J.R.'s Commentary

Posted in:
We have been hit with more negatively vented comments the past couple of days than I am going to suggest the webmaster post regarding the suspensions of several wrestlers regarding violations of the WWE’s Wellness Policy. Some of these comments borderline on the insane ramblings of uninformed, albeit passionate people, who now have a new cause du jour to rally around. I must also point out that some of the comments were succinctly written, well thought out and heartfelt. Those might see “the light of day” but the voluminous, seemingly never ending ones will not. The WWE’s Wellness Policy is real. It is also evolving and improving. Changes to this program needed to be made and are being initiated. The long term health of all WWE Superstars should be, and I feel, is the top priority of the company. It certainly is from my personal perspective. Talent and Television are what makes the WWE what it is today and one without the other is a recipe for less then desired success. Being a former head of talent, I have always, perhaps egocentrically, said that talent was the key to the WWE because that’s what the company is selling; talented, athletic, charismatic performers who draw fans into the talents’ personas by encouraging the fans to emotionally invest. Without talented and highly skilled men and women, what do the TV folks put on the tube? Again, that’s an old, talent guy talking. Talent being the key to a wrestling company has been true since I was a kid and started watching wrestling on TV in the 1960s. It was the classic good vs. evil scenario with clearly defined reasons as to why “good” was battling “evil” inside a wrestling ring. I was hooked on the product as a small kid and have been ever since. Strong, personal issues between charismatic wrestlers/characters that came to life on our black and white TV screen when I was in elementary school are still memories that I cherish. Times continue to evolve in all phases of our lives and even though many of us fondly remember and like to talk about the “good old days” and “how wrestling used to be” those days are largely history. That’s not to say most of us won’t still enjoy pro wrestling but it definitely won’t be our grandfather’s wrestling program. But neither is the NFL or Major League Baseball, etc for instance. Their game, the rules, the equipment, the fields, the TV production, etc has changed drastically since I was a kid even though I am a self professed dinosaur. But I still LOVE all levels of football and enjoy MLB’s playoffs and the World Series, for example. The WWE has suspended several of its superstars this past week for the right reasons. Some “fans” and many wrestling pundits/critics will say, “well, it’s about time”, or some might say, “it’s only because Congress is looking over the WWE’s shoulder”, and a few, I stress a few, might even say, “Good job, WWE.” You select any response you choose. That’s your right, but most likely the responses will be less than positive because that’s the type of society we seem to live in today. Good news doesn’t travel as fast as bad news nor is it as ratings worthy or as topical. Cable news shows rarely lead off their broadcasts with “good news” and there is a reason for that. It’s called ratings. Controversy does create cash. I applaud the WWE for taking such a strong stance in suspending many of its Superstars for violation of policy. The WWE cut the wrestlers a break by not making their names public but will do so after November 1 to anyone who is in violation of the Wellness Program. Even though it would have not been totally fair, I would have been tempted to make these recent offenders’ names public on this go round. Most likely or at least in my personal opinion no one violated the Wellness Program inadvertently and everyone knew the ramifications. It will be interesting to see how many “fess up” to their indiscretions and admit their wrong doing and learn from this experience. How many will pass the buck and rationalize that what they did was somewhat, no matter how vaguely, the right thing to do under their particular and specific situations? Not getting paid for 30 days and being largely forgotten on TV isn’t a good thing for any performer or wrestler. Adding the public embarrassment of the world knowing of the indiscretion will also be challenging and embarrassing for individuals to handle as it relates to their families, including their children, business associates, fans and themselves. Some of these wrestlers could easily lose six figures of income for their lack of judgment. That would definitely get my attention. And if it didn’t, I would suggest I did not belong in the organization. Period. I don’t know how any of us are going to change the past and the tragedies that have occurred to another generation of wrestlers. I sure wish I could. We can’t bring back our many friends and peers who have left us too early. But we can do something about the future. Things can and must change going forward. And I believe they will. As mortal beings we can only affect the present and the future to any degree. The past is history and history is to be studied and learned from. I am saddened and disappointed in those that have been suspended. I hope they learn from their mistakes and can return to the roster and become positive role models to their teammates and to the fans. That opportunity exists. In the meantime, the absence of the offenders from the locker room will provide an extraordinary opportunity to those superstars who haven’t cheated and are still on the active roster. In all candor, I would say fans of the product are in for some interesting TV fare over the next several weeks. New faces in new scenarios isn’t a bad thing. Opportunity knocks and I can’t wait to see who steps up. As usual, I am not asking anyone to agree with my personal opinions. This space is my space to express myself and to provide a platform for the visitors of our site to do likewise much more often than not. If you are angered that your comment was not posted, then I apologize. However, there are plenty of forums that will encourage and solicit all the angst one might want to contribute. I have been honest with you on this commentary and if that isn’t good enough, then so be it. No one asked me to write this nor did any one approve or disapprove it before it was posted in case some of the “Oliver Stone’s” out there might be thinking otherwise. We will return to our regularly scheduled programming after I return from Columbus, Ohio. Until then your comments and feedback, as always, are encouraged and appreciated, as is your business. Have a wonderful holiday weekend. BOOMER SOONER! J.R.

