J.R.'s Superstar of the Week - Ric Flair

Posted in:

Happy New Year from under the black, 200X Resistol hat from the WWE’s resident Okie, who is just returning to Norman, Okla., after leaving the woodshed in Glendale, Ariz., following the whipping that West Virginia University put on my Sooners Wednesday night in the Fiesta Bowl (which I watched from the OU sideline). The Sooners losing another BCS Bowl game wasn’t exactly the way I wanted to spend another birthday.

Nonetheless, as the King would say, “One can’t grieve forever.” One of my favorite events of the year is just around the corner, and that is the 21st Royal Rumble, which I look forward to every January.

Even the “village idiot” couldn’t screw up this week’s Raw Superstar of the Week as there is only one logical choice for Monday Night Raw #762 from Greensboro, N.C. – and that is “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. For my money, sports-entertainment (that’s the politically-correct term, you know) is about conveying clearly-defined, raw emotions and over the years, no one I can recall seeing in person elicited more emotions from fans than Ric Flair. I hope “Naitch” wrestles for years to come, but we all know that sooner or later, Flair will lose and that loss will be his last. Per order of our “beloved” Chairman, the storied career of Ric Flair ends with his next loss.

Hey Mr Ross! Firstly - like all who come to your website no doubt, love your work and really enjoy being entertained by WWE events, both TV each week and Live whenever you visit the UK. Secondly - Me and three friends are coming over to the USA, for the first time, in November - travelling route 66. One of our scheduled stops is at Oklahoma city - so we plan to come to JR's for Lunch or Dinner (or both)! How do we get there and when would we be likely (I am not looking for a certainty) to meet you there - especially with your new restaurant opening soon? Thanks again for everything- some people look like they do things for the money, others for their 'customers' or fans - you definately fall into the second category.

I did a search and I'm thinking no one's asked this yet... Although his contirbutions in the WWE didn't amount to much, Shane Douglas has had an impact in WCW and ECW and in the life of Mick Foley. I'm sure the latter doesn't help one qualify for the WWE Hall of Fame, but what about the other two? Do you think Shane Douglas, since I hear is retired and working at a Target somewhere on the East Coast, would ever be intucted into the WWE Hall of Fame?

Your thoughts on WWE changes i have thought up. (2HOURS)the A show RAW: 25 superstars, new Raw champion belt, womans champions belt, new HALL-OF-FAME belt. (2HOURS)the B show SMACKDOWN: 25 superstars, new SMACKDOWN champion belt, new Vincent Kennedy Mcmahon Achievement of Greatness belt, new SMACKDOWN tag-team champions belt (1HOUR30min)the C show ECW: 16 superstars, ECW championship belt, new ECW tag-team champions belt. (30min)the D show HEAT: 9 superstars, new HEAT championship belt.

Hey JR, I agree that when it comes to raw emotions, no one can display them in the style that Ric Flair can. Anyway, I couldn't help but notice on a recent episode of 24/7's Roundtable you were smoking a cigarette. Out of pure curiosity, what kind of cigarettes do you smoke?

Hello J.R., Just for the record, I love your website and I like your blogs...they are very informative. I only have one question really. I was wondering if WWE was ever planning (or thinking) of making an actual building or place for the WWE Hall of Fame? A place where fans can actually go and see pictures, videos, and maybe even meet the different wrestlers, managers, etc. that have helped contribute to the business somehow. Other wrestling Hall of Fames actually have a building where fans can go. Do you think we might see something like that someday or just the usual Hall of Fame Ceremony before WrestleMania? Or is there already something like that I dont know? I love watching the Hall of Fame, its so amazing to see what other people have done to help shape the business of what it is today. I just thought I would ask, it would be a good idea in my opinon. You could also sell merchandise and what not at this special building. Thanks and have a great day! -Samir C.

I enjoying listening to you on RAW each week – you are a true asset to the show! I also enjoying reading your commentary each week and the comments posted on J.R.’s Blog. Although, I enjoy reading the “blog”, I never anticipated submitting my own comments. However, after seeing Mr. Kennedy get the best of HBK the last two weeks and Jeff Hardy pinning Triple H a couple of weeks ago, I just can’t help myself. I understand the need to build up the Superstars of tomorrow, but when you take two of RAW’s best and force them to obviously perform below their capabilities to make the other superstars look better is a rip off. I like Mr. Kennedy and I can see the potential in him and Jeff Hardy but either of them beating HBK or Triple H at this point is unbelievable. At least when HBK (he is the best) and Triple H did their part in putting over John Cena it was believable. The matches between Shawn Michaels and John Cena were fantastic! I’m hoping for a miracle as far as the Royal Rumble is concerned – right now there isn’t a match made that would entice me to fork over another $39.99 or whatever the price may be. However, another reformation of DX would change my mind – I miss the magic created by Vince, Shane, Shawn and Triple H and especially the rapport between HBK and Triple H. One of my favorite moments from the Tribute to the Troops was seeing HBK and Triple H laughing together on the plane. In closing, I hope that the WWE figures out a way of building their superstars of tomorrow that would allow HBK and Triple H to continue to perform at the level we all know they are capable of.

