As much as I would have enjoyed being in San Antonio, a great city, to personally be a part of the TLC PPV it was good to be home where I enjoyed the show. No, I don't get the PPV's for free....I paid retail.... thank you very much....and felt that I got my money's worth.
Here are some observations....
WWE TV production is slick. Big time look...clean albeit unique graphics...good music....as good as NBC is doing broadcasting Sunday night NFL football which I just finished watching the Eagles defeat the Giants.
The three man announce booth is challenging especially when the three man team doesn't regularly work with each other. I enjoyed the announcing of the trio tonight better than I did at the Survivor Series which would indicate that Cole, Lawler, and Striker were more comfortable working with each other in San Antonio. "Comfort" and "finding one's zone" are crucial when broadcasting live TV.
Christian and Shelton Benjamin really kicked off the PPV well and their Ladder Match was excellent from my perspective. Lots of risks, unforgiving ladders, overt demonstrations of mental and physical toughness by both guys. Good to see that when Christian got bloodied that the cut was medically addressed and the stoppage was explained. Fans are too close to the action at a WWE event for another's blood to be dispersed especially in today's world. Congrats to both ECW athletes for a great effort in launching the show. No specialty match on this card was better.
Drew McIntyre winning the IC Title did not shock me nor did it offend me. The Scot and John Morrison were challenged to follow the Ladder Match but did a solid job. McIntyre becoming the new IC Champ should set up some interesting scenarios in the future both for the IC Title and the World Title. I like both of these young wrestlers and feel that in time that they can become perennial main eventers. One could only wish that all the rosters had more veteran, main event depth as it can be challenging to create stars when they wrestle others who are also evolving. Nonetheless I like the future for both McIntyre and Morrison.
Even though the Divas have not been exactly embroiled in a red hot rivalry, although more has been done to perpetuate the Michelle McCool-Mickie James issue lately than most Diva matters, I thought overall the match was fine. Fans have to be given a significant reason and have that reason re-established over time for the audience to emotionally invest in any match. The ladies worked hard and I understood the ending of the match and it left the McCool/Mickie issue open.
Sheamus upsetting John Cena to win the WWE Title was a MAJOR shock to me. I mentioned in an earlier blog on Sunday that I liked surprises, especially surprises that are logical and believable, and this surpirse was that and more and really caught me off guard. Good stuff. It reminded me somewhat of many years ago when Stone Cold was red hot and he lost the WWE Title to Kane in a "First Blood" match. Sheamus' victory is a huge and bold step in the right direction for another, young talent. It will be interesting to see what sort of publicity is generated in Ireland as a result of Sheamus becoming the WWE Champion.
The Undertaker vs. Batista had the unenviable challenge of having to follow, arguably, the biggest upset/shocker of 2009. Really tough spot for the two, big men to perform their style of match in not to mention that most of us did not know what to expect in a "Chair Match." The re-start did not bother me as it seemed to ignite the crowd not to mention that Batista has a legit beef and a reason to continue to chase the champion. It certainly should make for viable material for Smackdown TV.
Funny...but it seemed to me watching at home that the Orton-Kofi issue was hotter a few weeks ago than it was Sunday night on PPV. It just might have been the crowd getting restless or looking ahead to the TLC bout. However, I thought the match was really solid and I was surprised that Orton won. Nonetheless I think that Kofi accounted himself well and is "this close" to being perceived as a full time main eventer. Even if Kofi had won I would have said the same thing. It just takes time to get to the next level but I do feel that Kofi has had some outstanding exposure on Raw the past few weeks especially around the time Kofi defaced Orton's NASCAR. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how dastardly Mr. RKO is that many fans just love to cheer Orton's antics. It's obvious that we live in a defiant society. Orton is a star and Kofi's going to be one, too.
