J.R. “Called Out”.. Really?.. For What?

Posted in:

My former colleague at WCW and an individual I personally like, Chris Cruise, according to some wrestling websites, has “called me out,” or at least that is the term some sites have used, about my comments regarding the United States Congress investigating steroid, HGH, etc abuse in professional wrestling.

In a recent blog, I made a comment that I personally thought that Congress had better things to do than focus on this matter but did not infer that Congress should cease their investigation. I was thinking of other issues such as our national security, the war we are currently fighting, the economy, health care, education and perhaps even balancing the budget. Nonetheless, Chris makes a valid point about the endless subcommittees that are available to work on matters such as steroids in pro wrestling, all the while the other work that I just outlined still gets addressed. Point well made and well taken.

I have also said in our blogs that I am for ZERO TOLERANCE, as it relates to the illegal use of anabolic steroids and HGH by wrestlers. I have said that many times, as many of you know, who read this space regularly. Even in my latest blog, I mentioned that athletes should simply “not use the damn stuff” but in most reports over the past 24 hours that point was conveniently omitted. I even said that I hoped that Congress would be able to put its arms around this matter and take the necessary steps to solve the problem, but that was even taken to task for what ever reason.

For Chris or any one to infer that I might not care about the health and welfare of today’s wrestlers and the young people who idolize these individuals is simply not an accurate assessment of my feelings and, quite frankly, is somewhat offensive.

I am not a “body guy” and never have been when it comes to my personal taste in wrestlers. My all time favorite wrestlers were not of the “body builder” mold. I would never encourage any athlete in any field of endeavor to use steroids or any other dangerous drug to improve their “look” or enhance their performance. These substances have no place in wrestling or any form of athletic endeavor.

How clear is that?

This response is not meant to “call anyone out” nor am I angry to have my opinion questioned because Lord knows I have been wrong many times in my life, but I have always had the courage to admit such. This response is to clarify my personal opinion of the situation called into question. I cannot and should not be held accountable for any other entity but my own, personal view on this subject. If Congress can help solve the problem, then I salute Congress for getting something done. This step would go miles in changing many American’s opinion of our lawmakers in Washington D.C. not to mention making the business that I love and have devoted 35 years of my life to in becoming a better place for all involved who are in it today and for the generations to come.

Thanks and have a great day.

Kudos for voicing your opinion. It's your First Amendment right! I am on the fence on whether or not I agree with you because Congressional members are supposed to be representative of the people, and it seems that more and more people seem to care about the latest celebtrity scandal and sports (or sports entertainment) more than the healthcare crisis or our economy nowadays. So I see why Congress would address those issues but only if they prioritize steroids and performance enhancers properly amongst the many other important issues facing the nation. But back to wrestling. With Hornswaggle qualifying for the Royal Rumble, do you know if he will be the first "little person" to participate? I've been watching wrestling as long as I can remember and cannot seem to recall one of Hornswaggle's stature in the Rmble before. Just curious. The site is looking good! Keep up the hard work and if I ever make it to Norman from Ohio I will be sure to stop by in person. Thanks!
Hey J.R. I really love listening to your commentary on Monday Night Raw! You truly are one of the greats in sports entertainment. I was just at your restraunt this past saturday, and the food and staff were excellent. I also was going to ask when WWE may come around Dallas or Oklahoma City? Thanks for everything you do for the sport Boomer Sooner Brady
Hi J.R. Wishing You And Your Family All The Best For 2008. I Have Just Finished Watching My Weekly 5 Hours Of WWE. (I Work Away From Home So Tape Raw, ECW, And Smackdown And Watch All In One Sitting.) Anyway, I Have Noticed That The Wealth Of Talent On The Way Up Is Going To Be Very Strong In The Very Near Future. Guys Like M.V.P., Kennedy, The Hardy's, Santino. All Mid Carders, But A Lot Of The Time Are More Entertaining Than The Main Event. It Reminds Me Of The Rock, HHH, Stone Cold Coming Up In The Ninties. The Mid Card Was The Best Thing About The Show During The Attitude Era, And I Can See A Return Soon. Not So Much A Question As A Comment I Suppose!! Thanks JR.