i think it's sad that WWE superstars are using drugs...all of the good wrestlers are getting suspended.....i hope that shawn comes back, he's my favorite. then hopefully the ratings will go up.

Hi J.R i just wanna say that my Dad and my brothers watch raw all the time and the things you come out with just cracks us up I can't wait for WWE to come back to Australia there are so many fans over here and from all of the AUSSIE fans we can't wait to see all the SLOBBER KNOCKERS see ya.

JR, great column. I do believe that steroid use in the business should be stopped for the safety of the superstars and their families, friends. However, WWE is sports ENTERTAINMENT, Im sure there are plenty of other entertainers who are using steroids among other things, why arent they being punished. Hell Sylvester Stallone was caught with enhancing drugs and it was in the media about an hour(until Paris or Britney forgot to wear panties) so why is congress investigating the wwe when they arent doing the same in hollywood. I am an avid wrestling fan of almost 18 years i watch every program and order every ppv. i was at WM in Chicago. You are by far the best ringside talent in the business. and i wish you a great future in the wwe and your restaurant.I just want to make sure everyone knows I am not saying i agree with using drugs what i am saying is i think the media needs to quit being hypocritical and acknowledge that its not just in wrestling, its everywhere. Thanks for you time James Aubry jeaubry12345@yahoo.com

I have to say I agree with you on this one, J.R. If the superstars can't play by the rules, then they deserve the consequences. As we say here in Aus- you do the crime, you do the time.

Hello JR, Having been a fan or proffessional wrestling for almost my entire life and now my 9 year old daughter also loves it,I find myself really thinking that you are the only person on the inside of the WWE that has really givin a honest and truthfull reponse to a major situation that has evolved from alot of traggity,Thanks for being so straight forward.I hope that all of the wrestlers that have been busted for all of the substance abuse really sit back and look at the fact that most of them at some point were sitting in there living rooms watching a wrestlemania and idolizing there favorite wrestler, and how messed up would they be if they found out on the news that there hero was shootin steriods and going against all they said in there personas on tv.I just found out how that would be when a certain superstar compleatly distroid my daughters aura with wrestling, sad isnt it. Thanks again JR

JR, I am finally glad that the WWE is doing something about this problem. Everyone can complain and make claims of why the WWE is doing this now but for what ever reason I am glad to see it happening.

JR: Thanks as always for sharing your insights with us fans. I've been watching WWF/E wrestling since 1982 and the old Superstars program on Channel 9 in NY/NJ at 11am on Saturday mornings, back when Bob Backlund was World Champion and the Wild Samoans had the tag belts. The English major in me begs a question--and please take this purely as curiosity, not criticism. Frequently, while describing action in the ring, an announcer will announce "a kick to the knee of CM Punk," or similar. It seems an unlikely construction; one might more naturally say "a kick to CM Punk's knee" in conversation. Then again, you're announcing, not having a conversation as such. I've heard you use the "kick to the knee of..." construction, I heard Joey Styles do it just last night on ECW in the Punk/Morrison match, I recall VKM doing it back when he was announcing on Superstars programs in the '80s unless I'm remembering wrong (entirely possible), and I've even heard announcers on other primetime national cable wrestling programs use the same construction. I'm not looking to get all Matt Striker on you here, but I really am curious ... is this sentence construction something that was taught in announcer school? Is it emulating a style of a former announcing great (ie, Gordon Solie) that I'm not catching on to? Is this a style that Vince has suggested everyone adhere to? Is it too easy to trip up on possessives and the apostrophe-s while concentrating on the action? Is it a way of trying to get around potentially confusing "he" and "him" pronouns when there are two people in the ring and the action/advantage is back-and-forth? I'd be grateful for any insights you can provide. On a BBQ note, I'm assuming that The King has taken you to Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous in Memphis at some point? I live in Southern California, where we have a small chain called Lucille's that gets the job done, but I've traveled to Memphis for business now and again, and have loved Rendezvous for years. Your thoughts on that particular establishment? THANK YOU JR! Jeff

