JR's Headed to Dallas...Randon Thoughts and Personal Opinions

Posted in:

Here's hoping that everyone has a great Labor Day weekend and that my Sooners, without the best tight end in college football Jermaine Gresham, can win in Jerry's house in Dallas this Saturday night against BYU. I'll be roaming the sideline wearing my signature, black hat so keep an eye out on the ESPN Prime Time Broadcast. The BBQ'ed Random thoughts are ready to serve.....

Sorry that I haven't had time to update our Q&A section this week but I've been busier than a fruit merchant. Keep 'em coming as I will get on a roll soon and address all that make the cut. I suggest that you read some of the archived Q&A's not only for entertainment and informational purposes but to also make sure that you aren't wasting your time asking a question that has been beat to death like a Government Mule.

I can tell you that any questions regarding my contract status have been body slammed meaning I am not and will not address them. There is so much BS floating around about my employment status it has become embarrassing. WWE is pleased with my work and perceives me as an asset that they want to retain. Once we officially begin our negotiations we will see where it takes us. In the meantime, I have no apprehensions as to those negotiations as I have another business to help build in JR's Family BBQ and this website for that matter. I am stay extremely busy as many of you know and perhaps too busy as my smarter than me wife has reminded me several times in the past few weeks. She's right, for the record.

Plus, it's football season which is my favorite time of the year and I refuse to get immersed in any thing that takes my mind away from my work and the Sooners. End of story....for now.

Congrats to WWE for signing Nigel McGuinness who has been wrestling for Ring of Honor which is a helluva group of guys who obviously love the wrestling biz. McGuinness is a sound, in ring hand who can talk and will hopefully realize his dreams at the next level.

I read where The King and I have only done 3 appearances together which sounds about right as I rarely do personal appearances even though I like them. It's about having the time to do them which perhaps I can address in the years to come. Meeting wrestling fans has always been fun to me and I've certainly got a fair amount of catching up to do.

I was a little surprised to read of Steve Austin's "injury on the set" as I, perhaps erroneously, thought a gash in the head for Austin was like another day at the office. Steve certainly approached it that way but he is one of the tougher individuals that I have ever known. I hear great things about the two films that he now has in the can not including the film he shot with Sylvester Stallone called "The Expendables." Steve has immersed himself in his film work just as passionately has he did his ring work.

Love it when I read a report about a wrestling TV event and it merely clumps the broadcasters together as "the announcers." Yes, I'm biased but try watching a wrestling TV show with the sound muted. I suggest it might not be as entertaining. Even when we "announcers" screw up at times that provides many internet fans something more to bitch about.

When I read of some one writing about "the announcers" I think of the old lyric, "I've been thru the desert on a horse with no name."

WWE's three days in France in September, Nice and two days in Paris, are already sold out.

I was up at 5 Friday morning to make my KOKH Fox 25 morning news gig with my weekly football predictions. You can check it out on their website. Let me know your thoughts. Nice thing was I was back home a little after 7 as my piece of business airs live about 6:45 a.m.

Keep an eye on Drew McIntyre on Friday Night Smackdown this week and in upcoming weeks. McIntyre has potential and he will hopefully reach his potential and eventually more into main event status. McIntyre is from Scotland and has an athletic look.

Don't forget to check out my Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m. central time appearances on www.1560thegame.com  in Houston with Sean and John. We'll talk wrestling and football every week for about 10-12 minutes. Notice that I did not call Sean and John "the announcers." They are also looking for your feedback. Some Texas fans were not enamored with my work last week which comes as no surprise as many of the 'Horns Haters dislike any thing Oklahoma. That's their prerogative but I refuse to become a "hater."

Hope to see many of you Sunday afternoon at the Dragon Gate event in Chicago. For me, as a fan, it's the chance to see some unique wrestling and one never knows if a future star will be displaying their wares on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Be well and please stop by our store if you have the time. We have finalized a deal to test market our sauces and ketchup in the Homeland Grocery store chain in Oklahoma soon which we hope will lead to bigger and better things in that area.

