J.R.’s Thoughts of ECW/Topeka

Posted in:
Maybe it is just one hour of wrestling but the ECW TV show is rapidly becoming the best one hour wrestling show on TV for my money. This show has a destination, a great build for the TV main event, and has focus. It just doesn’t seem to be “all over the road”. Hard core Holly’s character looks to be taking a change of course after his ugly 24 stitch cut last week. Bob is a hardass but he is a hard working, blue color guy who has endured a great deal over the past few years. I hope the fans accept Bob as a fan favorite and appreciate his work. Bob’s people skills are a little rough around the edges but he is one tough S.O.B. Interesting tag match with Show teaming with Striker. Striker has the components to be an excellent antagonist. Show, bad back and all, is simply a freak of nature with a personality. I think Sandman and Sabu add to ECW a great deal and still have adequate fuel in the tank. I hope the Extreme Strip Poker game delivers next week with all the hype it is getting. If it comes off like flatulence in church that will not be a good thing. Plus, can one be nude on basic cable?? Kevin Thorn beating Tommy Dreamer surprised me. Nicely done. I am becoming a big C.M. Punk fan. Selfishly I wish Punk were on RAW. Punk is the real deal. O.K. Knox fight Punk already!! Maybe next week. Can you believe Kelly Kelly is only 19? For real!! RVD vs. TEst was excellent even though it took most of Heyman’s friends, and there aren’t many, too beat Van Dam. Successful wrestling shows don’t have to be complex or convoluted. They don’t have to feature wrestlers attempting to be comedians and thespians in general. I think fans like “car crashes” and “competition” not bad acting or lame attempts at comedy. The WWE did a nice job entertaining me Tuesday night on Sci Fi with the one hour ECW show. Attaboys to all. J.R.

did you see the raw family reunin? did you see hat fire in ic Flair's eyes? did you see his hand twitch? He had a cramp. an old familure feeling came back to him. he flt the power! and the glory! his thumb wantd to tuck in and his four fingers wanted to rise up to the heavens! can you hear the galloping of the horses?

Hey, JR, speaking of nudity and bad acting, did you watch No Mercy last night? There was plenty of both on that show. By the way, you must not have watched Raw at all for the past 10 years, because there's been a lot of that on your show.

"lame attempts at comedy" hmmmm....DX?

Haha. Good man JR. You tosser.

You're fired !

I'm a better commentator than you. Good God almighty!

Hello again, JR! Very nice work with the blog thus far, I've been a steady fan of it since it started! Ok, two quick questions for you: (I wonder how you even have the time to read all these extensive e-mails!) 1. WrestleMania 23 is shaping up to be the SECOND biggest WrestleMania of all time! Hopefuly you will also be part of it (as I will too, I got my Gold package set to go!). How does it feel to be part of such a landmark event, particularly now that WWE is bigger than ever across the globe (with no signs of slowing down)? 2. And what on earth is the "world's largest bump and grind"?? (Refering to Viscera) You cannot imagine how much trouble I have adapting that sentence to our language! (I mentioned in an earlier e-mail of mine that I work with the product in my country, Portugal) Ok, so maybe they weren't really short questions, but it was worth a try! hehe :) Regards, Alex

I smell Heyman all over ECW, and thats a good thing. Although many don't like the fact he's not unleashed like he used to be, having Vincent K "sanity checking" the product seems to be working for a mass audience (much as I, a die hard ECW fan hate to admit it). Heyman knows the fans, and everytime the ball has been given to him, its been good for ratings. The only reason I've ever seen that taken from him appears from the outside to be politiking. RVD vs TEST, What a match! On both guys parts. If you have an hour for tv, spending 1/3rd of it on a 5 star match is VERY wise... especially since ECW fans tend to appreciate wrestling, even if they have a taste for blood... Remember ECW was the home of many great wrestlers at one point, Gurrero, Benoit, Storm, Jericho, Austin... ECW is fast becoming my favourite WWE produced show. HOPEFULLY it will cause raw to follow suit, which has been dragging its heels for years now. Smackdown... just don't get me started on 1991 WCW worldwide... sorry Smackdown.

Most of the time i am perfectly willing to give HHH his due, but i have to agree with a couple of the other concerned posters... Between that cluster of a Texas Tornado tag match and his remarks to Chris Masters, HHH couldn't have buried that much of the roster anymore effectively than if he had leased a backhoe for the job.

