Happy New Year to All. this is my 2nd blog today with the first being devoted to the late, Steve Dr. Death" Williams. I hope that you will check it out.

Here's a few random thoughts...

I enjoyed my brief but eventful trip to El Paso for the Sun Bowl which resulted in a Sooner victory over a very good Stanford Cardinal team. The trip to El Paso from OKC was scheduled to take less than three hours including changing planes in Dallas' Love Field but due to mechanicals and oversold flights my journey took over 12 hours. Miserable experience on Southwest Airlines which is actually one of my favorite carriers. It was simply 'one of those days" and the bottom line is that I made it to El Paso, had dinner with my coaching friends and others, and then had a fun time at the game.

El Paso has a ton of wrestling fans living there and even though I have not be a part of Monday Night Raw since the summer of 2008 I was sort of amazed with how many folks that I met just had to tell me their favorite JR/Raw story. Pretty cool stuff on a day that I needed to smile and have a good laugh. The folks with the Sun Bowl committee made me feel at home and brought back many great memories.

I even met a high school football coach there who played high school basketball in Oklahoma back in the day in Muldrow, Oklahoma who I once gave a technical foul in a basketball game. He couldn't wait to share that story with me and those in the hospitality suite and from the way he told it he had recited it on many occasions. Small world, huh?

I went to a restaurant/bar, L&J's I think, that was right next to a cemetery and opened in 1927 which was a unique and memorable experience. If I had drank all the beers that folks there wanted to buy me I would have never made it to the game the next day. Luckily, I kept it in moderation plus I wasn't driving. Too bad the kitchen was closed as I hear the food there is really good.

The Tommy Dreamer send off on ECW was nicely done. It is good to see a guy who has dedicated so much of his life to the business and who has been a fan forever to be acknowledged as Tommy was Tuesday night. Kudos to WWE for facilitating the opportunity for "Big Beefy" to say adiós to his fans. Tommy would have made it in any generation including the territory days as his work ethic and toughness would have been welcomed attributes for any promoter. Congrats Tommy, you made all of us Old Schoolers proud. 

Ric Flair called me during the Christmas Holidays and was in great spirits. "Naitch" really loved wrestling in Australia and I expect Ric to continue to wrestle for as long as he is able albeit not on a regular schedule nor should he. Ric Flair is "special" and his success outside the ring with his "Whoo" endorsements with various state lotteries is going great guns for him. Ric is also working in the Carolinas with Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, and Kroger's Grocery stores.

It looks as if the Memorial Celebration for Steve "Dr. Death" Williams will be held next Friday in Lakewood, Colorado at the Mile High Church. Details are still being formulated and should be finalized the first of the week and most likely on Monday. As soon as we have the info we will pass it along. 

The goal is to set up a college scholarship fund for Steve's 16 year old son Wyndham in lieu of flowers, etc. More info to come.

Quick story about tough love and coaching the old fashioned way...which apparently and unfortunately did not work for Texas Tech's Mike Leach or Kansas' Mark Mangino...when Doc got the 108 stitches in his eye in the infamous TV bout with Brad Armstrong the stitch work was done by a neurologist because of the placement of the cut near the eyeball...Cowboy Bill Watts told Doc that Steve would feel better when Doc got back into the ring the next night after making the nice, little drive from Shreveport to Biloxi. Doc kept his commitment, made the long car trip in agonizing pain and wrestled the next night. 

Have a safe and happy New Year. It's time for my annual meal of black eyed peas (for health) and collard greens (for wealth) that many of us Southerners eat every January 1st. Plus, I need to get back to the bowl games. Life is good and remember to always count your blessings. God Bless.

I'm sad to hear of "Dr. Death" passing away. I watched him when I was a little boy back on Mid-South Wrestling. His matches with Terry Gordy were his best In my opinion. I'm glad that the Sooners won. Now if they can keep on winning this next season. Having Bret Heart host Raw hopefully will not be the last time we see him in front of a camera for a while. I will be placeing an order from your store this week for some b-b-q sauce.

Hello Jim

All of Colorado's sports fans should remember this wonderful athelete and man fondly. I remember Steve from my brother's wrestling days at Bear Creek. I hung out with Steve and my brother a few times and followed his entire career. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of his Mother, Son, Brothers and friends.

Please post any updated information on the memorial service as I'd like to attend if possible.

if Flair is so focused on still wrestling why did he have the retirement match and WWE give him such a great send off? I'm pretty sure that he still could have stayed competitive in the WWE. Also very sad to hear about DR Death, I only really remember him for the two storylines you mentioned JR but I know he was a great guy and a really solid worker. RIP

JR I read you great entry On Doc and was touched!!!! I met Steve in April 2008 in California!!! I pastor a small Church and we had a wrestling event to raise money for a food center that my wife and i are the directors of!!! Steve was one of 8 legends that we had there!!! Ted Dibase. George the Animal Steele to name a couple!!! My son and I picked up Doc from the airport and within 20 mins of our ride home I had fallen in love with Steve Williams!!! My wife and children feel the same way!!! What a gentle giant he was!!! His love for God and his son were so evident that I have tears as I type this!!! Doc texted me on Christmas Eve and asked me to pray because he was in the hospital!!! Of course I did and my Church did as well!!! You know in life you think about meeting a celebrity or an athlete and the experience isn't all that great!!! Let me say that meeting Steve Williams was more than I could have ever dreamed of!!! I took him to a Christian High School here in our town and he spoke to the kids about life and cancer. He was gentle and a giant at the same time!!! I will never forget Dr Death of became Dr Life!!! He is in the presence of Jesus and I am looking forward to seeing him again someday where he will truly be cancer free!!!!! God bless .  Pastor Jim

Mr. Ross Like Im sure u are too I am deeply saddened about the passing of Steve Dr. Death Williams. Mr Williams as I called him until he asked me to stop lol. Has meant so much to my very very young wresting career(ive got 1 year in) in March it will be one year since I met this great man in my hometown of Kewanee IL he came in to give a seminar and to be apart of a indy show that day was my first ever training session I wasnt quite sure that day how dedicated i would be but after listening to him for two hours then getting in the ring and locking up with him. And him letting me pick his brain for close to another hour I knew that like Roddy Piper has said I got the sickness deeply inbedded in me he got me started on the greatest year of my life cause of him I sought out another Indy promotion and have gotten in with them i finished my training and started on ring crew which i still do for them even when wrestling on the card i still help set up and tear down I love doing it. I have all this thanks to Dr. Death. Everything I will ever get to do in my career which may or may not include wresting for wwe (u never know) I will owe to that one special day where I got to mee this great great man.

 

Anyways I just thought Id share this with u.

I don't expect a response to this I just wanted to share this story with u cause like yours im sure is i know my life is definately better for having met Steve Williams.

I wanted to share with you that I answer questions for a text messaging question service, kgb_. You may have seen ads on TV, I think I may have seen them on WWE I forget.. I'm doing it to pay for wrestling school. 

 

Anyway, the reason I bring that up is people keep texting their questions asking will JR be coming back to Smackdown. My response: "JR had an episode with Bells Palsy, and said he likely will not return until some time around Wrestlemania."

 

Was that a fair assessment? People are asking about you, just thought you'd like to know!

You gonna watch the UFC tomorrow? The card kinda sucks, especially without Brock, but saturdays are boring now adays without something to watch.

Do you think Brock will ever come back? I hope he shuts Mir up for good haha.

Can't wait for Monday.
