Jeff Hardy Reality Show...Dennis Miller...Escape from Oklahoma...Benoit Better than Brisco?? Big Sale in Full Force

Posted in:

The weekend is upon us and I plan on spending ample time at JR's BBQ joint in Norman and watching plenty of football on TV. OU is off this weekend but all the Sooner faithful will be watching the Miami at Virginia Tech game Saturday afternoon as Oklahoma plays "The U" next Saturday in Miami. That's the day before the "Heck in a Cell" PPV in Newark which looks as if it has or is about to sell out. Nonetheless,  a man has to have his priorities so I will fly to Miami and catch the game and then go to work on Sunday. Here's some random thoughts that can easily be turned into covert comments or plain 'Ol dirt if you choose.

Tulsa's Smackdown event was the best attended, WWE event  ever in Tulsa. It helps to be in the biggest arena Tulsa has ever had, the impressive BOK Center, but a good accomplishment nonetheless. Some nimrods had some particularly stupid feedback to the column in the Tulsa World with not one mentioning the revenue the event created for the community. Some said the event was "heavily papered" which it was not.  Why some people despise the genre so much is beyond my comprehension but i don't read those kinds of comments when the circus or another touring show comes to town. I get that the product is not what it was years ago but when any event brings new money to any community it simply can't be "Satan's Traveling Road Show."  There were lots of kids in Tulsa who seemed to be having fun with their parents which isn't a bad thing. It's like the other day I heard a columnist for the "Daily Oklahoman," a newspaper that I regularly read, say that he "despised" wrestling and it made him sick but gave no reason why in a conversation that concerned the UFC in OKC.

Therefore I say the columnist is an idiot. I need not provide a  reason why.

WWE promoting events in Oklahoma is always good for the state and the respective cities the events are held but more specifically great for the fans of Oklahoma and the surrounding states who travel to see these performances. Personally, these events are challenging as folks come out of the wood work wanting tickets or other perks which sometimes can be overwhelming. Not to mention the fact that I rarely get out of an Oklahoma building unscathed with either the obligatory ass whipping or verbal shots.

The talented and caustic Dennis Miller says that he will be the guest host of Raw sometime this year. I doubt if that Monday Night Football thing will be addressed and hopefully not Miller's exploits on the O'Reilly Factor but if allowed to be the performer that he is I can see Miller providing some stinging verbal jabs.  I could easily see Miller, in character, as one of the most "despised" hosts on Monday night's show as in someone who would embrace Randy Orton or more importantly a young antagonist like Jack Swagger or The Miz.

I hear that the previously discussed Jeff Hardy reality show is still on the drawing board pending, I assume, the results of Jeff's legal entanglement being resolved. From what I hear,  the Jeff Hardy reality show concept is not dead.

It's hard to not have great respect for the athletic accomplishments of former Georgia Bulldog and NFL star Herschel Walker but Herschel's recent decision to venture into MMA at age 47 makes no sense. Is this a publicity stunt or is Walker truly serious about competing at a high level of MMA at his age? Why would any responsible promoter sign Walker to a contract of this nature unless it was merely for PR which will turn into negative ink if Herschel fights and gets embarrassed or injured. This is not a good move for MMA in general of which UFC takes the biggest hit because they are the biggest dog in the hunt.

College football coaches Urban Myer of Florida and Lane Kiffin of Tennessee need to stop bickering like kids and simply coach their football teams and represent their universities that are paying them big bucks in a honorable manner. Or, they can go on Monday Night Raw and be co-guest hosts and compete with the other Divas.

I saw a recent on line wrestling poll whose votes indicated that Chris Benoit was a FIVE TIMES better wrestler than Jack Brisco. Wow....must have been a bunch of really young voters who never saw Jack Brisco wrestle.  This is no knock to Benoit was Brisco in his prime was untouchable.

Two more WWE HOF suggestions would include Antonio Inoki and Ted "The Million Dollar Man" DiBiase. I hope that I just didn't jinx either man. Both men have made significant and diverse contributions to the business.