Let me start of by saying that I’ve been a fan for years. The picture you have with Sting and Eddie Gilbert took me back, I remember watching you guys growing up. Ever since I can remember watching wrestling… everyone from Stan Hanson, Bruiser Brody, to Buddy Landel, I remember you being there for some reason or another. I love your take on the business and they way you seem to keep it honest and try not to give in to the marks out there. There are a few things that I need to get your perspective on, since you’ve always been the consummate commentator/interviewer… Cena’s gimmick, the “Hardcore” Soldier is totally different from the “Hardcore” Rapper gimmick. I read somewhere that he had to stop going freestyle on some of the guys because they couldn’t rap, so he was making them look stupid by doing it. The “Hardcore” Soldier is such a departure from the “light” and “fun” gimmick of the rapper. Do you think he’ll ever return to that? It has been said for years that Vince McMahon gives preferential treatment to people of a certain skin tone, whereas others don’t get this. Even though The Rock held the WWE title on several occasions, it could be argued that he only held that title out of respect for what his family has done for the business; while on the same token, top contenders like Booker T, Bobby Lashley and Giant Singh (Great Khali) are moved aside. Now, Booker T held he WH title, which by all accounts is nothing more than the T.V. title, and not the WWE title… the actual company title. Khali fought Cena for the title and was quickly moved to SmackDown. Elijah Burk is certainly coming along in ECW, but again, the ECW title is noting more than a T.V. title. What are your thoughts on this?

Hey JR, Do you think we'll ever hear "professional wrestling" again? Thanks for writing your blog. Michael

hello jr im not one to complain but i dont agree with you about ric flair .i think he is washed up . its sad to watch him go out and have hhh drag him thruogh a barley watchable match. you were right there was emotion people were sad to see a legend stick around to long .in my opinion he is taking up a spot and holding on for that last bit of glory. i have a bet with my friend that yall will let him win the rumble in away i hope im wrong but ive picked the rumble winner every year for about five years. i think chris benoit was the last person to deserve it .i mean hell rey winning it was to predictable but again this is just my opinion.sorry to bitch but its just i know people who are trying to get to where he is .and as long as he is there that spot is coverd .if i had away to tell ric him self i would .well you have a good one your friend logan

I was just wondering if you could tell us anything about the upcoming WWE DVD based on Sting. I understand that WWE owns the WCW video library (along with pretty much every other wrestling video library, right? ha ha), but I just thought WWE would want to stay away from a wrestler in another promotion. Also, you say there are too many championships, if you let’s say were in a position to possibly remove any championships from the WWE, what would they be? One last thing, if you don’t mind, with so many Superstars appearing on other brands and the SmackDown/ECW talent exchange, do you think that the WWE may eventually deactivate the brand extension, allowing Superstars to appear on all brands? Thank you, Tommy West Virginia

Hey jim ross.im a huge fan..could u tell me whatever happened to ludvig borga and why he didnt get a bigger push in wwe.

So, everyone knows that WWE plans to "end"(retire) Flairs career at Wrestlmania but do u know who he will face?

Hi JR, I got two great gifts for Christmas this year. The Shawn Michaels DVD Set and the Greatest Ladder Matches DVD set. As I watched both of these for some strange reason I thought about the presidential race this year. How would it be if the primaries were settled in ladder matches and the final race in a last man (or woman if Hillary gets in) standing match. Do you have any picks as to who might win? This might be the result of too much LR's Jalapeno Honey Mustard at bedtime.

Hey JR! I've been writing in your blog for awhile, but have never received a response from you unfortunately. I know you read alot of these though, so it's no big deal. How is your relationship with Eric Bischoff, as well as your relationship with Paul Heyman? I know on TV your character doesn't like either one of them, but in real life, how are your relationships with them? Also, do you think Jonathan Coachman will be a good fit as a color commentator on SmackDown! with Michael Cole? I found JBL to be quite commical at times, and definitely improved since he became the color commentator, but Jonathan Coachman on the otherhand, when he was doing HEAT with Al Snow, I thought they worked well together with Jonathan being the Play-by-Play and Al being color, but he wasn't as good with Todd Grisham as Play-by-Play and himself as color. I recall that when he was the Raw "heel" color commentator vs. Joey Styles and "King", or Yourself and "King", he wasn't very well liked either. Do you think it will work out better between himself and Michael Cole, even though he's never been a full-time wrestler? Thanks, JT PS. Have fun on Raw this Monday.

