 who said, “As a long time WWE fan I feel compelled to say that your commentating is not as good nowadays as before.I believe you have lost your passion.” Spyros was also disappointed in my reaction to Jericho’s return. Mike wrote, “What is wrong with you? Lately you have become a company stooge. This site used to be fine where you told things as you saw.” And finally, Brian wrote “Are you getting too old to color the matches? You completely let out that the olympic runner was going to get laid out before it happened. Maybe time to hand up the boots/mic?” No issues here with any one expressing their opinion of my work or our site. I have had much worse said about my broadcast skills, or lack thereof, and our website is still a work in progress that will continue to get better and better. I can assure Spyros that I have not lost my passion for the business. I also believe that one’s passion must also match the moment and some moments are not passion worthy….”the new phone books are here…the new phone books are here”. I would like to believe that when the time is right that the appropriate “passion” is demonstrated by yours truly. The other option is that I could yell and scream for two hours which is akin to crying wolf and then people start to mentally tune one out. So Spyros, I appreciate your opinion but losing my passion is not an issue I promise you. I will screw up from time to time but it won’t be because of a lack of effort or “passion”. Mike says that I am a company “stooge”. Mike, is that as in “Shemp” or are you flaunting your “insider knowledge” by calling yours truly a stooge? Perhaps one should use some common sense in this instance. I feel I have been honest on the issues I have addressed here, but there are some issues I do not choose to address. That is my choice Mike. Just as it is your choice to visit this site or not. For example, I do not feel the need to continue to discuss the disgusting Benoit tragedy in depth. I do not feel compelled to damn all the WWE creative even though there are, at times, elements of creative that are personally not my cup of tea. Mike, if you want a web site to damn the WWE essentially from start to finish then there are many alternatives for you to explore. I will continue to express my feelings as I see fit on this site and if you feel turned off by me being an alleged “stooge”, as you described, then simply don’t visit us. We hate to lose you but one should not engage in any thing that is of a personal choice, such as this, that one doesn’t enjoy. Brian-I am not sure what me “coloring” the matches actually means nor am I aware of the Olympic Runner issue you described as I recall not saying anything of significance when the runner entered the arena. Nonetheless, I don’t feel as if I am “too old” to handle the job but your opinion is what it is and I respect it. I do make mistakes, just as most humans do and I even called Jeff Hardy’s “Whisper in the Wind” a “Twist of Fate” not once but twice in the past two weeks. That is a mental block on my part and I need to better concentrate on that specific matter whenever Jeff wrestles. Is is grounds for dismissal or retirement? Hopefully not. What I do as announcer on Monday night is not easy. Our show is totally live and we work without a net and sometimes I make mistakes. I often times have said things that I wish I could retrieve and start over but that’s not how it works. Plus, the company establishes the direction that they want the commentary to travel which means we are not in “business for ourselves” which becomes another subjective matter one could argue. The same writer who brought up the Jeff Hardy mistakes I made loved the “drama” of the Flair-Orton match on Raw from Charlotte but neglected to mention that the commentary just may have added to the “drama” of the moment. If one doesn’t believe that to be true, then watch the match again with the sound muted. If broadcasters are doing their jobs then their efforts should enhance a match. There have been matches over the years that I have witnessed that even a great call wouldn’t salvage. I am also sure that there were some good matches that one could have made great with a different approach or a different slant on the story being told. I am sure I am guilty of both. An argument could be made that perhaps the broadcast efforts of the team of “J.R. and The King” are simply taken for granted by some people. After all these years of sitting at ringside and doing our best to entertain the fans and viewers perhaps our efforts are simply an after thought by some. If so, then so be it. It will not adversely affect our show prep or our efforts to do our very best each and every Monday night for as long as the current Raw broadcast team is still together which I hope is for years to come. As I have said many times, when I think I can’t get it done any more I will want to get out of the biz and get out quickly. I won’t let the door hit me in the ass on the way out! The legacy that I have attempted to establish over the past 30+ years is extremely important to me. I don’t want to be remembered as a guy who “used to be a pretty good announcer.” The WWE has 4 strong broadcast teams and each brings something unique and exclusive to the table. However, I will put the work of the Raw broadcast team up against any of the other teams in the WWE or any where else for that matter. That is not a statement made out of disrespect but simply a confident, matter of fact. However, at the end of the day the fans have the final say on what they like or they don’t like. Even though I don’t personally agree with Spyros, Mike, or Brian, I have acknowledged their opinions and the fact that they are fans of wrestling….just like me. J.R.

