Wham Bam trip to Cleveland and back to record this week's WWE Superstars bout for Thursday's WGN America and Friday Night Smackdown that will air on MyNetworkTV. These 3:30 a.m. wake up calls coming off the heals of a taping day become more and more challenging. Nonetheless it's time to kickoff these proceedings.....
Jerry Lawler and I will make a rare, personal appearance (for me any way) this Sunday at the much anticipated Dragon Gate wrestling event in Chicago at the Congress Theater. The event starts at 6 and we will do our signing prior to the first bell. I look forward to the experience which will be coming off the heels of the OU-BYU game in Dallas Saturday night on ESPN after which I will drive the Mrs and me back to Norman and fly out of OKC to Chicago on Sunday around lunch time.
Speaking of Dragon Gate, Bryan Danielson will also be signing at that event and wrestling. Bryan, trained by HBK, has apparently agreed to a deal with WWE which is a smart move on the WWE's part. I think Danielson should have been signed long ago but that's just one man's opinion.
Danielson's skill level is superb even though he isn't the biggest dog in the hunt which, thankfully, seems to be meaning less and less these days. Talent comes in all sizes and shapes and having a roster full of look alikes helps no one. The wrestling business has always been built on individuality and uniqueness. I am a firm believer that every prospect doesn't have to be 6'2" and weigh no less than 240 pounds and look pretty in an 8X10. It's hard to measure a man or a woman's passion by how they look in a still photo.
I have no clue as to what WWE brand Danielson will migrate to first but it would not surprise me to see him hang his hat in ECW. For the record, that's not an official declaration but merely an opinion. WWE honchos could bring Danielson to Smackdown and it wouldn't hurt my feelings. I'm just saying.
We got a ridiculous amount of emails this week damning the Chavo Guerrero-Hornswoggle storyline. WAY too much venom for a non main event issue. It looks like Chavo & Evan Bourne will be competing soon which should allow those emailing us with major issues on this matter to chill.
"The Price is Right" TV legend Bob Barker is an alleged lady's man so when "Mr. Come on Down" guest hosts Raw in Chicago it might be a good idea for the smart, sexy, powerful Divas of Raw to beware or it could be a "vintage" May to December romance opportunity. The late, Ray Combs of "Family Feud" fame told me many "tales" of Barker's legendary eye for the ladies. Not that there is anything wrong with that, for the record.
Let's hear it for Bob!!
For some reason, I see the silver haired, TV Icon crossing paths with Santino Marella in Chi-Town not to mention that there could be competition to see who Monday's "Barker Babes" might be if a Raw version of "The Price is Right" is conducted.
About 9,000 tickets for "Breaking Point" in Montreal have been sold with about 10 days to go. It will be interesting to see what kind of crowd gathers as the trend these days, with the economy as it is, is for the week "of business" becoming more significant. When I first started in the wrestling biz, "the walk up the day of the event" was the key to success. This trend has changed over the years whereby the first day of ticket sales has become much more significant. Fans with less disposable income due to the economy, etc will be making ticket purchases later in the process while the economy struggles for all of us. I do think Montreal will sell out "Breaking Point" at the end of the day.
It will be great to see Trish Stratus in Toronto in a couple of weeks guest hosting Raw in her home town. As a matter of fact, it's always good to see "Canada's Greatest Import" anywhere. Perhaps I can persuade my Ryan Seacrest-like partner Todd Grisham that we need to be at the TO Raw even if we don't do our solitary, WWE Superstars match that night. We will be in Hamilton on Tuesday for Smackdown on this Canadian run and will be basing out of Toronto on Monday and Tuesday. BTW Trish and Stacey Keibler are on the cover with yours truly of our "J.R.'S Cookbook" which we personally autograph and sell in our on line store for $9.95 and they were originally $16 when they were released.
I will be starting a radio gig Wednesdays at 5 central time on www.1560thegame.com which is the site with streaming audio of sports talk powerhouse 1560 The Game in Houston. We'll talk some 'rasslin and Big 12 Football. Tune in if you can.
