Just wanted to see if you have heard any news on how Gregory Helms might be doing with his rehab and (hopefully) eventual return? Being a North Carolinian I’ve always been a homer with my fan support and he was one of my favorites in the ring.

Gregory is on target to return in the middle of the year. Let’s hope he doesn’t rush it.

hey i been a fan of wwe all my life since i started watching it the hbk and sherri martel days and ever since this he’s been my favorite wrestler.i also been a favorite to the smackdown game series but i believe they need too step it up i really like 08 but i seen the new tna game and its looking pretty damn good the graphics best yet from any wrestling game out now.my question is will we see the same damn smackdown fall 08 u were talking about or are they really listening to the fans this time around?

I’m no video game expert Chris and if you have issues with the WWE video game, perhaps you should contact THQ. I read the scripts to the best of my ability and call it a day. I have read many accounts of how much people do like the THQ produced games.

My favorite wreslter is JBL.I was heartbroken when he left smackdown to go to raw.But I check wwe.com and his website what he has been doing on raw.Oh I live in Oklahoma.

For an Okie, you have a strange taste in wrestlers.

Hey JR! I have got to ask if you think this is the year Ron Simmons will get inducted into the Hall of Fame? There’s no doubt in my mind he is for sure hall of fame material. Do you think he will get in at some point if not this year?

This year, most likely not, but one never knows what the future holds as it relates to the WWE Hall of Fame. It is a challenging entity to figure out.

I think you and the King are the best commentary team in professional wrestling. I really like how you both are great at adding a sense of drama along with technical information to a match. Here are some questions I have for you relating to female wrestlers.

1) When (if at all) will Nattie Neidhart be brought up to the main roster, and if she is brought up to the main roster will it be as a face or a heel?

2) Are there any female wrestlers (both inside and/or outside the WWE development territory) that the top brace in the company have their eyes on and is considering offering them a contract (either the development or main roster type)?

3) I have notice that a lot of the TNA Knockouts were either in WWE development territories or had a match or 2 on heat. If you are aware can you please explain the reasons why they didn’t make it to the main roster, especially the following ones?

Angelina Love (Angel Williams)
ODB
Velvet Sky (Talia Madison)
Rhaka Khan (Tranesha Briggers)
Raisha Saeed (Cheerleader Melissa)

Alex

When WWE officials deem she is ready or when they have something for her. Nattie looks like a keeper.

Athletic women with breast enhancements always have a chance.

I have no idea why these ladies did not make the WWE, but obviously the decision makers thought the women weren’t ready or had little to offer at that particular time. Nonetheless, ODB is fun to watch.

I will be going to my first live Wrestlemania in Orlando. My son live there and got us tickets. We are also going to 2 Ring of Honor shows, so we will get a full weekend of wresting. I am a long time wrestling fan, growing up watching the AWA. I am also a fan of our local indy organization 3XWrestling. I love wrestling live.

Which match either confirmed or rumored are you most interested in seeing as an announce or as a fan?

Flair vs. HBK…..hands down.

Hey JR. I write this every time I comment your blog, but thanks again for taking the time out of what must be a hectic schedule to write here. As a fan, such an insight into your opinions is worth its’ weight in gold.

I wanted to express my feelings with regards to Jeff Hardy’s recent push and I wondered if you agree or disagree with my prognosis;

Jeff’s been a strong face for over nine years now, but until he was re-signed after his last absense, he was never pushed strongly as a single’s competitor. His past indiscretions (not turning up to shows, drugs etc- these things were reported, some at least must have been true), which led to his prior employment being terminated, cannot be ignored and are also surely reasons why his push is being paced as it is. Is it intelligent to push a guy who could slip up and be a liability? I believe not. However, he deserves a chance and that’s what he is getting. But instead of being rocketed straight to the top, he’s getting there gradually. If he wins this year’s MITB this would be perfect- he would have a whole year, then, in which to solidify his reliability and credibility as a singles competitor and an employee and finally be given his chance to lead the show/brand/company. I am personally a HUGE fan of Jeff and I hope he pulls it off.

I too am a Jeff Hardy fan and I hope that no one has lost confidence in Jeff as I feel, as many fans do, that Jeff is a potential long term main eventer who can sell tickets and merchandise. I also would like to think that Jeff’s past has nothing to do with his future. Time will tell and until the magic moment comes let’s just hope Jeff and his fans continue to do what they have been doing and then let the chips fall where they may.

How does the Undertaker himself feel (or knowing him how you think he’d feel) about his WM streak? Do you think he is really proud of it and would like to retire with it, or looks at it from the perspective that it would really help somebody if he lost to them at Mania?

I would HATE it if Taker ever lost at Wrestlemania, because it’s his greatest stat/number claim to fame. HHH has gotten over twice as many reigns as Taker in half the time. Undertaker deserves this streak and since nobody else will ever come close, I think he should keep it for himself as his loyal fans. Thoughts?

I have never talked to Taker specifically about his streak, but I am sure he is proud of the achievement. When one thinks about the streak it is really a helluva deal in today’s marketplace.