ECW sucks! Raw is still #1 but we need a live smackdown. Where the hell are all the crowds? Every damn wwe arena looks half empty. JR you are by far the WWE's top announcer. If you leave Raw just who can step up and replace you? Michael Cole isn't bad but him and Lawler have no chemistry.

Hey JR. Nice blogs. I'll have to try out your sauce. Im a big fan of Stone Cold. I know you have the scoop on Austin. I was wonderin if you could tell me if he's ever gonna wrestle again, or if he will be involved in any other way. I find it hard to imagine him not being on TV at all.

JR, when you and King are in the booth nn Raw what kind of computer do you guys use? Just curious, because when the cameras show the computer screen it always looks really clear. Thanks, and good luck with the season premiere!!!

OH I cant believe I forgot to mention the phenomenal A.J. Styles in my previous post. And one more thing... whats up with these new cage match rules. Escaping the cage via climbing over the side SHOULD be the only way to win the match, just like it used to be. Why was this changed? The whole point in a cage is the wrestlers beating the snot out of each other and NOT being able to win with a submission (LOL @ the STFU... so lame) or a power move(like the Spear, which is becoming as generic of a finished as the Power Bomb was back in the WCW vs. NWO days) and DEFINATELY not the crawling or walking out the cage door win... thats just TOO stupid. Take care and hopefully we will continue to be graced with your commentary on Raw. Oh and the Chipotle Sauce is TERRIFIC!!!

In lieu of Harry Smith, who after all the hype was not really used well, and all the new bloods out there like Teddy Hart, Titus, American Dragon, Kings of Wrestling, etc.. WWE offers their version of the future of wrestling: Chris Masters, Randy Orton, Spirit Squad.... I'm sorry J.R., I think I am not alone in thinking that the young 'uns in WWE are lame. You could even see it on the crowd reaction on TV! I have been watching professional wrestling, then later sports entertainment for more than 20 years. I have seen talents come and go. I certainly believe WWE carries a legacy and heritage going back to the days of NWA and all those territories. But the talent and the quality of PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING lately has been very substandard in my book. See for yourself: if you have to rely on a recycled and too-old-to-be-juvenile DX to sell seats instead of offering something new, or rehashing JBL's gimmick with his "cabinet" with King Booker's court, then you should worry.

I agree that ECW should be given a 2 hour slot and that every match should be under "Extreme Rule". IMO wrestlers like Sandman, Sabu, and RVD should never NOT be allowed to use chairs, canes, etc when they are in the ring. These guys REALLY bring the intensity while they are in the ring. Raw is ok. Cena and Edge is so old. Umaga is horrible, even though Armando is entertaining. The Spirit Squad just sucks. DX is funny, but they are starting to get old doing the same old stuff each week... and PLEASE leave Murdoch and Cade on Heat. Cryme Tyme could be an entertaining tagteam and I am actually happy that they will be faces. Now we just need some heel tagteams that are worth a darn... Haus and Benjamin reunion maybe? Smackdown has better wrestling on it then Raw, but King Booker and the cringe-inducing Queen Sharmell(everytime she says "All Hail King Booker" I want to vomit) need to go. Kendrick and London, Benoit(when he returns), and Matt Hardy deserve more airtime and storylines... and let Matt Hardy shine PLEASE. TNA is awesome, but not because of Sting or any of the WWE/WCW washouts. Its awesome because of Samoa Joe and Ron "the Truth" Killings. Samoa Joe is AMAZING and I would love to see him show Umaga who the REAL Samoan Bulldozer is. Ron Killings is an amazing athlete and I love the unique style he brings to wrestling by mixing traditional wrestling moves with the hip-hop/break-dance stuff he does. Kurt Angle going to TAN may be a good thing, providing he is over his issues. I met Kurt Angle when I was deployed overseas and he was a very nice and down to Earth person, and I wish him the best of luck. WOW just realized what a LONG post this was. Hope its not too much of an eyesore. Keep up the legendary announcing!

Yes, one can be nude on cable.... The Shield has shown far more and check out BET sometimes! Especially as late as ECW is on... the question is will Sci-Fi and ECW risk losing any sponsers?

Hey J.R wat are your opinions on TNA?

