Football Predictions and A Story or Two

I love this time of the year. It’s football season and it is football weather!! Gosh it is great to be alive and living in Oklahoma. For almost 20 years, I spend every Friday night during football season wearing an officials uniform and enjoying the Friday night lights of Oklahoma high school football. I had more fun doing it than just about anything I have ever done in my life. I miss it every week during the season. Former OU player and former Sallisaw Black Diamond Kelly Mitchell stopped by our BBQ trailer before a Sooner home game recently and told me a story about me calling Kelly for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during Kelly’s senior year of high school in eastern Oklahoma. Football is king on Friday night’s in town like Sallisaw and hundreds of others in the Sooner state. Kelly was a big, tough lineman who said some “magic words” and got nailed for 15 yards by yours truly. Big Mitchell then picked up my flag and threw it up in the air in anger and disgust. I had forgotten about that play to be honest with you. I asked Kelly what happened then and he said “you walked over very calmly and picked up your flag and threw it again! I got TWO 15 yard, dead ball penalties!” To make matters worse, the Black Diamonds coach burned a time out to ask me what had been said. I told him and reminded him he had one time out left in this huge district game where a wasted timeout was a no-no. Standing in front of the home team’s bleachers, I felt like a wrestling villain as the curse words and emotion poured out of the loyal Sallisaw fans. All ended without incident as Sallisaw won the game and Kelly Mitchell was not ejected, I’ve worked with some officials who would have tossed him, and earned a football scholarship to Oklahoma University. Ah, the good old days. I went to Adrian Peterson’s first press conference since breaking his collar bone last Saturday versus Iowa State and AD was positive and said he was praying nightly to heal quickly so he could return and play another game or two for the Sooners. The Wednesday press conference did not address AD’s NFL plans as many in the media thought they “had” to know as if it was a mystery. Adrian’s as good as gone as he will be a top three pick in the 2007 draft and will become a very rich young man before he ever carries the pigskin in the National Football League. But AD does want to play again with his teammates one or two more times if possible as a Sooner. I admire his burning desire to contribute to the OU program and his competitiveness. Even more, I admire Peterson’s love of his teammates who have become many of his best friends. Peterson is arguably the greatest running back to ever play at OU even though he has had injuries hamper each of his three seasons here. AD is about 150 yards away from breaking the great Billy Sims’, a Heisman Trophy winner, all time rushing record for the Sooners. The Sooners play a dangerous Colorado team this Saturday night. The Buffs are 1-6 but it is a deceiving 1-6. I look for OU to win a dog fight with vanted #28 looking on from the OU sideline. OU by less than the spread of 12. OSU pulled one out of the fire last week in Kansas and I look for the Cowboys, who finally get to play at home, to beat Texas A&M, in a close game. OSU is favored I assume because they are at home but the Aggies are playing for their coaches job and are talented. This one really could go either way quite easily but I lean toward the Orange and Black on this one. I picked Tulsa to win on the road last week and was right for a change. I stay with the Golden Hurricane this week who travel to Memphis. Tulsa wins again and Coach Steve Kragthorpe becomes an even more attractive candidate to lead someone else’s program next year. If TU fans were smart they would start buying tickets to Golden Hurricane football games and filling up Skelly Stadium. Texas is favored by only 6 1/2 at Nebraska. Mack Brown can out coach Billy Callahan in his sleep and the Horns are tough and seasoned, except at QB but Colt McCoy is playing like a veteran. if Tom Osborne were on the Big Red sideline I could see an upset but not this Saturday. Texas wins big. Texas Tech with the mad scientist Mike Leach at the helm has been a little unpredictable this season especially after scoring only 6 points last week against Colorado (beware OU). Leach will light a fire under his guys and win at Iowa State who doesn’t defend the pass too well. Tech wins a close one on the road or Dan McCarney proves he is indeed one of college football’s best motivators. Alabama at Tennessee only needs the legendary Lindsey Nelson or Curt Gowdy to have the call of the game to be a classic SEC autumn classic between two storied programs. Offensive coordinator David Cutcliff has saved Phil Fulmer’s job it would seem for the Vols and I look for Tennessee to win at home by two TD’s. Hopefully the Sooners can hammer Colorado early and often with a surprising running game lead by as many as three new faces at the running back position. Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson called a masterful game last Saturday against ISU mixing up the plays and taking what the defense offered. I look for that exact philosophy this Saturday night on Fox Sports. This Saturday night the defense must swarm, smoother, and harass Colorado as Sooner defensive team’s in the past have. HOpefully the Oklahoma defense will play with continued passion and tackle as they are taught. OU cannot give Colorado hope and allow this game to be close going into the 4th quarter. I talked to Dusty Dvorachek and to Tommie Harris both of the Chicago Bears this week. The former OU defensive tackles and two of Coach Jackie Shipp’s star pupils follow every move the Sooners make while earning big bucks with the Bears. harris has been virtually unblockable this season while Dusty is on the IR and will be a starter at D-Tackle next season after undergoing season ending foot surgery. Tommie may be on the Sooner sideline this Saturday night in Norman. I will see both the ex-Sooners this Monday night in Chicago for our WWE TV broadcast of Monday Night RAW on the USA Cable network. My guess is that the Bears will have great seats. If you are in Norman at the game Saturday drop by our BBQ Trailer which, as always, is set up in front of the old field house just outside the north end of the stadium. Take care and enjoy a great weekend of football no matter who your favorite team may be. J.R.