How come the Royal Rumble has no surprises any more? Don't you miss the part of the show where old stars of the past would make an appearance just for a laugh or two? They should allow a multitude of stars from past and present in it. The crowd went crazy when Mr. Perfect returned at the Rumble yrs ago. Same goes when Haku made an appearance. I remember one year they even allowed Dory Funk to come out for kicks. Each year the Rumble is getting more and more predictable.
Hi JR, One thing I've noticed about the current wrestling product is the lack of factions. It seems that feuding factions were a staple of the "attitude era" of wrestling. Why do you think there aren't many factions today? Is it the lack of talent or have factions simply been over used in the past?
Hi JR, I was wondering, since ECW has basically become a secondary Smackdown show since the talent exchange, is there any chance that we get a televised secondary show for RAW, kinda like HEAT but maybe call it something else like WCW or something. I like the talent exchange idea because we get to see the ECW talent interact with Smackdown talent and it is not the same watered down rivalries from before. We also get to see Smackdown talent who normally would not get to perform. I would like to see something like this for RAW that could go on another night like maybe Wednesday or Sunday. Wrestling every night would be so nice. Also, since every program insists on having a "Diva" segment, and RAW is the only brand who has more than a couple of active Divas, I think there should be a talent exchange in that division or maybe introduction of new talent. I get tired of the same rivalries every week with maybe a different twist such as Michelle and Victoria on Smackdown and Kelly Kelly and Layla on ECW. ECW needs it the most as I think real wrestling Divas would be good there. I would love to see a match between Beth Phoenix and Awesome Kong.
Hey J.R. Matt from Ohio here, just wondering how your doing? I was watching your legends show on the territories the other day, and that story you told about them 2 promoters wanting to kill Vince was one of the greatest stories i've ever heard! I could just imagine what you were thinking when they said that lol. Did you tell Vince that story? I'm sure he would get a kick out of that.
Hi JR, always nice to see WWE guys finding the time to post on the internet, i've got a quick question for you, since PPV's are all tri-branded now, do you feel that more time is needed between events to build up matches?
Hey JR, What is your opinion on David Sammartino and why he never really became a star. My memories of him were from his early WWF days and I never really liked him much (he looked like a "Butterball" to me) but I was watching UWF the other day and saw him. He looked good (ok we now know he used steroids to get that way, but at the time we didn't) and he cut a pretty good promo prior to his match. His wrestling looked pretty sound and smooth as a mat based wrestler. Why do you think he never really took off? PEACE Jay-Bird
Hello Jim Ross, It seems that when a lot of wrestlers leave a company, whether it be WWE or any other, they want to go on the internet and do "shoot" interviews claiming that they were held back, or "buried" due to backstage politics. In your opinion, does this really happen that often, or are most of these guys/gals making excuses for why they couldn't get "over" (sorry, had to throw that wrestling term in there. I hope I don't offend)? Another question. Through different things that I have read, it seems that you and Jim Cornette are/were very good friends. He was a great manager and a very entertaining personality to have on t.v. in any roll. Are you still close? Do you think we will ever see him on WWE t.v. again, in any sort of fassion? Also, just a comment. I agree with DeaDmaN's comments about the secondary titles. I wish more of the programs being worked were focused on being a champion or becoming a contender. It seems like it has gotten better in the last few months, but still nothing like it was in the mid to late 80's. Thanks for listening. In my opinion you and Jerry Lawler are probably the best commentating team in the history of pro wrestling, or at least the best and most entertaining I have seen.
the big show jus got signed to a wwe full time return contract!
