Beef Jerky.. The Art of the Promo.. More Titles.. Wrestling’s Tough Guys.. Smaller Wrestlers.. Mike Awesome.. Russo.. Austin Duc

Let’s do a little house keeping before we launch into this particular blog. In the USA, we can ship our sauces to you and are shipping more and more each week. If you are leery of buying things on the internet, don’t be. You will have zero issues here and we do not share our mailing list with anyone. We are in the final stages of testing our international order system, which is really encouraging. We hope to be able to ship our new Beef Jerky line abroad as well as in the States and will know more about that matter in a week or so. We have been working diligently on our line of J.R.’s Beef Jerky and being a beef jerky lover, my dad made homemade jerky when I was a kid, we have developed what I honestly believe is great jerky. I can’t stand dry, chewy jerky with little flavor and ours will compare favorably with any you have tried. Keep an eye out for it coming soon. We are also shipping a great deal of autographed caps which is an affordable item that can make a great gift or keepsake. Check out our online store and as always we sincerely appreciate your business. Our Bar-B-Q eatery is opening in Norman is scheduled for late April or early May, as it now stands, but I will keep everyone apprised of that much anticipated development as info becomes available. Thanks for your interest. These are some of my thoughts and personal opinion on some of the subjects that seem to be topical these days. The Art of the Promo- This issue is not rocket science. The audience must believe the speaker not only because of the speaker’s delivery, passion, and body English, but also the content of the interview must be believable. Most viewers these days seem to have short attention spans. You probably watch TV with the remote in your hand or near by, so the speakers should be quick to make their point and then build on it. Less is usually more…and better when it comes to wrestler verbiage. This is not to say that some, very few actually, wrestlers today have the ability to do a longer promo if need be. I don’t think wrestlers need to yell all the time either, nor should they attempt to memorize “their lines” if they ever really want to perfect this aspect of their craft. Verbal skills are perhaps more important in today’s marketplace than at any other time in the wrestling business. Being able to talk well has always been important, but when TV shows went from being one hour, regional telecasts to multiple hour national/global broadcasts, every aspect of the presentation accelerated, including the verbal aspect of the game. The more “natural” a talker can be perceived, the better because if the viewer/fan feels he or she is simply receiving lip service, the fan usually “tunes out” what is being said. There is a difference in “hearing” and “listening” to any verbal presentation, whether it be in a class room, business meeting, or doing a wrestling promo. Adding Titles- I am personally not a fan of more titles. I feel today’s business has many more significant issues to address, i.e. main event talent depth, quality training of young wrestlers, more thorough character development, talents taking ownership of their future and not blaming others for every facet of failure they may encounter, etc. than adding more “watered down” titles to any roster. Fewer titles mean more in my opinion and I would rather see the IC Title, US Title, and Cruiserweight Titles, for example, continue to be built than add new titles that would have little chance to ever reach their potential. Tough Guys in Wrestling- There have been and are plenty of them. Virtually everyone in the business is “tough” or they couldn’t or wouldn’t last. If one is simply talking about who could win a bar fight, etc the list gets a little shorter. Since the late 1880s there have always been men known to be “policemen” or designated problem solvers. Most of the men with amateur wrestling backgrounds usually would make this list. Thesz was a tough man who did not always give the public that impression. Lou was a classy representative for the business and fans saw Lou’s class before they knew he was an expertly trained “Hooker” meaning he knew now to break bones and damage joints systematically. Danny Hodge may have been the baddest of them all as Hodge was a two time Olympic wrestler and a National Golden Gloves Heavyweight Boxing Champion, who also could break bones simply by using his grip. In later years, or say over the past couple of generations, guys like Haku, Dr. Death, a young Andre the Giant, Harley Race, The Briscos, Ernie Ladd, Wahoo McDaniel, Blackjack Mulligan, Bill Watts, Ole Anderson, Gorilla Monsoon, among so many others, could handle themselves in any environment. This particular list could include literally 100s of men and a few women one would never want to cross. I NEVER said Lilian Garcia was involved in a car accident, but this is another example of websites going into business for themselves and embellishing a story. I think Lilian bumped her head on some staging in a darkened area at No Way Out. Nothing major. I have always been a fan of Junior Heavyweights and of today’s Cruiserweights. That is not at the expense of the bigger wrestlers either. I am a believer in utilizing EVERY asset at one’s disposal and if that means doing more with the Cruiserweights, then I say let’s go! A wrestler’s will/desire to be great and to perform at a high level cannot be simply measured by their size alone. I cannot speculate as to why more isn’t being done with the smaller wrestlers out there other than it is simply a personal or philosophical issue. I was saddened to hear of 42 year old Mike “Awesome” Alphonso dying in his home near Tampa. Allegedly, Awesome committed suicide and had been apparently embroiled in a marital issue. Mike was an extremely athletic big man who was surprisingly agile for his size. Mike’s best work was in Japan and in the old ECW. I did enjoy his match at ECW’s One Night Stand PPV, as well. I did not know Mike well, but when we did see each other he was always professional around me and seemed to be well liked by his peers. I seem to remember when ECW was reinstated, that Awesome was approached about coming aboard, but he was seemingly “burned out” on the business and did not appear to want to commit to a full time schedule. Injuries and other issues may have contributed to that mindset. Our condolences to Mike’s family and many friends. The WWE’s recent tour of New Zealand has started off with a bang! A near sellout the first night in, from what I am told. Great crowd response to the Smackdown/ECW Superstars. Savage- I received an email from someone who calls them self Tommy Gunn who questioned my honesty regarding Randy Savage and the never ending story of The Macho Man going into the WWE Hall of Fame. I said I have heard “zilch” about Randy being inducted. That is true. Obviously, I heard of Hogan’s radio interview with, not Vince McMahon’s secretary as Mr. Gunn indicated, but John Laurinaitis’ secretary. It was at that time that I heard the so called short list of 2007 HOF nominees for the first time. The new inductees that we announce on Raw are not even listed on the TV info we receive for that night. Sorry to burst many of your bubbles, but I am really trying to be up front here. Some people don’t appreciate or can’t handle the truth. So as it relates to Savage, believe what ever your little heart desires and direct your comments, which have been made abundantly clear about Savage in the HOF, elsewhere. I can’t induct him, I can’t nominate Randy, in other words, I can’t do a damn thing to get Savage in or out of the WWE Hall of Fame. This subject has been rode hard and put up wet. Can we move on? My wrestling broadcasting role model, Gordon Solie, never was the voice of Mid-South Wrestling even though we used some of his voice overs for talent coming into our territory. I just wanted to clear that one up plus Mid-South had zero to do with Continental Championship Wrestling in Alabama. Mid-South’s voices were the late Boyd Pierce and usually Cowboy Bill Watts. Reasor Bowden, local KTBS-TV booth announcer, was the studio interviewer and ring announcer. Then, yours