I remember when u were sidelined JR,&the commentary duties were handed over to Coachman.I almost stopped watchin wrestling altogether.I think Raw would suck if the commentary was handed over to any other team besides u & the King.I find myself when watching pay per views wishing that u tweo were calling all the matches.
Mr. Ross: First, I must admit that I do not enjoy wrestling as much as I used to before it became soap-opera like. That said I must add that I do watch because of you and "The King". Not just because of the matches but because of how you handle the commentary. Ignore the comments from the idiots and continue to do what you do best.
JR, I am a big fan of your broadcast work, very entertaining and top quality. (Kudos to Lawler aswell) You are as good as commentary will ever get! Thankyou for your efforts, please don’t EVER retire. -adam
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN "FILE UNDER INSIDER" I would like to start off by addressing the so called "insiders" of wrestling who have no buisness calling themselves that. First and foremost u are an embarassment to me and all other fans who enjoy wrestling for what it is which is athletic entertainment. Your constant diatribes (now stay with me insiders that is a big word for you guys) which are amusing yet have no basis of fact except that u read them on the same sites i read have no grounds to be on a site where a real "insider" actually takes the time to let us in on some of the inner workings of a buisness for years was secretive and mysterious, which to me added to my love for the sport which yes i still call a sport and fueled my desire to learn more. As a true fan of any sport i relish the chance to learn everything i can about its performers and buissness dealings. I do not at anytime think u should be giving out opinions about fact or fiction u read on someone elses site and post them all over the net to make yourself seem "smart" I myself could discuss wrestling in detail with the best of them yet i truly know i know nothing compared to those who have been in the industry. That being said i think most wrestling fans are generally the most knowladgeable fans and respectful fans inj the world yet a select few mess it up for the rest of us. In closing to all the good fans i say keep on truckin baby and to all the idiot wannabe "insidfer" fans get a life a girlfriend a hobby or all of the above and stop making the rest of us look dumb. In closing sorry for the spelling and tone i just had to put my 2 cents worth in.
Some Fans Want “Passionless” J.R. To “Hang ‘Em Up”... I don't know what I would do without the voice of "Good old J.R." calling the matches. You and the "King" are the voice of RAW. I have listened to RAW when you had alternates on, and I tuned out and messed with my computer. You probably don't need an "Ata-boy" but...ATA-BOY! You guys are probably the best annouce team on RAW and will be sorely missed when you choose to "hang'em up."
Hi JR! Wow, you are such a legend and the comments made by those particular people u mentioned is so disrespectful to you. After all these years that I have been watching WWE you were there and you have remained an awesome commentator! Jerry Lawler also! I would also like to point out that I think the pairing of Tazz and Styles is better than when Tazz was paired with Cole. Michael Cole is also really good, and the team of him and JBL is a unique combination to say the least! Keep up the good work guys!
Greetings from under the dirty blonde mane! First off, Im going to echo the statements previously made, by saying TO HELL with the doubters! The moment dictates the passion, and so SORRY to the haters that you don't orgasm over of wrist lock, but I think its safe to say as a H.O.F you know whatcha doin', yeah! Second order of business is, I would like to personally offer my sincerest thanks on behalf of the entire Krisso clan, for the giftbucket which arrived today. I can honestly say without batting an eyelid, that ALL of your sauces are the best I've ever, Eh Eh EVER, had! Hands down. And although my next comment could get me into trouble with the boys, I have to say, your nuts are amazing! And...get this...those drongos at customs down in Sydney quarantined the jerky you sent me! Im still mortified by this, but that ain't your fault...and if I have to go to hell and do war with the devil, I will do that to obtain more sauce for my brood! I just finished a long day at work, so Im looking forward to relaxing with your nuts, a-hem, and reading through your cookbook, which I also love! Ok JR...we will talk soon! Haha, as if you needed anymore comments this week! Be well.
