JR's Back From Miami...Greatest Tag Teams..Cena's FU History..Bubba/Hulk..Black Friday..JR/King Reunite

Posted in:

We are back from sunny Miami and still proud of our Oklahoma Sooner Football Team who came up short to the Florida Gators in Thursday night's National Championship College Football game. The Sooners who were in the red zone, inside their opponent's 20 yard line, 80 times this season and scored 76 times of those times but squandered a couple of scoring opportunities in a first half against the powerful Gators in a half that ended in a 7-7 tie. The Gators are too good to allow them to get off the hook which resulted in a 24-14 Florida win. Congrats to the Gators for outplaying OU in the second half, specifically the 4th quarter to win their 2nd National Title in 3 years.

I was in a very small group of people that included some of the OU coaches who sat around and discussed the game until 7 a.m. Friday morning which was one of the most unique nights this football fan has ever had the privilege of experiencing. No fans, no family, just 4-5 coaches and maybe 3 or 4 friends in our group. A class group of men who made no excuses, gave their opponent credit for the win, and are already looking forward to the '09 season and in continuing recruiting what looks to be another excellent high school class.

The BCS people who came out of the ACC shut down the sideline passes so yours truly sat in a suite with the Mrs. with such OU alums as Adrian Peterson, Keith Jackson, Greg Pruitt, and NASCAR's Jimmy Johnson, whose wife is an OU alum, to watch the game. The ACC officiating crew, which did not "beat" OU by any stretch, was inept and over their heads managing the game and had several stoppages of play simply because they were either confused or were not communicating well.

I don't know if UF QB Tim Tebow is a Deity or the "greatest college football player of the modern era"  but there is no discounting his toughness and leadership abilities.

Here are some random thoughts for you 'rasslin fans who could care less about football.

Black Friday in Stamford at WWE world HQ was a challenging day for many as several people were laid off due to budget cuts backs and a challenging economy with the hope of making the WWE more cost efficient in an overriding effort to reduce $20M in operating expenses. Any one who has followed the economic state in America and watches the news on TV even periodically should not be surprised at these unfortunate developments. I have no idea who all internally got released but I am sure that there are some that I worked with in the corporate side since the mid 90's. I was surprised and particularly saddened by the release of Tim "The Friendly Tap" White, former referee turned talent/live event producer who was one of the nicest guys in the business. Tim will be just fine but I will certainly miss him.

While no one wants to see any one lose their job, I can say that often times getting leaner lends itself to becoming more productive and increases communication within a corporate environment. I'm a proponent that in some areas of any company that the "too many cooks can spoil the soup" theory is still applicable.

Bottom line and speaking from experience, having to give people the news that they are being let go is never a positive experience and is the toughest part of being an administrator. I can also tell you that after being on the  other side of the coin, the one getting the pink slip, that it isn't the end of the world if you choose for it not to be and can be perceived as a blessing in disguise if the one being let go picks themselves up and moves forward in a positive manner. A "poor me" attitude won't buy any groceries.

Historically, in corporations the size of the WWE, these drastic changes are often times an on going process for a few weeks until all the cuts have all been made and the restructuring, for lack of a better term, has been put in place. Hopefully, no one else is going to be let go but I expect that there will be several, positive internal changes made over the next few weeks.

The King and I are getting back together. Well at least for a day, January 16, as we will be all over Houston doing several media appearances in support of WWE Hall of Fame tickets going on sale on January 17. Once I get the final itinerary, I will let you know in case you want to listen or watch our day in Houston on various radio and TV outlets plus I think one of the media appearances is open to the public. More to come.

The next round of THQ voice overs is slated to start within the next week or so. It will be anxious to see who makes the roster for the next Smackdown vs. Raw video game. There has been some internal changes within THQ and it will be interesting to see if it affects the lines we read in announcer mode for the next game.

The WWE is apparently producing a new DVD about the "Greatest Tag Teams in Wrestling" and it would be interesting to hear any one's suggestions or feedback on this matter. I am consulting on it along with several others and I find it intriguing as to who some feel were greater teams than others. Much of it depends on the generation that one really became a devotee of the business. For example, I always like the work of a team such as Demolition but to say that Demolition was a "better team" than Ray Stevens and Pat Patterson isn't even debatable in my humble opinion. In any event, this DVD will feature many, many outstanding teams but I am not sure if is a ranked list of duos or if it is going to be produced in another way such as by rank, say 1-100 or something to that degree.