An emailer asked if I knew what special guests would appear on the 10th Anniversary of Friday Night Smackdown. My answer was that I have not heard a single name, nor have I asked or thought about the matter, so any fan's guess is as good as mine.  All I know is that I'm flying to Boston Monday evening and going to work Tuesday. I'm not even sure if all three announce teams are going to be present.

Speaking of Q&A's, I have updated a ton of them in recent hours/days for your review. There are some "classics" in this current crop.

Another emailer suggested a list of wrestlers he thought might defeat the Undertaker at a Wrestlemania event. I am an advocate of freedom of expression on this site, if it is in good taste, but I must disagree on this subject. I never see the Undertaker losing at any Wrestlemania event which means I may have just jinxed the "Deadman." Dammit! The Undertaker's undefeated streak at Wrestlemania is an organically created, marketing resource that can be utilized for years to come.

Loved this email...what's most likely to ocur...Bret Hart appearing on WWE TV or Fedor signing with UFC? Easily it's Bret Hart making an appearance on a WWE show as I never see Fedor signing with UFC under the ridiculous terms of his recent contract demands.

The UFC brand is bigger than any individual star on its roster and smart companies always keep themselves in that position.

Any talent in pro wrestling or MMA who feels that they are bigger than the brand for which they work and are more important than the team on which they play should be quickly facilitated to play elsewhere.

I expect the Reverend Al Sharpton, therefore WWE, to garner a ton of pub from Reverend Al's Raw appearance Monday night. The post Raw comments from media talking heads all over the country will be significant as Sharpton is a lightning rod for publicity and his voice has been heard at the forefront of many controversial topics. I can easily see where Reverend Al Sharpton might become the most controversial guest host to ever appear on Raw. From Cedric the Entertainer to Reverend Al Sharpton is quite the segue of diverse personalities.

This weekend I hope that you will take the time to browse in our on line store and take advantage of our specials that feature FREE SHIPPING. We appreciate your support of our site via the purchasing of our products. Thank you.

PS...I'm going with Miami (-2.5) over Va. Tech....Arkansas to cover 17 versus Alabama....take the over in the Houston-Texas Tech game...and consider Notre Dame -7 over Purdue.

Hello JR, now to the person who trashed on you earlier, i think that person just needs to go take their medication and calm down. One point that is kind of true is that people do come here to read your blog about wrestling or to see if their queston was answered. I'm one that ask really good questons but hardly ever get an answer. The only reason i ask you a queston is because i value your opinion and would love to know what you think. It's no big deal to me because i don't live my life around JR's bbq, but maybe, and this is just a suggestion, you could try to answer more of the questions asked because you could get more people to come to your site knowing that their question is going to be answered. I did notice that some questons get a really short answer or a repeat answer, and sometimes it's just left blank with the queston but no answer while really good questons are deleted and not answered. I'm not going off on you like the other person, just a simple rant. Anyway, keep up the good work.

A week ago I posted a thought about WWE becoming complacent and stagnate about the product in compairson to WCW. ie: The Cena/Orton four year fued left over from OVW, Rey " The Underdog" never jobs unless he fails a drug-test, C.M. Punk (Who knows maybe a hand-full of wrestling moves) gets the title. Hardy could have had the same matches with a wooden dummy. Chavo jobs to the midget making a mockery of his wrestling heritage. How long did Rey ride Eddie's coat-tails after his death while Chavo pushed a wheel-chair for Vickie? Ken Kennedy gets the Ax for being "Injury Prone" while Batista is week-to-week with injurys. Every new " Superstar " hails from the great state of Oklahoma it seems like. Morrison is a rookie? He was Johnny Blaze and Johnny Nitro... that doesn't count?  Guest hosts huh... any plans for them to win a title? Look at the Screw-Job at the last P.P.V. Looks like a mockery of 1997 and spitting on the fans that paid good money ( In a horrible economy) to see it. Why?