The final match of the evening, after the fans had seen a little of every thing and with most sitting in their seats for over three hours, was also positioned in a tough spot on the card. To their credit, DX and Jeri-Show had an innovative bout especially towards the end of the match and it felt like the event ended the proper way. This match wasn't the daredevil, thrill show that previous TLC bouts have been in yesteryear but I still felt like a good story was told and the match kept my interest after watching almost three hours of TV. The closing sequence was unique and memorable as I don't recall ever seeing any thing quite like it. Seeing HBK secure the two, tag title belts hanging above the ring in Shawn's hometown worked for me. How many more times can that happen on PPV in San Antonio?
It's very challenging to make multiple "specialty matches" with similar traits different enough to maintain the fan's interest over a three hour event. With that said, I felt like each "specialty bout" had its own "moments" and unique traits to provide each with its own personality.
TLC was a fun show with some significant surprises and featured not one person phoning any thing in as everyone worked hard. If you didn't see TLC, you might want to consider catching the replay.

Hi JR.
Am not here, to ask you all these questions, that you have nothing to do with.
Am only here to pay you praise and Thank You for so many years of Fun on the broadcasting team.
I know alot a fan wish they could see there dream wrestling Matches. But mine dream, is a dream broadcasting team, 3 of the best of all Time JR, The King and Bobby Heenan. That would be the true Dream broadcasting team
My prayers for you and the Brain, No matter what the future hold, your 3 give us the best story line, you guys bring the stories to life. People could praise the wrestler on the story. But, you make it out to be a slobbler Knocker LOL.
Your script could be written or fed to you on the headset, but your translation, your action, the way you deliver the liine is outstanding.
No Knock to the other WWE or TNA teams, But They Have alot to learn. You should open a wrestling broadcasting school. You sir are a Genius in Broadcasting. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
can i just ask JR why Micheal cole and the king on RAw believe that Seamus is British or in fact irish people are british? On raw before TLC they both annouced sky sports new deal in the UK which was fine. what wasnt was the fact the state Seamus as countrymen to British people which is highly insulting to its Irish viewers. Do the presenters not know the difference in countries? It takes away from the fact of a all irish mans first world title win to be diluted by being anything to do with Britishness.
PS i hope you come back to smackdown soon no offence to current commentators intended but i really REALLY didnt appreciate how much commetators make the WWE great as the current ones in yur absence have really boring voices or make simple comments taking away from matchs quality If i watch smackdown its now on mute
Hey JR TLC was an alright PPV, seeing Sheamus win was a surrprise, seeing Undertaker retain wasn't. Glad to see he's still got the gold :P :)
P.S. do you know when you will return to SmackDown? Any updates you can let us know about? :)
Ha ha!! I just saw Dennis Miller introduce "The Show - Triple H!" after which Hunter thanked "Dennis Milburn for that great introduction."
Score 1 for The Game, 0 for Miller.
Did you see what michael cole said on raw. that proves RAW need JR. HAAAA
Just a thought for a possible mouth piece for Shelton,,,,
Tony Atlas
2 world class athletes
maybe have a "Heel" Atlas and a "Babyface" Shelton to add interest.
WWE: TLC left me with one question J.R.
Does Vince understand the importance of Monday, Jan 4th 2010?
With the talent on RAW, To me Sheamus seems like a weak champion. Not because He is not talented. I think He is. But because not enough time was given to him to develop his character on RAW.
Also I felt like the Taker/Batista was missing something..... Like maybe Rey Mysterio costing Batista the title....helping Taker and also giving more heat to Batista since the true fan never believed Batista would win in the new first match between these two. WWE should not take for granted that WE ALL were here for the first feud between these greats.
What a lot of my friends and I have been talking about was how a Christian/Sheamus and a Shelton/Cena match would have been more entertaining. All Shelton is missing is a mouth piece and Fans would Hail the return of the Ringside Manager that have made many a Legend in WWE.
I agree with J.R. The ECW title match was outstanding yet .... at the same time the ending made Shelton Benjamin look outclassed. Shelton Benjamin again DESERVES a title. I don't know how long he has on his contract, But look at him. Read up about Him. Watch his matches. If Wrestling was a Language, It would be his language BEFORE English.
