Bar-B-Qed Feedback.. Jerky Has No Carbs.. NE Pats.. Urban Myths=Fertilizer.. Eagles CD is Big Time.. The Great Muta.. Abdullah

As you can tell, our webmaster has been doing a tremendous amount of work on this site and we appreciate everyone’s patience. Just as in life sometimes, one has to take one step backwards to take two steps forward. Be sure and check out all the great, new things that you can purchase and have delivered right to your door in time for the holidays – or for any gift giving occasion. Bar-B-Qed Feedback: Matt- The NE Pats are in a great spot to run the table this NFL Season, but for some unknown reason I have a feeling it won’t happen. I am not a “Belichick hater,” but I simply feel it is so challenging to win every NFL game with the league having so many good teams. If the Pats don’t do it this year, the Dolphins record might never be broken for years to come. Faarooq’s Friend- I know plenty of Californians who love Bar-B-Q sauce. Perhaps you have sampled some bad sauce, as there is plenty of it out there, especially the cheap stuff in grocery stores that has too much vinegar in it and is runny. Our sauces are not vinegar laden whatsoever and our sauces are rich. Try our Original Sauce, as it is sweet and has no hint of bitterness. Vinegar based sauce is not a favorite of mine. Alex- I like the idea of a Wrestlemania tailgate party featuring J.R.’s Bar-B-Q in Orlando, but my time on the day of the event, if the past is any indication of the future, is hard to come by, as that is a helluva busy day from morning until late at night for yours truly. Nevertheless, I love the idea, but the logistics would need to be addressed. Mike- You are absolutely correct in that DH Smith is a third generation wrestler, not a second. Nice catch. SKWID- I have never understood why fans go on other sites to read our blogs instead of simply logging on to this site, looking in the store, etc. Many wrestling websites essentially re-post our entire blogs for their visitors to read, but I am scratching my head as how that helps www.jrsbarbq.com if we don’t get the traffic. Nonetheless, I am not big on the “A” show nonsense, etc. that we toss around, usually in flippant tones, and it is highly unlikely that I will be advising JBL on how to do his job. Shaun- I feel very certain that if Stone Cold had not encountered serious neck and spinal injuries that, at worst, he would be wrestling a part time schedule these days. Austin is still a fan and a student of the game, but his neck issues take precedent over his heart and what it wants to do. Mike- I think the sky is the limit for Lance Cade in singles competition when the day comes for the Omaha native to go there. Cade has size, speed, youth, and is continuing to build his TV persona, which is evolving nicely. Also being trained by HBK did not hurt Cade’s entry into the business. Chris- Morrison, Punk and Miz are all in the same basic standing, in my perspective, in that they are all young and should keep improving, and none are close to peaking. Punk has more in-ring experience, I would surmise, so the ECW Champion might be leading his peers by a nose. Most weeks I really enjoy ECW as they feature more wrestling in their one hour show than most hours of wrestling on TV. david- Your promotion of Abdullah the Butcher for the WWE Hall of Fame has been printed and acknowledged. I agree that Abby is a legend. I have “put in good words for people that have paved the way” more than you would ever imagine. Mike- Thanks for the kind words comparing yours truly to “The Dean” Gordon Solie, who set the standard in my opinion for wrestling broadcasters to follow for time and memorial. Gordon was an impossible act to follow. No doubt a HOF’er. Matthew S.- The Freebirds were slightly ahead of the Four Horsemen as it relates who came first, as best I recall. Anyone want to contribute on this one? Sy/UK- I would suggest that the UK would be an awesome place to vacation if one would take the time to invest a couple of weeks there. Personally, I have never taken a two week vacation from the WWE since 1993. The only time I have been off is when I was not with the company or was ill. Even when I was ill I did several of my non-televised duties. I have never been big on missing Raw if I could help it, but Oklahoma U still has a chance at the Monday, January 7 BCS National Title Game, which would definitely be good cause for me to miss a week. Jeff- So you think that Michael Hayes has brain damage after watching the Legends Roundtable on WWE 24/7 do you? I am no doctor, nor have I ever played one on TV, although my faux arse once got ample TV time, but I would think that P.S. is as sane as anyone else on the panel, including yours truly. However, late night tapings with the Freebird can get a little edgy, but it is an entertaining edgy isn’t it? Katherine- My wife went to Wal-Mart and purchased the new Eagles CD, and yes, it is wonderful. Regarding the KC Chiefs, I am a big fan of head coach Herm Edwards, so any successes the Chiefs have don’t surprise me. I do think the Priest Holmes comeback story is an amazing one. Rico D.- Is an “urban myth” the same as B.S. or horse manure? Sounds that way regarding J.R. having arm surgery and my arm needing to be broken to complete the surgery. Not true. No surgery. Did not happen. Joseph- The Great Muta was hot in Atlanta largely due to his athletics, his unique look, he was a new, fresh face, and the fact that he had Manager Gary Hart speaking for him. Muta was a nice looking young man who could have also been a huge fan favorite there if the deck had been shuffled that way. Muta’s handspring elbow, the green mist, the moonsault, etc. all contributed to Muta’s presence on TBS. With a Heenan speaking for him in the WWE, Muta could have had a helluva run. Talent is talent and Muta had ample talent back in the day. Today his knees are shot, I am told. Gerry/Ireland- I think the MVP-Matt Hardy rivalry has worked because it is a story that has been told over time, not rushed, and therefore has allowed the audience to emotionally invest. That’s simply good, fundamental story telling… taking nothing away from the two wrestlers. James/UK- I know of no one who writes The King’s commentary on Raw. I am not quite sure what you are referring to. The King and I do not work off a “script,” if that is what you are eluding to. James from Falls City, TX- Steve Austin grew up in Edna, Texas, but did live for a time in Victoria. Steve has also lived in San Antonio for a short while, but not at this time. He now shares time in Southern California and on his south Texas ranch. Jeremy- I love all types of food… no jokes please… especially my wife’s Italian dishes…. grilled seafood… and the occasional steak. John- Thanks for the correction, as I apparently got some bad info regarding the seating capacity in the Staples Center regarding the Lakers vs. the WWE. My bad. Thanks for being with us and we will have more blogs quicker than I can say, “please visit our store and let us put a smile on some one’s face for the Holidays”. Keep the comments coming! BOOMER SOONER! J.R.