In my opinion J.R, you do a fantastic job with King every Monday night. I feel you guys are integral to the overall 'feel' of the show and it wouldn't be the same without you. Do you call every show perfectly? Of course not, but when does anybody do their job perfectly? We're only human. Your passion for the business is still very much apparent and I hope to continue to see you on Raw for a very long time. Thank you for all your hard work and for entertaining people like me, fans.
I cant understand why anyone would ever recommend that you hang up your microphone and boots. I have been watching wrestling since 1984 - I am 30 years old and in my 23 years I have never heard anyone more passion and enthusiasm call a wrestling match. I wonder do any of there people telling you to hang it up remember matches like Mankind vs Undertaker: Hell in a Cell...with the thumb tacks!! When Undertaker threw him off the top of the Hell in a Cell right on the announcers table and you screamed "OH MY GOD HE'S DEAD - SOMEONE STOP THE DAMN MATCH!!....LOL - Of course Mankind was not dead but the way you said it....it made me wonder for a min!! lol Nobody could have called that damn match better. How about the way you would call a Stone Cold match, a match with The Rock or any TLC match (tables ladders chairs). The money in the bank match that Kennedy won from WM 23 stands out especially when Jeff Hardy jumped 20feet off that ladder. Theres no way that its time for you to get out of the buisness - I know people who just watch RAW mostly for you and the King - Alot of people would be mad if you left...trust me.
First off, the "Olympic runner" bit was a harmless joke. I cannot believe that people actually focused in on a throw-away gag and got upset enough to criticize it. Do those people realize that they are watching pro-wrestling? Do what my T-shirt says and "RELAX!" I really don't understand the criticism of the announcing during Jericho's return. What else did people want to hear? The loud & honest response of a live crowd excited to see Jericho? Two pro's going back and forth cutting a solid promo? Sure, someone could've talked during it, but what would it have added? Hell, when a moment like that clicks, that's all you do need when a wrestler is on the mic - sit back and let it play out naturally. In my opinion, the announcers do the storytelling during the matches and in-between segments, which is exactly what JR/King deliver every Monday from 9PM to 11:05PM (and change) eastern standard time. If someone had been talking during that, it would've been annoying. Events were unfolding! Fans were reacting! If Jericho and Orton were stumbling through the direction of what they were conveying, then sure, having an announcer guide the focus of the conversation back on course so at least the fans at home got the point of what is going on would make sense, but if it's not broken, don't fix it. And to me, that's a good example of some fans looking for problems when there aren't any, and the difference between a professional who is good at their job and some fan that wishes they were in their shoes. J.R., please ignore the people that drink "hatorade" and continue to be 1/2 of the best announcing team of the past 15 years (probably even longer). You guys are easily the best combo since Gorilla/Henan. No disrespect intended to all of the talented announcers past and present, but you there's the "best" among any group of professionals. You clearly don't need the pat on the back, nor the advice of fans, but there you go. Rock & Roll. -Tim
J.R., Hopefully the responses you've gotten here prove that you can't let a few rotten apples spoil the bunch. Those guys are absolutely allowed to have their opinions and to voice them, but clearly they're in the minority. Keep up the great work! Cris
I've been a WWE fan for over 25 years. I'm talking back when Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson were calling matches. I've heard a lot of combinations of announcers since. And I can say without the slightest doubt, that in my opinion, JR and the King are by far the best. And you two are at your best when you're together. JR with another "color" guy or the King with another "play-by-play" guy just doesn't really work for me. But together, nobody's even close, as far as I'm concerned. Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan were very entertaining, but I don't think they did as much as far as adding to the match as you guys do. And I'd like to add that, to me, the Triple H/Cactus Jack street fight in 2000 was the best example of how great an announce team you two really are. That was a great match with the sound off, and with the sound on, one of top 2 or 3 matches I've seen in 25 years.
I hate to knock anyone for trying their best but I have to admit, I didn't truly appreciate you and the King as an announcing duo until I heard Coach when he briefly took over. He didn't do "it" for me, at all. Personally, I enjoyed the combination of Tazz and Cole and actually miss that pairing as well. (I think that's a tribute in a way to you and the King because they always came across as a younger, more modern version of you which shows how integral your styles have become!) I like JBL but think he might work better with someone else.