I was just wondering if you could tell us anything about the upcoming WWE DVD based on Sting. I understand that WWE owns the WCW video library (along with pretty much every other wrestling video library, right? ha ha), but I just thought WWE would want to stay away from a wrestler in another promotion. Also, you say there are too many championships, if you let’s say were in a position to possibly remove any championships from the WWE, what would they be? One last thing, if you don’t mind, with so many Superstars appearing on other brands and the SmackDown/ECW talent exchange, do you think that the WWE may eventually deactivate the brand extension, allowing Superstars to appear on all brands? Thank you, Tommy West Virginia
Hi J.R. For the fans who have asked about D-Lo Brown lately, D-Lo was at the TNA house show in Austin on Thursday night. He looked like he put on a little weight, but still looked a lot lighter than he did when he was with the N.O.D. He was sitting at Ringside with Jeremy Borash during all of the matches. TNA's first show in Austin was fun, it was very much like an independent show, maybe 600 people or so in attendance. It was an enjoyable night of wrestling action and it was funny to hear the crowd chant "You Screwed Bret" because Hebner was one of the refs. I think, as a wrestling fan, you probably would have enjoyed. I will see you in Austin on February 4th for RAW. Take Care.
You're one of the most honorable & respected man in the wrestling business. You tell it like it is, without actually insulting the person/people involved. Not agreeing is one thing, calling you out on the internet is another thing. Well, life goes on. I'm sure you got more important things to worry about, like your restaurants, your health & doing your commentary job as best as you can. Hopefully I can meet you & taste some southern BBQ from your restaurant. However, I have school to take care of up here in NYC. Starting on February 25th to major in Music Production & Music Engineering. Take care JR! P.S. The Royal Rumble is shaping up to be a great event live. 8-)
Who is this Cruise fella to question you? Didn't know he was even alive. Nothing like a former d-leauge announcer questioning a great like JR. Was probably desperate to get his name in print again. Sad. Anyway, just wanted to get your thoughts JR on the original Legion of Doom, I often think of them as the group that paved the way for the Horsemen. Not many realize LOD was a group, not just the renamed Road Warriors. Jake the Snake, and one of, in my opinion, the most underrated guys, The Spoiler. Wonder how many realize where Taker got his rope walking from (they call it Old School now, but I remember being amazed at how the Spoiler could walk the ropes back in the day, now thats old school). And of course, all of this mayhem was lead by one of the great managers/talkers, Precious Paul Ellering. By the way, where is Paul now? Is he still involved in any way with wrestling? Sorry for the long post, just wanted to say keep doing the great job you do JR, and to heck with people like Cruise.
Big Ups to you JR! Long time Wrestling fan, first time blogger! Just wanted to say how I appreciate the "realness" of who you are, you stay out of the "gimmicky" limelight that has hovered over wrestling personas for a long time...I love Lawler, but he's got his gimmick, same for JBL and Taz, but you, you are just you...an honest, wrestling loven, BBQ eating cowboy... and by the way, if you really socked "Big Dick Johnson", it's about freaking time...He is one person who should not be involved in any way shape or form in WWE anymore...DX has faded away and so should "BDJ"... Go CHARGERS!
Hey Jr! Just wanted to drop a line and put you over. I'm 35 years old and you are my generations Gordan Solie. looking forward to the oct. Pay per view here in Portland. When you retire (@ least another 10 years from now please) i will be eagerly awaiting your book. If you're not in the feds hall of fame the second you retire i'll riot ! At least you're already in the observers. Cheers! Jason Keebler. Portland Oregon.
Jr, with WWE programing going HD in a few weeks the rumors are abound that the 3 Brands will get new entrance sets. So my question is out of all the PPV and TV sets that have ever been used which one is your favorite.
Hey JR !- Happy New Year from one of the greatest marks in Virginia! I hope you still remember me; I'm the fan that so desperately wants your personalization in your cookbook as a gift for my stepdad. He has Bell's Palsy, too, and is a public speaker and one of the most recognizable voices in the Hampton Roads region, as he is a former prime time sportscaster for the local ABC network. He also is a cancer survivor, being less a kidney for over a decade. Mr. Ross, I know that I really can't quantify exactly how busy you are; words probably won't do it justice. However, I will be at ringside on the 1/21 broadcast from my great home town of Hampton, Virginia, and I would be in debt to you always if I could make my way to you and you could write just a few words for him. It seems to me that the both of you have been to a few of the same places and he would appreciate the smile from words. I'll be sober and holding a sign, asking for you. By the way, I could LIVE off of your bbq sauce; I just can't get enough. Thanks also for being the voice behind some of my fondest childhood memories.....:) -Ryan In Hampton RINGSIDE ON 1/21 !!!