JR... I am anxious to hear your prediction on this weekends OU/MIZZOU game. As a Mizzou alum I feel like our team is still largely ignored by the national media. I hope you enjoy Columbia but not the outcome of the game. We have one of the larger tailgates in A lot and we will be going strong by 9 AM. We usually get a few visiting fans to stop by and a legendary figure such as yourself would be more than welcome!

Hey JR how are you doing? I just have 2 questions for you: 1-Did you watched TNA's PPV Bound For Glory and what you thought of the PPV? 2-What do you think of Sting being the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion?

JR, with Kragthorpe tearing it up at Tulsa, plus Cutcliffe being arguably the highest-profile coordinator in Div 1-A right now, do you see both of them taking ACC head coaching jobs next season? Bunting is now out at UNC, and I'm thinking Coker and maybe Amato will be out as well.

Hello JR, I'd just like to say thank you for, not only your service, but more importantly, your level of honesty and respect, to and for, the fan. Your abilities awe me, but your the quality of your character inspires me. I know that WWE is not excessively keen on hiring "fan boys", which I don't think I qualify as, but I am a lifer and am failry well versed in the history and inner-workings of the business. My dream is to work in the WWE: in any capacity, in any department. I will be graduating from SMU in the next twelve months with a degree in political science, and am trying to determine the trajectory of my life. It's assumed I will go in the "family business"(my father is the 2nd largest McD's Owner-Operator in the US with 62 stores, in addition to two fine-dining Italian establishments, and currently in the process of developing a 5-Star steakhouse, all of which are in the DFW area) In all honesty, while I've made a number of contributions and have enhanced almost every facet of our fast food restaurants, I honestly feel I have a calling to be in the wrestling business(though, most definetly, not as in-ring talent.) I'll work in the mail room, be a janitor in Titan Towers, whatever takes to get on the team. I just finished Eric Bischoff's auto-bio, and I'm, somewhat naively, operating under the assumption, if I could just get a foot in the door, I would be able to find a multitude of ways to enhance the fan/viewer/guest experience. That my "coaches" would see a talent and a knack for the business, that could be used in ways beyond the tasks I was initially hired to do. My question to you JR is, how best, could I manage to get a foot in the door? Whatever it takes, JR., because in my heart of hearts, I believe it is my true calling. Take care JR, Michael

hey jr, the sooners played a great game, malcolm kelly, jacob guiterrez, and allen patrick played a great game, and i am impressed with thompson. it was nice to see ad there giving advice to alot of the players. i know i cant write ad a letter but when you talk to him tell him that im praying for his recovery, and cant wait to see him out there again, and to me he is the heisman trophy winner. also sometime when wwe is back in san antonio i would like to treat you to lunch if its ok. take care and have a good show in chicago.

Hey, Jim: I'm a freshman at Ohio University, (one of the OTHER O.U's) I am in with an undecided major. I've considered a possible career as a sportscaster, similar to what you do on a weekley basis in the WWE. I've watched you for about 5 years now. May I ask how you got into sportscasting? and what kind of things you did to become a sportscaster. Thanks, man. --Gabe Ross Athens, Ohio

J.R. Thank you for your prompt reply for my inquiry last week. I am an ardent supporter of Boise State and this weekend we take on our rivals the University of Idaho, Coached by Dennis Erickson. Much like Colorado, They have a deceiving record. With Dan Hawkins though, coaching the Buffaloes for the first season, I dont think that he is used to the ultra competitive Big Ten Conference, where as Strength of Schedule is much greater than that of a WAC school. I dont see these guys being the upstart against OU, but 12 sounds about right. RAW #700 is much more predictible though, as it will kick ass! Thanks JR

Hello Friend, Hey,I just went back a couple of blogs and I saw something pretty interesting. If you do not know already, search for the name Rich Koz in one of your blogs.Click on the name and a cool suprise awaits.I met this guy once and he was so cool and he has a great show.Take care.