Boomer Sooner!

Hi J.R

Great blog,  Just wanted to say that I see nothing wrong with announcers specially SD and ECW. Just have a problem with Micheal Cole, he always blind sides the talent of many superstars as if he has personal issues with superstars who comes forth like villians (Who i think have huge potential and abilities) he always says nasting things about people and forgets that the superstars are great competitors, nonetheless I wish Jerry Lawler all the best of luck in his race to become Mayor.

I wish that I could attent Breaking Point but I can't and hope you are sold out before the end of the week, 9000 tickets does not sound good. I'm amazed that Raw is sold out every week. I drove pass you're BBQ joint, which i was on my way. Great job and I hope you grow and expant real fast

This is my first time posting a comment and I want to first say that J.R., you are the best to ever do it in my generation growing up watching wrestling in the late 80's.  I have been reading your blog through other websites and figured I'd join.

I love your comment about wrestling getting away from size and focusing on talent.  I will say that Smackdown is the best show on tv right now of all promotions and brands.  I am watching the Morrison-Mysterio match on my dvr now and it is everything I heard about it.  I know you are a WWE guy but I will say that TNA dropped the ball.  They had a chance to get some young lions instead went for WWE's leftovers.  Now the WWE is bringing in Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson, two guys I believe will rejuvinate the WWE possibly back to where it was in the Austin era if done right.

Lastly, I don't know who is writing for Smackdown (Michael Hayes?), but he or she deserves booker of the year.

1-I truly prefer the current WWE product to any period of the past.  The product is mostly family-friendly, supportive of wresting as sport and performance art, and does not waste the viewers time with unnecessary interviews.

2-Have you ever watched Professional wrestling without an announcer of any type?  What were your impressions, and how might it improve one's understanding of the product?  Your announcing has always in my experience been quite outstanding.

3-Do you believe if the circumstances were in order, the WWE might consider a Southern Wrestling promotion, which would tour no further west than Texas and no further north than Virginia?

As always, best wishes, and much thanks,

Joseph

Hey JR.

I first have to say that I respect you. I think you are a phenominal commentator, and you are such a huge icon in the wrestlng business

Now, with that said. BYU 14 OU 13. I am from and reside in the great state of Utah. Go Cougars! If you hang out with BYU more, they will probably teach you the Haka that they were doing after the game.

I was thinking back to 1984, when Brigham Young University won the national championship. Barry Switzer and Bryant Gumble (spelling ?) were bad mouthing BYU, saying that they didn't deserve to be national champions. I don't know how you felt about all that, but, as a BYU fan, I do have to say 25 years later, "How sweet it is to beat Oklahoma".

One other thing. The only thing I wish was differnt right now in the wrestling world, is if you were calling the play by play, like you did on Raw. Keep up the good work. You are right up there with Gorilla Monsoon as one of the best in the business. Take care, and Go Cougars!

Sorry that Sam Bradford went out in the first quarter.   When CollogeGame Day comes to Norman at I want u to make picks against Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreet and Chris Fowler. I can hear u say it is going to be a slobberknocker and Lee saying not so fast.  What is the next legends of wrestling on WWE Classics on Demands. I more more classic progaming on . I live for baseball, collge and NFL Football and Pro Wrestlinng.

Hey J.R.--Do you think Don Leo Jonathan is smiling down from Heaven right now??

" try watching a wrestling TV show with the sound muted. I suggest it might not be as entertaining."

Good blog, JR, except for that one bit. I regularly watch wrestling with the sound off, because the commentators/announcers actually irritate me. I know they have to tell a story, but I liked the old-fashioned play-by-play guys who called the match, and didn't go on about people who weren't even at ringside! There may be stories to tell, but I'm always more interested in the story the wrestlers in the ring are telling, not what the company wants me to hear about instead. Muting the sound makes the programming much more interesting, in my opinion.

