Austin Checks In...Dr. Death Update...FREE SHIPPING...Finally, a Home Game

Posted in:

Thanks for stopping by and spending a few moments. After being on the road for 10 days, it's great to be home even though the Mrs. is in Pittsburgh to attend her Class Reunion and to see family. So that means I'm on "Cat Patrol" between my other chores which include J.R.'s Family BBQ stops and my Friday morning appearance on KOKH Fox 25's Morning News show with college football predictions. Then it's the OU-Baylor Big 12 opener in Norman Saturday afternoon on ABC.

Oh, yeah...we are still offering FREE SHIPPING on great deals in our on line store here on the site. But wait, there's more...

Got an email from old pal Steve Austin late last night. He's in the UK promoting his next film "Damage" which will be released imminently on DVD. I've seen the trailer and liked what I saw and plan on supporting Steve by purchasing this action packed, fight filled film when it becomes available.  Many Austin fans waited some 13 hours to be a part of a signing there this week. Steve also detailed seeing his first soccer game in person and he told me that he had a blast and had a better understanding and appreciation for the game.

Another old friend, Steve "Dr. Death" Williams is battling cancer again as the deadly disease has returned after Doc had been cancer free almost five years. The cancer is in Doc's Stoma and surgery or radiation aren't options but chemotherapy is. Doc is an amazing man who remains steadfast in his faith in God and his unintimidating stance on beating cancer for a second time. Please say a prayer and think good thoughts about Steve as he once again finds himself in another fight.

There have been some emailers who have the idea that Doc trained Jack Swagger because, I assume, both attended Oklahoma University. Not true.   I saw Swagger wrestle at OU and suggested that he be offered a try out with WWE and he got it and took the opportunity from there. Nonetheless, the WWE or any one else would have been well served to have their athletes be trained or influenced by a man like Dr. Death as there is much more to being a successful pro wrestler than simply what goes on between the ropes.

Hard to believe that there will be another WWE Pay Per View in less than three weeks in Pittsburgh...the home town of not only my soon to be bride of 16 years but also the great Bruno Sammartino who celebrated a birthday earlier this week. I really wish Bruno would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the future if for nothing else for his many, long time fan's to enjoy. Happy belated birthday to one of the all time greats in the business.

75K is the asking price for Ric Flair's coveted NWA World Title Belt? Wow...good luck on getting that number to the party selling the treasure. This is not a positive development in the big picture, at least in my humble opinion, and it quite frankly makes me sad. But it is also none of my business.

I've heard of some big names that are likely candidates to host Monday Night Raw in coming weeks and many are most intriguing. It looks as if WWE is committed to this process of having a guest celeb from some walk of life host the company's top TV priority as an avenue for the host to promote their own products or agendas. I thought Big Ben did a solid job Monday night and from what I was told by those that were in Wilkes-Barre that the Steelers QB and his O-Line had a blast. I would estimate that Roethlisberger signed at least 100 pieces of swag for WWE personnel while he was at Raw. I hope to feed the big QB some JR's BBQ the next time that he's in Norman to see his sister play hoops for the OU Womens Team.

I loved the fact that the King had to enthusiastically endorse the Steelers QB  consider the King is NOT a Steelers fan but a huge fan of the Cleveland Browns. King will also become a fan of Axxess Hollywood and Nancy O'Dell this Monday. :)

Last time reminders.....no, I don't think that ANYONE will ever defeat the Undertaker at a Wrestlemania so please refrain from asking that question. I don't know when Owen Hart will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame but he is deserving in my eyes. I DON'T have a vote for the HOF,  for the record. No, I don't know how long title reigns last but the simple answer is until someone beats the champion without sounding like a wise-ass. Come to think of it, if I did know why would I share that info? I'm just saying.

Football news/thoughts....I expect that QBs Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow will play for their respective teams this weekend with Florida's QB likely to play much more than OU's. Bradford is akin to a MLB pitcher who is returning from an injury to his throwing arm and his status depends on how well his arm responds after throwing in practice this week. I hope Sam gets some reps before OU has to travel to Dallas next week to battle the powerful Texas Longhorns. Tebow should have had adequate time to recover from the concussion that he suffered and he is no doubt be medically monitored to insure his welfare. However playing in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night is a nasty affair.

I invite you to check out my WWE Smackdown blog at http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown/ which is available now.

Also my www.ouinsider.com 7 Points to Ponder blog is free and available at http://ouinsider.com/news/story.php?article=3687.  I'm trying to set a record this weekend for the number of reads on this succinct blog and you can help me by logging on and taking a gander at it especially if you follow football to any degree.