JR, Just got done watching Smackdown. Their tag team division just got a healthy shot in the arm with the debut of Dave Taylor, paired once again with William Regal. I remember when these two tagged in WCW. Taylor hasn't lost a step, and I'll be the first one to predict he & Regal could be the ones to unseat Brian Kendrick & Paul London as tag team champs, perhaps by the end of the year. Come to think of it, a tag match involving Taylor & Regal vs. Elijah Burke & Sylvester Turkay would be worth watching, too. Cryme Tyme's debut on Raw was interesting, getting thrown right into the tag team title hunt vs. the Spirit Squad. The tag titles are rarely defended on Raw anymore, such that it's like Heat, on the verge of extinction if no one's paying attention. Speaking of Heat, this is a record. Three straight weeks without any matches taped for Heat?! Hopefully, this isn't the end. If it is, perhaps the slot could be filled by giving WWE fans a little lowdown on the farm system (OVW/Deep South), just to give the fans an idea of how current stars like Cena, Batista, Burke, etc., rose through the ranks. Agree or disagree? Turning to football, I'd like to get your opinion on the brawl between Miami & Florida International last weekend. On ESPN earlier this week, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti suggested Miami be given the "death penalty" because this is the 3rd on-field incident involving the football team in the last year. It may be a little harsh, but if school administration doesn't do anything to curb the street gang mentality--embodied by player-turned-announcer Lamar Thomas, who was fired for his insensitive and incendiary comments--the NCAA may be forced to take severe, punitive action. Agree or disagree? Last subject--movies. WWE Films' 1st two projects have involved familiar, safe genre formulas. See No Evil was a horror flick that to critics must've been variation #1042 in a series. The Marine is a standard-issue actioner, plain & simple, but was trashed by a critic for the NY Post simply because it was a WWE film. The Post has a history of trashing WWE, and at one time had PTC Chairman Brent Bozell writing an op-ed column, so they have their agenda, which shouldn't cloud their judgment, but it does. Agree or disagree? Thanx for reading.

Hey JR! In response to Sam Smith, that video was very funny! LOL! I too have a video. Do you remember any road stories with Michael Cole as well? http://youtube.com/watch?v=qpe1Atcd0E0 This video has Michael Cole cussing out a caller from his radio show. In your opinion, did you find both of those videos very funny?

Hey J.R., It's a real shame about AD! Imagine how many yards he'd have rushed for without all those injuries. Might have even shattered the NCAA record. I hope he gets a chance to come back and at least play in a bowl game, that'd be a great send off for one of the finest runners in college football history! If you get a chance sometime before mid-November I'd love to get your thoughts on the big Ohio State-Michigan game. Should be a real slobberknocker, and definitely one with national title implications!!!

Hi, thanx for the football blogs. You make me incredibly jealous. I am so bust with school and work and my son (I'm a single parent), I don't get to watch my tv or football, so the only thing I bother recording is wrestling. But I soooooooo look forward to seeing you on tv. Tell the King I said hello and I pray I get to meet you someday and maybe try your bar-b-que. Take care and GOD BLESS.

lindsey nelson = class. My beloved mets' (talk about a black hat day for me, sir) original troika of nelson, ralph kiner and the epitome of broadcasting grace, bob murphy are as agood a booth to call any sport as ever took up a mic, in my opinion.

Go Vols!

Hello Friend, I am hoping and praying I get the chance to meet you this Monday at the Allstate Arena!!I will be sporting one of my Oklahoma duds and probably the only one with a Jim Ross sign.Go Sooners!!!

Hay Jr do watch NFL football? If so what do you think of the Kansas City Chifs? sorry if that's not splled right. I'am a fan cause that's sort of my hometown team.

JR, Honestly, you couldn't remember kicking out Kelly Mitchell? Seriously, didn't you have to leave Sallisaw in an armored truck? Kidding aside, I would have had to remember an incident such as that. Tulsa is going to roll Memphis. I think Tennial will have a 100 yard rushing day as well. Do I have to tell you again why Tulsans don't go out to see their local sports teams? Tulsa will be lucky to sell out Skelly Stadium once this year. Since you are being modest on the OU/CU game, I will go ahead and say it. OU is going to destroy CU. CU and Vince McMahon's theme song have something in common, No Chance in Hell. Next week, you are going to have to start picking U of La-Lafayette games. Come on, it's an old Mid South stomping ground. By the way, you got to have some good Goldmine stories. Care to share them? Take care and enjoy your football weekend! Darius K. Shahreza

I haven't read your book where you included some stories about your time in the business, but I plan to, and I would love to read a full autobiography some day if you decide to. But do you have any interesting road stories or ribs you'd like to share? How about any Jim Cornette stories? http://youtube.com/watch?v=Id4rZhN_LEg This is a video of him cursing out a Dairy Queen girl for late service. Man, is he hot as hell. From 1994, there is a lot of profanity. Sorry if this is out of place.

JR I know you are a huge college football fan and a big time OU guy, do you have an NFL team that you root for? I'm a big time Buffalo Bills fan since I grew up in that neck of the woods as a kid, even though I don't think I will be moving back to Upstate NY after I finish college.