I have posted a few times here and now and NEVER would you even touch on any of these subjects in your blog... NEVER. If you would rather not post anything on your site, feel free to email me. I'm pretty sure you can get the email address from your webmaster. It feels like your booking team needs some talent, and your creative team needs new writers... that might try and create a " New" Rock for this era, but as in the past six years, are fumbling the ball.

Just a thought, and a few questions.

Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.

JR....

Thanks for making wrestling.  Logan is an ass.

I apologize, I forgot one thing! If you're huge fan, a moderate fan, or don't care about wrestling but have a big heart, break open your wallet, pull out a 5 or a 10, and send it to www.wrestlerrescue.org. No, I'm not a rep, but the great "Dr. Death" Steve Williams deserves a voice for all those great moments he gave pro wrestling (and college football) fans back in the day. The Doc was one special athlete, if you never saw him in his prime, and loved to entertain the fans. I know times are tough, they are for me too, but just a little helps a lot, plus you'll be amazed how good you feel. Thanks for reading.

Tulsa, OK

As I'm sure you've been innundated, I'm happy I didn't take your advice on football this week! I have bills to pay...As a former mid-south regular, I was happy to see a great crowd for Smackdown. I had tremendous seats, went with a few pals, and had a pretty good time. Nice pop for good ol' JR. I did love the Vince McMahon bit. The fans were just going crazy for him on the way out...and of course, when the obligatory "What?" chants, started, Vince had responses ready. Oklahoma audiences are very dependable...they ALWAYS cheer the face and ALWAYS boo the heel. Hopefully the powers that be will notice; between that and the fantastic BOK center, Tulsa would make an awfully nice place for a pay per view, huh?

I think  I didnt submit my Q&A  properly so I will leave my comment here. It was more of a comment then a Q&A anyway so it works better this way.

JR what happened to you? I watch old WCW shows and you seemed like such a happy guy with a lot of enthusiasm. When you first came to WWE you seemed like a happy guy with tons of enthusiasm. Also reading your Ross Reports in the Magazines then you seemed very enthusiastic about pro wrestling.

The past 2 years or so in WWE you have seemed like such a grumpy, depressed, jaded person. You seem half asleep on TV every week and have a look about you like you wish you were some where else. Its depressing to watch actually.

A fan asked you in the latest Q&A about any big names appearing on the 10th Anniversary of Smackdown special this week and your response was

"I don't have a clue and haven't given it much thought. The show will be what it will be."

Come on! are you serious? Are you that uninterested in WWE these days? The 10th Anniversary of Smackdown show is a huge deal with a huge main event and The Rock appearing on WWE TV and you give that depressing boring response?

As a fan for several decades, its obvious your main interest these days is BBQ "Gotta eat Q, everyone buy mah Q!" and "Sooner this Sooner that"

Just leave WWE then and hang out in your Q joint all day. Let some guy who still has a genuine passion and excitement about WWE take your place because no matter how you spin it, its obvious your just there to cash the checks.

Another thing. Your response to some of the fans on this site is rude, and uncalled for. Mr Grumpo.

Not everyone is near 60 years old and is more interested in BBQ sauce and college football then pro wrestling. There are many fans A LOT younger then you and there top priority in life IS WWE and pro wrestling. Its called being young and carefree.

Another news flash for you is that more people come on this website to read Wrestling news then they do to buy BBQ sauce. Its tough economic times were in and Im sure more people are content with paying their local Walmart or Target $1 for a bottle of BBQ sauce then paying you $4 and waiting on shipping.

Thanks for all your contributions to wrestling over the years but please retire from wrestling.