truly came along and Joel Watts joined the mix to form the broadcast team and Boyd Pierce with his wild suits was made ring announcer. I also did some ring announcing in the early days in addition to refereeing and working on the ring crew. Later on, I promoted live events, and then built the UWF’s TV Network from 13 stations to over 100 stations which was essentially what Jim Crockett Promotions bought from Watts. Crockett’s NWA acquisition of Watts’ UWF was potentially one of the most lucrative storylines ever and it was a lost opportunity essentially due to obscenely poor decision making, professional jealousy, and non objective creative. Crockett could have had his own “Super Bowl,” but the UWF was watered down and finally dissolved. Then Crockett got in financial trouble and had to sell his family’s company to Ted Turner who turned it into WCW. With Crockett’s TV syndication added to Watts’ list of stations, Jim Crockett Promotions utilized well over 250 TV stations to air his various one hour syndicated wrestling programs. This is not to mention the national overlay of TBS which the UWF wrestlers barely got a cup of coffee on. MMA-Mixed Martial Arts is an interesting genre that I enjoy from time to time. It has gotten so fragmented that it is hard to keep up with all the players, who are the stars, etc, but all in all I enjoy it when I have the opportunity to watch it. Is MMA competition to the WWE on PPV? Certainly. Any PPV offering is competition to the WWE as most families only have so much disposable income for PPVs, etc. That would also include the NFL package on DirecTV, etc. MMA seems to be more of a threat to boxing than to sports entertainment, but if the attractions are all in place, then there is plenty of room for everyone to earn a nice buck or two. But to answer a direct question, yes, in my opinion, Mixed Martial Arts is a PPV competitor to the WWE or any entity who presents their products on PPV. Vince Russo- Not sure why so many are asking about Vince Russo, former TV writer at WWE and WCW and now working in TNA, but we seem to have more questions about Russo than normal. Yes, Russo was a significant part of the WWE’s success in the late 90s with the ushering in of the attitude era and the Howard Stern type of confrontational/shock TV. To hear some say that Russo was the sole reason the WWE was so successful during that period of time, however, is insane. Russo had unique visions of the product, which often times lead to some great TV. His most visible flaw, in my view, may have been at times over writing the shows which often times caused content overload for those watching. I used to broadcast those shows and often times could not remember everything we did a few hours after the show ended. I am a firm believer than most TV viewers can only retain a certain amount of information. On a personal note, I have taken exception that in the past that the talent roster that was featured in the WWE during Russo’s tenure was a pretty strong assortment of wrestlers and performers so Russo wasn’t selling goods out of an empty wagon. Nonetheless, Russo had viable, creative skills when it came to vignettes and certain aspects of character and storyline development. Plus, for those who love the “dirt,” we buried “the hatchet” years ago for the record and I wish him absolutely no ill will. Someone mentioned here that Steve Austin was “ducking” wrestling Hulk at Wrestlemania, which is a joke. Austin and Hogan are different breeds of cat. Both are legends and two of the absolute biggest stars to ever be developed in the WWE. I have great respect for each of their accomplishments. I also envy their respective bank accounts! I cannot or will not speak for Hulk, but as it relates to Steve, who I do talk to regularly, would want to wrestle for a few months to be properly prepared for Wrestlemania and a match with anyone, including and perhaps especially Hogan. With just wrapping up his first WWE Film and preparing to begin the 24/7 media blitz worldwide for “The Condemned,” there is simply no time to adequately prepare for a Wrestlemania match, as Austin is not going to phone anything in or simply go thru the motions in anything he does. Plus, Hulk needs another surgery, this time on his knee. This match was always a figment of the rumor mills, etc as Austin never seriously considered it, simply because he knew he could not be ready to wrestle with his existing movie schedule, which is the next phase of his life’s work. Whether we like it or not, the era of Steve Austin wrestling is essentially history. He has another job now and if I were advising him I would encourage him to NEVER wrestle again because of the risk of injury and ending up in a wheel chair for the rest of his days because of his neck condition. The risk isn’t worth any money or any “dream match” any of us may want to see. If anyone truly believes Austin would “duck” any challenge one simply doesn’t know Steve very well. Austin is a perfectionist who loves a challenge and that challenge now has manifested itself in his budding movie career. I also get peeved that some people seemingly “damn” The Rock because he hasn’t returned to the ring recently. Hell, he may never return to the ring for even a promo, much less a wrestling match. Here is a guy who is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood and who is making his hay while the sun shines. Who with any brains wouldn’t do the same thing? Do I miss seeing the “Great One” in the ring? Hell, yeah. But I understand the deal. Rock has moved on to other ventures. There is not one wrestler I have EVER known who would not be doing the same exact thing if they could unless they were brain dead or were in desperate need to feed their massive and fragile egos. I received an email that said I was rude to fans at No Way Out in L.A. Sunday. This one is also a little hard to believe inasmuch as I WASN’T IN L.A. SUNDAY! I honestly believe that I have probably signed more autographs and posed for more pictures than most folks inside the business and I do it because I am still a fan and respect others that are too. Have I ever been caught in a bad mood. Without a doubt. I rarely refuse to sign anyone’s autograph unless I am running really late and if I sign one I should sign them all or if I am smack dab in the middle of eating a meal. For the record, the best way for fans to get autographs of the wrestlers is to catch them at baggage claim at the airports, or in front of the hotels they are staying. Some arenas are situated where if you arrive early enough you can get folks to sign, but remember that they are going to work and like many of us usually are running late. It takes a fair amount of luck, persistence, and planning. Finally, some have asked if I would ever be interested in owning and running my own wrestling territory? Absolutely…...not. Reason…..a local territory as was prominent in the old days will NOT work today. Fans want to see the stars they see on national TV and a promoter can’t make a living running 4-5 shows per week every week and produce a one hour TV show and actually get it on a viable TV outlet (cable access doesn’t count) and make a profit. I hope someone proves me wrong, but it won’t be with my cash or time. The territory days are dead as a hammer. Trust me. Finally, I feel that some day the WWE Hall of Fame will be housed in a facility that will be much akin to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass, the MLB in Cooperstown, N.Y., etc. This has been talked about on more than one occasion and I do believe that it will become a reality in my lifetime. I am no longer in the corporate loop, so I don’t know what the disposition of this matter is today, but I do feel it is on the horizon. I think that a WWE Hall of Fame building would be great for all fans and the Hall of Famers themselves. I will answer a few of your emails before I leave on Sunday for Fresno and Monday Night Raw which looks to be a helluva show with the tag team title main event. I hope you will check back with us this weekend. Also my Raw Superstar of the Week column gets posted on Fridays on www.wwe.com on the Raw page which is next to the witness protection section of the site. Please stop by our store on your way out. Thanks! J.R.

