Angry Responses to last Blog...Hodge Appearance a Huge Success...Strikeforce...Dwayne Johnson

Apparently my last blog struck a chord with some wrestling fans who are not pleased with the wrestling product that they see on TV and are willing to express their displeasure of said product and of my remarks. We received a handful of comments, of which I took the time to read, and I have some thoughts regarding them. Plus here are some other random thoughts from the weekend....

Firstly, I enjoy reading fans' emails and attempting to get a handle on the pulse of what some loyal wrestling fans are thinking and to what they are responding. I assume that I under estimated some folk's passion for the product when I read so many emails that are overtly negative about the content of the wrestling TV shows that they see. I am not advocating that any one bail on the product but some emails I receive indicate some disgruntled fans have encountered sleepless nights, loss of appetite and all sorts of maladies after watching a wrestling TV show because of their displeasure of what they just viewed. To those people, if watching any TV show adversely affects them in a non healthy way my suggestion was that they should re-think why they are watching said program. I am not above saying that I am always right on these blogs either but at least people get honesty here. So I stand corrected. Watch whatever you choose and react however you want.  However, venting to me over program content in our Q&A section is fruitless and a waste of time for all of us. I cannot affect any change to the content and I really don't want the Q&A's to turn into a more negative than not aspect of the site. So please continue to send what you choose to the Q&A section and I will scan through them and will delete items that are overly negative, distasteful, or have already been addressed. Plus, I won't tell you want to watch or not going forward. Fair enough?

I think that because some fans think that because I am an announcer on Friday Night Smackdown that I am involved in the creative process and can impact creative changes. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I do not attend creative meetings, none are held in Oklahoma at JR's Family BBQ, and the complete and total extent of my creative involvement is to make an occasional suggestion if I think that I have a good idea which is quite infrequent. Some emails you never see are in attack mode from the get go at me personally because I don't change things some fans don't like. Those emails are read and deleted without problem but there is a general misconception of what my role these days is with the WWE.  Hopefully this helps clarify the matter.

The Dan Hodge book signing Saturday afternoon at our BBQ joint in Moore, Oklahoma was a huge success. Dan and author Mike Chapman sold many books, "Oklahoma Shooter:The Dan Hodge Story" which I recommend that you check out. It's a fascinating read of another era of the business and of sports in general. Great photos throughout and it really speaks to some of wrestling and boxing's greatest stars from a man who knew them personally. Lou Thesz once said that the two toughest men he ever faced were Dick Hutton and Dan Hodge, both former NCAA Champions. Thesz was trained in "wrestling hooking" and had significant submission skills. Thesz lost to Hodge in a notable match in 1968 in Japan that, in the big picture, ranks as one of the more significant bouts in pro wrestling history that many folks never saw or heard of. I asked Dan, who dearly loved and had huge respect for Thesz if Dan could have beaten Lou back in the day in a real match and Dan without question respectfully said yes. Dan explained Lou's hooking style and his dangerous overhand wrist lock that was debilitating and dangerous and that Lou had tried Dan on more than one occasion just to see how Hodge would react. This is not a 76 year old man speaking out of turn about one of his idols but a man who simply  thinks he could have beaten the great Lou Thesz but said so with reverence, respect and reluctance. In his prime, there is no one in the wrestling business today or in my career that Hodge could not have beaten if the chips were genuinely down. Trust me on that one.

The Strikeforce TV deal should put the group a solid #2 behind the UFC and now it is incumbent on Strikeforce to produce exciting shows and develop new stars. I wonder if there is any chance that Strikeforce could sign Fedor to a multiple fight deal if Fedor was contractually available. CBS TV exposure is big for this group as is Showtime for that matter but now that the wagon has been tied to the horses it is time to load said wagon.

I will be doing more THQ video game voice overs in a couple of weeks here in Norman. As I said the storylines in this game are more involved that I can recall in the past but the over lying issue of the game is the increased physicality of it. I think some mistake a PG TV rating as factoring out physicality and that's not the case in my view but it does eliminate HLA type moments which shouldn't offend any true wrestling fan. I am anxious to see if the THQ trend continues with the next collection of copy.