Hey JR, Thanks for clearing that up, but we knew what you meant the first time! People read too much into things, and as the voice of the hottest TV show around, everyone assumes that what you say is official Stamford law. OK, off the soapbox- How much scouting is the WWE really doing out in the indies. There are really some good ones out there, but it seems as if the scouts missed the last couple of ones coming in. As you know, the "big" guys are not getting any younger, and the "little" guys don't seem to know how to move up. Thanks for your time, and I hope to get some sauce in the near future to see if it competes with my own homegown Alabama stuff!! Jesse
JR, I think people come to this blog and read what they want to read. You are very well spoken, articulate, and I think most people understand what you are saying in your comments. My support goes out to you. Quick question if I may. I know you've said, and I agree, that a modern day diva's looks and style are more important than their in-ring ability. (or their potential ability for that matter) While I agree with this assessment, I can't but help notice that Mickie James is arguably the most popular diva at the moment, and she's a mix of both beauty and physical ability. Wouldn't this encourage any promotion to continue to find such a balance? I hope you hear your valued opinion!
Hey JR! Just had some random thought from under the Black Fire Hat… Do you still keep in touch with Earl Hebner and Tim White? It’s a shame Earl is gone, he is synonymous with much of the Main Events in the WWE for years. I have been watching Ric Flairs matches these past few weeks, and I think it’s sad that the match end with it seeming that Flair just squeaked by with a win. Yes he is older, but he has forgotten more about wrestling than most of the roster will ever know. It’s a shame that his patented figure four is no longer a winning hold, but just a routine hold. A few years ago a figure four was a finisher, now it seems like nothing more than a basic hold. Flairs figure four is a match winner, just look to the list of men that have fallen to it. Whats your take?
Hi JR, Just Wondering What's The Status On John Cena, Bobby Lashley And Candice Michelle At The Moment? How Far Away Are They From InRing Action And Do You Know When They Are Due Back In wwe Again. Boomer Sooner
Hey, Happy birthday, I did not realize, until you mentioned it in your blog, that your birthday was the same as my own. I am proud to have the same birthday as yourself for the simple fact that I wish to have the same passion for wrestling as you, and to say that I already do would be an insult to yourself, as you have a gift, knowledge and passion that is paralleled. I have been writing story lines based on wrestling for some time now and often adapt them for use when I act or direct, as I find them to be as passionate as any other form of entertainment and completely untapped in the UK, where I live. Could you let me know what the most emotional part of any storyline has ever been for yourself and also what your most emotional non-story line event in wrestling been as think this will be a big insight into yourself. Many thanks for your time, Alex Ruos
Justin Credible said ona interview recently that you told him backstage to get off the ''STUFF'' because you thought he was getting too big. Is this true JR? It sounds like you had no problem with steroids being used in the WWF in the attitude era.
Mr. Ross Do you use propane or charcoal when you BBQ?
Hey J.R., Any idea when the WWE is coming back to Canada, I heard that they are thinking of hosting Wrestlemania 25 in Toronto, is that true?
Do you keep up with any college basketball or are you just a football guy? And whats your thoughts on Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl?
I've never heard of Chris Cruise. This reminds me of when Chris Kanyon tried to re-establish his name by claiming he was/is gay. It seems like a publicity stunt to me. If Cruise had consistently followed JR’s Blog, he would have known that JR believes in zero tolerance and does not condone the use of performance/ physique enhancers. As far as the performance enhancer situation is concerned, I think it is blown out of proportion. There will always be offenders in any sport who use chemical aids to give them an edge, and those individuals should be held accountable for their actions. However, to insinuate that virtually every athlete in professional sports is an abuser of substances is a bit naive. It is possible to get good results naturally from going to the gym, and concentrating on having a balanced diet. Additionally, perspective and lighting play a strong role in why wrestlers looks so "big". Personally, I was disappointed to see that a lot of the wrestlers who look huge on TV aren't very big in person. The people who look like bodybuilders on TV are actually similar to magicians, because they both use illusion to fool viewers into thinking they see something that is different from reality.