J.R.
First I have to say thank you for all the years you have kept wrestling fresh and suspended disbelief when needed.
You are the voice of professional wrestling sir and I thank you.
Having the luxury of being 40, I have been a wrestling fan and seen wrestling change and grow into the sports entertainment that today we all know love and at times hate.
I could look back at my 30 plus years of being a fan and dwell on all the wrong angles and storylines the writers and creative teams in the WWE have attempted, but I choose to keep my memories of wrestling positive.
The one thing I do find sad with wrestling these days is how fans have been conditioned to expect a huge *pop* and have a match over in 7 to 12 minutes.
I truly do miss the days when storlines and wrestlers could hold a crowd on their feet screaming for 30 to 60 minutes…. in just one match.
If anyone reading this shakes their heads at the thought of watching a 30 or 60 minute match… Find yourself some tape of Rick Flair and Ricky Steamboat, or Rick and Dusty…. You will see wrestling as it should be.
I know things evolve and change in the sport and that due to time constraints and the push they need to make for certain talent or the next big P.P.V. 30 to 60 minute matches are nearly impossible but it would be nice to see a match last more than the average 12 minutes.
Yours from frozen North of Canada

We live in a fast food society where it is there in 30 minutes or it’s free, we sit with channel changers in hand while watching TV, and younger people, especially, want and think they need instant gratification. Many of today’s fans would rather write or read about controversy or dirt than to dissect a 60 minute match. I will be most likely criticized by those that critique every word I write because I even addressed this topic.

Greetings from England JR!

I’ve been a fan of the WWF/WWE since I can remember and was wondering whether you think that Kane is being utilized correctly in the WWE. Since i was about 8, i’ve always liked him and his own ’storyline’ was one of the most interesting to grace our screens. Recently however Kane hasn’t had major parts to play in heavyweight title contention. It seems a shame that he doesn’t get titles as he is a fan favorite, and i feel one heavyweight title reign. Just wondering your opinion on his character and his future within the WWE.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and good luck with everything you do! I’d love to taste some of that Jerky!

You can facilitate tasting our Beef Jerky by going to our never closed online store and buying some and we will ship it to you in the UK. Kane is an intriguing character that seemingly more and more people are writing us about. Kane is a bona fide main eventer who I hope gets another run with a title before he decides to hang it up.

I was wondering do you think a DVD collection of Jerry The King Lawler will ever be made?

Considering King has never wrestled at Wrestlemania, has never had a WWE T shirt of him manufactured, and is forced to carry J.R. on his back every week, I would take the under on the Lawler DVD. However, if the Memphis TV stuff was available, then the DVD would be a classic.

JR, will we ever get to see the old wwwf tv shows from the 70’s and early 80’s, we see the other territories which is great but growing up in Pennsylvania and attending the regular tapings in Hamburg it would be a lot of fun to go back and watch and relive the memories, thanks.

I don’t know how far back the WWWF library goes as it relates to the condition of the original tapes, but one would assume the answer would be yes and it would be on WWE 24/7.

JR, As a “HOOK”EM HORNS ALUM” I have mix feelings about the Redriver Shoot Out leaving dallas. Just woundering what Sooner fans have to say? My one Expierence was not pleasent as OU won 63to14. Also what does Sooner fans think of C. Sampson he seems to get in hot water everywere he go’s?
“hook”em Horns 99-01.

I don’t know any red blooded Sooner fan who wants the Red River Shootout to leave the Cotton Bowl. I sure don’t. Kelvin Sampson has not done himself any favors, to say the least, repeating the same essential violations at Indiana as he did at Oklahoma. It’s hard to figure as Kelvin always seemed to me to be a decent guy, but his arrogance in this matter is obvious. Too bad he has screwed himself so badly, as he is a really good hoops coach.

I grew up watching Lawler in the late 70’s to early 90’s in the Evansville area. He was so over in the this area as he would always go up against the monster heels, brawl with the best, and pull off the occasional scientific match with the current NWA or AWA champion in 60 minute classics. Do you think Jerry would have made a good NWA champion back in the late 70’s or early 80’s? Short or long term?

Without a doubt, for the exact reasons you mentioned, but he wasn’t in the proper political loop to get to the "mountain top" in the NWA.

Hey there J.R.! Great blog as always. Got a quick question for you: how long do you think it will be before Steve Austin gets inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame?

BTW, I did pick up Austin’s DVD set this past week and it is a great collection.

All the best! Jason from Queens, NY

Hard to say, but perhaps as early as the 25th Anniversary of Wrestlemania which is in 2009.

Mr. Ross…

I have been a lifelong fan of pro wrestling, from WWE to WCW to Smokey Mountain to the Indys…I know that people are alway throwing booking ideas at you, as all Internet fans are “smart” to the business. I never thought I would be doing this but here’s what I thought would be a great idea. Bring back Clash of the Champions, and have the RAW title holders face-off against the SmackDown title holders.

I am still a huge face vs heel guy….old school….so it would have to work out that way…for instance…

HHH or Cena vs Edge (Heavyweight)
Jeff Hardy vs Matt Hardy (IC vs US)
Then a tag match
Throw in a 6 man tag
A womens match
A gimmick match….etc.

Thank you for your time.
PS. Roster drafts suck, just do trades instead

Trades with the deal built up over weeks of TV intrigues me as a fan.

great read as always JR. Got a quick question, though. After watching Raw last night, how come you guys are not acknowledging Paul Burchill’s History on Smackdown, both as RAW GM William Regal’s tag team partner, as well as his singles run as a pirate (the later of which was actually featured in last year’s Smackdown vs Raw Video game)?

Helluva good question…..wish I knew the answer.

Hi JR
First post from me as i usually watch the wrestling a couple of weeks behind.
Just wanted to ask about why the WWE ‘forgets’ about stars of the past. ie Beth Phoenix is the most dominant female ever - moreso than Chyna? Kurt Angle (when in the wwe) was the only olympic gold medallist, what about the Iron Sheik? Im sure there are other examples. Is this something thats done to perpetuate the storyline at the time, rather than belittle the former wrestlers?

The WWE doesn’t have the franchise on forgetting the past as this has been the norm, for better or worse, since I got in the business. Out of sight out of mind. If one is not here they don’t exist.