Some friends have asked me about where Friday Night Smackdown will be produced during the week leading into WM25 and I still don't know. My assumption is that SD will be produced down in Houston which adds another live event for the fans who travel to Houston for WM25 week to attend. Sounds like a cool event for Axxess. Hopefully that matter will be made known to us all sooner than later so every one can plan.

Yours truly exchanged emails with Dwayne Johnson at the Super Bowl and we wanted to hook up but his schedule and mine just would not allow it. He is really excited about his next film "Return to Witch Mountain" and the movie trailer looks great. Dwayne has been wise beyond his years in the movie roles that he has selected all of which will seemingly have long shelf lives and be family friendly for years to come. I hope to hook up with the former Miami Hurricane this fall when Oklahoma travels to Miami to play "The U." I am profoundly proud of Dwayne's film success and I'm happy to say that, as it relates to our relationship and that's all that concerns me personally, success hasn't changed the "Great One" one bit.

Did you know that Andy Kaufman used to sneak into Memphis in the dark of the night back in the day when Andy had his big wrestling feud with Jerry Lawler and that Kaufman based out of referee Jerry Calhoun's home to avoid the media and the hostile fans who wanted to lynch the controversial comedian? Media used to stalk out King's Memphis home to see if they could catch a glimpse of Kaufman sneaking in to meet with Lawler but those meetings at King's home never occurred much to the dismay of the local and national media.

The Legends Roundtables really seem to h ave struck a chord with many fans. I am getting a ton of feedback regarding these DVD's that have just become available a few weeks ago. So far I have not received one negative email about these unique productions which really take the fans behind the curtain and touch on some here-to-for off limit topics.

I know that my writing isn't Hemingway-esque but apparently I have not made myself clear enough to some who want to work for the WWE in a variety of areas. For creative writing or other corporate roles, you must go through WWE Human Resources unless you have a personal contact already with the company that might be able to set you up with an interview. Then you will still have to go through Human Resources. Secondly if you are looking for work as a wrestler, referee or manager (good luck on that one) you need to send a tape of your work and a resume to Florida Championship Wrestling or visit their school in Tampa. Getting work in the WWE is a daunting task that requires a great deal of determination but the channels by which to facilitate these jobs are what they are. I read with interest many of your emails about desperately wanting to work with the WWE and I truly wish I could help you but they have their employment policies in tact just like any other large, publically traded company.

We are often asked about any Wrestlemania surprises on tap for Houston. First of all and to be totally honest with you I don't know of any at this time and I really don't want to know. I, too, love surprises which are becoming rare in today's pro wrestling world. Many folks who know insider info feel compelled to leak the info to outside sources for reasons beyond me. Can you provide an answer as to why someone would reveal the "end of the movie" to those planning on seeing the "movie" but as of yet have not? Nonetheless if I knew of any surprises why would I reveal them and ruin them for the fans? I think it goes without saying that the WWE will pull out all the stops to make WM25 a success including a surprise or two here and there.

I watched most of the UFC Saturday night on Spike. For some reason I was a little underwhelmed with the broadcast. Not a big knock here but it just did not seem to have the sizzle of other UFC events on TV. This opinion certainly doesn't mean I'm about to bail on the product or the brand. The heavyweight fight I was anxious to see as it relates to a potential Brock Lesnar opponent some day ended strangely and without fanfare. I don't disagree with the ending but it felt very abrupt.

The highlight of Friday Night Smackdown was the two segment main event featuring HHH/Undertaker vs. Edge/Big Show that closed the broadcast.  Hopefully other talents of the brand will rise up and make sure that they are noticed no matter their role on the show. I read an interview with Ric Flair recently where he said that the best advice he was given as a young wrestler was to take is 3-4-5 minutes of TV time and show every one why he was special. Trust me, it can be done and every second a talent is provided on TV is important no matter the talent's role. It just seems to me, and this is a personal opinion, that some talents sense of urgency need to increase.