JR, I applaud you for your stance. I would like to ask you a question, and I hope you can get around to answering it. Why is it that Sports seem to be carrying the can for eradicating drugs in society? It's not as if the only place drugs are being taken is wrestling, football, baseball etc. I would bet my last cent that there is drug use in the movies/tv world, building industry - heck society wide. So why do we never hear of Congress enquiries into these industries? That must annoy the hell out of a lot of people in the sporting world.

hi jim its robby again from south africa. i am so pumped up the raw summerslam tour is here at last, i will be attending the show on friday night the 7th of september, will you be touring south africa as well? have a great week and i hope to see you here in south africa.

Dear Mr. Ross, First of all I'd like to thank you for your honesty, but I can't help feeling that even with your straight ahead clear approach, I can almost picture you gritting your teeth as you write. Please allow me to make a point here, I in no way condone the actions of those who were using illegal substances to either insure OR attepmt to move up through thier selfesh & reckless behavior with seemingless disregard for their future health and longterm well being. Now, my point. And if I could I would gladly come up to Stamford and gather the ENTIRE WWE roster i together and look them all eye to eye, Maybe, just maybe, it might save a young man's/woman's life. A year ago June ( the 26th to be exact ) my fiance was visiting her family in N.C. and was not feeling well. She called me (I was in Conn visiting family) when she called me 3 times saying she did'nt feel well & wanted me to take her back home immediatly to S.W. Florida. She had been diagnosed Bi-polar 2 years ago and was under very good medical care here. Unfortunatly, a so called friend offered to "help her feel better" until I got there. Well, to make a long story short, the "help" reacted with her normal medicine and at the tender age of 36, just hours before I got there to take her home, her heart stopped due to the mixture of her anti-depresent & the other drug. She simply went to bed and never woke up - it's called Acute Pulmunary Edema, basicly a result of drug interaction that causes the respertory system to continue to slow down until your heart no longer has the strength to pump blood and the left ventrical clogs your blood back into your lungs. You literaly drown in your own blood. I as you to please, please pass my story alomg to each & every member of your company. 3 months ago we should've been on our Honeymoon cruise - instead the last 15 months of my life have been nothing less than hell on earth to me & BOTH of our families! I'm sure this is not the type of letter you would expect, and I'm not making any judgements towards those WWE employees that find themselves in this situation but this is'nt about being a fan, or some "Holier than thou" glad they got caught letter either. We are all human & all have our frailties. I guess what I'm trying to say Mr.Ross is this - When a person, any person, takes these kind of chances they are not just risking their own lives - it can & often does destroy the lives of those who closest to them who love them dearly. And I can speak from personal experience, no matter what others will keep telling you - the pain NEVER, and I mean NEVER, goes away. Thank you for your time, Joseph Gesell Englewood, florida P.S.You have my permission to show to Chavo, I think he'll understand the most. Or anyone else you choose to. Again Mr. Ross, I thank you for your time.