J.R., What are your thoughts on Big Show as ECW Champion? Why not have a champion that the ECW fanbase can get behind like Tommy Dreamer, Sandman, or RVD. I agree with you that ECW is the best hour of wrestling on TV, but I think it would be better with a champion that the fans could get behind.

First of all, I want to say that you got to give alot of credit to Cena wether you like him or not. He has been one of the busiest wrestlers and he has worked his ass of for us. He doesn't need make up like The Ultimate Warrior, he doesn't need a huge gimmick like The Undertaker (Dead Man) and he doesn't have to be 7 feet tall...he is clean as he can be! He respects every single one of his fans and he appreciates what we've made out of him. If it wasn't for the fans he wouldnt be where he is at right now. He is a talented young man that i look up to. Kids look up him and wanna be like him. He will no doubt be in the hall of fame years from now in the wwe. I don't understand why he has been geting much heat lately with the fans at arenas. I guess I'll never understand. J.R. I just want to say that I just hope you keep renewing the contract with wwe for a long time because there has been many trying to replace you, but no one will ever succeeded to your level. That day will come, i know..... that you might leave, but let me tell you something J.R. you call wrestling like no other in the world! I don't care what sport or what language....you are the best commentator. Now, about ECW, I feel that one hour is not enough. I feel that writers are squeezing so many talents and matches in one hour that sometimes the show seems kind of messy and very short matches. Making ECW a two hour show will make time for all talents to come out at their time and not having to squeeze them all in one hour. Two hours will let talents and writers relax and take a deep breath and let the show flow. I believe Smackdown and ECW should be as strong as RAW. I dont know why it's like that but it's not fair for fans or wrestlers feel less in Smackdown and . Everyone wants to be at Raw. But hopefully things will level out.

JR, if you have any power in WWE, and dont want it to be whipped by TNA, highlight the f*cking cruserweights. i want to see matches before mainevents things like london vs helmes. also, start getting good wrestlers instead of body building stiffs like cena n batista in the heavyweights, and use people like beniot. and get cena of that dam title, because he dam well suks big time. people laugh at WWE for having him on it, i stoped watching WWE all the time because of him, now i only check out the site and maybe watch the main events(i get them for free, i wouldnt pay to see cena when i could buy ROH tapes) and fire visera and val venis and all because they suk as well and no1 cares about them and there jobbers. there is alot of great talent out there that could replace all this crap.

ECW has to extreme rules for EVERY match. Otherwise it's the same as RAW and Smackdown and ECW was never like that. And they need to take the belt off Big Show because he's too fat. Someone like CM Punk or RVD or even (Dare I say it) Hardcore Holly. (Lmao, I'm serious.)Big Show needs to lose weight and stop eating pizza.

Hey J.R. I live teally close to Topeka and wasn't able to go to the show, but my friend went and loved it!!! Especially when Jeff won the IC Championship! But I think ECW is a better show sometimes but needs to be 2 hours and on a more recongnizable network to get more people watching.

Who are YOU to doubt El Dandy?

ECW has become quite the bright spot for WWE lately. Van Dam and Punk are quite easily two of the most over talents in the company, and WWE in general could use more of these guys that come from beyond the standard "sports entertainer" mold with a unique and innovative style of their own. WWE should be combing the indies for more CM Punk's that are surely out there, seeing how far he has gotten, and just waiting for the oppertunity go in that same direction. WWE shouldn't rely so heavily on their own homegrown talents. Less reluctance to recruit indy guys could pay off bigtime. So what if a guy doesn't work the "WWE style?" Maybe WWE needs MORE guys that work a unique style. Variety is a positive, we must remember this. And what's the deal with Shelton Benjamin? I mean seriously, how can such a gifted performer continually get the "creative snub" from the writers? Somebody needs to remind the the guys who decide who gets a "push" and who gets "buried" that no matter who's talking on the mic or how good they are, the PAYOFF comes in the ring on a PPV where people pay money to see the in-ring culmination of a storyline. There aren't many better than Benjamin in the ring, and somebody needs to snap to it that whatever shortcomings he has on the mic would be made up for come payoff time in the ring. The man delivers, and people will pay to see it. Sort of the "if you build it, they wil come" idea - if you push him, they will watch.