I am not exempt from this critique either. Competitively I want Friday Night Smackdown to get better and rival the #1 WWE TV program, Monday Night Raw, and I am going to do all I can in my role to provide better story telling and help the Smackdown team be more successful.

Thanks for your support of our website and for shopping with us. The shopping for our product's helps keep this site a float. There are only two of us who provide any creative content here and one is the webmaster who is overloaded with simply keeping things running. We all do the best we can and I try to get to many of your emails as best as I can. Please keep them succinct and refrain from best you can from duplicating the same questions that you have read before on the site. Bottom line, thanks a million for stopping by. I hope to see some of you in Fresno Tuesday night.

I seen on her that someone said that the rock is a sell out. I guess that person doesn't know anything. He to the opportunity to better his life and knew when to leave the business that his family help shape. He wanted to make sure he was able to do something without any injuries preventing him from not being able to do it in pain. So whoever said he is a sell-out put urself in his shoes and i bet u would do the same thing.

                          FIGHT ON!

Awful lot of complaints after only one appearance.

please.....i know he left for a rival company.....but don't "punish" Christian too long. He is like Edge- a great wrestler who deserves to break the WWE Championship ceiling. Edge finally got his chance, and look at him now. If you let Christian wrestle as a WWE/World Heavyweight champ, as a main-event player, the WWE will see that he is 5-star quality. Much love J.R.

Is it possible that Christian could be on his way to pulling a HAT Trick. Win the ECW, WWE and World Championship at the same time? Or is he just providing star power to ECW?

I sit and watch ECW and like the young up and comers on the show but still don't get intrigued by the product. I don't know if it is the storylines or what but I can only handle Finlay and Mark Henry main event  so many times.  I would hate to see Christian get lost on the show.

Christian's WWE debut last night on ECW was weak, where was Vince yelling into Grisham's ear piece to sell it, all he says is its Christian, no emotion and Stryker goes I'm speechless, Mick Foley was so much better at commentary than those two buffons, and he got yelled at!! I hope Vince gave both of those morons 30 lashes when they got to the back. last night, they made Don West look good and thats hard to do.

A few people have been commenting on the decision to put Christian on ECW. I for one love it. I think by having Christian appear on ECW, WWE is giving their programing a sense of unpredictability, as they always have in the past, in addition to increasing the credibility of the ECW brand with a top player like Christian. Do you think WWE made the right move, JR?

Look i love wrestling even though its back in that era where its again not the "cool" thing to watch i didnt care before and i dont care now i love what you guys do no matter what.  Now that said i normally never question what you guys to beyond my own internal debate, because the WWE usually makes me eat my words at some point you did it with Jeff Hardy when i thought it was taking to long for him to get into a real program and it also happened with Edge when i thought he should have been getting a really huge push (in my opinion hes the best in the biz at the moment in all aspects)  i think i ate my words on Edge within 2 weeks and i know if Vince didnt create it he doesnt like to use it and maybe im just over reacting but hes one of my all time favorite wrestlers and i just cant sit by this time. Putting Christian on ECW is by far one of the biggest bonehead moves ive ever witnessed its gotta be right up there with the gobbly gooker and bastion booger and thats not on christian hes one of the top talents in wrestling and because he made a name for himself in TNA you guys are going to bury him on ECW i love all you guys an J.R. youre the best annoucer ever but you guys need to get over yourselves and open your eyes (pun intended) to the talent you have in Christian.  Now im not bashing these guys but Christian is way out of Swagger, Kingston and Kozlovs ( at the moment they all do have great potential)  leagues i do think that Christian and Jack will have an amazing match for the title whenever that may be especially from what i saw last night but Christian is much better than ECW and Todd Grishman really ruined  the return for me i usually really enjoy listening to Todd and Matt Striker because theyre a nice change of pace and are getting better every week i thought they did great at the royal rumble but there was no emotion during his return which really left it feeling stale. Christian deserves better now maybe he shouldnt necessarily be put in a main event program right away but hes just as popular as Jeff Hardy if not more so(IMO) especially given the fact that Jeff did the same thing comeing back from TNA i really think that Vince or whoever is making this decision needs to get their head out of their ass and get over themselves the fans dont care we just want to see Christian given the shot he deserves, now if you guys do have something up your sleeves than ill be the first to come back here and apologize for my rant  and i really hope i have to do that at some point, now that said its great to see Christian back on televison even if its not the place or situation i was wishing for but hopefully thatll change.  J.R. you are the man keep up all the great work with everything not just the annouceing, i hope to see a new Roundtable soon.