Nice to see the WWE live event in Winnipeg have over 11,000 fans turn out in 20 degrees below zero weather Friday night for the return of the WWE headlined by hometown product Chris Jericho facing John Cena.

Speaking of Cena, I hear his FU finishing maneuver is being renamed "The Throwback" which works for me and is certainly easier for me to communicate to my 5 year old granddaughter who's a Cena fan of sorts. It will be interesting to see how much knee jerk reaction this name change creates in the illustrious media. Knowing today's trends and the vocal minority of some fans who have enough product knowledge to be dangerous, too much.

Smackdown broadcaster Eve wrested at her first, WWE live event match this weekend. I think Eve might  have a good shot at becoming solid wrestler as she is a tough minded, legit athlete who I noticed was wearing a Gracie MMA T shirt not that long ago. I know, she could have bought the shirt but I get the sense that she enjoys MMA and has a level of familiarity of it.

I read two reviews of "The Wrestler" in the DFW Airport last night with one being fair and overall positive and the other ripping it as it was easy to see the wrestling bias the reviewer had. I still haven't seen it but plan on taking the Mrs. when it open in OKC. I noticed that Mickey Rourke's hair extensions reminded me of Dog the Bounty Hunter or certain Diva's over the years but that's another story.

Caught Friday night Smackdown this morning on DVR and I really enjoyed the Undertaker vs. Benjamin match on TV.  The Show-HHH match was really solid too especially considering that the audience had seen HHH 3 times which is challenging to any athlete and something I don't feel any wrestler looks forward to.

I hope that the WWE Tag Title issue between Carlito and Primo vs. Kendrick and Jackson continues to evolve so that the Tag Titles can regain some cache.

Ted DiBiase, the Million Dollar Man version, sent me a nice email of condolence over my Sooners loss Thursday night. Ted has been a great friend for years and years and never had the "body builder physique" but evolved into one of the best in ring talents of all time. There was no one Ted DiBiase couldn't have a great match with. Some of his work with the late Dick Murdoch in Mid South Wrestling is the stuff of legend and would be great viewing for a fan or a wannabe wrestler. Also, Ted's book which is still available is a great, quick and easy book to read and one that I recommend you check out.

Stone Cold and I were busy texting during the OU game and I expect to be talking to Steve soon to give him a complete download of the week and to hear his review of the game. Steve is an honest man so if you don't want his true feelings one shouldn't ask. That's the way it should be as the wrestling biz in general has too many "yes men" and "fence straddlers" in it. For the record, when I first got in the business in the mid 70's, the "yes men" and "ass kissers" were even more prevalent which was a by product of wrestlers having no job security IE no contracts and the fickle nature of the promoters who owned the wrestling territories.

The annual Cauliflower Alley Club (CAC) function is coming up April 13-14-15 in Vegas. I attended last year with Stone Cold when Bret Hart was honored. I do not know Steve or Bret's plans for 2009 but I want to go back if my WWE TV taping schedule will allow it. I don't have my schedule after WM25 so I am not sure yet if I can attend. Nonetheless if you are a true fan and want to experience one of the great wrestling experiences of a life time then I strongly suggest that you make plans on attending. It is a guaranteed great time.

The WWE set me up to be a guest on the Bubba the Love Sponge Show this past week and I lost a case of J.R.'s BBQ Sauce to Bubba and his producer Brent Hatley as they took Florida to beat my Sooners. No worries, they will simply receive the greatest case of sauces they ever had and it will taste lovely on grilled Gator. Nonetheless I was surprised when Hulk Hogan called in. It was good to hear from him after all the hell that he has gone through, that woman scorned thing, divorce, etc, and we talked about the well worn story of a possible Hulk vs. Stone Cold match at WM25. I still don't think it will even happen but I do think two things, 1. it would overshadow virtually every thing on the card if it were built over an extended period of time and 2. there would need to be a conclusive winner. Now, with all that said, no matter the fan interest,  the match still isn't going to occur in my view. I will add a 3. "Never say Never" just to keep the seemingly endless conversation alive. I really enjoyed talking to Bubba and Brent and they have one helluva radio show that kills in the ratings. I hope to be back on there again soon so I can take my trip to the verbal woodshed as a result of the BCS game.