will rick rude eventually be put in the HOF? and do u have and rick rude stories?

Hey J.R. I have read your Blog religiously for quite some time now. Its quite clear to me that you enjoy being in the postion that you're in right now which is to say "not in the loop." I understand being in that position and being involved corporatly puts you in a very stressful position and quite frankly... I don't blame you for wanting to stay out. I'm sure I speak for just about every fan in the world when I say "As long as we have J.R. and the King on Monday nights, I'm 100% happy." I know its frustrating to get so many comments and questions which happen to be reoccuring then most such as... "Will Randy Savage ever get into the hall of fame?" "Will Stone Cold ever wrestle again?" "When will the Rock ever come back." The reason so many fans ask you these questions is because these superstars left us with some of the best memories a wrestler could leave. The only issue with those people is that we feel they didn't conclude us with a sense of closure like Hogan did. Were all aware of Austin's injuries... I mean we all saw it plain as day TV! Personally I thought he was done right there. My point to all of this is that to the best of my knowledge, you played a big part in hiring in some of the most legendary superstars that has ever graced the WWE. I wouldn't say that the talent pool is bad now but lets be honest... years ago when you were involved, I think wrestling fans were just spoiled. Nobody can disagree with the fact that during the Monday Night Wars, it may have been the best time to be a wrestling fan. My question to you is... What would it take for Jim Ross to play some sort of part in hiring in new talent and being a part of story lines? In any business, the best person to go to is the person who KNOWS the business the best and with exception to a handful of people... who knows the business better than you? Who knows better than you what the fans want? Thank you for taking the time to read this Mr. Ross I look forward to a response if you ever have the chance! Budro

Hey JR, do you feel the quality of wrestling right now in the WWE is down? I know you can't answer that question honestly, but think of past Wrestlemania's compared to this one. The roster is really down to me. We once had Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels in an Iron Man Match. Now it's Cena and Michaels. Cena couldn't carry Bret's jockstrap. Undertaker and Batista is a good match, but people won't buy Wrestlemania just for that match. P.S. Shelton Benjamin is being POORLY used. Please put him in a match with RVD at Wrestlemania.