About the Freebirds/Four Horsemen question. The Freebirds formed in 1979. The Horsemen didn't form a group until 1986.

Just a quick comment on who was first, the Freebirds or the 4 Horsemen. Wikipedia tells us that the Freebirds (Hayes, Gordy, Roberts) formed in 1979. The first version of the Horsemen (the Andersons, Ole and Arn, Blanchard, and J.J. Dillion) formed in 1986. Arn was credited with creation of the 4 Horsemen name for the group, which got picked up from a comment he made in a interview during a TV taping. The "Freebird Rule" was credited for Hayes and his crew after winning the NWA Tag Titles. It allowed any two of the three to defend the titles on any given night, and worked to their advantage as opponents never knew for whom to prepare... Peace out JR....keep on doing what you're doing, which is simply put, being the BEST ... Rev

Hey JR... On the subject of two weeks in the UK - do you think WWE would ever consider taping two weeks of Raw back to back in the UK, or other foreign countries? If you were to tape Raw in Manchester one week and Birmingham / London the next it would allow you (and everyone else involved) a chance at a vacation, which I thikn would improve morale greatly (not to say its low, but it'd be a cool little 'perk' to actually have time in all of these awesome countries you go to). I just figured that with taping two weeks in Europe earlier this year (UK/Italy), it'd be a great way to expand international business. Put a word in!!

hey JR, great stuff as always. wondering what's your take on barry bonds getting indicted? i think the guy has finally had his ego deflated. also, do you feel that the I.C. title hasn't been utilitized as much as it should/could in recent times? thanks, Anthony

Without naming any names (obviously) does the ugly "N" word ever rear it's ugly head in your presence with any of your endeavors (football, wrestling, etc.)? I'm just curious in this day and age, and with the topic in the news, if someone of your stature is still exposed to such blatant racism. Also, you had mentioned knwoing Charles Barkley, did you read his last book? How do you feel about the way players such as him, McNabb, etc. are treated in Philadelphia?

JR, On the Four Horsemen DVD you said Ric Flair was the NWA world champion " back when it meant something." Well let's compare world titles shall we. The NWA world title has been held by the likes of Dory and Terry Funk, Ric Flair, Lou Thez, and Dusty Rhodes. The WWE title has been held by a drunk ( Steve Austin) a guy who openly used steroids ( Ultimate Warrior), and guy who had no talent ( Sid Vicious). It looks like the NWA world title has more value even today than the WWE title will ever have.