Hey JR, Looking at the fact that all these new Harts are now in the making, I was wondering, how inlcined is the WWE to hire/promote talent based on their background legacy/connections? I don't doubt that Cody Rhodes is an excellent talent and could be a huge draw someday, but I can't help but think there is a certain pressure/obligation to hire "within the business" of family connections. Just wondering because I don't understand people training for years upon years and never getting called up, while it takes others half the time because they have a certain DNA. Obviously, there are those who get recognized for their talent and have absolutely no connections other than that of their trainer(s), but I don't know of one "family member" who has not made it right away. This is more of a retorical question for myself, but I'd appreciate your thoughts on it. Thanks

Hi JR, I live in ALABAMA but over the LABOR DAY WEEKEND I visited my in-laws in FAYETTEVILLE NC. While there I tried to find the BBQ SHACK that you mentioned but had no luck finding it. I tried the local YELLOW PAGES and asked relatives who live in the area and nobody had heard of it. One relative asked if you possibly meant the BARBEQUE HUT which is about a half mile from the CROWN COLISEUM on OWEN DRIVE? Just wondering! Keep up the good work on all your projects and ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

Evening J.R., I'm a little off the topic, but I know you're a pig-skin fan so I'll continue: I know you're a Boomer Sooner. How happy are you to know my Georgia Bulldogs took care of business against the 2nd best school in Oklahoma this weekend? Cowpokes went home flabbergasted and shocked. World's best offense? 14 points, none in the 2nd half. In any case, I just wanted to drop by, give you something a little different to read, and congratulate you like everybody else for standing up for your beliefs.

hello jr... your my fav broadcaster on wwe... but i got to say one thing for ya GO LONGHORNS haha... :) keep it real.... and thanks for the years of service and great broadcasting

Hey JR... Today I met with Federal NDP party leader, Jack Layton, today. I had a long talk with out about WWE's Smackdown Your Vote project and how successful it was down there in US in getting young voters, 18-25 year old, to get out and vote. I suggested he contact Carl DeMarco in an attempt to get the Smackdown Your Vote promotion here in Canada... We have provincial elections coming in Ontario, next month as well as a federal election looming in the air if Stephen Harper's minority government suffers a no-confidence vote. He was totally into the idea and ever pulled me aside to talk about it. He agreed that having popular Canadian wrestling personalities like Edge, Bret Hart, Chris Jericho, etc... encouraging to vote, that it'll greatly increase the number of young voters getting out to the poles... Tell me your thoughts, on that JR. :)

Jim, I'm in agreement with those whose comments I have read just on this page alone. Very well said! I am 25 years old and have watched WWE most of my life, I believe I was about 3 years old when my daddy got me hooked. It's a refreshing change of pace for me to see a sports organization stepping up to the plate for the betterment of those who work for them. No finger pointing or he said she said. It is my hope that those who abused the Wellness Policy will own up to their mistakes and not become repeat offenders. I am anxious to see your response as to whether you feel any of the other wrestling organizations not only here in the US, but around the world, will or should initiate a plan for their athletes similar to what WWE has done. Thank You For Your Time, Nikole

Well said JR, we can always count on you to be the voice of reason. I have been reading all the articles i can find, recently, about the WWE / steroid debate and i've been noticing similarities, nearly everyone in trying to blame this on Vince. Now correct me if im wrong here but surely ONE man does not have the capacity to make anyone take steroids or any other type of drug for that matter. People need to stop blaming Vince.

JR - can't wait for RAW this week in Green Bay, WI! I will be 3rd row behind the announcers & can't wait to see you & the other talent at the show (especially our own Mr. Kennedy). If "things are looking up", wouldn't that mean one of the taller wrestlers would fill the bill? It should be a memorable night regardless!

How important and big would have been if the two biggest entities in wrestling history (it's biggest babyfaces in the true sense of the word) Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan had a ppv match and why do you think it never happaned? We know that it was supposed to happen in WWE in SummerSlam93 even though Hogan denies it but Bret said they even took publicity shots with the belt. And in WCW it was supposed to happen at Mayhem99 and again they changed the plans because of Hogan's problems with Vince Russo...

I think that the Wellness Policy is a good thing for the company and a good thing for other sports to consider. Everything that I have read about the Policy from the objective articles (your website and wwe.com) the policy is something that takes time to weed out the garden sort a speak. If certian superstars are gettting suspended now espcecally after the current controversy surrounding the WWE now should be given the 30 day suspension. After seeing what this hell has done to other people in the business it should open they eyes of every wrestler to say "Hey I need help before I do something that will ruin my life." And you can tell that the creative and the promoters are putting and do have the best interest of the performer and the company. Personally I wouldn't care if I saw my favorite superstars for a month just as long as I knew that they are seeking help for something that in the long run could decide what the rest of their lives would be like. Maybe THEN would we finally put a stop to Wrestlers dying at age 40. There is no future to the business if there is no change today. So I would say "GOOD WORK WWE" and to those suspended Just let this show you what you could lose if your not careful with the decisions that you make.