Speaking of football, the specials airing on Showtime re: the old AFL are awesome. Reminds me of what WWE 24/7 Classics on Demand has the potential of producing for years to come.

I'm happy to hear that the early week reports regarding the severity of Rowdy Roddy Piper's illness were erroneous and that Rod is on his way to feeling much better. One of my fondest memories is having dinner at WM25 with Roddy and Ric Flair, among other pals,  and listening to the stories. If a camera had been rolling we would have had "Gold, Jerry, Gold!" Feel better Hot Rod.

Smackdown is a really solid wrestling show this Friday night on the elusive MyNetworkTV featuring Rey vs. Jericho, J-Mo (I'm becoming very hip, DAWG) defending the IC Title against Ziggler, and Batista vs. Punk.  Plus, the Undertaker, the NEW (thanks, Fink) World's Champ speaks about his next title defense.

Ladies, the Ryan Seacrest of WWE, master Todd Grisham is getting married on Saturday October 17 to a wonderful young lady. The nuptials will take place in Pennsylvania before the happy couple honeymoon on some undisclosed island in some undisclosed, warm part of the world. That means my partner will miss one SD taping, gasp, to actually enjoy this important moment in his life. Congrats to the happy couple.

To show you how sick I am, I haven't voluntarily missed a week of TV in 16 years with WWE and none in my WCW days either. That really  deserves a "get a life" type of response. No, I not bragging or wanting to break my arm patting myself on the back as Gorilla Monsoon used to tell people. God, I miss that guy. Which reminds me that I need to find how how Bobby Heenan is feeling.

Remember to take advantage of our FREE SHIPPING in our on line store if you can. We will also be posting some of our new, TV commercials for J.R.'s Family BBQ on the site in the next few days that you might find entertaining.

Be well.

Boomer Sooner!

...and pbanik, you'll have to tell me if you get an order shipped out to you here because orders@jrbarbq.com have finally informed me after a few weeks of trying to figure this out that they are not shipping to Canada or the UK anymore.  Now I don't get to try JR's sauce and beef jerky, or read his cookbook!!

pbanik -- I read your comment and was thinking the same thing about a barbeque place opening here where I'm from.. then you mentioned Schryer's Slow Smoked Barbecue which shocked me because I am from Saskatoon but first used your link to read your article about cancer then your bio and didn't get the impression you were from the prairies.  I'm both a 25 year wrestling fan and a personal friend of Matt's from Schryer's BBQ - amazing coincidence to see you here!  Take care.

Mr. Ross, I posted an article on Dr. Death's MySpace profile regarding his cancer, and also the cancer of Rowdy Roddy Piper and the health of Bobby Heenan. I hope all three of this men have a full recovery. www.examiner.com/x-22249-Columbus-Pro-Wrestling-Examiner~y2009m10d7-Cancer-putting-claw-hold-on-legends is a link with the headline:

Cancer putting claw hold on legends.

I think the exchange rate is getting to a point where I might order something online. That's another factor in when I order. The more favorable the exchange rate is, the more likely I am to order. JR, there is a barbecue place that opened where I live. I can't say it's better or worse than yours, because I haven't ordered anything from yours yet, but I will say it is great. I will try to scan some information like coupons and a menu on MySpace for you when I get a chance.  They are also involved in charity work like Raise A Reader. The URL is http://www.schryersbbq.ca if you want to check it out. I have installed SmartSwipe, so I'm going to test it out. The items I would be most interested in ordering from your website are the autographed items like the hat and your cookbook, which will probably be pretty soon now since the Canadian dollar is appreciating in value against the US dollar lately.  I wish you and all my US friends a great Columbus Day, my Canadian friends a Happy Thanksgiving and the rest of my friends a great day.

Hey JR,

I have all the respect in the world for you. I think that you are such a postive influence in the WWE and that you are a great announcer. I recently just finished Stone Cold's Book. I have much more respect for you now. I knew that you had some insight on Steve Austin but I didn't realize that love and admiration that he had for you. I realize that this sounds like a groupie comment but it's my first time and thank you for being a great announcer and I still miss you and King on Monday nights.

Kellie

Hey JR!

I was one of the lucky fans to meet Stone Cold in London this past Monday. I waited in line for 6 hours, but it was worth the wait as Austin was pure class, signing 2 items and taking pictures with everybody.

He actually exceeded my high expectations of him and proved himself to be a tremendous guy.