Hi JR. My question is rather simple. Why is Ric Flair considered the greatest in ring performer of all time? I am not a newbie fan of professional wrestling and have been watching it religiously since 1986 when I was 4. I have seen countless matches by the WWE, WCW, ECW, NWA, Mid Atlantic (which ended up becoming the NWA) WCCW, IWGP, All Japan, and a list that can go on forever, so it is not as if I am oblivious to all things wrestling. Al though I think Ric is in the top 5 of the biggest names of all time (the others being Hogan, Austin, Andre, and the Rock), worked his behind off every night like no other, had INCREDIBLE promos, and was the franchise of all things NWA back in the 1980’s, I never found about 85-90% of his matches to be “dramatic.” In his recent book “Hitman,” Bret Hart mentions that he thought Ric lacked in ring psychology. I agree. I have always thought Ric’s matches were more about great athletiscm as opposed to drama. For example, back at Starrcade 1993 when he pinned Vader out of nowhere when the crowd was not only not expecting it, but really not as much into the match as they could and should have been when wrestlers “go home,” it lacked drama. It is kind of like when Razor Ramon pinned Dean (Shane) Douglas at In Your House 10/95 to win the I-C belt. The pin was not only out of nowhere, but the crowd was not where they should have been when an ending is going to come. Fans like having their emotions played with, and usually the most memorable finishes are the ones in which the crowd can “feel” an ending coming, and are on the edge of their seats, as opposed to the IYH example I just gave, or for MANY of Ric’s matches. I know you probably disagree since this is all subjective, but I have been told my opinion is crazy. I think I at least have a point to make. Whether I am right or wrong is in the eye of the beholder, but I certainly feel like I make a well thought out position. Does my point at least have some validity, regardless of how much?

Your point is well made and not without you giving it plenty of thought, but I politely disagree. Yes, these things are subjective which means there most likely is no 100% right answer, but in my eyes Flair is the best ever.

J.R. Says

bd

When the Tazz/Patterson/Hayes/Foley season of “Legends…” ends what are the chances of getting Ric Flair on the panel? A Flair/Rhodes/Hayes/Graham EPISODE would be amazing, a full season of those four would necessitate a DVD release with hours of bonus footage.

I could easily see Ric on the Legends panel some day. I am not in the loop as to the members of the panel or the subjects that are discussed but I like your idea.

J.R. Says

David In Tulsa

Been watching you since Mid South. Wouldn’t be wrestling without you.

Wondering your opinion on something.

Wrestling doesn’t seem to have the same feeling it once did. In the past, you mostly saw squash matches on TV followed by an in-ring interview that would set up a storyline. At the end of the show, a big main event match would start, you would see 2 minutes of it and just as the action was getting good, the show would “run out of TV time”. It was a way to make people buy a ticket to be able to see the main event in person since you couldn’t see the end of it on TV. World title matches were never given away for free on TV, which I believe is why Television Titles were created.

This made events such as Wrestlemania, Clash of the Champions and Saturday Night’s Main Event very special. PPVs and events like Clash and SNME were the only time you could see Hogan vs Bundy, Flair vs Magnum and so forth.

But, in the 90s, televised wrestling mutated and the squash matches basically went away. We started seeing more of the main event type matches. But, after watching HHH and Orton fight it out week after week on TV, a PPV match doesn’t seem that special.

Do you feel the methods of delivering the product was better in the past or the present?

Not bashing either style, just that with 24/7 and watching the old NWA and WCCW shows, I miss the old ways. I understand it will never go back, which is why I’m happy 24/7 exists.

Television and the lust for ratings changed the game as did the national cable overlay which caused wrestling TV shows to be produced differently than the local, syndicated shows. The old format you described certainly made things more simple but today’s TV shows serve so many different masters that a change in philosophy was inevitable. I don’t think we can ever go back as many pundits and fans raise hell when they see a "squash match" which, in today’s marketplace, would likely equate to a changing of the TV channel.

Hi JR,

A few questions for you:
1- WHat happened to Harry Smith, Nattie and Teddy?

2- Why did Scott Steiner leave WWE? He was great there.

Harry is on RAW, Nattie is training in Florida and Teddy was released.

Talent usually leaves for one of two reasons, money or creative. I am not sure the exact reason Scott left.

J.R. Says

Hi J.R!

Was wondering whether or not you would prefer a return of sorts of the Monday Night Wars if TNA (or a similar promotion) were to get their act together. I can not see it at the moment due to the quality of their product, but I do believe competition is good for business and can (but not always) bring out the best in a company.

Love the competition aspect, but the dynamic that existed between the WWE and WCW during the "Monday Night Wars" is unlikely to ever occur again.

J.R. Says

Kirk(Toronto, Canada)

Hi JR,
I love this blog, it reminds of the old Ross Report. I’m not sure if you can speak on this on here, but I would like your thoughts on something. It about Ric Flair’s retirement angle. I’m not a real fan of it and should have been booked stronger for Flair seeing that he’s been in the biz for 36 years. If I had booking powers for this angle at this point of it I would have Ric come to smackdown and open the show and cut a promo stating that with the winning streak he’s been on he deserves a title shot and a chance to headline WM 24 so he’s on SD to challenge Edge for a shot. Edge come out w/ Vicki and turns down Flair saying that he’s not into wrestling the old man tonight. Flair then reminds Edge that if he beat him, Edge can forever say that he sent Flair packing. Edge then accepts.

On to the match, it’s a good back a forth match until edge gets the upperhand and sets Flair up for the finish(spear) goes for and misses and nails the ref. Flair then takes over the match until Rider and Hawkins come in a work over Flair w/ Edge, then Batista comes out clears out Rider and Hawkins and Batista Bombs Edge. Flair crawls over as the ref comes to 1…2…3! Flair wins. He faces the Undertaker and loses at WM 24 ‘Taker get the belt as Flair leaves but pulls Flair in they do stare down thing and ‘taker strips the belt around Flair’s waist and leaves Flair in the ring to enjoy the moment.