Hey J.R., I was just wondering what you thought about King Booker---or should I say "Booker T" being in TNA now..lol..It shocked me when I heard Jim Cornette announce his name!...I thought that he was just taking some time off from WWE to help out his little training program!...Instead, he was getting ready for TNA...nothing personal to TNA, but I was just wondering why someone would go from wrestling in a huge 80,000 seat stadium at WrestleMania 23 and surely at WrestleMania 24 as well to wrestling in a little sound stage comparison to WCW's Disney MGM studio set with only 3 to 4 thousand people in the stands..I guess its a great amosphere but still..I'm not trying to dis any TNA fans cause I enjoy watching TNA too. I was just wondering. I go to OVW shows all the time here in Kentucky in a warehouse and its an awesome atmosphere but nothing compares to being in a huge arena or stadium. In my opinion, I think that since TNA is expanding so much worldwide, that they should expand their atmosphere in the arena! Just a thought. Maybe Jim Cornette is reading the blogs too..lol..

hi jr, today i purchased my ticket to the big 12 championship game, i believe and have faith in my sooners that they will be in san antonio on december 1, and i cant wait to hang out with all the sooner fans, i also hope to hang out with you and if you know of a way how i can get you and Coach Bob Stoops to sign an ou helmet and maybe some of the players. BOOMER SOONER

I have to disagree with your Great Muta comments regarding the WWE and if Heenan was his manager. I dont think he would have a good run in the WWE if that were to happen. He was in the perfect place at the perfect time (1989!!!) in the NWA. J-Tex was huge! Mostly because of Gary Hart and Terry Funk on the mic, add the crazy Buzz Sawyer and the in-ring skills of Muta and Kendo Nagasaki and at times Dirty Dick Slater, that group was untouchable in my opinion. Its a shame, i dont know whos idea it was to break them up (i hope they were fired) becuase a feud with Sting and the returning Horsemen would have killed!! But the reason I think Muta would not have gone far in the WWE, even with Heenan at his side, is because you have to look at the history of Japanese wrestlers in the WWE. Being a Japanese-American myself, (im not going to pull any race cards here) but i was a huge fan of Muta, Nagasaki, Kai En Tai, Tajiri, Tokyo Magnum, Ultimo Dragon, etc in the WWE, WCW, ECW, or wherever. However in ECW and WCW the Japanese wrestlers had at times major roles in their organizations. Tajiri had a huge program with Mikey Whipwreck and the Sinister Minister, as well as the Great Sasuke, Taka, and Kai En Tai stealing multiple ECW shows. In WCW, of course there was the J-Tex storyline, and the Japanese luchidors had a nice run there. But in the WWE, the Orient Express went no where, Tajiri started out big, but quickly fizzled out to the lower card as well, Kai En Tai had a nice run, but ended up as a comedy act. Although the Kai En Tai vs Val Venus feud was one of my all time favorites. So all Im saying is, Muta in the WWE might have had a nice little run, but probably would not have made Main Event status like he did in the NWA and WCW. He definetly would not have won the world title like he did in the NWA, IWGP, or ALL-Japan. We all just have to remember the run he had in 1989.

Hi JR...I once had a coworker from Oklahoma.. And he said the best cooked steaks (medium well) need no sauce. You being an expert on the sauce, and one that enjoys an occasional steak...Whats your take?

I just wanted to say that I hope Ric Flair works his farewell Wrestlemania 24 tour against CM Punk because it would make for a helluva program between the two. I mentioned this before but I thought I should mention it again regardless of whether it will end up happening because I can't think of a better guy to get over the fact that Flair is leaving than CM Punk. :)

there was once a time when raw and smackdown were not two sepperate rosters. since it has been ive had to make the best of it because i love wrestling and i love the wwe but the other day me and some friends were talking and could it be holding back stories that could be happening and matches. im just saying tripple H wont be wrestling forever and him and the undertaker would be a good one to one more time.