Hi J.R. I was wondering if you & other WWE employees discuss when fans mention wrestling today compared to years ago? Tag teams were plentiful, superstars had good mic skills & plus it had a totally different vibe. Do you think there's any way that today's wrestling could ever go back to that era, or do you think that it has to have the "attitude"? Since former great appear on WWE tv now & then, would you think that it would be a good idea to have more of them work with today's wrestlers to help them on skills...wrestling & promos? Maybe bring some former greats back as managers, since we need more Heenans, Fujis & Harts! Thanks J.R.!

hey JR i respect you alot and i see you get alot of negative messages. i dont want to come off like im blaming you for anything nor do i think you can do anything about things in wwe. the ECW is dead. vince can try all the things he wants but bottom line too many bad decisions are being made in reguards to ECW. extreme championship wrestling without the extreme, what sense does that make? something that really bothers me about things that go on with wwe is back stage politics. you have alot of former wrestlers and current wrestlers making decisions for the company many which in my view are wrong ones but what im getting at is whos the boss? i thought vince was. whats bad is some of these wrestlers did not do much of anything when they wrestled. not trying to be disrespectful just stating a fact. anyways keep up the good work. youre the best in the biz at what you do. you are the current generations gordon solie.

I've been a massive Kane fan for a long time now, and I think he has had some great feuds in the WWE, but I was wondering; do you think he deserved to have the title longer in 1998 and do you think he should have a WWE title run today?

I do not agree that regional pro wrestling is dead. I work for a cable tv company, and I would suggest that the changes in technology will completely revamp the way in which we watch television within the next ten years. Video On Demand will slowly become the norm, as opposed to the niche market that it is now, to the point where cable television will scale back to the 60 or 70 channel lineup that we were accustom to in the 80s and 90s, with the rest of the specialty networks appearing on VOD only. As Tivo and DVR's grow in popularity, the cost of a 30 second commercial spot will decrease for everything except live broadcast television. Sponsors can only make so much of their advertising dollar back with product placement. A quick scan of the higher channels in your cable lineup will show you that the vast majority of their commercials are not for products that pay for the airtime, but ad's for other programs on that particular channel, as they don't have enough sponsors to fill a commercial block. With this being the case, content providers will not shy away from migrating into a VOD only format, charging viewers a nominal fee for some programming, or even a subscription fee to a particular show, with the fast forward feature disabled to prevent commercial skipping (which is not possible using the current cable/DVR system). This being the case, I believe you will begin to see a lot of local exclusive programming in individual markets appear for VOD cable customers. Subscribers could get their local news and weather, as well as any other local programming that their area has to offer, from high school and college sports to talk shows to pro wrestling. Companies have already shown that they can turn a profit without dominating the industry. Ring Of Honor just celebrated their 5th anniversary and has turned a larger profit than TNA using a business model where their revenue comes entirely from tickets, DVD's and merchandise sales. They put on an entertaining show for not a lot of money, and make all of their shows available on DVD for those who aren't able to attend live. I would estimate that their "Joe vs Kobashi" event from 2005 outsold many mainstream wrestling DVD's from larger companies. With technological advances to Video On Demand, we may see a day where shows from promotions like ROH can be viewed at home, costing quite a bit less than running a weekly or semi-weekly broadcast on cable tv the way it's always been done. After all, Vince McMahon made his millions on taking advantage of new technology to change the industry. He took advantage of the breakout of cable television and video tape in the 80's to break up the territory system, and he took advantage of the new pay-per-view format to bring the WWF/E to dominate the industry. With technological advances come change, and we are at the footsteps of a revolution in the way content (cable, phone and internet) is delivered and viewed in the home. I believe this change will benefit the pro wrestling industry as a whole, and allow regional promotions to get their product out to a larger audience, even if they remain regional in terms of where they put on their shows, and as the ROH / CZW feud has shown, when two companies can put their ego's aside and work together to deliver an entertaining product, there is a lot of money to be made. Elvis, The Beatles, Nirvana and others have shown the world that it is possible for the alternative to push away the mainstream, and to reshape an industry through creativity and alternative entertainment. The pro wrestling industry is no different. Rome may not have been built in a day, but as history has shown, it also was not built to last. Change is inevitable. I enjoyed the article, JR. Thank you.