I think it would be a fitting way to see Flair go plus he would have the belt that he made famous as a retirement gift.

I would love to hear your thoughts

All creative, Kirk, is subjective, thus your idea is as good as the next guys. My thoughts on Ric is that too much cannot be done to honor him at this time. Flair being in the main event at Wrestlemania 24 would have been fine to me.

Hi J.R. First time question asker but long time blog reader.
I have a question which I sincerely hope you can answer. Its been playing on my mind now why John Cena is constantly in the spotlight. As a fan from Manchester England, I payed my £15 for the Royal Rumble, and it was a great PPV until the Rumble match itself. Number 30 came out and it was Cena. I was so disappointed to see him not only enter but win it. Why is this? I dont understand why Cena is being forced down our throats so much, its tiring, thats why I think people boo him. If Triple H or Cena came back after 2 years out they would win the Rumble, then title no problem, yet a great superstar like Chris Jericho (who I have been a loyal fan of since his WCW days) comes back and is instantly suppressed into a story line involving Mr Backstage Bully himself JBL. Why cant Y2J be treated and elevanted as such like Triple H and Cena? Please answer this for me, but I can understand if you dont.

I feel your pain, but don’t have an answer. Jericho seems happy to me and I assure you if he wasn’t he would pack his bag and go home. As far as Cena goes, there is nothing more I can say to address the matter as it relates to how some fans feel about John. Nonetheless, thanks for staying up late and watching the Rumble as most fans thought it was a solid show.

Hey JR,
I know that you’re obviously a huge old-school wrestling fan, and I was wondering if you had a chance to check out one of Matt Classic’s matches/promos in WSX (rip). Considering you guys have his alter ego under contract, how would you fancy seeing him unleash his deadly catch-as-catch-can stylings in a WWE ring, and do you think mainstream fans would catch on?

JR and The King are my favorite announce team ever, and I’ve been watching wrestling for 40+ years. But I have noticed a shift in tone over the years for all announcers, and it is one that I don’t like. I miss the days of the true Heel Announcer. You know, the guys who never saw a foreign object in their life, who defend the most vile behavior from the heels in the ring, and who ridicule the faces mercilessly.

I’m from Memphis, so I know that when The King really gets his heel on, there are few better at it. I’d love to hear more of that from him on the color commentary.

Many fans feel the same way. The business changes on many fronts including the announcing.

j.r., college football question, how do you think bo pelini will do in guiding my big red? do you think it was a good hire for nebraska? thanks!

I spoke with Bo in Vegas, as we were both there for the Pavlik fight a few weeks ago. He is a helluva football coach and his recruiting went really well for the time he had to devote to it. Bo’s teams will play hard and will be fundamentally sound. I think he will do a super job and will blow Callahan’s contributions away, much sooner than later. I know Bo is excited about igniting the Big Red legacy and I am pulling for him to be a success. College football needs the Nebraskas of the world to be strong. Pelini will accomplish this in Lincoln.

Dear Mr. Jim Ross,
I’m a big fan of your hall of fame broadcasting and WWE.
Any way, what are your thoughts on the Big Show returning to the WWE? I noticed late 7007-early 2008 is almost the period of returning superstars, such as Chris Jericho and JBL (as an active wrestler). Looking forward to his feud with Floyd Mayweather.

Main Event depth is an issue in the business and getting a top guy back like the Big Show is a good thing for the WWE. I am also anxious to see the Mayweather vs. Show match at WM24 as I don’t know what to expect and I like that.

My question is, Is the Fan access on the day before open to anyone who shows up or do you have to procure tickets in order to meet the WWE Stars, I would be absolutley thrilled If I could meet my life long Hero, Shawn Michaels,
I have to say in closing, Your commentary on any match makes the match a hell of a lot better, thank you for all the great matches that you have called throughout the years

JR, I’ve sent a few comments most recently last week and I never get a response. Not saying this because I’m bitter or holding a personal grudge against you, but after reading Dana’s post, I’d like to throw my 2 cents in.

*sighs*
Please understand I’m not a “conspiracy nut”. I’m totally open to the fact that however sad it may be, Chris Benoit could have killed his child, wife, and himself. Though there are some contradictions in the report that need to be addressed. Even Rob Van Dam and Johnny Lee Clary have both said they believe he is innocent. Either way, regardless of if he IS guilty, it still wasn’t him. Being an evil, heartless, sadistic monster is one thing, snapping when your brain has turned to that of an Alzheimer’s patient is another. You don’t become the Michael Jordan of your sport, have respect from your fans and co workers alike from being a horrible person. I miss Chris Benoit, and I always will.

I too miss the Chris I knew so well, which was not the man who allegedly killed his family. All of us can continue to write about this horrible incident for years to come and most likely will never come to grips with it nor will we be able to answer all the questions that arise every time this subject is addressed.

sorry jr, you may disagree but jbl is the better announcer. you may be better technically but jbl is way more entertaining. you once said that the show isnt about the announcers, its about the performers, but i think you are wrong, th ewhole purpose of the show is nothing but to entertain the fans, which jbl does very well, you may not like his comedy but it entertains and it once eve made me sit through an entire sylvan vs vito match, just to hear him announce and humiliate cole. sorry again but at the end of the day, its all about putting the E in wwe

I don’t recall Eddie ever saying I did not like JBL’s announcing, but to the contrary he was damned entertaining. Not only that, there have been other announcers better than yours truly. But I do agree with the fact that the show is designed to entertain its viewers and none of the content should be the cause for angst or long term frustration.