Tulsaderek, Gresh will make his decision by Monday on how he wants to handle it.  As of yesterday he and his family were leaning towards rehab, but if he has the surgery, he'll still most probably be back by the Miami game.  Boomer Sooner

Happy to hear about McGuinness, moreso maybe than Bryan Danielson. Both guys have been big fish in a small pond for YEARS now but I always thought Nigel had the better chance of making it big - look-wise and on the mic. Hope he gets a decent chance to show waht he's capable of, and stays healthy.

Both guys are as good a pair of techical wrestlers AND in-ring storytellers as anyone else I can think of right now.

Glad to see JR acknowledge Drew Mc. Sometimes you just have to see someone for a minute or two to realize talent. And unlike so many others lately, he has a very important skill, as Ross pointed out-he can talk on the mike.

The loss of Gresham is gonna hurt, no doubt. I'm in Tulsa, and there's been no word yet on how long the big guy will be sidelined. Folks, this is a 1st round draft choice next season. Since OU plays real teams instead of all cupcakes like certain other squads (ahem, Texas. Excuse me, Florida), we'll have to adjust accordingly. Still, here's Sat. score-OU-33 BYU-20

I hate to disagree with Ross, especially on a subject he knows worlds more than I...but every time I watch RAW, I would rather have the TV on mute. The same goes for ECW.

JR, I don't doubt for one minute that you've been busier than a three legged cat in a litter box!  I wish everyone could lead busy and productive lives.  But then again, they wouldn't be in any business, since they don't have anything better to do but spread around rumors!  It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round, they say!

Have a safe trip here to my neck of the woods! Be safe, as always! Say hello to Jan for me, too!

Hey JR: Just 3 quick questions:

1: Do you have order deliveries outside the US (I live in Tijuana, Mexico)?

2: How feasible do you think it would be for WWE to work with some of the bigger or more established promotions from Mexico and/or Japan? maybe that would help kickstart the so-called "slump" that the company seems to be in, showcase different talent combinations and also take advantage of the great popularity of WWE in the foreign market.

3:  Do you follow the NFL at all? if so who do you like?

Go Bolts!

Oh hell yeah on Nigel McGuinness.  This guy has skill and he is excellent on the stick. This guy is a perfect fit for WWE.  God I hope they don't bury him

Timothy Kendrick

The unfortunate thing here with the whole annoucers/broadcasters problem you are having has much more to do with the fact back in the old days of wrestling, the broadcasters had been more involved with what was going on in the event rather then just seated ringside calling the matches. Back in the early-mid 2000s when you were still on raw with the king, you guys as individuals were more involved with the actual storyline that was going on. Now, especially with you and Grisham on SD, you guys have not been part of the storylines, all you guys do is announce matches and call them. making it seem like your job was really just to sit ringside and call it like u see it, not really give any personal insight to what was going on since you were not heavily involved.

Ring of Honor has been great for WWE fans - CM Punk was their top guy for quite a while and came to WWE with a whole lot to contribute.  I'm glad to hear that more of their top guys will also be coming to WWE.  You gotta love the indies.  They provide a great platform for young guys to learn the craft.

Boomer Sooner!!!

Enjoy the game.  I'll be out in Norman on Wed for next weeks game.  I'll tell Tommy to look for you on the sidelines as he'll be there with his daughter and son in law.  We'll get Gresh back for Miami (another one I'll attend) and UT I'm hoping.  Again, great site and I can't wait to eat some great bbq next week!!!  Hope you are open after the game.  WWE wouldn't be the same without you.  I have watched since Vince's dad ran the show and I put you in the same category as Solie, which to me is saying a ton.  Hopefully they can start to push guys like Hager on Raw.  Just not into that show like I used to be.  Glad to see the ROH talent being signed and tried out.

Boomer Sooner JR!  Hope your Dallas trip is highly successful.

Hey JR I'm a huge fan of your work. You'll be in my area for the OU game at Jerry's Death Star. I hope OU wins even though I'm a Longhorns fan as that way the Red River Shootout will more than likely be for the right to play Florida for the national title. Oh and WWE really wouldn't be the same without you so I hope they reward you with a big lucrative contract as nobody deserves it more than you. Boomer Sooner!!
