Start ShoppingHere's hoping that every one is having a great weekend. It's really nice weekend here in Norman, Oklahoma and college football fever is in the air. I attended a couple of functions with the Sooner football coaches this week and their summer is essentially over as practice starts next Wednesday, the day I return from Long Island, and they will hit it hard until National Signing Day in early February 2010. My goal is to attend every OU game, home and away, and I have already made travel arrangements to travel from Lincoln, Nebraska to Sheffield, England in November among other "interesting" road trips. These trips serve as "great escapes" and help me keep my sanity (no jokes please.) At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Today's Special.....BBQ'ed Random Thoughts....
UFC has yet to sign heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko to a deal after the Affliction promotion bit the dust. UFC sounds as if they have offered the fighter with a 30-1 record a truck load of cash but to no avail. From what I understand, Fedor's management team is trying to use their MMA company, M-1 Global, as leverage in this circus. UFC has nothing to gain by caving to Fedor's "people" and inflicting a "Plaxico Burress" by shooting themselves in the leg. UFC is doing an excellent job of home growing their stars and the future of their heavyweight division looks intriguing.
I went to a party Thursday night at my business partner's home that was a private, OU Football kickoff gathering. More of the men there wanted to talk about Brock Lesnar than any MMA fighter and MMA, in general, seemed to be the topic of the night. Only a handful of these sports fans had any tangible knowledge of who Fedor Emelianenko is. On a side note, many of my friends became bigger Lesnar fans after his UFC 100, post match comments including Brock's apology re: taking a shot at Bud Light. Strange how things are perceived and then how they work out. But that's another story.
Bottom line is this, if Fedor wanted to sign with UFC and cement his legacy and enhance his arguably padded 30-1 record he would do so. Great competitors always want to compete on the highest level and one could assume that Emelianenko would be no different. The excuse that "we couldn't get a deal done" feels more like a cop out than a reason.
Perhaps Fedor Emelianenko simply wants to pick his spots and his opponents whether it be in Japan or parts unknown and avoid the competition that awaits him in UFC.
If this deal doesn't get done then It's a damned shame if you ask me because I thought Fedor was a legit badass.
Actor Jeremy Piven will guest host Raw Monday night from the sold out Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Ct on what could be an unique night as it relates to Mr. Piven. The Entourage star and the star of an upcoming film that actually looks very funny is reportedly somewhat attitudinal. I only know what I read and I am not claiming that Piven is a tool, for the record. Nonetheless, as I wrote earlier, I hope that Piven is exactly like his character Ari Gold on the HBO's Entourage and "runs rough shod" on Monday night. In the old days many of the veterans would have clamored to see who could play the biggest rib on Piven or any other "celebrity" who came into the locker room area and acted any thing less than respectful to the biz.
How cool would it be for someone to make this introduction, "Mr. Piven please meet Mr. Fuji."
It will be fun to hear what stories actually do come out of Piven's experiences in WWE Monday night. I think while watching Raw that it will be easy to tell if Piven is on the show to have fun, like Shaq last week, or to simply promote his newest project.
"Mr. Piven please meet Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. He'll show you around."
Tito Ortiz is positively back in UFC after being angrily absent from the company. It seems like a fitting way to end what has been a tumultuous relationship with the company that made Tito rich and famous. I remember meeting Tito, who was attending a WWE event with Rick Bassman many years ago in Anaheim at the Pond, if memory serves me correctly, when Tito had an interest in discussing a potential career in WWE. Tito had/has a great look, charisma, is obviously very athletic and would have likely done very well in WWE. However, Tito's true calling is MMA and for an athlete to be able to perform only a few times a year for big bucks and not endure excessive travel is the only way for some athletes to go about their professional lives IE Brock Lesnar.
UFC 100 reportedly did over 1.5M pay per view buys which is a freakish number. It's amazing what happens when a personal issue is cultivated over a 17 month period between two men both of whom the consumer has made an emotional investment who then settle their angst physically.
It looks as if the Tuesday night WWE event in Long Island will be a packed house in the Nassau Coliseum. Does any one remember the WCW "Bunkhouse Stampede" that emanated from that arena back in the 80's? I remember it for, among other things, riding in a car with the late Jim Barnette, who like the cartoon character Mr. Magoo, he did not see well nor did he ever learn to drive, promoter Gary Juster, and, I think, broadcaster Tony Schiavone all getting lost driving out to the Island from probably La Guardia Airport. No GPS and no one wanted to stop and ask directions, the guy thing, and we wound up arriving a little late for work. Ah, but the show went on and the night seemed to last forever. Was the show that bad or has its perception changed in my mind after all these years?
Someone on our Q&A section asked me what the C.M. stands for in C.M. Punk. Beats the hell out of me but I have heard "Cookie Monster," "Championship Material," and "Chicago Made." Take your choice or make up your own rendition.
Helluva match Friday night on Smackdown between World's Champ Jeff Hardy and John Morrison. I watched this match as it aired and then again right afterwords on DVR and I rarely do that. Really innovative stuff, the guys took their time and had the time, the in ring action was compelling, and we had a winner and a loser. Wow.
Plus, the crowd emotionally invested into this main event even though it was two fan favorites competing which has been known to damper a live audience's emotion. Not this time.
The SD crew should be commended for their efforts on Friday night's show as it was a really solid team effort from start to finish and overall a fun show of which to be a part.
It made another, damn airplane ride worth the trip.