JR,

Of all the places to put a star like Christian Why do you think they put him on ecw, with a meaningless program. In your opinion why not raw or smackdown.

Mike

Love the blogs JR., also a big fan of bbq so this is the best of both worlds.  On a more serious note, I saw all the weather that is happeneing right now and wanted to say hope both restaurants make it through ok.  Keep up the great work, and the great cooking!

Not that you were actually FISHING for a negative comment about the Legends' Roundtables, but here you go anyway:  Ric Flair named the nWo the worst stable of all time. Ric's made some delusional statements before, but this one (almost) takes the cake.

Charlie?  You mean he's a Viet Cong?

Seriously, I also happen to enjoy Dwayne's film career.  No, he doesn't have the greatest acting chops.  At least, not yet.  But when you think about it, the Rock never had the greatest - no pun intended - moveset either.  Didn't stop him from becoming one of the most enjoyable wrestling personalities ever.  EVER!!!!!!

Arcalian,

I happen to enjoy Dwayne's career as does JR. He's given us a lot over the years and I enjoy that fact that he's trying another art form. It may not be what you enjoy but your comments sounds like a person who finds his/her life...un-satisfying. Lighten up charlie

As per your comment on the UFC match (which I didn't see), I have to say that you are used to wrestling finishes! That's a big part of why I like wrestling more than most sports. To see a blowout (like most years' SUper Bowl) just isn't as fun as a action-filled, interesting wrestling match. Having reread this, I noticed that the first part could be negative, but I didn't mean it that way.

Being the respected culinary figure in the world of bar-b-que that you are (at least in our eyes!), I want to hear what you think about this recipe that's sweeping the internet. I think I may try it sometime this summer, myself.

Hi Jr,

Just wondering if you think there is a strong possibility that Taker will write a book when his career is all said and done. I think that with the success of Bret hart's book, if Taker wrote in a similiar style... it would be an amazing read and a great seller.

I am quite certain that you are not involved creatively with Smackdown.  I wish you were.  Certain things, Jeff Hardy's aborted title reign not least, would have been handled much more intelligently.

Having said that, I am utterly astonished that anyone, least of all you, would believe that Dwayne Johnson's movie carreer has been more than lukewarm.  After his first couple movies, when he was still at least a part-time wrestler, he has faded into the Hollywood equivalent of the mid card and seems stuck there.  Now, you have said--and I beleive you--that he does not want to wrestle again.  It is my impression that this is due to the wear and tear on his body.  I can't blame him for that.  But I find it very hard to beleive that he is so satisfied with this movie career that he wouldn't find it at least as satisfying psychologically and nearly as much so financially, to come back in some kind of General Manager role (as your buddy Stone Cold did for some time) or as the manager of another wrestler.  He might not ever wrestle again, but surely he would get a big kick out of stepping onto a stage and proclaiming "FINALLY....".

I am glad that Johnson doesn't want to come back as a wrestler.  If he did, certain talents I enjoy would get buried that much more.  But that he is happy with his "family friendly" movies?  Um, what?  I missed something.  I was kind of under the impression that you made the family movies after you had several succesfful blockbusters under your belt.  I can't remember any of Dwayne's movies qualifying for that category after his debut in the Mummy franchise.