Hey J.R., I was just informed that Booker T made his debut in TNA... I realize he recently was released from WWE and it seems like a lot of wrestlers are making that jump. In fact, it's starting to look a lot like the old WCW over there. I'm concerned with the small size of the WWE's current rosters, especially for 3 separate brands. I noticed from online that many of the superstars listed for each brand are either injured or don't work in the ring (announcers, etc.) and am beginning to get worried about the future of the WWE. I know it's a strong company, but with less and less of a talent pool to work with it's got to be hard to come up with something fresh. Please tell me everything is going to be ok!

What was the most fun PPV you ever called?

JR, 55 years ago today, November 15, 1952…the day that Judy Poffo gave birth to a child that would forever change the world and help bring about a little madness. Happy Birthday Randy. And thanks to you, Angelo and Judy Poffo, for what you have given us.

Hey JR, Just wondering, Since Wrestlemania will be outside this year, are there any back up plans ((within the stadium of course)) if it ended up raining. I've been in the Sports Industry for a while and of course there is nothing more unique than an outdoor wrestling event, so is there any plan there? Keep up the good work on both tv and your restaurant. Would love to come down there and check out the food... but living in Kentucky makes it kind of hard. God Bless, Aaron

Hi J.R., I was wondering what your thoughts are on pan fried steak? I enjoy grilled steak a lot, but when growing up, my dad would make a good bit of steak in a pan with various sauces he'd buy or else throw together. I've tried making some myself and they've always came out at least edible. I've learned to use thinner cuts for these as well. Also, what's your opinion on venison steak and other game? (Here in PA, we can get venison and that's about it when it comes to steaks.) I've learned from venison to make sure you get every last bit of fat off of it that you can as it's probably the worst tasting fat of all time.

Hi, Mr. Ross, I have been a fan of your work since the early WCW days. I had two quick questions: who do you still keep in touch with from WCW, and are there any plans to open a JR's BBQ in central FL? Thanks for your time. Renee

This is my favorite mainstream wrestling site, what do you think: http://www.news-journalonline.com/ColWrestling.htm Are there others that you would recommend?

Nice reading once again JR! I dont have a question for you man, just some feedback to let you know you are doing a fantastic job! Keep up the good work.. and the new site layout looks great!! P.S Please say hi from the UK to Chris Jericho for me! Tell him the UK missed him :) Keep up the good work

Hi JR what do u think about chris jerichos return this week on raw and edges return at surivor series

Mr. J R. Can you evaluate the impact or record of Playboy Gary Hart as a wrestling manager back in the 1960s and 1970s.

J. R. As we get to the final few weeks of the season I was hoping to get your take on the current BCS standings and maybe get your "top 5" as it stands now. Also as I am a huge Oregon fan, I would like to hear your opinion of this year's Duck team. I'm sure there must be at least a little bit of resentment after last year's infamous screw job at Autzen. I know I for one am hoping to see LSU falter down the stretch to set up a UO/OU title game which would hopefully have a less controversial finish. thank you for your time and thoughts it is appreciated.

I was wondering what you thought of the Smackdown vs Raw 2008. It has been getting very bad reviews. Alot of fans are saying rent it do not waste 60 dollars to buy it. I bought it like I do every year. I was let down. It was a good game but I think the 2007 version is the champ. The graphics are good adding Ecw to the mix was a plus. It didn't have much of a roster. A lot of the wrestlers are done with the wwe. I think it should had been delayed and tweaked a little. The story line sucks DX style. Not that i am totally P.O. i will still play the game, but next year i will rent before i spend my hard earned dollars on it.

Do you think giving wrestlers scripts really is the right way to go? I read Mick Foleys latest book and as he explains, the whole process as far as the wrestlers cutting promos is that everything is seemingly scripted word for word....Whatever happened to the old days when superstars were given a chance to prove themselves on the mic without needing it written for them?