"The new phone books are here, the new phone books are here!" - Hilarious. Your latest blog entry made me think about why it is I watch RAW regularly, but Smackdown and TNA only so often. I've discovered the reason, in large part, is because your announcing style and delivery expertly compliments the action. The subtelty necessary to avoid over-hyping something less than spectacular, and to turn up the volume at just the right moment is sometimes lost on us viewers. The reason, quite simply, is because it is so seamless, that it is not noticeable, it mixes just right with the action in augmenting and amplifying a special moment. Sometimes, the right amount of silence is key to propelling an interesting segment into an unforgetable event. I lament the announcing on TNA, which IMO is holding the company back. I actually have to turn off the volume to enjoy the product. It's not because I dislike the announcers personally (they may be told to scream non-stop for 60 minutes), but there is no ability to gain momentum or induce anticipation. Like a comedian who laughs at his own material and then explains it in detail...along with how you should be reacting...it only takes the wind out of their sails. I find your style and delivery realistic and most often in the proper proportion to the action. As someone who has worked in broadcasting, I can agree that "it ain't as easy as it looks". That being said, I think you continue to do a stellar job, and hope you will stay on-air for a long time to come. Keep up the great work!
I have watched wrestling for many many years but here lately I haven't been because it hasn't been that good because of bad writing and becauce of Vince. JR does a great job!!!! Everyone has to remember that each member of WWE has a script that they go by, is it JR's fault that WWE hadn't pumped up RAW for Y2J's return? Y2J is on the show for a while, leaves and then comes back what is so passionate about that.
I don't give a dern what anyone says, mr. ross is a great announcer and his bbq rocks! trust me it rocks, i'm from arkansas, we know bbq!
One thing your NOT is passionless. Whoever said that doesn't listen to you often. Sometimes you provide excitment to even the most boring matches. Question, when wrestlers get paid, do they get a per diem, for food and lodging and rental cars? Scott Jax fl
Hey JR, Even though you dont get to reply to everybody, I still hope you get to read these comments because i believe some of these people are speaking the truth. What people need to realize is that every moment will be different in the WWE. JR, I rememmber when you were sidelined with Bells Palsy, and your abscense from RAW was definately felt. Your Comeback at Wrestlemania was GREAT, (even though i wish you would have called the Edge vs Foley match). I want you to know from a long time Wrestling fan, that I appreciate what you do day in and day out. Thank you!
Ive been watching WWE for years now and the one thing that keeps me tuning in to Monday Night Raw every week is definately the announcers, yourself and King. No other announce team across the globe has the same drama, excitement or chemistry as yourself and King, and thats a fact. Many of the great moments that have occurred throughout the years have been plastered with your voice, and have in turn made them even more legendary. For example, when I think of the Wrestlemania 14 main event, 'The Stone Cold era has begun.' is recalled. When i think of the HIAC match between Taker and Foley, 'Mankind has been broken in half!' rings in my ears. Whenever I tune in to an episode of RAW im sure to hear 'Business is picking up!', 'This ones gonna be a sloberknocker.' or 'He's gettin' whiped like a government muel!'. Ill take all of the above over Michael Cole's signiture catch-phrase 'Oh My!'. The point is, its absurd to think that your passion for this business is gone. From what I have seen your passion is as strong now as ever, otherwise I doubt you'd still be doing this what after a 30+ year career. I hope that you continue to entertain us for years to come. From one wrestling fan to another, thanks for reading.
Hey JR, I'd just like say that no matter what anyone says, you do a heck of a job announcing. Sure, everyone makes mistakes and maybe it might seem that you "over sell" some things, but it's just one of those cases where the old saying "There's never too much of a good thing" comes into play. You and the King both make Raw that much more fun to watch, and I hope you stick around for awhile. Anyways, onto my question. Everytime I see a Hell in a Cell match, I notice that there are random gaps on the side of the cell, as if some of the fencing was cut off. The gaps are no larger than a fist, but easily noticable when looking at the rest of the fencing. I was wondering if the same Cell is used each time or if there's a reason as to why those holes are there.