Hi J.R , I'm Renato from peru, a Big fan of WWE and of course ECW. Well I 've never heard your comments about the montreal incident (1997) between shawn michaels and Bret ''THE HITMAN'' Hart, where bret lose his title. what can you tell me about it? and is Bret Hart The Best There Is, The Best There Was, The Best There Ever Will Be?...for me ''yes''.

The last ECW show was SOLID from start to finish. No new debuts, no big surprises, no strip-naked-athons, but just a competent well crafted show that advanced storylines and fan interest and opened with an exciting openener and concluded with an excellent main event. Niiice!

I like the direction ECW is taking for the most part. I have a few problems with the brand like the standard matches. I have to agree that ECW does more with one hour than SmackDown, Raw, or TNA could do with two, even three if given. My favorite part of ECW has got to be, well everyones favorite wrestler and mine ..........R-V-D.....Mr. Oh my god! His match with Test was INSANE, I loved it. I was never a Test fan but RVD brought it out of him last tuesday, phenominal match. IMO RVD steals the show wherever he goes, one of the greatest ever. I'm glad to see people like him and Dreamer back in ECW. I would like to see some new talent from the old days though. Oh well....peace

I'm on the fence with ECW at the moment. One week it will be really good and then the next it won't. I can't agree with it being the best hour show of wrestling on TV though. That right deffinatly goes to TNA:iMPACT (which in most cases is even better than SD).

I totally agree with the people saying ECW is the best show. Paul Heyman is very entertaining on tv and he has alot of great ideas for ECW as far as storylines go.

A few weeks ago I was readin Joey;s MEP on ECW .com and he made perfect sense when he said that ECW's standard rules should not be the same as WWE standard rules. He said that low blows and eye gouges should be legal and there would only be a DQ if someone interfered or if aweapon was brought in. Also I woud suggest all the count outs in the corner, in the ring and outside the ring just look odd in a brand that is supposed to be "Extreme"! and in Vinces own words "an alternative" to WWE shows. It would be nice if you could mayby pass this email along toVince. I know your going to say thi is not the original ECW and I Know that but does not make sense. After all the E does still stand for Extreme does it not?.

As a big fan of the ECW brand as of late I see the direction its going and have the utmost respect for the guys on it's roster. I believe that the folks that say it is a undercard for guys who that want to propel to the "Big-Time" Raw or SmackDown! is a joke. These guys are everybit as talented as all the other folks on the WWE roster. Damn good show and listen to JR the man knows his stuff. A Hall of Famer in my book.

Hey JR! I enjoy reading your blogs every week, keep them coming! I wanted to tell you too how much I appreciate all you've done for wrestling. Your by far my favorite announcer and I know you mean more to the company then most considering all the hard work and dedication you've put in over the years. You've cleary made an impact in wrestling and it wouldn't be the same if you weren't around. I have to admit that I get bummed when your not on TV (like for personal reasons, vacation, ect.) as your one of the guys I look forward to hearing from every week! All us fans have a spot for ya JR. Your an influence in many ways, to the company and to us fans and we're all grateful for that!

I kind a like ECW more then RAW now. I dont like the fact that Cena is the WWE Champion again. I mean why? There are other good wrestlers in RAW that could hold the tittle! However ECW now is not so good as it used to be until it was closed. There were more Hardcore in matches.

I live in The Netherlands and here we haven't got any WWE programming on television, so I have to get from the internet. But I can tell you, the only show I get and need is ECW on Sci Fi!

I'm totally into the new ECW! I was a fan of the original, and think WWE is doing a great job of slowly building it as a unique brand, while maintaining some of the fun and unpredictability that the original always carried with it. ECW certainly does entertain me as well, J.R. Question, though: do you think RVD will give the chance to be the top dog of that brand once again?

Is ECW planning a 2 hour show once it gets more talent? Any hopes of more titles, the T.V. Title would be great. Last thing, I pray for Raw and Smackdown to unite again, Smackdown is rather boring, I know its designed to give more wrestlers more chances to shine, but......the ratings on SmackDown are suffering, and I can't stand King Booker, thats why I dont tune in, I just read the taping results, which also sucks, Friday Night SmackDown should not be tapped on Tuesdays, maybe thats why the ratings are low, people just check the tapping results on Wednesday. Anyways, Raw would not be as great as it is without you and Jerry Lawler, dont leave us again...unless you really really really have too. God Bless!