You can also catch me Friday mornings at 6:45 central time on the Oklahoma City Fox 25 Morning Show. I'll be doing a short segment doing football predictions. Rising at 5ish in the morning and driving up to OKC at that hour there is no telling what I may say in my morning delirium.
Smackdown rocks this week without question and is arguably the best WWE TV broadcast of the week largely thanks to a three segment IC Title Bout between Rey Mysterio and John Morrison. This one is "restaurant quality." I remember years and years ago, wrestling announcers used to hype TV bouts as being good enough to be "a main event any where in the country." Yes, hyperbole has been around since the inception of TV but I will promise you that Mysterio and Morrison turn it on Friday night in one helluva wrestling match on MyNetworkTV. SD has been fortunate to have featured some outstanding wrestling the past several months, particularly in the last few weeks, but this contest will standout in most, objective fans eyes. Try to put the IC Title controversy and all the "dirt" and other speculative BS aside and sit back and enjoy this match for the story that's told bell to bell.
Plus, Matt Hardy vs C.M. Punk is a stout bout too Friday night. It's another longer than normal TV match that delivers the goods. If Rey vs. Morrison had not preceded it earlier in the show, most fans, including me, would be loudly singing that show closing bout's praises even more.
One of my favorite new franchises, The Hart Dynasty, gets back in the spotlight on Thursday night's WWE Superstars on WGN America.
My first "7 Points to Ponder" column is going to be posted Wednesday or Thursday on www.ouinsider.com. Suprise...this will be about OU Football and their upcoming game.
From my perspective, it seems as if several, young talents are beginning to start to understand what it takes to be a star in the wrestling business. It is not an overnight process and it isn't about who simply "gets the push." Several things have to come together but consistent, hard work and a little luck are both necessary to make it. I like to refrain from overselling any young talents because I feel some of them might become less hungry plus if someone deserving is inadvertently omitted it does them no favors. Long story short, based on what I have personally been observing, several young wrestlers seem to be taking positive steps with their careers. These folks just need "game time" and to get their hands on the ball in order to see if they can actually "make some plays." Yeah, football metaphors all but it's that time of the year.
Wrestling fans every where are seemingly waiting to see "new" on their TV sets in viable roles and added to existing stars who are currently staples of their respective programs.
Steve Austin is scheduled to wrap the latest film he's starring in on Wednesday in Vancouver. In the last few days of filming, Steve ran into an "I" beam and severely gashed his bald head. He emailed me a photo and it was gnarly to say the least but Steve said that he "didn't sell it and never left his feet." And when I say gash, I mean gash. Austin's legend of being "hard headed" is not folklore I assure you. Steve may be starting yet another film, perhaps in Vancouver, in November, TBD.
We are putting together some new packages of products from our on line store and will have them on the site in the next few days. These packages will save you money on many of our most popular items and many will also include FREE SHIPPING for our customers who reside in the USA.
I also invite you to check out our ramblings on the Smackdown page at www.wwe.com which is usually posted on Thursday afternoons.

Hi J.R.
I think SD needs more talent, and it will help the other talent that SD has to evolve more into World Class superstars. Yes specially in this grieving moment, when we just loss Jeff Hardy and it is about time that SD should get a few more but also because as we have seen many SD superstars got more TV time then on the other Brand. You have a locker room full of superstars purchased from the Draft 2009 and I'm refering to Raw and then you don't have enough in ring performance because their is none. Why? Randy/Cena/HHH/DX are the guys who take all that time away from wrestling.
I would like to see that specially in this time when we lost Jeff that John Morrison should take over that league rather than becoming IC champ i would rather want to see him become World Champ. BTW what happened to the Undertaker.
thanks again for this great blog.
Long time wrestling fan (45 years) who has been greatly disappointed in the whole wrestling scene BUT this past week the Morrison/Mysterio match renewed my faith that all may not be lost. The best match I have seen in many years anywhere. I feel the Smackdown brand is taking over RAW just by the energy level of the talent. I am pretty tired of the bad comedy and repeated use of HHH, Cena and Orton. The DX stuff is funny but stupid. It appears that the creative team is not creative.