Hopefully Mickie James and MIchelle McCool's feud carries over. It has been written well up to now. Only Layla needs to be dropped from the story and Mickie can have her turn embarassing Michelle McCool. The ending was a shocker since it almost looked like a handicap match that Mickie James had full control of.
Orton and Kofi Kingston. What can I say. They both Shined all the way through the match. The ending was NOT a shocker. And it was a great lead-in to TLC.
J.R. I ask of you, Why is Big Show not getting Batista's push? As an observant fan who has followed his in ring career I can not decide if it is Show's Mental ability to work a match, Or if WWE Creative are just scared He will kill somebody literally. And if Jericho doesn't win his yet ANOTHER Slammy award for Superstar of the year he is definately gets second place in my Book.
Over all it was a good show. Better booked that a lot of WWE PPV's have been in 2009.
Saved by the on screen "camaraderie" of the 3 gifted Commentators. Which we as fans beg of you J.R. to take Matt Striker under your wing....All he needs is to be more relaxed and learn more "WWE History"
I'm sure you caught on why.
Missed hearing the "Voice of WWE" Jim Ross and a Tribute to Eddie Fatu.
Thanks. for the read.
I enjoyed the TLC show it had a few surprises and should open up a few more fueds. Like you say it was a fun show.
The three man booth worked for me too, while others might not enjoy his work (not calling anybody, everyone's taste is different) I enjoy Matt Striker. I thought I caught a few Heyman-esque nuances in his work last night. Although that might be down to you mentioning Heyman in your blogs recently.
I don't know why but I always find 3 hour Raws a bit of a hard slog to make it through comapred to a 3 hour PPV. That might be down to pacing though.
Anyway I really enjoy reading your blogs and thought it was time I contributed.
Hi JR...
Just a question based on the TLC PPV. If WWE is going to be a more "family friendly" product, then shouldn't they get away from doing PPV's that are based on traditionally very violent matches like Hell in the Cell and TLC? Maybe it's time to come up with some new concepts that are more in tune with the current course of the company?
All the best,
Andy
Of course, I loved that Sheamus won; I was really expecting WWE to surprise us and not do what some saw as the inevitable outcome. I actually would have liked to see Sheamus and Cena in a regular, non-gimmick match but I was glad for it the same. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of support the crowd gave Sheamus, the cheers that could be heard during the Drew McIntyre segment in particular. I hope great things will follow in this!
I also agree that Cole, Lawler, and Striker seemed to work better together this time around. Survior Series was difficult to listen to at points.
I really liked the McIntyre/Morrison match; it was one of my favorites of the night, aside from Christian/Benjamin, but I felt there was something anti-climactic about Kofi/Orton.
I hope this isn't just a temporary thing with Sheamus, as I really think he has the potential to be an entertaining champion, in part just because people won't know what to expect. Guess we'll just have to see!
They need JR back in the broadcast booth BADLY. Matt Striker just isn't any good, and there isn't enough chemistry there between Cole and Lawler. The WWE *must* sign JR to a new deal. If he only wants to ppv's and not do Smackdown or RAW, do it. Whatever it takes to sign him. He's J F'in R and the WWE cannot afford to lose him!
I have a feeling there will be controversy with Sheamus winning the WWE Title and he will be stripped of it and it will be made vacant.
It appears that Cena maybe fell into the table and more so eliminated himself rather than Sheamus putting Cena through the table. So the controversy is, you have to loose by going through the table which Cena did but to win you have to put your opponant through the table which Sheamus may not have done if Cena fell onto the table on his own.
If this is the case I could see the vacant title being decided in a rematch at the Royal Rumble or even possibly the Rumble itself being the match to name a new champion. The two major title top contenders can then be decided at the next ppv rather than the Rumble.
It would be a nice twist if there is one and one I do not have a problem with. Sheamus still came out looking pretty good either way and it just helps him keep moving up.