J.R.- 27 years, 27 years that's how long i have been a fan of the WWE, my whole life, not one monday night raw missed, not one live event i couldn't make it to ,not one pay-per-view i have not ordered because it had a weak line up, loyalty is key in my life, as it should be in everyones, but latey i have been utterly disappointed with the WWE. Your a man of knowledge and wisdom is there any particular reason the WWE can't seem to develop new headliners or step away from the Cena vs. orton three year never ending night mare of a feud, if there is i think we as fans deserve to know, did someone fall asleep at  the wheel or did they just stop caring about entertaing the fans and just worried with getting ratings and big buy rates. The guest hosts arre evidence enough that the WWE is lacking substance and leadership, if it were not the case then there would be no need to trot out B even C list celebritys to self promote whatever horrific project they worked on recently. that stuff is fun for the big four events (wrestlemania, summer, survivor, royal) but week in and week out it's getting really old. What i am trying to get to is this, i am CROSSING the LINE, and i may never come back, i think that while your legacy and loyalty lay with the WWE, in your heart of hearts, way deep down you have been dying to make a change and have real influence and a real IMPACT on the all aspects of the biz and not just announcing.  you want to be able to talk about the past without your boss screaming in your ear that, that subject is taboo, you want to talk about Briscoe and hogan and Bret hart and even benoit and guerrero without worrying if your making the company look bad or making the company sound too old come on J.R. admit it you watch the other guys on thursday nights and wonder exactly what your influence could do for them, J.R. i have appreciated everything you have done for us fans over the years but i can't stand to watch you slowly be put out to pasture, they moved you to smackdown when you BELONG on RAW and they have gagged you from speaking about all aspects of the business, honestly J.R. how much longer are you going to be forced to repeat what is said through your headphones and not just go somewhere and be free to talk about it all, because a book a movie not even a blog can truely capture the magnificance or beauty of your ability to be the best call man in wrestling history, you are the true icon and living legend but you need to CROSS THE LINE. for all of us

I'll definately be READING the Raw results for this Monday.  The site and mere sound of Sharpton's voice nauseates me to no end.

Hello JR ,

I've heard that Brett Hart is considering coming to the WWE for a re-occuring character for one of the brands .

Could it be that Brett is going to come in as a the new "General Manager" of Monday Night RAW ; which is why we continue to have these obxoxious, drawn out GUEST HOST appearances who obviously know very little about Pro Wrestling aka "Sports Entertainment" ; until his deal / contract is worked out 'n signed ?

JR, first I am a huge fan. As far as I am concerned you are right up there with the Grate Gordon Solie. I also know that you only offer your opinion and don't speak for the WWE.

Having said that don't you think at some point soon Sting would have to make an appearence in the WWE just to ensure that a DVD of his career makes the list.

I know he is getting a little long in the tooth and he is talking about retirement but the WWE owns all of his best stuff and it would be  a crime if one of the greatest didn't get represented in a WWE DVD set.

JR- Long time fan of the WWE and of your work. My neighbor growing up was Keith Mitchell who was the producer for WCW.

He used to lend me all of the WCW tapes from 1991- 1992, which had your play-by-play, and were incredible.

Three questions:

1. Is a Rick Rude DVD forthcoming? His work in WWF was fantastic, but what I watched in WCW was even better.

2. WIll WWE do the right thing, and make the October Halloween Havoc and/or, bring on a Starcade match ever?

3. Watching Ron Simmons win the title in 1992 was great ( I was 9 at the time, but remember being impressed that he beat Vader)... I found this website that takes Vince and the WWE to task for racism.

THoughts?

one more thing I agree Ted Dibiase needs to be in the HoF and I would also like to see Big John Tenta "Earthquake" as well.  I had the honor of jobbing to John in Fresno California back in the day and so he would be a sentimental favorite of mine.

I had to work so I missed the show. Glad to hear Tulsa had a great turnout.  My daughter was sad because she loves Batista and she is worried he will retire before Smackdown returns.

My question JR if you read this is do you think with the recent signings that WWE just might move back to the realm of good wrestling matches or can we expect more soap opera?

jr...being a man who has been the the business as long as you have, I was left wondering.....He has seen it all...has there ever been a "positive" moment in the ring that just left you at a loss for words when you saw it? I know there are probably millions...Sorry if the question is Vague. .

thanks

dan hudson

HBK vs. The Undertaker at WM25 was the best thing that I have seen in the ring in recent memory. Truly great wrestling matches are a fleeting pleasure these days.