"Randy Savage" blah blah blah... Everyone seriously needs to let this Randy Savage thing go. If he gets in, he gets in. If not, tough sh*t. I think Guns N' Roses will have released 'CHINESE DEMOCRACY' before Savage gets inducted into the WWE H.O.F. But I digress. Personally, I'm more concerned that for the past 5 years, a tremendous tragedy has been re-occuring night after night on Monday Night RAW. What tragedy you ask? HBK no longer being HBK. I respect a man's decision to do what he feels he has to do with his life as far as bettering himself as an individual, but dang Shawn, couldn't you have done what most people do, and wait until your like 60, trying to buy your way into heaven through faith? Sounds terrible to say, I know, but as a 10-year plus HBK fan, these past 5 years have been torture for me. I'd also like to think that the new DX wouldn't have been such a dud (aside from little kids liking it...which I'm sure is why DX is still promoted)if HBK was the same man he was in '97, or at least was willing to pretend to be. Yes, I am aware that I don't know him on a personal level as you do, J.R., and I know I can't speak for the man, but I'm merely stating my personal feelings as a fan. Ever since 1998, when Shawn left due to this back injury, I hoped every Monday night that he'd show up and get back in the title hunt. So imagine my delight when he finally came back! Of course, once I got wind of how he was going to handle himself and what would and wouldn't be, I must admit I was a bit let-down. The man performs his ass off, I won't take that away from him. He is a phenomenal talent and always has been. But, it'd be nice to see the 'old Shawn' back. Oh well. After thinking about it, there's really no relevance to this post, lol. Just venting I guess. Oh, and this guy....man, you CAN'T BE SERIOUS!: {{Ludvig Borga fan 4 life Says: February 24th, 2007 at 9:34 pm J.R.- love your blogs, check them regularly, but one thing that is noticebaly abscent week after week is any mention of former WWF/WCW wrestler Macho Man Randy Savage…im surprised you, nor the readers, ever bring him up. where is he? is there any chance he will be going into the Hall of Fame this year? i remember him being a pretty popular superstar back in his day…and i also recall his in-ring work being on par with some of the best. is he Hall worthy in your eyes? and if so, why are others such as tony atlas and bob orton, jr being inducted before him. seems strange, that he has yet to be enshrined. is there a possible conflict between him and wwe brass? what are your thoughts.}}

Fans "damn" The Rock because he would not have a movie career (which ,from what I've read, isn't exactly breaking any box office records) if it weren't for his WWE fans, yet he won't give us the time of day. He also said that he would always be part of WWE. People connected with the Rock unlike any other wrestler I can think of. Now it seems like he is too good for us and I don't mind telling you that it hurts. In a way we are all like jilted ex-lovers and we are bitter. I don't go to see the Rock's movies anymore, he doesn't want us and I don't want him.

JR, I've been a wrestling fan since the 80's and can honestly say that you are at the top of my list in upstanding men in the business both on camera and off from everything I've seen and read. My question to you is regarding the WWE Championship. Let's assume Shawn Michaels is able to capture the belt ( a word no longer used on the air, along with "strap"). If this does indeed happen, will we finally see a traditional WWE belt again, or is the spinner here to stay? I understood it at first, especially after Austin had his "Smoking Skull", but for us traditionalists out there, it would be nice to see the respected title return to an appearance that gives it more dignity in my opinion. Thanks for everything you've done and are doing.

JR iwas a t a q and a a couple of years agoo and sgt slaughter and the iron shiek were there well sarge was asked about backstage fights between wrestlers and he claimed That he and shiek had several fights during their career with each other, but yet i saw them very friendly at the hall of fame,Did these fights really take place or was sarge staying with the story angle?

Hi J.R., I was wondering when and how did JBL get injured to make him go into retirement?

J.R. do you think there's a possibility that Big Dave will take on the dead man in Hell In A Cell at mania'?

Hi J.R., first of all, I think you are the best commentator. You bring real excitement into big matches and that is what I love. For example when you called The Undertaker vs Kane. I don't know why but I always get goosebumps when I see and hear from those moments. It is the first time I write on your site and I hope you will read this. Wrestlemania isn't far away and I want to know why didn't Mania take place in big arenas since Wrestlemania 19? Don't you think it would be awesome to hold Wrestlemania in Japan or Mexico? Much love and respect. God bless you. Thorsten Reiter

Regarding your comments on Daniel Rodimer; I watch OVW every week and try to attend a house show every month. In my opinion Mr. Rodimer is a complete STIFF! This past week he wrestled a "returning" Mark Henry and Daniel made Mark look like Rey Misterio. I don't mean size-wise either. OVW also has other "stiffs" such as Charles Evans and Justin LaRouche working here. Not one of these men (Evans, Larouche, or Rodimer) could cut a promo with a chainsaw. I can also (personally) add in the "son of a plumbers" youngest Cody as a borderline talent. But then again, I was never one of a fan of any Runnels family member. On the other hand, there are quite a few stars in the making here. Paul Burchall,Aaron Stevens,& Johnny Jeter are all here now (for one reason or another). Boris Alexiev has a great gimmick (Russian cage fighter) and look. Shawn Spears,Steve Lewington, and Harry Smith all have great looks and and talents. The "Divas" of OVW are also extremely talented as well. Katie Lea (current champion) and Beth Phoenix had one of the best ladder matches BAR NONE! Cherry (w/ Deuce and Domino) recently used a "blockbuster" move on Katie Lea. And for just "fluff", Maryse Ouellet, Milena Roucka, and Victoria Crawford are all DOLLS! And the non-WWE talent such as Sosay,Roni Jonah and ODB are all talents that should be given a closer look.

Thanks for taking time out to speak to the fans J.R. Do you think Chris Benoit is being underutilised? I think perhaps his lack of prommo skills has kept him back. I think he is arguably better than Kurt Angle but just not a 'strong character'. His post match celebration with Eddie Guerrero at Wrestlemania 20 is the top-5 wrestling moments ever!

