Friday Update...Random Thoughts..UFC 109..Jack Brisco's Services..

Thanks for stopping by on what is one of the biggest weekends of the year. Let's start the BBQ!

UFC 109 is this Saturday night in Vegas on PPV. I wish I was going to be there but I'll definitely be watching on pay per view. Obviously the focal point of this event will be the fight pitting two MMA HOF'ers going at it when former Oklahoma State mat star and MMA legend Randy Couture battles another veteran  and legend, Mark Coleman. Coleman has so much to gain professionally and personally if he can beat Couture which MMA fans no doubt are aware and is what makes this main event such an emotional one.

I'm told that actor/director Robert DeNiro, who is a big Couture fan, may be in attendance. This should an exciting night from start to finish and I'm looking forward to spending my Saturday night with the UFC.

Curious to see if Brock Lesnar appears at the event. If I had to guess, I would speculate "no." I do hear that the lethal Lesnar would like to fight Couture again for the Heavyweight Title if Randy is successful against Coleman. If talkative Frank Mir can continue to win and Brock does as well in addition to continuing to get 100% healthy, Lesnar vs. Mir will be huge.

The Super Bowl is Sunday..duh..and my head says the Colts win and cover the spread. My heart is pulling for the Saints so that's who I'm picking. There are too many former Sooners playing with New Orleans for me to pick them to lose plus after enduring Hurricane Katrina one has to believe that N.O. is due the ultimate prize for their beloved and embattled NFL franchise.

Fozzy is rocking literally and figuratively. Chris Jericho's band is red hot and their new music is making headlines in the music world. I follow Chris on Twitter and his updates are funny and informative.

You can follow Ol J.R. on Twitter at http://twitter.com/JRsBBQ.

Lately I've posted on a variety of subjects including my new favorite, late night TV show, Chelsea Lately, TLC's Pit Masters, the NFL, TV commercials, wrestling, and female, hoops officials.

Contrary to what some Emailer's have asked me, I never drink and Tweet.

Reconnected with my old friend Tim McClelland who is the most respected umpire in MLB. Tim and I attended umpire school together in 1976.  He's been in the "bigs" for many years and is one of my dearest buddies. I am going to take a road trip or two this MLB season to watch my pal work and to enjoy the cold beverages after the game and tell a few stories from both our many days on the road.

Can someone explain to me the wrestling fascination, male and female, with tattoos? What am I missing? I'm not anti ink but does anyone else feel that that some grappler's are on borderline overkill with their body art?

Another small pet peeve are the "logos" some wrestlers have on the ring attire that not even the DEA could decipher. If  logos can't be ID'ed on TV then what value does it have. If wrestler's logos do have a meanings, then why don't the broadcasters tell us?

Saw a really cool photo from a recent wrestling convention in LA depicting Bruno Sammartino, Nick Bockwinkel, Stan Hansen, and Larry Zybszko. I'm never done a wrestling convention or reunion in my career but am interested in them if nothing else to simply go as a fan.

I will be at the Cauliflower Alley Club function in April in Las Vegas of which I greatly look forward to attending.

The memorial service for WWE HOF'er Jack Brisco will be this Thursday in Tampa at 1 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church, 5225 North Himes. I expect to see many friends of the Brisco's there to pay their respects to the best pure athlete to ever be NWA Champion.

Jack held 34 singles titles in his career, 21 tag titles w/ brother Jerry, and 4 tag titles with others.

Get this, on December 12, 1966 in Tulsa, Jack's first wrestling territory, Jack and one of his two boyhood heroes, Lou Thesz, defeated the masked Assassins, Joe Hamilton and Tom Renesto, to win the United States Tag Team Titles. I was 14 years old and remember that match being talked about on our local TV.

I will be updating the Q&A section of this site asap. Just a head's up for those inquiring minds that feel that need to know the details for my future career plans, and thanks for being interested, I choose to not discuss that matter but suffice to say I am not concerned about that aspect of my life whatsoever.

Thanks for stopping by and, hopefully, you'll be placing some orders from our store. I can assure you that we take your support of this website seriously and sincerely appreciate your business.

Got my package of  hot and reg barbecue sauce and the chipotle ketchup, how about a habanero ketchup JR? Also, I just received the blog from 2/05 and today is 2/19. What's up with that? Must be a server issue...Sauces and ketchup are awesome by the way!

I have no idea what the fascination with tats are either, although my son has several, but they all have a meaning for him. Some tats are cool, if done correctly and with a meaning to them. I especially like Rey Mysterios ink. The ones I find down right ugly(IMO) are Randy Orton's. I can't even tell what they are, his sleeves in particular. I would really like to see all of Rey's and know what they mean.

I live in the Bay Area, which is probably the tattoo and piercing capital of the US if any place is - It's rare to see a person under the age of 25 who doesn't have some kind of tattoo or piercing - some people are pretty extreme in their body modifications - stretched necks, ears, etc.

Lucky for me I mainly find them at least interesting and often attractive, though I don't have any myself.

So rest assured, JR, that this is a trend among hip young people - and not specific to wrestlers at all.

How do people pay for it?  How do people have nice cars?

I believe that the simple answer is "money"

I  don't understand the fascination with tatoos either but I least I know the wrestlers are paying for theirs themselves.  What I wonder about is the ones that college althletes have and where are they getting the funds to pay for them because those types of tatoos do not come cheap.

hey good ol JR, I just want to know when you going to return to annoucing again? Do you prefer to go back to Smackdown? or Raw? or are you just waiting out your contract? I also heard that Eric Bishoff is wanting you in TNA.... are you going to go to TNA or will you continue on with the WWE? Though you know you could pitch an idea to Vince about making you the Raw GM each monday night... i bet you would make a bunch of good snobblerknocker matches... any way hoping to see you back on TV soon...

As far as body art, I think it just depends on the quality of the artwork.  I've seen a lot of ugly tats, and nothing is quite as unflattering as an ugly tattoo, especially if you have them in mass quantity.

I personally don't like tribal tats, or neck tats but I think you can look great with a ton of tats depending on the quality.

Randy Orton is a good example of someone with a lot of tats but still looks good.  I think his new "sleeves" look excellent, and you can tell he hired a top notch artist.

Also I think Frank Mir's new tat looks great, although I think getting a tattoo of your own name is pretty silly.  but a lot of these are just personal preference.

I love tattoos, and if I didn't have to worry about people's perception of me in my career field I would definately get both arms covered.