J.R I dont understand why people would critic on something they can choose whether to listen to or not to.If they dont like your commentating put the TV on mute.Personally I cant watch raw without your commentating great lines like slobber knocker, goverment mule, scolded dog and more.As far as the hang em up comment, I dont think you should leave commentating for many years, you should only leave if you think you are ready to retire.
Hold it!!!!!!! I've not had a chance in the last couple of weeks to get caught up on the blog here on your site, but what I read today has really made me sick. People thinking that Jr and the King should hang em up? To quote the hurricane "Whas up wit dat???" JR, you and the King do an extraordinary commentary every monday night, and I've been watching for awhile. There is no one in the world that i can think of that can do it any better. You and the king make Raw what it is. The wrestling roster is great, but without you I probably wouldn't watch it. I remember Coachman and Styles and Heyman all doing commentary. Heyman can't replace the king and Coach and stlyes are a long way from replacing you. Granted Joey Styles does a great job on ECW, but he was not a RAW man. Now for any of you JR haters out there, come back to earth and try to think of what RAW would be without JR and the King. 'nuff said.
JR, I read the above mentioned comments with great interest, and would like to take the opportunity to advise those who made them that they can blow them out of their ass. You are, and have been for a very long time, the best wrestling commentator there is, and as a fully paid up member of the Gordon Solie fan club, thats no mean feat. Your passion for the business shines through in every match you call, and you always seem to put the matches over in a way the enhances both the talent, and the storylines. Ignore the haters, and keep on truckin' LD PS - Just caught the "Legends of Wrestling" show from WWE 24/7 from one of my contacts (we dont get it for some idiotic reason here in the UK) its probably the best wrestling related program ever. This show has to get a proper worldwide airing or a DVD release of some kind. Good job!
J.R..... You ARE professional wrestling. Period. I've been watching WWF/E since I was 9 or 10...I'm 20 now...and you have kept me watching, even through the worst of the bad times. If it weren't for you, I don't know if I'd still be watching WWE. There are wrestling "fans" that critique everything and can never be pleased. They want certain wrestlers pushed, but get pissed when they're not pushed "in the right way", etc. Nothing is ever good enough. It's no reflection on your commentary or your level of passion because as you can see 99.9% of the posters here telling you how much they love you. Love Renae
J.R.: Even though the facet of broadcasting I ended up making my career is in local radio news instead of, say, wrestling, but you are one of the reasons I got into broadcasting (I respect your issues with the media i.e. coverage of steroids, the Benoit tradegy, etc.; but believe me, we're not all that way! Us LOCAL news reporters should never be lumped in with the national media). You're announcing is great, period. Your announcing may be different than years ago -- who knows! But times change, people change, wrestling has changed, and broadcasters alter their style to match the times. That's just the nature of the beast. Change or not, you're first-rate, and always will be. Anyone who thinks you're less than great should, as a country song suggests, build a bridge and get over it. One of my biggest pet peeves about radio is that people who criticize often don't know what they're talking about. I used to tell callers who complained (but weren't the least bit polite about it), that if they had a problem with what I did or how I did it, maybe they should send a resume' and an audition tape to the station and prove that you can do better. These people who are criticizing you should either shut up, or send WWE an audition tape. Period. I hope to come to Oklahoma some day to try your restaurant. I sure hope to meet you in person if I do. Thanks for your time.
JR, I agree that a good broadcast team can make a show. My son has gotten into the habit of watching wrestling now, just to see you. He loves your beef jerky. He ask me, "Is that the guy who makes the jerky?" I tell him yes. He watches just to see you. He thinks it's hilarious that you don't get into the ring more like Jerry Lawler, but he also understands Lawler is a wrestler. You are doing a great job, keep up the good work. Kat & Dan
While I do feel that at times this blog should be a little more "real" by breaking kayfabe more frequently, I do appreciate you taking the time out to answer our questions. There are many times in the last few years I have hated what the WWE has given me as a product. But, I continue to tune in because there is still something there that I enjoy. One of the major parts of that "something," is your commentary. You can make a John Cena match seem epic when it is anything but. It's impressive and I hope you continue to do it for many years to come.