Hi in the march edition of the WWE Magazine it says Batista would beat Brock Lesnar, your thoughts?

What's going on JR!!! Love listening to you Monday Nights you make it enjoyable to watch. I know you said something about Hulk Hogan needing knee surgery and that has contributed to him not being at Wrestlemania. I've heard alot of rumors however that the real reason has to do with money. I heard that he wants to make a great deal of money, even more then the top stars who are wrestling full time just to appear. Now if this is true then I applaud WWE for not budging on this matter. Having Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania would be great, but I think its time to invest more in the future stars. I am a huge fan of the legends of wrestling but their style is not as smoothe as it once was. I now appreciate the new stars who bring something new to the company. Randy Orton is the future, I really believe that guy can be the next HUGE thing if he applies himself to it and I really wish Christian would of stayed with the WWE. He had something with his promo's, reminds me of the Rock. While he's doing well in TNA, I don't think he can reach that next level without the WWE. Last Question, Is Stone Cold even medically cleared to come back to wrestling? I know he has a really bad neck that he could do more damage to it and is it alot like an injury Shawn Michaels had? Thanks alot JR I'll keep checkin to see if you replied.

hi jr with the cross over of brands of late can you see them scrapping the draft to form one roster agian i feel this could be benifical to wwe as the talent pool seems a little low as of late wwe is missing the likes of big show Triple H lesner jechico also think wwe.com should bring back the ross report it was good to hear about up and coming talent keep up the good work!!

for 'fans' saying wrestling will survive without hogan course it will but he should not put over stupid kids who will never be 'IT',ive noticed also most of the 'fans' calling for a rest on the RANDY SAVAGE HOF 2007 SUBJECT also mention in there posts about current storylines,if youve been watching wrestling for about 5 years then you shouldnt really comment on someone who has made himself into a star and mcmahons company,i know one thing for sure these NEW 'superstars' LINDSAY,KENNY,NITRO, will be the death of any wrestling company if you give them the main event status,DID EVERYONE KNOW RAW LAST WEEK LOST 675,000 DURING THE KENNY-LINDSAY MATCH,REAL FANS dont want to watch the garbage mcmahon can pay peanuts to thats why they tune out in numbers, and HULK HOGAN NOT AT MAINA IS NOT A GOOD MOVE,for someone who has made a lot of people rich and working today in the wrestling business including lindsay, kenny etc...is downright disgusting kick in the face to any 80's fan,the sooner HULK gets his new wrestling company up and going with help from SCOTT HALL AND NASH THE BETTER! come on nature boy you deseve better than this!

Dear Mr Ross; I have been watching wrestling my whole life, I am now 30 years old. I am glad to see that we have gotten away from the "Papa Shongo" casting spells on the "Ultimate Warrior" days. Nothing personal against them, or the company, but it was starting to get a little silly. Getting to my main question, what ever happened to the old days, when the stars would wrestle "plain guys", (like the Mulkey brothers, or George South, or Iron Mike Sharp), during the week, and sometimes they would get attacked during there match, or during an interview, and it would all build up to the main event. Please don't get me wrong, I still watch wrestling and like it, but I was just wandering why that stopped. It seems like now the pay per view match is basically the same matches that you see every monday night. Your comments if any. Thank You Adam Williams Fairborn, Ohio

Jim ~ I heard a rumor on several of the "rumor mill" wrestling websites that Macho Man Randy Savage was spotted at the Westin Suites hotel in Stamford, likely there to negotiate a new contract with WWE. Any girth to this story?

JR, If Watts sold the UWF to Crockett who inturn then sold to Turner, does that mean that the WWE own the video library of the UWF?? If that's the case, tell the suits to do a "Rise & Fall/Spectacular Legacy" DVD with the UWF? That would be a big seller.

WE WANT HULK HOGAN AT WRESTLEMANIA 23!! It just sucks, the 20th anniversary event of Hulk's biggest match of his career and he's NOT going to be part of the show.....that just sucks!! WE WANT HULK HOGAN AT WRESTLEMANIA 23!!

Hey J.R.! You need to tell Vince NEVER to say that "WWE gives the fans what they want", for that matter you should never say it again either because it's not true. The Hulkamaniacs want Hulk at WrestleMania, but it looks like that's not going to happen. For what Hulk has done for this business and WWE specifically, he should get better treatment from McMahon. Plus, fellow hulkamaniacs like myself want to see him, and we make Vince money by him having Hulk at his shows, and Vince knows this! If WWE (McMahon) really believes that they "give us what we want" then do so........

Hulk Hogan and Macho Man for the Hall of Fame 2007 baby! And make sure Mickie James wrestles on the Wrestlemania card this year! Damn right, Jim!