I think those comments say it all. I find it a bit odd however that no one is looking at why these drugs are so easy to get hold of on or off perscription - the individual cannot be responsible for the drug world (as I understand it anyway. I am so concerned about it I am even writing my final year dissertation on this subject because I am so passionate about it. Don't think its too fair Punk getting the title because of suspensions - I've always loved this guy and he represents what I'm about. Anyways sir I hope you enjoy a nice cold Pepsi in celebration of C.M Punk's title win :D

"This stinks Ross, it stinks" - Jesse Ventura Hey Ross, You probally dont recall (since you've called so many matches) but the quote i always use at the top of my post is a match you and Jesse called between Rick Rude and Masahiro Chono. The only reason i bring this up today is because of what i have just learned from a wrestling source. Rick Rude is a legend on this years SDVR 08 and i am probally the happiest guy alive!!! JR, i hope you knocked it out of the park with your calls with Rude in his matches! i hope there are Hennig references to go along with Rude. anyways, whatever your additions are to the game, i cant wait to hear them! reguards, one happy Rude fan, Wes

Hi JR, I have to say I feel the WWE are doing absolutely the right thing at the moment with the suspensions of some of its tallent. I appreciate the WWE have not announced the names involved and have tried to privately deal with the situation, if some of the names are correct that are being bandered about on some websites I have to say I'm a little dissapointed based on comments made by some of these guys on recent tv shows. Past a "little dissapointment" there's nothing more I can add about my feelings about this situation. I tune into WWE programming to be entertained, what goes on behind the scenes is, frankly, non of my business... I hope that the guys in the WWE locker rooms aren't putting themselves in danger, thats pretty much the only thought I have to do with the subject matter. It's not my place to pass judgement on the personal choices and decisions - however good or bad they are - on a bunch of guys I've never met and only know through WWE programming. I do believe WWE will rule with an iron fist and do what is right for its tallent and for the business we all love. On a side note Jim, something I've always wondered.. with the Taboo Tuesday/Cyber Sunday PPVs.. do the creative team have a back up plan if the guys they're hoping to be voted in matches aren't picked by the fans? Looking forward to seeing the WWE in the UK again in the fall. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, many fans, and everyone who isn't a fan will say that this came about only due to the congress thing. So what. The important fact is that the wellness program is getting tough on those who are using harmful substances. You all should read Lance Storm's recent blog. He basicly states that we should all rally behind the wrestlers that don't use drugs. As usual Lance hits the nail on the head. This would also be a great deterent for talent NOT to use enhancement drugs. I'm always saddened when I hear of yet another former wrestler dying. What do you do when your childhood heros fall like dominos? Demand drug free wrestling. Better for the kids idolizing and better for the talent entertaining us all.

Hi JR! Excellent commentary and I agree with all the points you made. I do echo the sentiments of one of the other posts you have received though, which is that although WWE have taken the right action by suspending the guys whose names were made public, I really think that anyone can tell guys like Batista, Cena, Lashley etc are on the juice and by punishing guys like poor Nova who isn't even on the active roster at the moment and not doing anything about Batista, it is really sending mixed messages. On one hand, WWE is punishing people who have been named in the press, but on the other hand, WWE is turning a blind eye to someone like Batista, who at his age, with all the travelling he does working for WWE, I don't think there is any way he could look half the way he does now. He is a walking advertisement for steroids the way his veins stick out a few inches from arms like that, it's disturbing and something should be done about him as soon as possible. I definitely think that if WWE are cleaning things up in the business, it really needs to be fair all the way across the company. I don't think Funaki or Chavo should be punished while Batista, Cena & HHH get to juice up and act like nothing's going on. I think to a fan or a non-wrestling fan, just one look at Batista would make people think WWE are not trying to clean things up, even if they are for everyone else. I feel bad for wrestlers to a large extent . I really feel like something else needs to be done as well as getting them off drugs. I think that the schedules should be reduced and maybe even give them a ring with more give to it so that taking bumps 4 days a week doesn't wear them down so much that they have to take pain pills. Some of the bumps these wrestlers take are just brutal and even the average ones grind you down they have to do them regularly. I've heard some of the bumps they take compared to the whiplash effect you get in a car crash, which I wish could be changed. I think the ring in ROH has a lot more give to it and I think that this would be an excellent thing for WWE to implement if possible. I would like WWE to get wrestlers away from drugs, but I would also like some things to be put into place to prevent wrestlers from being in so much pain that they feel the only way to get through it is to take them. Sure, there are some examples, like Lance Storm, who prove that it's possible to be a great, successful wrestler without abusing drugs, but due to the injuries he has had, even he had to retire from the constant grind. I'm not condemning WWE, but as a fan who cares about the wrestlers, I would really like to see the reasons for taking drugs eliminated as well as the drugs themselves. Many Thanks for reading!! Kind Regards, David

