The Fabulous Moolah Passes Away

Posted in:
Lillian Ellison, known professionally as The Fabulous Moolah, has passed away at her home in Columbia, SC. She was reported to be 84 years old. She called everyone “Darlin' ” and was a sweet hard working woman who loved this business and contributed greatly to it, promoting and teaching women to be good female wrestlers. Everyone had tremendous respect for Miss Lillian and all cared for her greatly. She was the classic “Southern Belle,” in that despite her athletic accomplishments in the ring, she was a lady and we all loved her. Moolah was the Women’s Champion nine times and held the title for 28 years. She was a significant part of WWE for many years, coming into national attention with the Cyndi Lauper music video before the first Wrestlemania and she was a main event performer for the company during that time period. Moolah dropped the WWF Women’s title to Sherri Martel in late 1987 and it marked the end of an era, although Moolah maintained a presence with the company the rest of her life. At the age of 76, she captured the Women’s Championship Title one more time from Ivory at the No Mercy ‘99 PPV, for an eight day run with the Women’s Title and she continued making appearances on WWE shows through this past Summerslam, where she made her final appearance with Vince McMahon, William Regal and Mae Young. Moolah was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1995 and released her autobiography in 2004. We’ll miss you, Lillian.

am really sad ´bout this legend female wrestler. I practically grew up watching fabulous moolahs and Sensational Sheris videos. A lovely time back in 80 with such high profile ladies.I will miss her and will always remember her in good light Rizwan farooqi

I checked out wwe.com and got the privilage to see the entire interview they did with John Cena. Before watching the documentary I was not necissarily the biggest Cena fan, but after watching the documentary he won me over, and I was totally pissed off at the way CNN edited what he said to make him look like a user of steriods. How do u feel about the way CNN handled and minipulated the interview? Many thanks! Marty

A true legend passed away. May she rest in peace.

Class - that says it all, the women was a great, classy, lovely woman. We miss you Moolah. Love Kenny.

A classy lady who will be missed. Thank you Moolah. God Bless.

Moolah was a true pioneer, not only for women in professional wrestling, she was also a role model and pioneer for all women athletes in all sports... When legends such as Moolah and Sherri have passed on, it is reminded what a privilege it is to see legends that are still here today such as Ric Flair, Jimmy Snuka, Randy Savage, or the Hulkster entertain us the fans. When the Hulkster beat Randy Orton (you know you have payed your dues when you have squared off with Bob Orton and later on his son)one moment that stuck to my mind was when the Hulkster blew a kiss to some "Little Hulksters" and seeing their faces light up makes be remember what made Hulkamania so special as well as legends that were apart of that era and before it.

Rest in peace Moolah, I have been a WWF/WWE fan for 22 years and Moolah has been there since day one. I remember Bob Ueker at WM3 bolting out of the broadcast booth upon sight of Moolah saying "I have to get with Moolah". I remember her great matches with Wendi Richter, Leilani Kei and Sherri Martel among others. I certainly remember her humorous antics with her partner in crime Mae Young, Moolah was the perfect straight "man" to Mae. Moolah will be missed, there will never be another like her.

Hey Jim, I'm saddened to hear about the passing of yet another one of wrestling's greats, my condolences are certainly sent out to all. My question is, do you think that the wwe is overusing the squash match. For example the glamazon defeated kelly kelly in litterally 20 seconds and snitsky beat some jober in about 10. I really love the wwe and that is why I continue to watch it, but i'm having a real hard time getting into it. What do you think should be done to increase interest?

JR this is a nice blog. And Fabulous Moolah will be miss.

She comes from a time when women's wrestling was purely wrestling; they weren't always the prettiest girls on TV, but they knew how to get it done in that ring; Many of the women in Moolah's time were tough and skilled enough to give most men a run for their money. I love watching some of Moolah's classic matches. She played her heel character so well, and in her later years, embraced her beautiful old age in very comedic skits that were always fun to watch as well(along with Mae Young). She will definately be missed. I'm also saddened and a little angered that TNA wrestling has mentioned nothing on Moolah's passing, on their website... I certainly hope they do on Thursday's "Impact". Her loss was felt in all of the professional wrestling world, not just the WWE.

Very nice piece JR. I know I will miss seeing Moolah on WWE programming along with Mae Young and her hijinx, trying to keep her under control :) I've seen classic videos of Moolah wrestling and she definitely put women's wrestling on the map. I'd be very surprised if any woman in the industry didn't look up to Moolah in some way, shape or form. We will miss you Moolah. God Bless.

To me Lillian will always be FABULOUS... Rest in Peace Darlin...you shall be missed

From one Columbian to another, rest in peace.

A true class act. Moolah is walking on the golden streets of heaven now.