When I hear about Shawns knee’s not being 100% I worry that in 20 years we’re going to see Michaels wheeled out in a chair for some HOF ceremony. Same with Rey, amazing career but I worry that with all these injuries in 10 years is he going to be able to live a normal life after wrestling?

Just wondered what your view was.

I think that in the WWE that steps have been put in place to better monitor the wrestler’s health, which makes me feel better about the general health of the athletes. Every wrestler needs to monitor their health, as we all do, and take advantage of all the medical advances that our world currently provides. Plus, there is no reason why most wrestlers in today’s WWE should not be able to have long careers, 10 years plus, and earn enough money to provide a significant measure of long term security. Some guys however never seem to know when enough is enough and unfortunately don’t have the self discipline to prepare for life after wrestling.

JR, I personally have always enjoyed your commentary and I enjoyed the commentary that you did at No Way Out. Your new style that you have adapated to fit the presentation of the WWE reminds me alot of how Gorilla Monsoon use to let the action call itself when he would commentate, while every once in a while drawing attention to a significant spot that was happening in the ring, and I personally prefer that style more than listening to someone who tries to call every single move in a match, because it can get annoying at times. In closing I would just like to say keep up the good work, because no matter what changes you have to make to your commentary style to make it more suitable for WWE, you’ll always be one of the greatest commentators of all time.

- Dwayne

It has been said that when it comes to commentary that "less is more."

J.R. Says

Martin Marshall

Hi J.R., love the new format and the content’s great as always. I enjoyed reading your (obviously heartfelt) comments on Gorilla Monsoon the other day. As far as I’m concerned, Gorilla and the Brain were absolutely the most entertaining good guy-bad guy announcing duo of all time. On the subject of announcing, what do you think of the following competition idea? WWE could make available on WWE.com a video of a match with no commentary. People could then record their own commentary on to the match - it shouldn’t be too hard for lots of people to get the right technology these days - and upload it to the site. Perhaps you and the King could judge them and the best could win a prize - calling a (non-televised) match live, for example. I’m sure this would be a lot of fun, and a lot of fans might realise that it’s not as easy as it might seem!

Interesting idea…..perhaps the WWE could find some new announcers using this method. It would be fun in all seriousness.

Hey Jim,

I’m a big fan of yours. I think you are one of the very best of all time @ calling a professional wrestling event!

I was reading your latest blog - seems to be too many “smart” fans (I use the term “smart” rather loosely, mind you) are taking all of the fun out of wrestling.
First and foremost - this is entertainment. These guys put on a show to entertain people. There are so many factors that go into why a wrestler blows up in to a huge phenom (like Cena, Bautista) and wrestling talent is only a portion of this. It also takes charisma, mic skills, and good writing/build up & maybe most importantly timing. People should just sit back, watch & enjoy the product (or don’t - whatever)and stop ruining it for the more casual people (like me) who remember wrestling fondly from childhood & watch this stuff to be entertained. (and we don’t take it so seriously)

Anyways - my question.

I loved Bill Goldberg (more with WCW then with WWE- sorry)

I know - not the greatest wrestler, poor mic skills, attitude, etc.
But in my opinion, had some of the most devastating moves ever (Hello Jackhammer & NO ONE does a spear like Goldie) & a ton of charisma. When he kept his talking in the ring (and off the mic) - no one has ever brought the “real” intensity like that man. Any chance WWE will release a DVD of Bill’s career?

I think it is an interesting idea. I can’t and don’t’ speak for the WWE, but there are still a lot of Goldberg fans out there that would likely buy the DVD. If Bill would participate in it, the DVD could be a big hit.

Sup Jim, Long time wrestling fan- maybe 17+ years. I love the business loads. Currently with Raw, they have so much star power but not enough time to book them- i know kennedy for example will get his time soon but it seems his push seems derailed lately due to the ric flair retirement angle (no doubt deserves a last push does the legendary Naitch) and there being so much going on on raw, stars are being lost in the shuffle. I feel that King Booker, Kurt Angle And Christian jumping to TNA is not only good for them and tna but for WWE as well. With so much main event talent especially on raw people were sadly going to be lost in the shuffle. Undertaker is awsome and i love his new siq submission. I would say shawn michaels was my all time favourite, but lately his new “edgey” character and look just doesn’t make me believe that ol HBK is gonna win the title one more time. Favourite wrestlemania match for me has to be Wrestlemania 19 Shawn Michaels Vs Chris Jericho second place would be Kurt Angle Vs Shawn Michaels. Two awsome matches no doubt. Very hard to watch wrestling here in the uk if you don’t have cable tv as all wrestling is on pay tv over here. I love joey styles- OMG! Catfight! lol joey and you would make an excellent combo- just you a legend and joey probally knows more moves than any other announcer- my favourite commentary comes from you and joey and king at wrestlemania when mick foley V edge. I also like coach and ennjoy his commentry lol. Keep up the good work and hope you call the next 20 mania’s.

With Respect- Dean Morris

I don’t know if I have 20 more Wrestlemanias in me Dean, but I damn sure have one more!

Hey J.R,
Firstly as a longtime wrestling fan in Australia I’d like to tell you how pleased I am that you guys are now making reasonably regular visits to our country.
I heard a while back that WWE was expanding globally and that Sydney, Australia was one of the places you guys were going to set up offices. I was just curious as to whether there would be a chance of an official merchandise store in the county (Like Niagra falls, etc) as WWE merchandise is pretty hard to come by when its not online.
By the way, can’t wait till you guys can start sending some BBQ sauce and beef jerky our way!

We have shipped our Bar-B-Q and Jerky products to Australia from our site. If the WWE opens an office in your country you can bet that there will be plenty of marketing opportunities as a result.