Jr. I know you have no control over this but do you think kurt angle and/or rvd matches will still be shown on 24/7 even though theyre not with the wwe anymore?

I have to echo the comments of many and thank you for your patience in continuing with these blogs. As true fans, it is important for us to be able to channel thoughts and feelings on the progression of the compnay in the direction of someone who cares and can help feed this back. I thank you again for giving us that opportunity and I personally love to be able to read someone from the inside of the business' true thoughts. October in Glasgow can't come soon enough.

On the money, JR as usual. Some of those who say it is about time, I wonder how they would fare in charge of so many individuals? It has got to be hard to "ride herd" or monitor so many talents on so many different schedules, even with mandatory testing. It is not hard to tell from the names from the list of wrestlers from the online pharmacy who was part of this, and what has transpired on RAW and Smackdown tapings the last few days to tell who was involved, and some of the names were a surpise to say the least. But I have heard mentioned in more than one of the books by WWE performers that Vince is a fair man and is, in the right circumstances, a man given to be easy to forgive someone stepping over the line. He is always ready to give a second chance, so long as you dont abuse that part of his nature. And as long as there is no long history of the same offenses. The names I saw all appear to be some of the harder workers of the company and I am sure they will make amends for what they have done when they come back. I, too, am waiting to see who steps up, and raises their game a couple of notches, now that this opportunity has materialized. It should make the next couple of months til Survivor Series VERY interesting to say the least.

JR hate to bother you again by any chance do you know why the first WarGames was not on The Ric Flair & The FourHorsemen DVD....You know the classic one...Horseman vs SuperPowers & Road Warriors?

mr. ross, I believe that it's high time to talk about something else. how about that sooner defense?? they really played well. they are overshadowed at the moment by sam bradford, and that is well deserved. I also believe that coach stoops should give josh heupel the bank. josh can coach. the job he did in making paul thompson a nice qb was great, now to take a redshirt freshman and make him into a guy that looks like he's been running the offense for three years is phenominal. I didn't like the push the o line had down in the red zone, but hopefully they will have that fixed by saturday. i've been nervous about this one for a long time, jim, and i just hope that we play up to our potential, and we take care of the ball, and play responcible and smart football, and may the good lord let us win by thirty. by the way jim, we're 1-0 since you opened your doors. thanks.

Mr. Ross: Wondering if you know what one of my favorite wrestlers Larry Zbyszko is up to? Do you think Larry Zbyszko would ever be an asset to the WWE? do you think Larry would make a good manager? Trainer? or on air talent? and even if he was never brought in full time, do you think Larry Zbyszko will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame? Thanks Bill Collmer

I am a loyal WWE fan according to some I am blindly loyal to WWE. However I think people need to realise the lie detector test has been around a whole lot longer than drug testing and people find ways to fool that machine to.No matter what happens in the long and short runs of WWE I will support it until it is no longer around. On a saide note I was wondering if you knew if WWE was working out a deal with Time Warner Cable foe WWE 24/7 I hear great things about it and just love watching new and old wrestling

As I tuned in to Summerslam and watched the return of Rey Mysterio and Triple H, I couldn't help feeling a little underwhelmed. Do you think by advertising a superstars return it takes away the surprise element? I can understand one return being advertised but what if Rey came out and attacked Chavo, surely that would have made things a little more exciting!