Totally agree with your comments on The Rock, it's a damn shame how some of these fans don't realize he's doing what's right for him and his future. B

Hulk Hogan should never have to lose to anyone anyways. He is the foundation of this business. Why should he come back and lose to some joker like Orton or Michaels after defeating Andre the Giant and everything? He has proven himself to be the face of pro wrestling and a hero to millions. Why should he lose matches to unworthy competitors and disrespectful losers like HBK? Mocking his wrestling ability because he can never outsell the Hulkamania/nWo merchandise on the grand scale of things. Michaels is a jealous bitter man and a phony Christian. What he did to Bret Hart was scandalous and disgusting. Speaking of disgusting WWE moves, why hasn't Macho Man been inclusive in recent years? They throw a pic of Macho and an "Oh Yeahhh!" on their site for greatest romances a few days ago. Why? Because it is free and they don't have to pay Macho a dime by doing it. Then they put over the HHH/Stephanie relationship as more important than Savage/Liz? Savage and Liz was a tender, great celebrated moment for the fans. This HHH/Stephanie was some scheme set up when Trips cheated on Chyna. They broke up like 8 times on WWE TV and the whole thing was some sour-tasting Soap Opera. The Macho/Liz had some realism to it at least, and was great to watch. Any "relationship" during the Attitude era holds no candle to what Randy and Elizabeth accomplished. Someone get Randy in the Hall of Fame and tell HBK to burn in hell.

First of all, thanks for all of your frequent updates to this site...your blog offers the type of "behind-the-scenes" info that us true 'Rasslin' junkies LOVE!! I have been a fan of WWE for as long as I can remember (at 27 years of age, I can VAGUELY recall shooting off a hate letter to Paul Orndorff when he turned on the Hulkster), but since have also become a fan of wrestling in general. I have truly come to enjoy a more hard-hitting, stiff, athletic style with strong mat wrestling/ submission style wrestling (somewhat like Ring of Honor, if you're familiar). Do think WWE would ever possibly make a TV show featuring more of that style, or is that missing WWE's "casual fan" demographic?? I was hoping, in earnest, that this is what the new ECW would become...but instead, it's just more "sports entertainment..."

I know Vince does things his way, but to try and put Umaga (who wan't much as Rosie) over during Raw at the expense of the announcement of Dusty's induction. Well that was a whole lot of pathetic in my opinion, it only goes to show how classy Roddy and Dusty are to help someone. Who I think couldn't have carried their gym bags when they were in their prime, I understand business as my father used to hang out same bar most of wrestlers who came out of Pacific Northwest (Seattle) in 1950's did. He said great guys, some A-holes too, but to watch them discuss a birthday party for kid then go across street with same guy and do a "interview"...going to kill you your mother and destroy your career. Then come back across and finish planning the birthday party, he said he thought they were as good as any actor in Hollywood (which is why some end up in movies-believability and portraying a character). I grew up knowing wrestling was "NOT REAL", but subscribe to my dad's belief that they are some of the best athletes pound for pound AND admiring their skills in creating characters and holds and making fans feel a part of it. I watch Raw more than Smackdown, I go back to Mid-South where I first saw you. But go even further back to AWA and Verne Gagne, I lived in Colorado for 10 years in 1970's-80's and we got Channel 2 from Denver which carried AWA out of Minnesota. When you talk about Pat Patterson, Bockwinkle and Stevens brings back memories. This blog am replying to mentioning some of the names you did brings back good memories of sitting in the exhibit hall on Colorado State Fairgrounds watching Dick Murdock, Black Jack Mulligan and others on a Saturday night. I learned to enjoy Ted Dibiase and Steve "Dr. Death Williams watching you and your craft on Bill Watts program, even though you and I would be on seperate sides of stadium 1st Saturday in October. I am a HUGE Houston Texans fans and friend love torturing me with prospect Texans could draft an OU player (Adrian Peterson). I think he is a fine young man, who has overcome a great deal of family issues to prove himself. But damn been a Longhorn fan since 1972 when gentleman moved in down street in Pueblo Colorado with a satellite dish (big black colender) to make sure he had access to UT games, he taught me Texas Fight Song, Eyes of Texas and Hook Em Horns and especially to hate Texas greatest rival...Oklahoma Sooners. JR I have not seen you away from screen ever but seeing you go into ring on premise you had offended powers that be and have to be injured/shown a lesson shows your talent, skill and fact momma and daddy raised you right. When you fell ill I said many a prayer to G-d that he would bring you through because you, Gene Okerlund, Bobby Heenan and several other announcers helped me enjoy many an hour in front of TV. I respect you, admire you and would point you out to any who asked who is most professional person you know of. Have lived in Texas for last 27 years and so spent much time watching Von Ercih's and many of the guys who came out of their organization..Steve Austin being one, I have enjoyed watching him transform from a babyface to a heel to I would say a SUPER Heel to being transformed to a LEGEND. Since you talk to him regularly tell him he is missed in ring, BUT not one of his real fans would want him to endanger himself for 1 match. I have enjoyed watching him in shows like "Nash Bridges" and few small roles in movies and glad he will finally get his break into big time, he is one of a kind and truly makes it enjoyable to watch him work. JR know you busy traveling and sorry to have been so wordy, but wanted to express to you my thanks for many a saturday afternoon in front of TV and now Monday nights watching a man who I think OU would be damn stupid to pass over as a announcer. If you can make people in an arena and at home on TV get involved and feel what is happening you can damn sure get 60,000+ crazed fans fired up. Thanks sir and G-d Bless you