JR Keep on doing what you do best. I tune into RAW to listen to you and the King - by far the greatest. I mean, if I wanted to listen to people commentating with no passion and complete stupidity - i'd watch that other company. Keep bringing us the best!!!
Kudos for coming out and addressing the negative comments which you didn't have to do. The fact that you have gone out of your way to do so despite having no need to do so demonstrates in itself your pride and passion in your work.
J.R., you are in the top three most respected people in the business today, in my opinion. You, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels were MEANT to be in the business, and your natural ability calling matches will never go away! God bless you, and don't let the misinformed and mediocre get you down!
JR you and the King are no doubt the best team that the WWE or any other company have. You two are the greatest the only one getting anywhere close to as entertaining as the Raw team is JBL he is a great one. I have even gone so far as to say once JR, Ric Flair, and Undertaker retire from the business I just might retire my viewing. Going to try and make it to JR's BBQ in the Spring hope to see you there after I drive from Mississippi. Thanks for all you do. One last quesiton: any hope of seeing the American Dream on TV much anymore? I also think that the makers of the Dancing with the Stars need to look to the Ameircan Dream as their next wrestling star. Rev. Bradley
JR, I love listening to you and the King every Monday night. You 2 are such are great team I would'nt wanna listen to any other 2 people on Monday Nights(excpet maybe Gorilla and The Brain) but JR and The King are just the best play by play guys out there, and together you 2 are simply to die for. Keep up the good work and long live JR and The King together!!!!!!!!!!!!
You said WWE has 4 announce teams???? Was this a typo or is there a 4th broadcast team I'm not aware of?
AMEN J.R. I remember watching WWE as a kid and loving how Gorilla and Bobby and Vince and Jesse added their flair to a match to make it even more special. You are doing a FANTASTIC job. The Hall of Fame induction is no accident. I, for one, thoroughly enjoy the work of JR and the King. Jerome
Mr. Ross, I've been a wrestling fan since I was a young boy. Now in my late 20s, my interest has waned a bit, but I am still constantly entertained by what you do. I'm not a regular reader of the blog, I confess, but I caught wind of some criticism, and for what it's worth wanted to extend some much deserved praise. Even with some admittedly sparse content to work with, you still maintain a great effort and continue to be un-rivaled. I was a fan of yours in WCW, and honestly could not imagine watching a big match today without you calling it----it just wouldn't be the same. As I said, the content has gotten stale for me, but when I do catch the show (and I usually catch at least a bit) you still do what has always made the plots work, and that is tell a story. Again, I'm sure with all of the mail you get that this may very well fall by the way side, however I wanted to be sure you knew that a majority of fans still surely recognize your considerable talents. One needs only to think of the amazingly well deserved ovation the Raw crowd gave you last year (I think, sorry if it was the year before) when you were announced for the HOF. The crowd was wonderfully passionate, and you were obviously moved, as you should have been. That wasn't just a corteous round of applause, or a well lubricated audience that had downed one two many adult beverages, it was a community that has been with you for a long time that wanted to let you know how much they appreciated you. Mr. Ross, in life all we can ask professionally is to be the best at what we do. Without question, you are the very best at what you do, not only in the field of wrestling but in the sports arena as a whole. Thank you for all that you do, and please know how appreciated you are by true fans of the industry.
I want to back up the JR supporters here, and JR - he's absolutely right that to get worked up about everything is to take away from the truly special moments (although yes, Y2J's return could have done with more of JR's patented excitement). I actually like that JR will show his lack of enthusiasm and at times even criticize things on air (like the Diva Halloween Contest) - it makes him appear like less than a 'company stooge' and more like us, thinking the same things! :) And as for mistakes - yes JR's been making more lately, but he's still pretty spot on. Heck, the Miz couldn't even read cue cards properly barely a year ago!