JR, why has the WWE recently decided to announce taping results on the WWE website before its actual airing date? I've been watching CM Punk for almost 10 years and I would have really loved to see the title win live, completely unaware. I'm glad he's getting the opportunity to be a player...but I would have loved to have been surprised, especially on free tv.

Hello Jim, I am probably your greatest fan out there and I am taking a road trip soon to come eat at your restaurant all the way from New Jersey. How often are you there? please write back.

I'd just like to take the time to thank you for continuing to provide what i feel is an inciteful look at the wrestling business that i love, from a person who loves it too. I always enjoy reading what JR has to say and nearly always agree with it. Also, regardless of what has happened, the wwe has continued to supply strong wrestling shows with some of the best matches ive seen ( HBK vs Cena, Orton Vs Cena and taker/batista to name a few) and i look forward to watching in the coming months

When can we expect a Randy Savage Hall of Fame induction? I really don't care about WWE's Wellness Policy. I won't care about watching WWE until Savage is given his due respect.

Hi JR, What are your thoughts on the WWE producing a DVD of DX’s earlier escapades from the 90’s? That stuff was hilarious. Would you mind putting a bug in someones ear? Has a tentative date been set for HBK’s return? Thanks, Charles

Jim, First time reader, first time responder. Great commentary! It's good to see someone with clout in the organization not sugar coat something like this. Kudos. I'll be back to read again!

Hi JR i would like to say how much of a massive fan of yours i am however i was wondering what your opinion on the ECW brand is. For me i am a massive fan of smackdown and RAW which are clearly the staples of WWE but not so fond of the ECW brand. I know you have been faced with these same kinds of opinions many times but surely that must show you they are widely held. The brand has so much potential to be so different, i mean whats up with extreme rules matches, its hardly EXTREME championship wrestling when not all of the matches take place under extreme rules, its no different to RAW or SMACKDOWN in that respect. taping it alongside smackdown is probably a cheaper way of doing things but a seperate show at the Hammerstein ballroom or somewhere of that nature would provide a much better atmosphere ( although because of the way its being run that might not be a good idea e.g Big Show vs Batista and the reaction the crowd gave them) . Why not instead of having gimmick wrestlers on the show sign some top indy talent the hardcore faithful would probably become new viewers again and the current viewers would likely be impressed by the ability of some of these guys. Sorry for venting my opinions on your website, i just wondered if you agreed with any of them? yours sincerely James H

i just want to say thank you jr for your honest and blunt comments regarding all of this "wellness policy" scandal. i have and will continue to be a fan of wwe no matter what is said or done. i just hope this doesnt affect other wrestlers and they get a big push out of it. and i hope all other supposed fans can read your blogs and hear from someone who knows what they re talking about. please wish my blessings and luck to all involved at wwe. love you, amber ; )

I was reading the comments left by your readers and just wanted to respond to the person that said, "...I would first of all be completely shell shocked if Triple H and John Cena were not on some type of prohibited substance that enhances the physical look ..." You know, it is not impossible to build an impressive looking pysique without the aid of illegal substances. People tend to forget that there IS benefit to good old fashioned hard work. For a regular guy, I've managed to build a somewhat above average body with limited trips to the gym due to my work/home schedule and I still have been accused by some of being on illegal substances although I have never tried them. If I had the time and motivation to devote more time to my physical appearance (such as working out more and eating right... my diet is HORRIBLE), I don't think it's far fetched to expect results like a John Cena or HHH. I think another unnamed victim in all the recent controversy is the legit "natural" bodybuilder who DOES not use drugs but is now assumed to be using them.

also mr ross, a man made a post on yer site, it stated that marc mero is talking alot of crap basically. Is it hes talking alot of crap or is it that noone likes to hear the truth? whats wrong with mero running around saying i want to save lives? its not his fault the media in the usa are a bunch of gullible suckers, i lol'd when he read out his list of people who have died, some died of heart issues related to drugs but alot were outside the ring, adrian adonis comes to mind, andre the giant, dino bravo, i wish wwe would send someone like yourself to cnn and just let them know what is truth and what is BS.