I want to see a Steel Cage match on RAW Good Ol' J.R. vs Chris "The Crispy Cruiser" Cruise!
With no disrespect to Chris Cruise, I think it is better left to the companies involved to police their own ranks, like WWE is doing, rather than more government involvment, which is probably being done more for political chest beating than actually trying to accomplish anything. Politicians are known for using situations like this to get their name in the paper and nothing more. The less politicians involved the better.
JR, keep up the great work with the BBQ business, and on Raw. Short and sweet, who do you think will go to the Superbowl, and who will win it.
Hey wanted to say I live in El Reno, OK and am quite the BBQ fan, and I finally got to go to your restaraunt. I went there and the food was delicious! I loved the fries I think they are better than the famed McDonald's and the chipotle ketchup it was phenomenal. I love wrestling but man I just had to tell you that I loved your restaraun. Anyways keep up the good work.
Hi JR...Could you give us updates on Bobby Lashley and John Cena? I'm also curious to hear your thoughts on the NFL Playoffs as we head into the Divisional round...Thanks, and have a great weekend!
Hi JR! First off, good on you for not letting folks twist your words for their own slanted storytelling! Secondly, you said in a recent column that Beth Phoenix reminded you of a young Hulk Hogan; and I have to agree, though I'm not sure if we agree for the same reasons! Phoenix is a very talented woman and undoubtedly is more of a wrestler than a "Diva". It feels like the fate of women's division being taken seriously rests on Beth's shoulders. Though there are a few talented performers on the roster (specifically Victoria, Mickie James, Layla) I feel like, with more women's competition that is actually competitive (I mean, Ashley? Seriously?) the women's division can be much more than pudding matches and swimsuit contests. I don't expect a return to the days of Mildred Burke, but wouldn't it be nice to at least go back to Sherri Martel, Velvet McIntyre and the Jumping Bomb Angels? (as long as Sherri isn't commentating, God bless her! :-) )Your thoughts?
JR - Anyone who has read your blog on a semi-frequent basis knows what your stance has been on steroids all along. While Chris's point is well taken as you said, I also feel that sometimes it's easy to call attention to yourself by calling out someone who is more of a public icon than you...which to me is what Chris did. Keep up the great work!
Well put JR! I think this blog should shut the idiots up who "called you out". I also think that congress should have better things to do, like protecting US citizens from threats from both Iran and Pakistan, especially in light of today's news of Pakistan threatening to take action against US soldiers on the Afghanistan border. This is a troubling world we live in, and I am glad that you, JR, provide us a get away in the form of entertainment through your commentary on Monday nights and through your blogs on this site. Take care, and keep up the good work on RAW! Ken
Hey JR, I don't blame you for wanting to respond, but all you're really doing is giving Chris Cruise an extra few seconds of fame, since his 15 minutes ended a long time ago. It's been pretty obvious that whenever there is a remotely controversial topic out there, Cruise will write a letter to Meltzer or jump on a talk show and try to get his name out there from it. I'm willing to bet Cruise never even tried to email you about this topic, because all he really wanted was the public attention.
What are your thoughts on the pending signing of Chris Harris? I've watched him from the start in TNA and think he's exactly the sort of signing WWE need. He's a midcard waiting to happen from the off and could be a world champion one day. He will be great on any of the three brands. Admin www.theunprettier.com
If you could choose one legend, who has not already appeared, to join the 24/7 Legends show who would it be? Personally I’d love to see William Regal join in. I think he’d have a very interesting perspective in the discussions.
Hello Friend. You are so well within your rights to voice your opinion no matter what ANYONE thinks!!For that reason alone, you being called out is just stupid .I agree with you on your opinion that Congress should pay more attention to other things because the harsh truth is that people should be held accountable for their actions .And if it takes the good LORD above to get involved then so be it because whether we like it or not, that is who it is up to. It is just a shame that so many of our youths will be affected by it because their " heroes"are doing it.Great post and don't let the naysayers bring you down.Take Care Hall of Famer.