I refuse to imagine Monday Night RAW without J.R. and The King!!! In fact, when I had the opportunity to take my son to our first LIVE RAW event in Pittsburgh, PA several years ago, I was extremely disappointed that I could NOT hear them! The matches were no where near as enjoyable for me! J.R., bless you for all that you do, for your passion and your dedication to this business ~ to the fans and the athletes alike! I dare any one of your detractors to walk a mile in your boots before they cast criticisms at your feet. As "Shawn" said, you ARE the voice of RAW (not that I don't adore TheKing, I do, but...) and it will be a tearful day for me IF you ever decide to retire! I hope you'll be like Ric Flair and plan to die with your headset on. Just don't do that for a long time to come! God bless you, Jim Ross. I wish I could meet you and give you a big old hug in person. You're a true inspiration. Peace!
jr you are the man. i acn not watch raw with out you ther you make the matchs that mutch more sepcile. i have be watching the old school wwf and now i now what u bring to the table. you make raw what it is you are the vicole of raw for meany yaers to come keep up the good work
Wow...well, truth be told, I don't watch WWE and haven't in years. Why? I find it boring, I prefer MMA myself, but I'm not here to bash, I like JR's advice "If you don't like, don't watch." I have to comment on something though...I have watched a lot of wrestling over the years and the three best commentating teams in my opinin are Gorilla and Ventura, Gorilla and The Brain and JR and Lawler. For anyone to have the notion that JR should hang it up are either joking or just plain dumb. In fact,m there are times I wonder what a MMA fight would be like with JR making the call..."OH MY KIMURA! KIMRA! KIMURA!" Seriosuly though, JR and King are great behind the mic and deserve credit for their hard work. They've been doing this for years and for JR to remain passionate is a credit.
J.R. You are. without a doubt the best announcer the world of wrestling has ever had. I have followed Raw from the very beginning and have always admired your passion and desire for the business that you obviously have. In the times you were absent from our screens, no disrespect to other announcers, Raw wasn't the same. I suffer from bells palsy myself, and know how hard it can be to talk in front of a few people, let alone millions around the world. for that sir, you have my admiration and respect. I think i speak for every fan of wrestling who has had the pleasure to listening to you over the years, thankyou for bringing that extra bit of excitement to our viewing, and i hope you and The King continue to be the very best announcing team wrestling has ever seen for many many years to come. always a fan, michael.
JR you are the most passionate person in wrestling, The greatest announcer of all time dont listen to these people who know nothing. Just keep doing what you do each week, because it is the greatest thing ever in wrestling and it would not be the same without you.
JR ignore all the doubters. You are the best announcer in wrestling and commentary by yourself, Gorilla Monsoon and Vince himself really brightened up the matches when I was growing up and you still do now. So what if you do make an mistake now and again? It's live. It happens. I take part in amateur theatre. It doesn't make you any less talented if you do make the mistake. It makes you human. You and the King should keep doing what you're doing and as long as you prepare thoroughly for broadcasts like you normally do you don't make many mistakes. That's probably why people remember the mistakes you have made because you are so good you don't make many so the few that you do make are noticeable.
My opinion on this matter is my own and not intended to draw the wrath of any of the constant figures here. That being said... I really think that some of this "Crap" that people are posting comes from two reasons: 1. A basic unhappiness with the overall on air product due to injuries releases/suspensions. You people are taking shots at the only person in the WWE willing to make themselves available in this way to the fans. Fans are frustrated and it's understandable but you are directing your venom at the wrong person. You need to aim a lot higher up! J.R. isn't responsible for the injuries to the top talent on the RAW brand and he isn't the one that is writing the story lines. He's just doing his job to the best of his ability which, coincidently, is better than anyone else currently working in the industry. I can remember hearing... "This is the most important night in our sport..." every week back before the USS Billionaire Ted ran aground from ol' Tony S. Is that what you guys want? I didn't think so. I've seen a guy lose his voice over everything, the same way he used to lose it selling semi-worthless baseball cards on a late night shopping network. Is that what you want? I didn't think so. So J.R. is the best currently working in the business and if you can't figure that out, then watch MNF. 2. A lack of understanding in the situation. You all are complaining about J.R.'s supposed "lack" of excitement in Y2J's return. To be honest, it was anticlimactic. After the first promo aired months ago, I told my wife that Y2J must be making a comeback. (I know what you are thinking, but believe what you want, that is what I said.) After all the hype and speculation and trying to make it a "secret" it was made public on the RAW mag before the show and subsequently became the worst kept secret in sports entertainment. Now, if the Rock or Bret Hart would have close lined that runner that would have been something to scream about because it wouldn't have been expected. That's the price that we pay for living in the information age. I think, if I might be so bold, that J.R., like me, was taken aback by the reaction of the live crowd. Now, a complete moron would have sat there and screamed but a pro like J.R. realized the moment that was happening on live TV and didn't try to overshadow it. Take it for what you want as it may well be a million miles off or it could be dead center on the nose... but who cares! I can tell you though J.R., if it weren't for what you do, I doubt that I'd watch. You help tell the story of what is going on in the ring and there is no one else that does it better than you.