Hello JR!
Just got a quick question for you, has the undertaker officialy ever tapped out ????? On July 4, 2002 Smackdown! Kurt angle made the undertaker tap while getting pinned. Technicaly udnertaker only hit the ground once b4 the 3 count but the match was declared a Draw. SO does that mean undertaker officialy tapped out? has the undertaker ever tapped out? Thank you mr.jr

I honestly do not recall. Can any one help us with this one? If I was forced to answer I would say no.

RAW because it is the longest established and reaches the largest cable audience which is where the most PPVs are sold.

I was just after your thoughts on Howard Finkle. Its a shame we do not get to see him announce on a regular basis. what is his status with the company now and is there a chance we’ll be seeing him in the Hall of Fame at some point? Thank you for your thoughts

Fink is a classic and gets my vote, if I had one, for the Hall of Fame in 2009. No one in the WWE is a more dedicated employee than Howard Finkle.

Hey JR,
I am a big fan of japanese wrestling. The crowd is sepcial too and that’s one of the reasons why I would love to see a Wrestlemania in Japan. But my question is, why did the WWE never push a japanese wrestler to one of the top stars? I really liked Tajiri and I think he was very entertaining and talented. Maybe he wasn’t big enough to be a world champion. He could at least be a great Intercontinental champion.
Now, if you look at some of the japanese promotions, you’ll find so many great athlets. I think one of the best is Hiroshi Tanahashi. I think someone like him could be a great WWE Superstar. I would love to hear you opinion on a japanese wrestler as a main eventer in the WWE.

Much love and respect from Germany

In my experience in the business, most Japanese wrestlers who could wrestle in main events didn’t for extended lengths of time because of their inability to verbalize in a stereotyped business where Japanese were usually looked at as villains and where talking is pretty much essential for most star wrestlers.

J.R. Says

Hey JR, I have a couple of questions:
1. How closely does the WWE track the ratings and are there ever noticeable reactions to changes (up and down)?

2. When Undertaker retires, whenever that may be, do you think he will continue on screen as a manager (or perhaps something else)? Maybe like his role during the early weeks of the Ministry.

Throughly.

Taker doesn’t strike me as "manager material" but I do think he will have a role within the WWE for as long as he chooses to have one.

J.R. Says

Hi JR I got to ask you a question. How do people respond to the Hornswoggle storyline and his push in the company? I heard that not many people like it and I mean in the internet forums I read they are tearing the story a new one by blaming the WWE for giving the fans this crappy storyline to the WWE should fire him on his ass. I just wanna know how is the crowd normally when they they react to Hornswoggle in the ring?

The crowds at Raw on Monday nights seem to like Hornswoggle much more than I ever envisioned that they would. The Hornswoggle storyline is a unique one that obviously isn’t for every one.

Hello Jr love reading the blog good fun and interesting opinions being from the UK am interested in your opinions of the new wrestlers from these sores Paul Birchill having watched him both on smackdown pre pirate days and now with what will be a diaster gimmick rehash of the shamrocks why cant he go back to just performing and using a vet like regal as a mouth piece until creative or vince feel paul can cut his own promos, also having seen Harry Smith do you feel he has the goods to snatch the prize that eluded his legendary father

Burchill’s in ring work will over come any storyline issues one might have with his current scenario if Burchill’s in ring work is really good and especially physical. Smith has a chance to be really good, but is another green kid who simply needs time to mature and improve. Does Smith have the tools to be a star? Absolutely.

Hey J.R, thanks for the blog, I check it every day. I was just wondering how WWE contracts are set up. Do superstars sign multi year deals like in other sports? Do the superstars have agents? Thanks again

Multi year contracts are the norm. Many wrestlers use representation to work out the details of their contracts but it seems like more did a few years ago when WCW was in business than do now. Contracts in the WWE are not totally unlike those in other fields of sports and entertainment.

J.R. Says

Scott Davis

Hey JR,

Just wondering if you could clear something up. Do you believe WWE Superstars who are on top of the wrestling world (ie. John Cena) who have the chance to leave pro wrestling in their prime for a career in something more profitable should be obligated to stay in wrestling? I’m saying if wrestling made them big, should they be aloud to just leave when they want, or do they owe it WWE to stay?

I think that once a wrestler fulfills their contractual obligations they should be allowed to work wherever they choose.

J.R. Says

HakuMania

JR..

In the old days, during the Prime Time wrestling and Superstars era the main shows would have the stars taking on jobber preliminaries during their matches. I kinda miss that in the business. Back then the main roster always went out and looked good, while the preliminaries themselves got air time and got to learn a thing or two.

Do you think the WWE will ever go back to the concept of weekly jobbers to showcase the talent of the superstars?

Not likely, although I could live with it if the matches weren’t long epics. However, many fans would probably revolt and check weather on the 8’s if they were fed these one sided affairs on a regular basis.

J.R. Says

Hi J.R.

There’s nothing like the WWE going up to WrestleMania especially now that the SuperBowl of prowrestling is paired with the Hall of Fame ceremony.

I am proud fan from Kansas City which as I’m sure you know is famous for being a Bar-B-Q city. I was wondering what your thoughts were of Kansas City as far as Bar-B-Q goes, wrestling fans/town goes, and as a city in general.

This site is awesome!

Hey JR,

Great site. I scour it every day looking for more thoughts from the Man in the Black Hat.

I couldn’t help but shake my head at the end of that incredible, 5-star match between Shawn Michaels and Jeff Hardy on RAW. And that’s because I got to thinking, Why is it a “rare treat” that we’re given a terrific match like that one? Shouldn’t the main event of RAW and Smackdown be great EVERY week? I understand that there are certain aspects of the shows that need to be used for character development and to push feuds and angles for PPV hype, but I think the first hour and 45 minutes should be used for that. The main event, in my opinion, should always be a well-told story between opposing grapplers that has the fans on the edge of their seats, and sends them home happy and talking about “how much that last match kicked ASS!”