hey JR, AWESOME MAAN, i cant beleive u actually responded to the wellness policy stuff. I love it, cuz here on the net, u never know what to beleive and what not to beleive u know so its nice to know that i atleast can beleive you :) I was wondering tho MR ROSS, your opinion on the following. I was curious, im from winnipeg, WWE a few years back hired a local winnipeg wrestler, Kenny OMEGA, he was released or asked for his release i cant recall. were u the one that signed him? also what is your opinion of john laurinatis. i hear alot of guys dont like him, i hear hes a problem, i hear he doesnt have the passion like u do. also jr, i agree, now is the time for people like CM PUNK, Harry Smith, Teddy Hart, Colt Cabana, Its time to push them and bring them in and let them do what they can do. Also i thought the segment with HHH and Carlito and Vince on the raw where HHH returned was crap, i was wondering what u think of this so called entertainment when in reality its just a rehash of old DX stuff. How come WWE creative isnt creative?

JR - I have faith in the business, it's talent, and the management. These dark clouds overhead right now have been hanging there for along time; its just finally now the worst of the worst had to happen for them to be dealt with. This storm will pass JR and the cream of the crop will rise to the top! Your ability to be frank and honest keeps my interests aboard as i don't feel colluded in corporate doublespeak. You should be picked up as PR Director too sir, the people just want the truth, no matter what the consequences mean to the bottom lines, dollar signs, and egos. God Bless.

J.R, all of your entries are great and I think they are always of top-notch quality. I am actually quite dsiappointed with some wrestlers actually failing the wellness policy, but I also think that it is for the best of WWE. Thankfully, my favorite wrestler Shelton Benjamin is clean from performance-inducing substances and I know his athleticism is completely natural. However, he hasn't climbed the roster yet even after being a three-time Intercontinental Champion and beating world-class superstars like Triple H multiple times. As you have said before and I am sure many people would agree with you, he is the best pure wrestler in WWE. If he were allowed a title shot against John Cena, I believe he would soar. Just my thoughts on a wrestler who is more talented than three-quarters of the roster.

As a life long fan, as many of us are, I have adored generations of great stars in this business we hold in such high regard. I have respected so many people in the wrestling industry over the years, both those whom I have watched grow to fame and those who enjoyed success in the past, the latter through, books and interviews. It never fails to sadden me when a wrestler passes but it adds great dispair when one leaves us way too soon. If the wellness program, no matter how intrusive it has to be, means careers and health last longer then it is surely beyond reproach. the WWE is always at the head of the queue when it comes to the very best talent out there and so may it go on. I am sure that the company will do all in it's power to ensure the safety and well being of all the great men and women it employs. If only some of the wondreful talents and truly amazing people the business, we as fans and of course their families, have lost had been protected by such a policy. I for one, and i am certainly not alone do not want to shed anymore tears over atheletes who leave us all too soon.We miss everyone who is gone and hope they did not go in vain. I commend the the WWE for it's courage to take action, it's programming be damned and to do the right thing in this esspecially hard time.

JR, you should be ashamed of yourself for your participation in the Monday Night Raw of Sep 3, 2007. After that disgusting performance by Triple H with the sledgehammer, you sum it all up by saying "Triple H reigned supreme here tonight." That is a disgusting, pathetic and completely lunatic thing to say. This is what you think children should be emulating? Reigning supreme when you attack someone with a sledgehammer? And after the guy is down, attack him again? You disgust me. I know it's a script, but with your clout, you should be doing something to correct things like this. Your participation condones it and you deserve to be pitied.

Hey JR I was just wondering on your thoughts about Muhammad Hassan. I personally loved his gimmick and thought it was great that the crowd hated him so much cause nothing makes a heel better than the crowd hatting you. I definately think he was a future world champion. But what I guess I am really asking is do you think he will ever be back and with that same gimmick.

J.R., Your absolutely right, these wrestlers made a decision to violate the policy and they need to "fess up" to their mistakes. I just think that, while what he did was a horrible tragedy, you can't ignore Chris Benoits skills in the ring. It's a shame that everyone in the wrestling business seems to be paying for what he did though. Blaming wrestling for what happened is like blaming Smith and Wesson for the war in Iraq just because their product is being used.