Looking forward to driving up Tuesday morning from KC to Omaha for the Smackdown TV taping in Omaha on Tuesday night. I'm sure I will hear my share of catcalls re: the OU loss as many fans know that I am a Sooner Fanatic but I can handle it and to the victor goes the spoils. Nebraska football fans are among the best any where and my friend and their head coach Bo Pelini has the 'Huskers on their way back to the Promised Land. I am not a fair weather fan and believe that commitments in life are still important. Fans can raise all the hell they want and I assure you all will be well. However beware of the sign police unless of course you are sporting the politically correct "JR's BBQ Rules" or "The World's Angriest Announcer" signs for your SD broadcast team.

Be well, thanks for stopping by, and order more JR's BBQ products and our Beef Jerky.

Boomer Sooner!

Join louis vuitton handbags club, maybe you will wear nike shoes in the sumer, and wear ugg boots in winter, but whenever the adidas shoes always be popular if you get the gucci handbags with you. Same time the jordan shoes is also a good choice.

JR,

I can recall that "The Throwback" was the name for Cena's flip-over bulldog/neckbreaker. {First heard from Michael Cole when the former "Doctor of Thugnonomics"  was on SmackDown! and changing it from the FU would be pointless IMO.  And far as the Hogan v. Austin "dream match" goes, there are a few others I would like to throw in there I would like to see(that more than likely will never happen) :

Rock v. Cena

Rock v. HBK

Rock v. Kennedy

Rock v. Orton

Rock v. Batista

Rock v. Edge

Rock v. Benjamin

Rock v. Mysterio

Rock v. MVP

Austin v. Kennedy

Austin v. Cena

Austin v. Orton

Austin v. CM Punk

HHH v. Mysterio

HHH v. CM Punk

HBK v. CM Punk

HBK v. Jeff Hardy  (Think it has happened, but don't remember)

Jericho v. Kennedy

Jericho v. MVP

and The Greatest "Dream Match" of all time (IMO)

The Undertaker v.  STING !!!!

Sidebar: I would put Matt Hardy in here too, but his mic skills hasn't been consistent; as there's no "OOMPH!!" to them.

JR,

It was great hearing you on Bubba's show last week.  You're still the best play-by-play man in the business.

hey, um about the next smackdown vs raw video game, does anyone know about which game consoles will have its version of the game?

$20M is a lot it will be great for me if i was in wwe at this time where some young talents get bigger in situations like this but the damn visa will never help me too show the world the meaning of "talent" not like these days wrestlers

Regarding the Tag Team DVD, one team no one has mentioned yet is Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas.  They should be a part of the DVD for their accomplishments of breaking through the race barrier.

JR,

I take umbrance to you complaing about officials. As a Referee with over 30 years experience, the favorite saying is "come on ref", give us a break. You form your own breaks I always say. I can sympathise with your loss of your beloved Sooners, because I also like them.

"too many cooks can spoil the soup" theory is still applicable.

Sorry JR, will not fly with me. I'm a Chef, and have been handed the "Soup Nazi" tag. Soup is my thing, but I still have people taste and get feedback. I may not change anything, or make a small change. You can not put a quote on anything they are doing right now except for maybe, "Save Our Money." Thing is, an old dog can always learn new tricks. It's how stubborn that dog is, whether it will listen. Please, with the utmost respect to you, do the fans a favor. Stop trying to belittle us.

Please explain the "belittling" aspect of your email. Thanks.

Hey Jr

Yoy know its funny, had the Sooners scored six more points to make the score 24-20 it would have made Warner Wolf on Imus in the Morning very happy. He picked 24-20 for all 32 bowl games figuring one would end that way. 32 Games, that really is overkill. I mean they keep making new bowl games just so it seems every team can play.

As for them renaming the FU, I really don't care either way since I've always hated that move. How a simple fireman's carry is supposed to be a devistating finisher I'll never know. But I suppose they could think of stuff far worse then The Throwback.