Please don't take this as any kind of attack, Mister Ross.  I am just honestly stunned at the notion of Johnson's movie carreer being any kind of "satisfying".

(And please, nobody tell me that he didn't go to Hollywood to make the big bucks.  If he wanted to be a "cinematic artist", he'd be making indy films, not Disney formula stuff.)

As for being a disgruntled wrestling fan, I have suffered no physical debilitations over the state of the business.   The Jeff Hardy "storyline" however, has annoyed me to the point where I no longer even watch Raw or Smackdown and merely check the results online.  I doubt I could ever fully stop paying attention to wrestling, but as time goes on I become more and more convinced that I will only do so as a statistician/title history afficionado type.

Hi JR

As a longtime (20 year) fan I watched WWF/E primarily during the so called Golden and Attitude "eras". Since joining the navy Down Under I have had some difficulty watching WWE television over the last few years as I've often been away on deployment. However, I am now ashore and am keen to watch as much WWE as I can. I am particularly excited about the Australian tour in July.
My first question is in relation to the tour, why is it that only the Raw roster is coming here? Whilst I am a fan of Chris Jericho, Batista and co, I would have thought that the Smackdown roster (especially Triple H and Undertaker) would have put more backsides in seats. Are there plans for the Smackdown roster to tour in future?
Additionally does the fact that certain Raw wrestlers have been advertised here already indicate that there will be no WWE draft before July?
I've always been a fan of your commentary and felt that you and King had the best rapport as an announcing team, nothing against the other guys however. Can a reunion of JR and the King be expected in future? And finally a question that you may not be able to answer. WWE owns the name rights to many top stars past and present. So why is it that there is practically no merchandise available for WWE greats such as Mr Perfect, British Bulldog or Bret "Hitman" Hart? Even Hulk Hogan has only a very limited amount of merchandise available on wwe.com yet he would probably be in the top 3 or 5 superstars ever in terms of merchandise revenue. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your time JR.

Reading these comments sees just how involved people like getting into with regards to wrestling (myself included) things are done outside the ring are starting to rub the old shine off my images of the glory days of WWF/WWE, WCW,TNA, etc..

Lately the line between reality and character have been getting blurred and grainy. More and more you are seeing Wrestlers/Sports Entertainers carrying their persona to the real world, sure characters have parts of themselves in them but maybe were better at keeping things out of the light of real day.

Point I'm getting to is the latest is the Attack between Fans and Wrestler Chris Jericho where he was getting jeered harshly after a househow and while driving away got swarmed around his vehicle to where he got out and actually hit a woman and then got in then back out of the vehicle and pushed a man to the ground.

With the 21st cdntury here and moden technology there   were recorded videos of this from cell phones which were promptly put up on every site from newssheets to youtube.

Point of this long comment is that from the video his Y2J persona may have actually done some real damage that the WWE may suffer for (unikely though since Vince Macmahon is a brilliant PR man)

Just finished reading through todays blog update. I paid close attention to the part about the creative process and your involvement with it. I read and realized that I was Q'ing you about something you have no say in. I'm sorry if my Q's were involved in that section and hope that I can continue to ask Q's when I have them without causing a problem. I thank you again for taking the time to answer the first Q I had and aknowledge that you won't have all the answers, and I won't ask any more creative Q's.

You were right in stating that some people need to realize(me included) that the times do change for the new crowd. As much as the old days are missed, we gotta move on, and theres always dvds out of the days we all miss to keep us going.

Sorry again for any trouble my Q's may have caused, and thank you for a page that can answer some of the many Q's we wrestling fans have, WWE or WWF fans alike.

Take care and have a great week.

I'm glad you took the time to read and respond to all the criticism you took over your Q & A, a lot of which had some truth to it. I don't think your response will quell much of the anger directed at you...but at least you acknowledged it.