Hey JR! My name is Mathew and I have been a fan of yours and the wwe for a long time. I am a medical student overseas in Poznan, Poland so the only way i can still watch the WWE is by subscribing to WWE 24/7 and purchasing the PPV's on Web Cast. I was wondering if they would ever post RAW on the website under the 24/7 Online Subscribers page? I know you are not the person to ask, but I consider YOU the HIDDEN creative genius in this company's history. For example, your delivery and passion behind such matches like Austin vs Hart (Submission Match), Taker vs Foley (Hell In a Cell) sparked the "attitude era" in which you created. I am a huge fan of your work! I read the blog often and i cant wait to order some jerky when i get home for christmas! Thank you for your time in reading this email, best of luck to you and your family! Matty Zada

Hey J.R.!! First off, just wanted to say I love your work on RAW -- you and Jerry's chemistry is amazing and cannot be duplicated. I've heard that before you've talked about the idea of a Legends of Wrestling game unlike the previous ones put out that have the well-known (and missed) legends such as Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Tracey Smothers, The Fabulous Freebirds, The Rockers -- all of the 80's and 90's greats along with the main foundation of pro wrestling (Bruno Sammartino, Dino Bravo, etc.) Any update/possibility of something like that being put out? I'm sure that TONS of people would jump on that "quicker than a hiccup." Keep up the great work!

Jr i have a question i want to ask that you have probably answer many times that ive probably missed. Im eighteen years old and i have been a wrestling fan for ten or more years now and i have considered professional wrestling as something i want to do. I was wondering if you could give me advice on how i could or should get started on my dream. One more question where are some of the best wrestling schools located that you would recommend?

jr whats your thoughts on Joanie "CHYNA" Laurer legally changing her name to CHYNA with a Y? She also challenged Vince McMahon and said she would return one time to the WWE for her loyal fans such as myself? You think this might happen her fans really want her back JR. Thanks and i enjoy your blog each week.

Hey JR, I saw you do the starting lineup for the Sooners on ABC in the Texas A&M game. Seeing as how I was at work, I saw the kickoff on TV but mostly had to listen to the game on the radio, which got me thinking. If Bob Barry SR., the voice of the Sooners on the radio were to retire, would you consider applying for the position in the radio booth? You'd be a natural fit!

Hello J.R. I am a longtime fan and admirer of yours. I am curious as to whether you read Eric Bischoff's book. He didn't paint a very good picture of Bill Watts as a promoter, and I have heard you say that you liked and respected Bill. Does that like and respect mean you like him as a person or as a promoter, or both? Obviously we can all like someone as a person and not as a boss. How well do you get along with Bischoff these days and did you see in his book that he said it wasn't him that got you pushed out the door of WCW?

Hey JR, what is Lita's status. Is she completly retired or just taking a break.

Hey J.R., It's been forever since I've been on here..but I just wanted to say that today, the 14th of November, was my birthday!..lol..I turned the BIG 18..But also, I wanted to say that I have really enjoyed yours and The King's commentating throughout the Orton-HBK Feud..It has, at times, given me goosebumps..Great Job!!!..Keep up the good work, but that won't be too hard for you to do anyway since you are such a constant professional!!!... I also think that this whole steroid thing is getting completely out of control by these gutless, spineless, cowardly news reporters who can't do the job right and tell people the truth. I think thats its about time for WWE to earn a chance in suing someone for a change..lol..(cough cough) *CNN* (cough cough)..i've got a really bad cold..lol Take Care J.R. And Happy early Thanksgiving!!!

Hey JR, Do you remember New Breed from around the late 80s? What were your thoughts of them? (PS: I love you JR (Non-Gay).. You are one of, if not the best commentators ever, and a true hero of mine..)

Do you think the reason wrestling is not as shocking/suprising as it used to be is because of the internet? It seems wrestling websites are always revealing suprises and spoilers of upcoming shows. Everytime I search WWE on google.com under "news". If it wasn't for the internet I think alot of wrestling fans wouldn't be so informed on the business and then I think wrestling would be more enjoyable than it already is.

Hi J.R. I know you're ahuge fan of Gordon Solie. Understandably so. I've only been exposed to him through the matches featuring him on the DVDs WWE has released in the last 5 years or so but I am sad I never got to hear his work growing up. We didn't get the NWA and/or Florida's wrestling in my part of Canada. Anyway, my question: did you ever get to call any matches with Gordon and if not, is there any particular match or card you would have liked to call with him?

In fact, in 1985, Tully Blanchard and Ric Flair were on-air rivals, I seem to remember a promo where Flair bashed Tully and called the U.S.title a piece of tin, or something to that effect, because the actual belt plates for the belt at that time were silver colored.

Indeed J.R., The Freebirds predate the Four Horsemen by seven years. The Freebirds started their group in 1979. The Horsemen didn't form until early 1986.