And you are right about Dibiase/Murdoch being required viewing. The night Captain Redneck splattered Ted's brains and Ted still fought Flair for the title later in the night is a prime example of how great wrestling can be.

The only entertainment that can compare to the WWE for me is Gator football.  My GOD can your quarterback throw!  I appreciate you not diminishing the Gators accomplishment (as often happens in fandom) in your blog.  Besides being (arguably...though not by me) the best commentator on television, you consistently show a level of class that is rapidly becoming scarce.  Any thoughts on Grisham and Stryker on ECW?  I won't lie...I really enjoy them.  Stryker in particular.  He runs to the edge of "breaking the wall."  What trait could be more ECW?  Also, the dynamic between you and Taz(z) is turning into something I great as well.  Thanks again for all your work.

Hey J.R.,

Sorry about the Sooners. I was hoping they would shut the SEC up and make the BIG XII look better.  Still a great season for them. Hopefully my Aggies will fair a whole lot better in 09 with a full season in the Mike Sherman program under their belts. A few thought on the Tag team DVD I know some of these are repeats but they bear repeating....

The Freebirds

Von Erichs- I love watching the 6 man tags between these two on WWE 24/7 On Demand. WCCW is what made me love wrestling. Being here in Dallas I can still hear Bill Mercer and remember the Sportatorium fondley... It's a liquor store now....Sad.

Dudleys

Hardys

Briscoes

Blackjacks

Hart Foundation

Rock N Roll Express

Midnight Express

LOD

Not sure if you can list all the deserving teams on even a 3 disc set but these are just a few that i come up off the top of my head. Continued success and good health in the new year and hope to make it back up to Jr's again very soon. If any of your readers are within driving range of Norman or Moore OK it is well worth the drive. The 'cue is out of sight and the Sweet Tea glass never runs empty. Have a great JR. Boomer Sooner.

Jr: tag teams for the dvd

Freebirds

Von Erichs

Hardys

Legion of Doom

Sheepherders (Before they were Bushwakers)

Brisco Brothers

Dudley Boys

Edge and Christian

Wild Samoans

JR,

The news of a prospective Tag Team DVD is very intriguing. Off the top of my head I'd have to say the set should be at least three-discs in lenght to do it justice. I would hope that the DVD paid close attention to the actual tag teams that defined the eras rather than say the dream teams that have been thrown together over the years e.g. the Mega Powers, DX (shawn and HHH incarnation) or Dudes With Attitudes. The set should exclusively rank those that entrenched their legacies into tag team wrestler or at least contributed to major parts of their careers. For instance the Hart Foundation are perhaps one of the greatest teams of all time and led to perhaps the single greatest singles worker of all-time - Bret Hart.

It might be very cool to compare tag teams of the past to tag teams of the present - similarities in both style and characteristics. Miz and Morrison remind me of a Edge and Christian, for example.

It would be great to see a package on those great teams that ended in controversy and spawned rivalries. In fact, it seems the longest sustaining feuds in the modern era began with the break-up of a tag team. For instance Tito Santana and Rick Martel were on-screen enemies for years. Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michael's also never really settled their score whilst both full-time performers. Hey, Hogan and Savage are feuding until this day (however, sadly, this feud is based in reality!)

One point to consider is where the Road Warriors fit into this project. If it were a top 100 say, how can the Warriors not claim the top spot. They're the only team to have a DVD entirely devoted to them. Trying to find new material on them may be tricky.

Lastly, i wonder how much attention or better yet 'props' will be shown to those teams not featured on the WWF/WWE brand. For instance, The Freebirds, Harlem Heat, The Andersons, The Hollywood Blondes and although it maybe painful, the Outsiders should be considered.

I am entirely looking forward to this DVD. It's one of those fundamental aspects of the business that has yet to be explored in this type of format. Hell, even the managers have their own DVD! This is a no-brainer and should be huge!