Your call of the match between Morrison and Mysterio was priceless. Everything was just about perfect and it was a joy to watch.
I hope that the WWE will take a step back and give the limelight to the MVP's, Evan Bourne's and other young talented wrestlers who, if given the chance, could carry the banner into the future for the WWE.
Best regards,
Chuck
JR
Just to quickly address your comments towards the Chavo/Hornswoggle storyline. If you personally feel that "Only the Main Event matters" in that fans shouldn't get upset over anything that airs on WWE TV unless it's the Main Event ... then quite frankly and with all due respect, you have lost touch with the wrestling audience. This horrendous philosophy that "Only the Main Event matters" was adpted by Vince several years ago, and this is why he is so frustrated and behind the 8-Ball on creating new stars and getting them over with the audience.
The Chavo vs Hornswoggle program has aired on WWE TV since the beginning of July. Since that time period, there has been a Chavo vs Hornswoggle match on TV literally 7 weeks out of this 2 month time frame. So, we basically have seen this match for every single week, done over and over and over again. Is the audience not supposed to get tired of seeing the same match every week? Is that the philosophy that goes on in Creative Meetings every week? If Cena vs Orton took place for 8 weeks straight on Raw, you don't think the fans would get tired of it?
All we are asking that the Creative team actually show some "Creativity" and come up with new scenarios (and same match done every week with a different gimmick doesn't count) for Hornswoggle each time, if he's that big a draw with the kids. Here, adults are the majority of your audience, and you are forgetting that you are subjecting them to this, as well. Adults will tolerate Hornswoggle on TV, as long as you come up with new and creative spots to work him in each week, as opposed to what you've done with him for the past 2 months.
Thank you.
I have yet to watch ROH. Not that I wouldn't care for it, but it's the "I got older and moved away from obsessively following wrestling" syndrome. Something tells me that if Danielson is used correctly, then he will be used to the point where he winds up working injured all the time.
As for your remark about "looking good," this reminded me of something. The first wrestler I ever remember watching was Killer Karl Kox. At least he had the common sense enough to retire before someone came up to him and told him "We can't use you anymore. You just don't look good on an ice cream bar." The staleness of WWE, combined with the s%$*ty booking of TNA despite the occasional real good match, makes me pine for the days of good territories again.
i agree with kartos mabey people dont want to buy tickets to see Cena vs Orton for the 40th time i mean u cant blame the economy when it could just be that we are tired of seeing the same people main event and its Raw thats getting so boring
enigma
Hi Jr!
I just wanted to point out that the economy isn't that bad in Montreal or Quebec. Its not even close to as bad as in the USA. I think blaming low tickets sales on that is weak. I think people in Montreal just don't care that much anymore for WWE or pro wrestling. The UFC event in April sold out no problem. That was only 6 months ago. Even at the ROH shows that i attended in Montreal, the crowds were smaller than what ROH are used to. I do think it was a smart move by WWE to do a submission PPV in Montreal after the growing sucess of MMA in Montreal. Don't get me wrong, I love pro wrestling and im not even sure im going to Breaking Point. My reasons are not financial. I just prefer supporting indies. But hey, Smackdown is great though. I think its awesome that you are going to be at Dragon Gate. Your gonna see stuff that will blow your mind. see ya!!

Great blog as always JR,I read it almost religiously. Just thought I'd tell you that I think you and Todd Grisham are forming one of the best broadcast partnerships I've seen in many years. The commentry you guys provide only adds to what is in my opinion the best show on TV right now, smackdown.
I think that Smackdown would be a perfect fit for Danielson, mostly so I can see him work with CM Punk again and I agree with you 100% that a wrestler does not have to be a certain size to be successful. Just look at how well guys like Tyson Kidd and Evan Bourne have done since they debuted in the WWE.