Just a thought. Too often the show ends in a mess instead of displaying that sometimes-forgotten, stripped-down premise of “wrestling”.

Keep up the good work!
A dedicated fan from Saskatchewan,

You are preaching to the choir. Nothing beats a great wrestling match if one is a wrestling fan. Jeff vs. HBK was special but to replicate such a match every week would be challenging.

I really think MR Mcmahon and JBL look so bad at what they did to Hornswoggle,.I know it’s a storyline and all that but my goodness-wouldnt they look better by picking on someone there own size..As far as I’m concern I would think they would rather look like men then the cowars they look like now…Can they even win a match with a person there size and by not cheating? Wonderful message they send out to all the kids in their audience…Little horney is one of the best things to happen to WWE in a while and Finley has become a hero..Shame on Mcmahon And double shame on JBL…

I am sure many people share your feelings regarding Mr. McMahon and JBL much to their delight.

hey jr here is a idea for who should end ric flairs career at wm24 Mick Foley should because back in wcw ric was a booker there and mick foley said in 1 of his books that ric flair told him he would never amount to anything in the business so it would make sense that mick foley the guy who became a huge wwe superstar end the career of the person who said he wouldn’t become a star in the 1st place?

I thought it had been established that Ric Flair was going to wrestle Shawn Michaels at WM24 and who said definitively that Ric was going to lose?

J.R. Says

hey boss…

You truly are a fan, and it shows in your broadcasting, and for that, I thank you. My question: How important is it to the WWE to acquire talent form other organizations? (i.e.:Chris Harris and maybe Samoa Joe in April?) Besides the obvious ratings boost it will give, is it harder for outside talent to adapt to the WWE “way of life”, rather than talent brought up in the WWE system? Or is it similar?

All new comers adapt to the system, which is as it was when I came to the WWE in 1993 after being in the business almost 20 years. I’m not so big on the "obvious ratings boost" aspect of a new talent coming aboard as I would have been 10 years ago. The WWE seems to be more involved in developing new, young wrestlers in their Florida training facility than waiting on an established wrestler’s contract to expire.

J.R. Says

Brandon H

Hey J.r,

My name is Brandon, of course. I’ve been a wrestling fan since I was 3 months old and I’ll be 22 in April.. I miss seeing The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin.. I know The Rock is doing different things and so is Austin. But, do you think, yall (The WWE) gave Hogan quote un quote “ONE MORE MATCH” against HBK at a PPV. How come yall (The WWE) will not pay the Money to have one last feud, one last match. Between The Best of The Best, The ones who made the Attitude Era, besides DX. The Great ONe, The Peoples Champion vs. The Toughest Son of A Bitch, The Texas Rattlee Snake. The Rock v Stone Cold Steve Austin… Head lining one more time at a Wrestle Mania.. How come that is not in the works. Please tell me…. Is Vince to damn cheap to do that???? HUH??

Like me Brandon you need to discover "spell check" on your computer and secondly Rock vs. Austin has nothing to do with money as neither has an interest in wrestling another match, which isn’t a crime the last I looked.

Hi JR,

I just watched the Flair/Funk “I Quit” match for probably the fifteenth time and I just have a question. A couple of times during the match Gary Hart seems to go over to the announce table to talk to Gordon Solie. Was there a reason for this or am I reading too much into it?

No reason that I recall other than Gary being a "bad guy" and perhaps trying to "intimidate" Gordon. I loved the experience working with "The Dean" on that show.

May I offer a suggestion to everyone who complains about Cena? Boo him. That’s all I have to say. He’s never been like Hulk Hogan (say your prayers.. eat your vitamins). He’s just Cena. I haven’t been a huge fan of his since he debuted and came out doing his “diss raps” or whatever. But I’m still entertained by him. All I’m saying is: Wether people like him or hate him, he’s doing his job by getting a reaction.Amen Brother!!

Also, Since it’s getting to be that time of year. What was your favourite Wrestlemania to call? Sorry if you’ve answered that already.

The Restaurant airs the regular TV shows but remember we close at 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday. We were airing the WWE PPVs, but have stopped which I have explained previously. We tried the PPVs but it just did not work in our place as it would in a sports bar or a blast zone. Thanks a bunch for coming in and I am pleased that you had a great experience.

Hey JR, really impressed with this website, not many people in the wrestling business (or any business) have such a personal website as this, and even fewer have one as unbiased as this one.

Anyway, moving on…

My question is what is going on with the cruiserweight championship? If you look back on it’s history, it’s filled with amazing matches, including ones featuring Rey Mysterio and Dean Malenko, but the last I heard of it Hornswoggle had won the belt in a match he wasn’t even announced as being a part of. Slight confusion all round, I feel.

Also I wanted your opinion on something championship related… many wrestling mags and websites have recently been writing about the idea of unifying some of WWE’s championships. For example US vs Intercontinental champs to make it one belt (much like WWE did with the intercontinental and Europeon titles back in the day). Just wondered what your thoughts were on this issue, as it seems as though championships don’t mean as much as they used to.

The cruiserweight title could always be revived, but it certainly seems to be on life support as we speak. I look for it to fade away into the sunset…unfortunately.

First, I justed wondered when OU’s spring practice is and if you know. Second, Jermie Calhoun seems like the real dealand I can’t wait to see him. Next, gotta hand it to Satan-I mean Saban. He stole Julio Jones right from our grasp. Can’t wait to visit the Restaurant again this Summer. Take care and my best to your family and friends.