Hey JR, I've heard over the years that you and Tony Schiavone didn't get along too well. Care to shed any light on that? I thought you were a better announcer, but I thought Tony Schiavone did a good job until the last two years of WCW. Any chance of him ever appearing for WWE, atleast on some documentaries? I mean he was a big part of WCW during the Monday Night Wars. Thanks, Matt

Hey J.R, Do you think that Goldberg can make the HOF in future

Hello Sir JR I need to find out your thoughts on the whole boogeyman & mini boogeyman vs finlay and little b****** feud. I thought since his debut that the boogeyman gimmick was going to flop and i was never into finlay fighting irishman thing either. And now they have small people doing the SAME THING!!and to top it all off they have a guy (boogeyman) who is supposed to be unstoppable and unbeatablebeing pinned by a leprechaun. Someone has screwed up big time.

Is It true JR that in 1999, just before WM 15 that Russo wanted to book you into a match with michael cole. Where you happy with that heel role you had then, when you would come out and have your own desk in front of the proper announce team. I thought at that point in time, WWE were going to push Dr Death as the top challenger for stone colds belt. In which, you JR would be also involved as Dr Deaths manager if they had done it.

Good Ol' JR, There is a clip on the internet unfortunately catching the TNA announcers reading from a script during a backstage fight. Has this ever happened to you, and would you rather work from a script or just call the action live?

Hey J.R., First off I would like to say that I think it is great that you have such an awesome friendship with Stone Cold and that you are such a friend that you would look out for his well being and advice him not to return to the ring..friendships like that are hard to come by.. My question for you is about the HOF who is the selection commitee and is there any criteria for selection..Last year verne gagne who spent all his years in the awa was elected into the hall, does that mean tha tthe doors are open for other awa stars such as Nick Bockwinkle, and jerry blackwell. and more deservingly does that open the doors for the longtime great announcer from the your past Goron solie..i loved listening to him announce and think he would be a lock to make the hof.I plan on attending the activities in detroit for wrestlemania are you going to be doing in appearances other than the fan access... thanks for all you do for us fans JIM

Oh and too the why won't Hogan put over young guys question...some simply aren't worthy, why is Orton worthy of beating Hogan? He just gets by on his look, not really wrestling ability, or working the fans. WWE's new mission is to try and make us watch because of a guys look first and ability later. Remember when Brock Lesner first appeared on TV? Yes he was a freak of nature physically but he could wrestle, he wasn't that good on the mic, but he still had charisma, and had PAUL E to work the mic for him...where is our next Lesnar? who you just watch and say THAT is a superstar right from the get go..if Lashley had any charisma it could've been him Interesting to always see the Savage questions...first of all he needs to get his head screwed on.

JR, would WWE ever grant the fans access to see how guys prepare for shows. Like say, following John Cena or Vince McMahon through a whole raw taping or something just to see how much goes into a show. also when you say a wrestler like say HHH studies his opponent on tape, does he really do that? do the guys sit together and analyze their matches or anything of that nature I was reading Lance Storms blog about Mike Awesome and he was talking about how Chris Jericho was given a heads up about his opponent giving 'stiff' shots, is there any wrestlers code about stuff like that?

Hi Do you really like Skittles so much. Its the best part of RAW these days you shilling them each week.

Which cities would you like to see host Wrestlemania in the future? I've heard Vegas and Orlando are the top contenders for Wrestlemania 24. Has anything changed, or are there others being considered? What are some of the criteria WWE looks at in selecting a city and venue?

Hey JR. Love this blog! I really look forward to reading new entries. My question is... will WWE ever beef up the tag division? I remember the days when tag division matches were something to look forward to. Now, it's mostly a couple of singles wrestlers put together for a few months. I know that if there were more tag teams, it'd be tough to get them TV time, but I still think it needs some attention. What do you think?

Hi JR,I know you probably been asked this a million times. Will Sting ever wrestle in WWE.I've been watching TNA Impact and definitely Sting still has it for a older wrestler.I really believe he deserves one more big run.

JR. Do you think wwe will ever bring back the wcw. bash at the beach would be cool to see it outside again by the beach!

Any Chance of High Voltage coming in to the WWE?

JR, Came across an old Family Feud taping of when you were in WCW. Can you tell everyone about being out of your element while still being on TV? You do it live for 2 hours once a week, and it's like puttin' on a pair of socks to you now. But back before live broadcasts, I'd like to know how that made you feel and how you ended up [SPOILER ALERT] giving some straight but not so popular answers to cost WCW the grand prize. Any comments you can make on that taping with the GLOW women, Pillman, Tommy Zenk, The Candy Man, Sting, and another guy thats not coming to mind at the moment...

J.R., what are your thoughts on Abdullah the Butcher and is there any chance he could ever be elected to the WWE Hall of Fame, or perhaps brought in for a couple of appearances. He did a shoot interview a few years ago and said the one and only thing missing from his career is he never worked Madison Square Garden. I know he's 65 or so & definitely doesn't work the WWE style, but it would be great to see him honored, because he is a legend who has wrestled everybody who was anybody during the past 4 decades.

Hi J.R, Could u please tell shawn michaels to put his heart break tights back on thanks !