Ben

random great teams that you probably already thought about:

The British Bulldogs

Steiner Brothers

Legion of Doom (the Original of course)

The Hardy Boyz

The Freebirds

The Midnight Express

The Rock´n´Roll Express

The Rockers

Demolition

Hart Foundation

Akira Taue & Toshiaki Kawada

Dudley Boys

Nasty Boys

Headshrinkers

Public Enemy

Brisco Brothers

and yeah, the briscoe brothers and the tomasselis should be considered as well.. not that wwe will do it, i know ; )

Jr had to rib you about OU being #2, I am a Gator fan rite behind the Seminoles,I have been a Seminole fan since Bill Peterson was head coach before Bobby Bowden. Was a good game and I would not have bet 50 cents on the winner. But I love a good game no matter who wins, kinda like a good QH race. I watched last nites Smack Down with anticipation to see if BS would knock out HHH. The story line with Jeff Hardy had me going for a fw minutes there, Jeff has really come a long way in the last couple of years. The Hardy Boys are at the top of their game and I hope they stay that way for a while, would be a good story line for them to be the longest to retain in,however many months/Years, especially as brothers. I know the thing between the Hardy boys and Edge is going to grow into something really bid. I think Big show should move up and hav a fewed with Chavo and put an end to aunt Vicki, I think she should be used in some other means, her on air venu gives to much chance for people to make fun of her weight and looks. Perhaps she could be replaced by the divas that were put out by Awsom Kong. I am sure Teddy long would not object. Sounds like the marriage between her and Edge is about worn off. The Tag team video sounds like a good thing, I wuld really like to see some of the old Texas Outlaws matches would be good. Will be waiting on Monday nite Raw. Thursday nite TNA is getting interesting. Kirt Angle is a good showman, but I think he is really mad and it shows in his matches, He is going to hurt some young wrestler really bad if he does not settle down.

The Midnights-Fantastics match is one of the best matches I've ever seen, and should no doubt be on the collection... but I would be shocked if it were.

me again ;)

forgot to mention the Midnight Express vs. Fantastics match from the first Clash of the Champions. I have heard a lot of praise for this but have never actually seen it.

a "greatest tag teams" DVD could be very interesting if the match section is filled with previously unreleased stuff (I already own many WWE DVDs so I don't want the same matches over and over again).

* Steiners vs. Lex Luger & Sting (SuperBrawl 1991)
* Bret & Owen Hart vs. The Steiners (1994 Coliseum Video exclusive) and
* Shawn Michaels & Diesel vs. Razor Ramon & 1-2-3 Kid

would be the first matches that would come to my mind that I'd love to see on that set.

Hi JR--very excited to hear of the newest WWE dvd project for the greatest tag teams. I personally would like to see it broken down by decades---the 80's, 90's and millenium teams--on three discs (not that i would mind seeing older teams like your favorites: Patterson and Stevens). For the 1980's--Demolition, Midnight Express, Hart Foundation, British Bulldogs, Horsemen, Road Warriors and the Freebirds. For the 1990's: Hollywood Blondes, Owen/Bulldog, Steiners, Money inc, NWO Outsiders, Harlem Heat. For the Millenium: Edge/Christian, Dudleys, Hardyz, APA, Too Cool, DX, Miz/Morrison, Los Guerreros (I know Benoit/Angle will never happen). I am sure there are other great teams--but to include them all on a 3 disc set is not possible. If i had my druthers, i would love to see 3 different 3 disc sets--1 for each era---What do you think? I also would like to see teams that already have dvd releases in circulation (like the LOD, Hardyz, DX and the Horsemen) be included only in matches against others that have not yet had releases (Bulldogs, Freebirds, Harts, Midnight Express are the teams i am most interested in seeing represented, and especially from a WWE perspective---the Demolition (first 3 time WWE/F tag champions). It is a crime that the Demolition/Brainbusters matches are not on the upcoming Best of Saturday Night's Main Event. Hopefully there will be a second release with other great SNME matches that were skipped for the first release. Would love to hear what you and others think of my suggestions--

JR really! Bubba the Love Sponge??? Im dissapointed JR, have the guys over at teh WWE set you up with a REAL radio The Opie and Anthony Show, they have had numerous wreslters on the show in the past, including the big man himself Vince McMahon. Also they are really great friends with Mick Foley. Take that into consideration. Also it is a good platform to promote your BBQ stores and website. Opie and Anthony XM 202, Sirius 197.

Sorry about your Sooners JR, i was rooting for them and i was upset when they lost, They will be back next year no doubt.

Thanks for the update, and keep up the great work