It would be better if you did not let Laurinaitis read bikini catalogues and pick talent for the ECW show from them

Hey Jim, stopped by the Boomerang around Lindsey a few weeks back and saw your display at the front of the store! I was in attendance for RAW in OKC and boy do you get cheered or what? Do you have any suggestions of good connections to get into the wrestling business here in the great state of Oklahoma? I am 21 years old and an avid wrestling fan and wanting to get my foot in the door. My dad worked security for Mid-South for the Lloyd Noble Center years ago but you probably don't remember him! Anyways, any advice from a fellow Boomer Sooner would be greatful. It's a darn shame there aren't any "OVW-style" schools here in this state.

How about Good Ole JR vs Oklahoma at WM23?? Or maybe even Oklahoma/Dr Death vs JR/SCSA???

You are only talking good about ECW because it is a part of McMahon's monopoly of the wrestling business. TNA is a nice fresh breath of air to alot of people.

ECW is by far the better show JR. It always enjoyable to watch each and every week. The main-event are always giving lengthy time, and that's what I like about it. There always seem to be a MOTN each week for ECW. As much as two hours is good for ECW, I like it at one hour because it just brings you back to wanting more. Good, and delightly short, blog this week.

J.R., I was wondering about those WWE tryouts posted on WWE.com in New Hampshire and Ottowa. Were a rare aberration or are they yearly occurances? I ask because as a wrestling trainee I was wondering what the tryout entailed. Maybe I can be in the best possible shape and turn some heads with the help of Good Ol' J.R.

Just come across this site and what a excellent read. Punk is the real deal for sure,it would of been fantastic to of witnessed a Angle vs Punk classic at WrestleMania 23.

The reason DX arent as good as they used to be is, this feud with vince could of happened 9 years ago. They just keep reusing th same old crap. HHH is the man, but puttin him and the never-was-HBK together and giving them so much airtime is horrible. I would of hope at least they would of incorporated some new guys into the feud to help bring along younger talent. DX should be done. As for John Cena, why is he stil getting shoved down our throats? he is not the kind of guy that can be a main face in the company. I have been a WWE fan for 21 years and Cena is the first guy that has made me not want to watch the show or buy the pay per views. The fact that he is now a 3 time wwe champion will forever tarnish that title.

The absolute WORST THING that could happen to Punk is to send him to Raw. Rob Van Dam became the man he is today because he was the TOP DOG in a smaller yard. Punk, with his mic skills, can surpass even what Van Dam's done. If you want to pit Punk vs. the top stars of Raw/Smackdown....do it at Mania in a Champion vs. Champion vs. Champion match for one night only. The last thing Punk needs is to be buried on Raw with HHH and the older crowd. IMO Punk is the only rostered guy in WWE that can rival the rise of TNA's Samoa Joe.

As someone looking to voice a podcast in the near future, I always find negatives about re-hashed ideas on RAW, Smackdown and particularly TNA (which is supposed to be innovative?) Finally a main event without Big Show, so at least someone else on the card comes off strong (albeit Test; who'd think he would look this fantastic?) I get chills and that giddy feeling when I see alot of these matches. It can be CM Punk, The Sandman, even Matt Striker, everyone seems to have a spot. I even liked seeing Francine last week. Its great to see that every match and segment has a purpose, and they are balanced. Competition is great. No need for an expensive entrance ramp or lots of pyro, give me an hour of ECW each week and I'm satisfied.

IS JR GOD?

That other promotion with that huge wrestler, is just another twig in the road for wwe, only to runover it. ECW NEEDS TWO HOURS! it already is better than smackdown! i can tell yout hat since everyone online agrees! CM PUNK VS BIG SHOW AT DTD!

TNA (Total Nonstop Ass ****s)

I would just like to say that I cannot wait until you release your BBQ sauce once again. I've only got half a bottle left from a once enourmous supply. I need my fix once again. Not to be crude but I think you should seperate it from wrestling and get it shipped with a large food supplier. I say this for selfish reasons because if your not on TV I worry I'll never be able to get more of it. One piece of advice I would give for the bottle... and don't take this the wrong way... but maybe you shouldn't have your face on it. People like to associate there food products to a name and not a face. If possible keep the hat that came with it. That would be my advice from some guy in Manitoba.