By the way, I'm not sure if anyones has asked you this before but are you aware of any plans to broadcast Superstars in the UK and Ireland?
Hi JR. I was wondering if the Dragon Gate wrestling event you are attending is the same event that former WWE star Brian Kendrick will be wrestling at?
Yep, everyone's PO'd about the midget and the Mexican. I was too, until I figured out how to chill: Since I DVR, I use this button called FFWD. It's amazing! It also works when Morrison attempts a promo.
I love Ross' honesty, first off correctly mentioning a wrestler doesn't need to be huge, which we all know, but they don't have to be pretty to be a main eventer. Someone needs to let Vince in on that.
Also gotta love the dish on Bob Barker. The guy's like 88, and still gets the punani. He's my idol.
BTW, that prettiest thing doesn't just go for in-ring talent: I'm talking about announcers too. I'm pretty sure if they took a survey, at least 99% of fans would say give us someone who's entertaining, cuz all the pretty boys Vince keeps hiring are duller than dull. Where are the new Rosses, Lance Russels, Solies, Joey Styles? Oh yeah, Joey works for the WWE, doing something behind the scenes. Why? He's better than everyone but Ross and the heel Lawler. The face Lawler does not work for me, maybe after he loses the mayoral race in Memphis he'll go back to being cool.
I have to say I do agree with the general opinion towards Chavo v Hornswaggle. I enjoy a laugh as much as the next guy, probably more, and though I admire Chavo's willingness to be "the company man" he is also a talented and accomplished veteran in his own right, not to mention a member of a very respected wrestling family, and there's only so many times you can be humiliated by a midget before your worth as a wrestler goes right in the toilet.
I'm sorry to hear about Rey and his suspension. I'm gonna give the benefit of the doubt and assume the violation concerned pain killers and not steroids. Hopefully the time off will allow him the the opportunity to get better.
My best wishes to Jeff, I hope he enjoys his hiatus and I look forward to his eventual return, if he chooses to do so. I'm also looking forward to the return of Trish. I seriously do not see her making a turn as host and Not getting back into the ring. That should be fun.
JR, I am a huge mark for Dragon Gate, and I'm really excited to hear that you and the King will be onhand for their event this weekend. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the show. In fact, if you'll provide a write-up about the show on your blog, I'll place my first order for some of JR's beef jerkey. That's a promise. I know you don't need to make individual deals, but I'd seriously love to get your take on the Young Bucks, Davey Richards, and Masato Yoshino, to name just a few.
It's about time Danielson recieved some national exposure. Easily one of the most talented wrestlers I've ever seen, it's a shame this guy's not headlining major WWE ppv's.
Can't wait to see what the American Dragon does on the big stage!
Roll Tide!
i dont why wwe keeps going with chavo vs hornswoggle its a shame because i actually chavo has talent in him in evean bourne can have some good matches if they ever get to that program.raw has all the talent they just need to use them right .in im glad to see the undertaker back on smackdown that should make smackdown interesting .in im loking forward to seeing bob barker on raw maybe they have a raw roulette
Saw my first Superstars on WGN. Very nice. Seems years ago this kind of programming is what brought WWE to the Dance.
I agree Danileson is overdue. The best part..he is more than ready and not thrown in too quick.
Thank you my Brother for all of the updates. Your fans realize how busy you are and I think I speak for all that we appreciate your blogs (and your damn addicting best tasting BAR-B-QUE Sauce I have ever had...)
P.S. being an old Soldier, I have travelled the world 5 and one half times...your sauce is the best. Would have love to have had it in Africa when I lived on fried rice and bar b qued something for five months....we never ask what the "something" was.

Both the names are very reputable and I am a very big fan of both of them. Nowadays anabolic steroids for sale very common and almost every playing is using that to perform better than before.
Just heard the broadcast on 1560thegame.com great job!!!!!
Good to hear from you as always JR, i think i speak for many a wrestling fan when i say that your lifetime of knowledge and honest insight of this great buisness we all love is a treat for us. Thanks for sharing, and GOD Bless! - Kilgore