Hey J.R., I'm a big fan. I had two quick questions. 1) The Best of Raw DVD is great, but it seems to me like it was a little bit rushed. The back of the case advertises a few moments (such as Mr. McMahon's paternity test) that weren't actually included in the DVD. My question, is do you ever think in the near future they might release a volume 2, with stuff they missed, hopefully with more matches. 2) I was wondering if WWE has any plans to make up the cancelled shows from last summer here in Canada (particularly Edmonton). I fully understand with the Benoit situation being a touchy subject, especially here in his former hometown, but I'd like to think fans still want to see the WWE back, and I think enough time has passed to avoid too much of a media frenzy. I know us Canadian's would love to see fellow Canucks Y2J and World Champion Edge back! Thanks!
Hey J.R. just wanted to let you know I've been watching a lot of old Mid-South lately. There's a 10 disc set of Mid-South matches and angles going around that's really great. It's amazing to see what guys like Bob Roop and Mr Olympia and the many other stars of Mid-South can do in the contraints of 10 minute time limit TV match. I wish some of the young guys today could see stuff like this and see how to tell a story in the ring in such a short amount of time. Also want to say you are a great part of watching Mid-South and had some awesome interactions with guys like Ted Dibiase and others.
Hey J.R. happy newyear! Brock Lesnar has made the switch to mixed martial arts and he was a former wwe champion, i was wondering if you think anybody on the current WWE ROSTER would make a great mixed martial arts fighter. (I hear the Undertaker and JBL are the real deal's when it comes to fighting ability.)
Hi JR happy new year may this year be a good one for you and your family and all the folks at WWE. I have two questions 1. Talent vs Gimmick what is the current situation at WWE when it comes to superstars RAW talent vs a good gimmick? in the past we saw stars blossom when they dropped there gimmicks "HBK after leaving the rockkers, The Rock and Stone Cold" at the same time rosey didnt do so well but Umaga shot to the top in a matter of weeks using a gimmick from his family heritage. at the same time Undertakers American Bad Ass gimmick wasnt so cool everybody wanted the Deadman back and we got him. MVP and Kennedy along with a few others are not getting the rise we would have hoped is it because there gimmicks are not working or they need to be themselfs and let there raw talent shine trough? 2. tittle prestige I have noticed that the BIG guns on WWE dont really care about the lower tier titles like they use to. I remeber Randy Savage VS HBK intercontinental Title HBK VS Razor Ramon Intercontinetal Tittle Stone cold, goldburg and a few others as United states champion even the Tag team tittels were not big enough for Brother of Distruction and DX to go after them. Why is it that the younger stars remeber the pretige the smaller Tittles use to have an the Super Super stars dont. Why dont we See HHH going for Jeffs title or Batista for the US title Why dont we see legendary Tag teams fighting it out BOD, DX instead we have all this new talent with no Pay per view Hall of fame matches to there names and tittles only the young stars want. I am happy to see Edge take the Major brothers under his wing and giving them a push. Hopefully he can do for them what ric Flair did for Chris Benoit, RKO and the Animal. from a rainy south Africa thanks for all the hard work you do on the show.
Hi JR, are you coming to the Fan Axxess in February to the Mall of America? Would love to meet you!
You are actually giving a response to Cruise? To hell with him, is he even still working in the wrestling biz? You've made the commment on the 24/7 legends show about if you was starting a wrestling company (said name) would be at the top of the list. Well if you had to pick 5, whom would you pick (tag-teams counting as one). Mine would be..... 1.Ric Flair (The Greatest of ALL-TIME) 2.The Roadwarriors (with Paul Ellering) 3.Tully Blanchard (My personal fav.heel) 4.The Midnight Express (w/James E. Cornette) 5.The Mulkey's (someone has to get beat!)
Congress and the media owe their continued unquestioned power to an audience that forgets the previous weeks' big news item. Thus, after exploiting this tragedy for all its TV ratings and political posturing, the public has forgotten and moved on without any real political progress and without any real conclusive reportings on the additional evidence. That's the cycle we adhere to in our culture. Hopefully the WWE can pull something positive from this in the continuing years.