I'm pretty happy about Strikeforce's TV deal. I too am surprised that the UFC isn't on cable yet, but I guarantee you they're not worried about Strikeforce. The UFC and Strikeforce have a good relationship because Strikeforce generally doesn't try to compete with the UFC-it knows it's a slightly lower-tier promotion and instead tries to get regional audiences in souther California and in Britain where they own Cage Rage.

Ultimate Fight Nights generally aren't as highly quality cards as the PPVs of course, but I'm not sure why you were disappointed. Although Cain Velasquez's fight was sort of lame, 2 lightweight bouts were wonderfully entertaining. The Grice/Veach fight was a back-and-forth 1 round striking war, and Joe Lauzon showed incredible submission skill in tapping Jeremy Stephens. Lauzon will soon rival his training partner BJ Penn in jujitsu skill, I think.

Looking forward to the elimination chamber matches at No Way Out. They were my favorite last year aside from the ladder match and Ric Flair retirement matches at Wrestlemania...partly because of the ridiculous counter the Undertaker pulled off against Batista. With athletic wrestlers like Kofi Kingston, I'm hoping we'll see new and exciting counters that showcase his "hooking" skills and not just his athleticism.

Hey JR, hope you're having a fine Sunday afternoon/evening. I'm not sure if you got a chance to read about or watch the cell phone videos that were put up on youtube after Chris Jericho was harrassed and attacked by fans in Victoria, BC? He retaliated when he realized his arena rent-a-cops weren't going to offer much assistance, and now some people out there actually have the audacity to condemn him for it.

Have you ever experienced fans getting overly roudy, and not being able to separate fiction from real-life?

All creative meetings should be held at JR's Family BBQ in Oklahoma.

Keep up the great work, JR!

Hi JR hope you had a good time at the superbowl. I have been watching Jack Swaggart as he has improved tremendously. He reminds me of one of the old wrestlers back in the day, but can't quite figure out which one. He seems to change a lot if he gets into trouble. He goesback to using good wrestling skills sometimes, and some times he explodes with rage. I think you made a good recomendation this time. Of course I can remember a few good choices as to wrestlers when you were picking some of them.

I enjoy reading your views, Mr. Ross.  You've taken the time to personally answer 3/3 questions I've had in the past, and I don't take it for granted that a public figure spends so much private time communicating one-on-one with the fans.

I was fortunate enough to be a teenager during the Monday Night Wars and Attitude Era, and I can certainly relate to the frustration of watching a "watered-down product."   I also can see in 20/20 hindsight why some adults may have been turned off by all the wrestling clowns, pig farmers and plumbers I watched as a kid.

However, no matter how PG WWE gets, as long as they have talents on the roster like Jericho, Mysterio and Michaels, then true fans should be able to find something about the product to enjoy.  I don't claim to know you, but I gather that you care more about what happens inside the ring than what happens via promos, vignettes, storylines and angles.  Same with me.  If others disagree, then WWE doesn't need to bear the burdeon of 'ruining' wrestling, as there are other promotions available for their viewing pleasure.

Besides, wrestling is cyclical, and if there is a market for something (for example, hardcore violence) then someone surely will cater to it.

Quick tidbit about my defense of pro wrestling:

Some of my friends seem to think that MMA is better just because it is 'real'. Then I dared them to fake falling on their back from a ladder onto another ladder (ie Shelton Benjamin at WM24), they quieted down a little. Then they came with the lame response of 'it's still fake'. Then I told them 'It's not about real or fake, it's about the entertainment. Not like you're participating. I'd rather have 30 minutes of solid entertainment per match, than maybe a 30 second MMA match ending in TKO.' Just wondering how you feel about it.

Love the blogs JR.  You can never please everyone.  As a fan of over 35 years I know the business has ups and downs and varies by every fans taste.  Keep up the good work.  Can't wait to sample the Q in person this year.

WWE going pg doesnt bother me at all, ive been a wrestling fan for 16 years now and i enjoyed the attitude era as much as the next guy but i would rather see pure straight up wrestling

I'm actually quite happy with the shows that the WWE is producing and proud to be a WWE fan at that.