The Sooners start spring practice the first week of March and then will break for the traditional spring break and then finish up the spring with the Red-White game on April 12. Calhoun is a big time RB but so is Justin Johnson, who has already enrolled and will be participating in spring ball. Julio decided to stay home, which surprised no one here, but OU signed 3-4 big time receivers any way. I talked to Coach Stoops recently and he is really excited about the potential of this year’s squad with so many key players returning. The schedule is tougher than last year, but that’s just the Big 12.

JR someone made a comment a couple of weeks ago that they love when you talk about other sports as well and I agree with that person……. First and foremost your a wrestling mastermind…….I would like to know what your thoughts are on who the greatest heavyweight boxer is, middleweight and etc. etc……… Like quick questions what is your thought on the great battle between Sugar Ray Leonard & Marvelous Marvin Hagler……. I know you’ve seen that match once……. what were your thoughts on the outcome because I feel Hagler was robbed but like The Rock Sugar Ray was The People’s Champ…..

From my personal perspective and my personal relationship with him, I would be hard pressed to name any other heavyweight than Muhammad Ali for a variety of reasons notwithstanding his ability to talk and to sell tickets. Can’t disagree that Hagler looked to have won the fight in question as Leonard was the darling of the game at that point in time, which is not to say that Ray wasn’t an awesome fighter. Boxing judges have always fascinated me and not in a good way. Mayweather, Jr is the best pound for pound boxer in today’s game especially when he comes to work and wants to actually throw and not simply jab and move.

Hey JR, just placed an order for a bottle of JR’s BBQ sauce. Hopefully it will live up to the hype! Question for you, How do you feel about the US and IC titles being kind of pushed aside as of late with MVP and Jeff Hardy not really defending their titles on TV or PPV’s? This especially seems evident with Jeff Hardy who will be in his 2nd main event on a PPV and since the IC title defense against Orton before the Rumble hasnt really been defending the belt at all.

Both IC, U.S. and the ECW titles could be positioned to mean more and hopefully they will in time. Titles with no "sizzle" are almost worth not having. The two tag team titles are almost invisible.

Hey Jim. I will be purchasing No Way Out as I find myself buying most PPV. I really enjoy watching them and love your HOF worthy commentary and can’t believe how many individuals seem to complain after every PPV without good reason. It is easy to complain after the event which always leaves me with the question, If you don’t like the product, stop buying it. But you know the free speech thing, gotta love it. I live near Toronto Canada and am very glad to see Raw coming back to the hanger(ACC). I have attended most Raw and Smackdown shows including SNME, Summerslam(2 rows behind you on my Bday) and Unforgiven. Anyways I have never contacted you as you seem so busy but have a question that I do not believe you have been asked or at least I could not find record of if. I am really into the production and behind the scenes of wrestling and was wondering if you have heard if WWE will be producing a DVD documenting more of the behind the scenes of the company such as set design and assemble, show preparations, production trucks and wwe headquarters, wardrobe, etc.. Would be an awesome purchase. Also what exactly it the roll of a WWE referee other than the obvious. I can see that they wear a ear piece so I would imagine directors are feeding them info on match timing, calling the action, etc. If you could shine some light on the subject would be really appreciated.
Thanks again Jim and have a great show in Vegas. Also if you need any mugs, etc. for your stores, drop me a line or visit my website. Would be an honor doing business with you.

I have not heard of any "behind the scenes" DVDs on tap, but that doesn’t mean they are not on some one’s drawing board. Some of the referees only referee bouts while others are also members of the the ring crew.

Greetings, good ol’ J.R.

I really feel that WWE Home Video have produced some excellent DVD releases over the years i.e. Rise + Fall of ECW, Ultimate Ric Flair Collection, Shawn Michaels: From the Vault, Mick Foley’s Greatest Hits + Misses, Hulk Hogan: Ultimate Anthology, Self-Destruction of Ultimate Warrior, and the stories of Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero. I was really excited to hear that WWE were planning on releasing DVDs chronicling the careers of Randy Savage and Sting, and was naturally very disappointed when the plug was pulled on both projects. I could understand why for Sting, given that he’s currently under contract to TNA, but why the Macho Man?

I know that Vince McMahon reportedly has heat with him, but if he could put aside his issues/make ammends with Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart to honour them with DVD releases and Hall of Fame inductions…why can’t he do the same with the Macho Man? I know I don’t know anything about the circumstances, but for Savage’s legacy to fade away into obscurity would be tragic in my eyes.

I am not fully aware of the backstory of why the McMahon-Savage relationship has apparently gone south but it looks as if it is going to remain there for the foreseeable future. Plus, I have never heard if Savage is remotely interested in participating in a DVD project with the WWE. Seems as if the Savage ship has sailed.

Hey JR,
First off, I’m a big wrestling fan but when a topic comes up regarding Chyna, it always seems very negative. It almost seems like you don’t want her to succeed in life.

I think Celebrity Rehab is a GREAT show. In fact, if this show would go head to head with RAW, it will destroy RAW in the ratings and that’s just my opinion even though it’s 2 different shows.

New Japan should hire Chyna. Guys should wrestle against the woman? I mean, it’s nothing different from what WWE is doing with Hornswoggle. Isn’t this sport entertainment? You can actually sit there and say that Chyna WASN’T entertaining to watch?

I would watch her over Kahlie ANY DAY of the week.

And let’s be very clear, I am not a GO CHYNA fan. I’m a wrestling / Sports entertainment fan. Some of the guys you have now will never reach the success Chyna has made.

That’s not an overly intelligent response and certainly isn’t true.

I would love to make a wager on this bold prediction. I watch Celebrity Rehab too for the record.

I never said Chyna wasn’t entertaining but I still don’t feel women should wrestle men no matter how big or jacked up the woman may be.

That would be "Khali".

I don’t have any "guys" now but you are correct when you say that some current wrestlers will never achieve her notoriety. So now have a De-Cafe and lighten up Francis.