Mr. Ross, I think that the job that the WWE has been doing during this time of media scrutiny has been fantastic. I feel that the WWE is above board with it's drug testing. I know my thoughts about it don't amount to much. However, I will always support the WWE, and Sport-Entertainment. Have a Nice Day! David

since you and toby are on the sidelines most every game i wanted to know what your thoughts are on manuel johnson from ground level ive had the privledge of watching him since he was in the 8th grade hes a great kid raised by a great lady ive known all my life(his grandmother) he was the best wideout our school had ever had(his jr year) then became the best qb we ever had the next year were also sending you a great player next year in justin johnson(no relations)hes a rb/lb here hell play lb for the sooners but hes trying to change their minds he reminds me of earl campbell runs angry every play just keep an eye on our kids we will send more if needed

JR, as an avid WrestleMania attendee year after year, I am pumped thinking about the prospect of adding a JR tailgate party to WM weekend. I think it would be a GREAT addition to the fan Axxess the WWE holds each year. There could be nothing greater than taking in some WWE Superstars, playing games, checking out the displays & merchandise & then washing down the experience with some great BBQ!

Wat do u have planned for the 15th anniversary of RAW special? Will the DVD feature that night's event or be more of a documentary of the past 15 years?

J.R., In regards to the Freebirds/Four Horseman topic. As best as I can recall I remember watching the Freebirds on their debut on MidSouth Wrestling in 1980, and I think defeated Bill Watts and Ted Dibiase in a tag match. Hayes and Gordy came, with Roberts coming in a little later. The Four Horsemen began, I think, around '84 or maybe '85 after Crockett Promotions brought the NWA wrestling back to the Saturday evening time slot. I have watched wrestling for many years, and remember when you began announcing MidSouth Wrestling, eventually taking over the job from Boyd Pearce. Those were the days! Jesse

Hey JR, I was a little curious as to why both the King and you mentioned, quite frankly, on Raw a couple of weeks ago, the lack of crowd reaction to the Hacksaw/Super Crazy "Ho/Ce" chant received? There are a lot of wrestlers who do not or never have received any sort of crowd reaction yet commentators have never 'acknowledged it'? If you ever watch any of Hacksaw's matches he seems to always receive an enormous reaction! Even Stone Cold, on the same Raw, never received an ovation he is used to getting but you guys never pointed that out?? Then someone told me that you and Jim Duggan have a BAD history and dislike each other?? He even said you are the reason (while head of talent relations) that Duggan was never rehired (despite being one of the most 'over' wrestlers ever) after WCW folded and it only happened once Johnny Ace took over?? Is all this true???

In the wrestling sites' defense, the one I frequent only posts a few points of your blog that they feel are the most important... and say that if you want to read the whole thing to come to your site and they link to you. That's how I got around to coming to this site and come back every few days since.

J.R. I Was wondering,Ever Since Randy Orton won the wwe title,He has been booked as a weak superstar, getting Sweet chin music week after week.Orton has not been able 2 mount any offence in this feud with HBK, So i was wondering if this is a right way 2 book randy cause i don't think making him look weak as a champion is helping his career. The Booking is also damaginf the prestige of the wwe title in my opinion.

Hey JR, How long before we see Mr. Bob Backland in the Hall of Fame. I often watch some of his old matches and I think bell to bell he is one of the all time greats. Good luck to your Sooners. Now that my Buckeyes are out of the National Championship game, I'd love to see OU vs Oregon!

dear J.R. first of all let me say i love the site, very informative! what do you thik is the best looking title belt of all time? my personal view is the european belt but i mite be biased living in europe! from tomshort uk

I was curious as to whether or not a veteran superstars chances of getting into the Hall of Fame are diminished if they are released and go to the 'competition?' I ask because, in my opinion, Booker T is a LOCK, not too mention Kurt Angle, RVD(though he's not in TNA) and I'd go so far as saying that Christian will evolve into the type of Main Event-Level that Edge has done. I would hate for Kurt Angle and Booker T's accomplishments not be acknowledged by the company who really gave them their wings. Don't you?

"This stinks Ross, it stinks" - Jesse Ventura Hey Ross, With reguards to the look of the Road Warriors, do you feel that Demolition and the Powers of Pain blatantly ripped them off? Or did Demolition and the PoP bring something elst to the table? sincerely, Wes