He is my all-time hero. Oh Hell Yeah!!!

Hi JR.......

I just watched HIAC this week, which my brother recorded, and I liked the idea that SD had so many bouts.....speaking of HIAC, i think this explains the answer to something that no one understanded which is why the undertaker lost the title at breaking point just so that he, "the creator of HIAC" can win the title properly at HIAC, which actually makes sense.

I have to agree that only one match should be in a cell and not so many...A question that i want to ask is why does Jerico appear so many times on raw. He is being made a fool of and he has more matches there than big show.....

I congrats The Grish on his wedding that wil take place soon...and that his soon to be wife should get her self ready for a few lonely nights, that is if she doesn't travel with him for SD taping and PPV's.....

can't wait to watch SD tonight on MyNetworkTV..a show worth staying at home for on this great weekend.

Boomer to the OU-Sooners!!!!!!

Sounds like Jerry Lawler would make a perfect politician. I've always liked the King, but I prefer him as a heel by far. For him to actually butter up and pander to a Steelers QB when he's a Browns fan is proof this guy will tell anyone what they want to hear.

My best wishes also to the Doc. I wish I could've been at the 108-stitches matchup against Brad Armstrong. Or better yet, the bout he had that very same night, not 4 or 5 hrs after receving those 100 + stitches. My fave match of his that I attended was when he beat Big Bubba Rogers for the UWF title. Of course he won with the Oklahoma Stampede, a running powerslam. But what was so amazing was that as he was running, just before the big slam, he JUMPED in the air holding the 348 lb Bubba. The most powerful guy I've ever seen in a wrestling ring was Steve Williams.

I attended Hell In A Cell this past weekend, and I had a blast. It was one of the shows of recent I ACTUALLY enjoyed and I'm very critical of the business. I battled the early stages of my bronchitis to go. I was just starting to get sick, but I wasn't going to miss out as the neighboring town of Elizabeth used to be one of the big stops for the WWWF back in the day and I finally got to experience Titan in my OWN backyard for the first time since the early 1990's when Vince used to run shows at the Ritz Theater and the Dunn Sportscenter.

But, let me state a few things for the record:

-I am truly and deeply saddened to hear about Dr. Death. He is one of my favorites and knowing what cancer is like after losing my aunt to it in 2001 after she got it again and died 2 days before they were to operate on her again, I really am pulling my prayers together for him, his friends, and his family. Let's hope the Doc beat this cancer like him and DiBiase beat the Freebirds!

OKLAHOMA STAMPEDE!

-The fact that Highspots is selling off that belt is nothing but a goddamn disgrace if you ask me. I know there are debts to be paid, but that belt belongs in a MUSEUM, rather than in the hands of a private collector. Call me a mark, but NONE of us are worthy to possess that belt. It's one thing to hold a belt that a wrestler had like Warrior because so many were made, but this belt was the ONLY belt of the NWA. There were no new ones made, THIS WAS IT.

J.R. from one fan to another, I beg of you to convince Vince to buy the belt. Rather be in his vault with other memorbilia than in the hands of some private collector who'll do God knows what to the belt.

-Also, to you all that read this, keep in mind to keep Captain Lou Albano in your prayers as well. He was recently moved to hospice care and word is is that his health isn't the best. I for one wish him and his family the best and hope for a full recovery of whatever it is he may have.

Bobby "the Brain" Heenan was and is an absolute thrill to listen to. He  was a huge part of my entertainment since the old AWA days . If anyone wants to see how good a manager can cut a promo just go on youtube and find old promos of him and Bockwinkel ripping apart their future opponents. Absolute classics!!! PS , how's that ham and egger Bockwinkel doing these days JR? I heard he's recovering from something quite serious. Later on. #2 bbq saucemaker Chris Melsted.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding... although I must say a 16yr old is young even for a celeb like yourself. Who are you, Woody Allen? ;)

Sorry, please excuse me... just being facetious over semantics... it's one of those days. All the best, JR!

Have you ever spent time on the road with Sir Oliver Humperdink? Why do you think his name never comes up when talking about all time great managers?

ds

 JR,

Please post about Mr. Heenan once you do find out if it is news that he doesn't mind having shared with the general public.  I would check in on his website from time to time, but it's no longer around.  He's one of the reasons why I enjoyed wrestling so much as a kid.  Nothing beat the Brain and Gorilla on Monday nights.  I've enjoyed seeing him in recent times when he feels up to it because even though the body may fail him physically at times, it seems like the quick wit and incredible sense of humor is still there and I wish him nothing but the best.