You're still one of the greatest announcers in the business. You and The King I might add. I couldn't imagine RAW without you two at ringside. It just wouldn't be the same... So for my money you still got it. The passion is STILL there, and it will never fade away. Oh and everyone of us makes mistakes so don't you worry about that. Anyways, I want to thank you for so many great memories when it comes to wrestling. Without The Voice Of Raw (and The King) those memories would've been surely forgotten.
I was quite shocked to hear that some people actually think that you should retire....thing is J.R., you weren't inducted into the Hall of Fame for nothing, and believe me, you and King are a true legendary announce team. And hey, everyone makes mistakes, sometimes repeats them, but I''m sure you'll keep the Twist of Fate mistake in mind. However, that does not call for your dismissal at all. Just wanted to share this with you, and by the way, Jericho's return was virtually announced on a megaphone and the creative department messed it up even further. Hence, blaming you for that seemingly small return is illogical. Hoping that you and King will keep the voice of Monday night Raw alive, yours truly, John Perkins.
Luis Says: Let the people complaining about J.R. watch a TNA broadcast and listen to the two loud mouth announcers on that show. Then they will appreciate J.R. posted on November 30th, 2007 at 6:30 am I agree with that wholeheartedly, Sure I watch TNA and they are good announcers but my god sometimes they get annoying as hell. J.R. The opinions of 3 people are nothing compared to the ammount of fans you and the king have as a broadcast team. You will never be "Passionless" to me or my fiance.
I totally agree with you J.R. I think you and king get taken for granted some times, mostly because you have done what you do so well for such a long time. Personally I hope you don't have any plans to retire any time soon. Keep up the excellent work!
JR when are Anthology DVD sets going to be made for the Survivor Series and SummerSlam events? Find this out and get back to us regarding this matter. I'm serious too. God Bless Sammy
Wow,The overwhelming responses have brought a warm sensation to my heart,as i know they will for you too J.R. I Don't want to say The same thing everybody else is,but i have been a fan since the age of 3 when my grandmother would take me to The coliseum and the gardens in Cincinnati.I have loved all the announcing for the most part, but honestly nobody does it better than you and the king.Just to put a perspective on whether or not you have passion for the business,I have a son that is 8 years old. When jericho returned that night my son had asked me to wake him if he did.I did and he sat there wide eyed and jabbering, his excitement building with every comment made.A few days later He made out his x-mas list, and i saw alot of wrestlers on there, but there in the mix was the name of good ole' JR lol.I asked why and he said "I have a jerry the king from wwe legends, but what good is he without JR".I had to go on ebay to find one from "back in the day",but rest assure he will have one under the tree this year lol.So to sum it up,even the next generation of fans is noticing how much you mean to the business,So nobody should question your passion if it shows through to an 8 yr old.god bless you jr,and your kick ass barbecue sauces too lol.Keep up the great work. -Squiggy-
These people are completely ridiculous. I don't really watch SmackDown and I've started watching ECW somewhat. But I always absolutely HAVE TO watch Monday Night Raw and it's because of two reasons: it's LIVE, and it's the only place where you hear Jim Ross and the King, the greatest combination there has ever been in commentary. RAW clearly dominates all the other brands in every aspect, and the commentary is one of them. Michael Cole is a very good commentator (along with JBL) and Styles and Tazz are also good, but nobody is (as Ric Flair said when you were inducted to the HOF) as great as you are. When you or the King is missing, it doesn't seem right (especially when they pair you up with Todd Grisham and he is the one that gets to take over - I was very upset when that happened and complained to the WWE for doing that). Simply put: you are the best and I hope that you and King will stay on RAW for a long time. Please.