Hello JR! I just finished watching the World Class DVD and I wanted your thoughts on Gary Hart. I think he is an amazing story teller and I could listen to him talk all day. He still has a great mind and I would love to see him working for the WWE in some capacity. Happy New Year! Andy M from Illinois

Hi JR. I've commented several times on your blogs, and I think it's great what you do. Taking time out of your busy days to speak to us, one on one...the fans. It's really nice to know that some people in the wrestling business still care enough to talk to us on a day to day basis. Any, I wanted to say this. I'm setting at home, watching my WWE On Demand Bash At the Beach with Flair and Hogan, the first meeting. Classic match. Also can't forget the amazing match with Steamboat and Austin. Anyway... I see that then read an internet news site. I noticed more news on Sting signing with TNA again. And it clicked. Although this would never happen, I'm going to ask your thoughts. I beg you answer me. I would love to hear your thoughts. What if...Vince some how talked Sting into a one match deal. I would even imagine Flair would love it as well. What if Sting was Flair's final opponent at Wrestle Mania? Could you imagine. Possible Flair's greatest opponent. One last time. I see it very fitting that Flair being the one who put Sting on the map with their classic at Clash 89, a match I believe you called, square off in his final match against the man called Sting. I would so mark out. For me, it would be the biggest match ever. Period.

Hey JR, After reading Joey Styles' "Styles' Files," I have to admit that I am amazed by Stevie Richards' tenacity to stay in the ring this long. I had always wondered why his voice was so raspy, and because of Styles' column I now know. My question for you is when do you think Stevie will be back in the ring, or as I should put it, back on our TV screens? Although Styles said that he expects to see Stevie return with little fanfare, Richards has definitely found a fan in me. Thanks again for your awesome commentary on Monday Nights, Zack Grant

Hello JR, Hope all is well in the new year. I had to tell you, I saw a comment you responded to that had to deal with there being a big difference in grilling and barbqueing. I thought it was funny because it reminded me of something that happened to me about 8 years ago. First of all I am from Texas and I had moved to Colorado. Where I met a friend who invited me and my wife over for a barbque. We went and JR, it wasn't barbque at all it was grilled meat. Now tell me JR, how in the world is someone going to invite a Texan over for barbque and try to pass it off as just being grilled meat. Also, I was wondering when the WWE or you by yourself come to Texas where do you like getting your barbque from. I mean given the fact that there is no better barbque then in the back yard with relatives.

Hey JR, Thanks for giving us fans you insite each week, its much appreciated. I know you have nothing to do with talent relations anymore but i was wondering in your opinion if you could ever see Muhammad Hassan returning to the WWE, I realize his character was contreversial but being a fan of the WWE is about "suspending disbelief" I really enjoyed Mark Copani's portrayal of the character and he did have the ability to get "the" reaction which is of course what wrestling is all about....I wanna go to that arena and boo and cuss the evil son of a gun but at the end of the day I appreciate his performance. I really confuses me that the media jumped on the anti-WWE bandwagon because of the Hassan character when week in week out nobody minds Jack Bauer killing evil muslim terrorists in 24? Muhammad Hassan wasnt a terrorist, he was a damn talented wrestler and I for one miss him and wish we could still see him perform.

Good Ol' J.R. I was wondering if you knew or heard of any progress on Bobby Lashley? He has been gone for some time now and personally, I miss his presence. Us fans hear about the progress of the likes of John Cena and HHH during their respective injuires but not a peep about Big Bobby. Whats up? Dan

Hey Jim! What's up? I hope everything's well.. Happy new year!:P I've met you on 17th April in Milan, at the Airport, I don't know if you can't remember, but I was excited! Did you like Italy? I loved the experience of being part of a live wwe show... is totally awesome, that was my first! Anyway, wwe will not come to Italy this April, and we're so sad about this. Do you know when Raw will be in Italy? We have to wait until April 09, or in your opinion we can hope for this November?:) and.. I'm a huge fan of HBK, cause of his "new" contract, in your opinion he can come 2 Italy even though there will be no tapings? Love and respect you Jim.. and scuse me for the lame english! Hugs From Italy Francesca