fedor is not a fan of fighting and has said on a few occasions he doesn't particularly enjoy doing it. i imagine this has a great deal to do with his seeming indifference toward his "legacy".
it's also worth noting that fedor owns a considerable share of m1 global so it's not so much that he's controlled by them as he is personally invested in their success.
also you've mentioned a number of times that it's a "when not if" scenario re: fedor getting beaten (again), but he may well retire after this run in strikeforce (during which i don't think he will lose). rickson gracie retired undefeated, as did rocky marciano.
Piven was entertaining on Raw. It seemed like he was actually interested in trying to make it entertaining for the fans.. I laughed pretty hard at his heel turn at the end lol.
I caught Fox and Friends this morning and they showed a clip of Piven on Raw.. I thought to myself oh nice some good publicity there.. till one of the anchors said ''Oh is he hard up for cash or something?''.. People with no respect for the business and no respect for the fact that more people watch wrestling then watch their show just aggravates me.
I still am digging the celebrity host thing for now anyways.. when they start getting like D actors and reality stars then it's time to stop. ZZ Top was pretty lame i'm sorry to say. I don't like the whole 80's wrestlers as hosts thing only because it's kinda hard to make something really entertaining for them story wise. Making the A-list celeb be put in awkward positions is funny for the time being, but i'm sure it's easier said then done to book that many A-listers on such short notice.
Come on... Look at the laundry list of people that Fedor has beaten IN THEIR PRIMES mind you. All of which he won, minus a Dr. stoppage that he came back to avenge that "loss." Brock has 5 fights, 1 of which he lost. The people he has beaten are not nearly as impressive. Couture is a big name, but unfortunately past his prime. I also think Couture would have won if he didn't get caught. Brock was looking tired.
No offense, but you are praising UFC left and right and Fedor's people have stated in the past that their contracts are "ridiculous." I can't speak from my own knowledge because I haven't seen a UFC contract, but the last time they negotiated, it wasn't money that held Fedor from going in, but a bunch of contractual stipulations that other organizations do not bind you to.
Anyway, saying Fedor is trying to duck Brock is a little silly. He'll fight anyone they put in front of him, and no offense once again... Brock is a joke in this very dismal UFC heavyweight pool. Sure there are some up and comers, but right now... There's a problem when you have to say that Heath Herring, Frank Mir, Randy Couture and Antonio Noguiera are your BEST fighters in 2009. That would've sounded great 5 years ago. Not today. Brock has no competition and once Fedor beat him, he wouldn't etiher. Sure, they'd make a lot of money as Fedor trampled all over these names above 1 after the other... Annnnnnnnd, I woudln't have minded that outcome... But I"m sorta glad he's in Strikeforce. They will get the best fighters outside of UFC, and there are a lot, and they will put them in the ring with Fedor, even if it means giving someone a 1 fight contract to make it happen without all that UFC red tape.
Just my opinion...
P.S. Sorry about bugging a couple times about getting Savage back. But, he's the man... He and The Rock have always been my top two "mic" men. That's why I watch WWE. The characters... Not so match the redundant matches... And Savage is VERY interesting to listen to. Ohhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhh! Freak out yeah!!!!

J.R. Fedor shouldn't be afraid of Brock or any MMA heavyweight, because he has way more experience as a top MMA heavyweight than Brock Lesnar. I think it's a matter of politics, because M-1 Global wants to be partners with UFC for any event involving Fedor, which is of course crazy. I think the casual MMA fan has no idea who Fedor is. It's the people who follow the sport on a regular basis that are aware of who he is. I don't think we're going to see Brock-Fedor anytime soon, I'm sad to say. Fedor is a legit badass, look what he did to Arlovski. I watched Allied Powers: World's Greatest TagTeams DVD set, and was impressed, but one minor detail. Arn & Ole Anderson aren't brothers, as listed in the DVD set, when Arn replaced Gene in the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. They were billed as nephew and uncle I believe, with Ric Flair being Arn's cousin I think. Ole & Gene Anderson were billed as brothers, when they wrestled together.

Great story and I can't WAIT for OU Football to start on the 5th. I know that Stephen and Ben are ready to knock some heads. Wish I was there to see Alexander get his motor on. Also can't wait to hear Tommy tell me about GK and Good going at it and how many times Stephen was beaten and how many times he pancakes GK!!! Also can't wait to get out there on 9/10 to have some of your great BBQ. Wish that you had a place up here in CT.
Boomer Sooner...people that are worry about OU's young offensive line are worrying about the wrong things. I am much more concerned about our schedule than I am the O-Line. Good and Habern are the real deal. Looking forward to seeing you in Norman. I'm headed to practice Sunday afternoon of which I feel very blessed.
I went "internet" on you with the sensational headline. I know that Fedor isn't afraid of Lesnar. I also know that UFC would be foolish to give in to another, fledgling, MMA company's demands to help them gain more exposure and grow. Fedor is the first world class athlete that has said that he doesn't care about his legacy. I'll take him at his word. Thanks for the feedback.
CM originally stood for "Chick Magnet", and goes all the way back to his early indies days as part of a tag team. Punk likes making stuff up though so over the years he has said "Cookie Monster", "Charles Manson", "Crooked Moonsault", among others I'm sure, when asked what the CM stood for over the years.
Regardless I like the idea that it's "Chicago Made" in the WWE. Championship Material isn't bad either. I'm just happy CM Punk was allowed to keep his indie name and cringe what wwe trademarkable ring name he might have been given otherwise. CM Punk should buy Paul Heyman dinner whenever he sees him.
Fedor Emilianenko vs Brock Lesnar would have been epic. I know the Mir/Lesnar PPV drew over 1.5M to PPV, but imagine if a network ponied up to get Fedor/Brock on free television...
i believe i read an interview a while back that C.M. Punk stands for Chicago Made Punk.
