J.R.'s UFC Review Draws Mixed Feedback..

Posted in:

As a MMA fan and a customer of UFC PPVs, I recently shared a few thoughts of the Minneapolis event. These were simply my personal thoughts as a fan. Nothing more and nothing less. However, it seems that my long term association with sports entertainment with the WWE is a problem for a handful of vocal MMA devotees. I prefaced my comments that I was not an expert, but simply a fan. Apparently that wasn’t good enough for some. I loved the presentation and look forward to the upcoming Atlanta event. How I referenced B.J. Penn inaccurately can be attributed to attention to detail and writing in the middle of the night. My bad entirely. I still think 2009 is the right time for the Penn vs. St-Pierre fight. Die hards would buy the fight tomorrow, but new fans would benefit from a solid build so that they too could emotionally invest in the matchup. Any one with an ounce of common sense knows that the show biz presentation of pro wrestling knows the distinct difference between MMA and ‘rasslin. Nonetheless, after being a MMA fan since its inception and being around TV production including pro wrestling and football for many decades, a slick television production of any PPV event is an important element of any event with which big money is charged.

Most MMA fans are level headed fans of MMA and other sports but the handful of those that rip a guy because of one’s professional background are near sighted and need to get over themselves. I made a few personal observations/suggestions that I felt had merit largely as it relates to TV production. I also made it clear that I really enjoyed the show not that it seemed to matter to some. To the best of my knowledge, no MMA fan was forced to read my blog which was more intended to invite my core audience to sample MMA if they already had not. Upgraded TV production has zero to do w/ pro wrestling but everything to do with broadcasting. Sorry if I offended anyone but I am still under the impression that the 1st Amendment is still in place and one man’s opinion is just that. I like to write about things that I like including football, pop culture, and, of course Bar-B-Q, and will continue to do so. That includes MMA, which I truly enjoy as a fan...not an expert.

Hi JR,

I am a huge MMA fan, and also a long time Wrestling fan, and believe your comments about UFC 87 were absolutely bang on!!.

Being a Brit I have to watch the majority of live events via satellite/cable and feel your insight into the production of the event to be refreshing and informative.  I also felt the same things watching the UFC over the years, and feel they could do worse than take some of the advice on board, esecially as it is available free on this site!!.

I have been to a few UFC live events and they are superb, and the addition into the market of Affliction MMA  great T-shirts by the way) will start to focus the minds of all MMA promotions on the displayed product hopefully meaning a better spectacle for all viewers live or at home.

Having avidly watched the Monday Night Wars (not ECW unfortunately as Bravo showed this about 4 weeks behind in the UK) I feel the production values of the WWF/WWE were a lot higher at the time than WCW and this lended to a far slicker presentation (and obviously having the best announce team in the biz!!), and therefore a better product ( I have to also say that being a big Stone Cold fan swung it for me as well).

I also feel that anyone with half a brain reading that particular blog would understand the standpoint you were taking, but then some people are from the bottom end of the gene pool.

Keep up the great work Jim and please keep up the honest informative blogs as they are great to read.

Cheers,

Stan

Hi Jim,

I've been a big MMA and Sports Entertainment Fan for years. I remember being thrilled to see Ken Shamrock enter the WWE years and years ago.

So as a hardcore MMA fan ----I loved hearing your thought on UFC 87!! You have a wonderful unique point of view Especially when it comes to production and how to market and fighter and a fight (shoot or work).

Please continue to blog Brocks fights (or any other MMA show you watch). You are one of the personalities I admire most in the pro wrestling world and I'd love to get your thoughts on MMA more often.

Plus, in your entry, it really seems like you just had fun watching UFC 87. It brought a smile to my face as I read it.

Ignore the haters, there's plenty of MMA and WWE fans out there like myself that loved your point of view!

Oh, and thanks for years of being the voice of RAW.

Fantastic blog as always JR, and a cracking new site. I've been reading one or two of the 'dirt sheets' on the net and it annoys the hell out of me when they try to pick holes in what you write. The MMA misname was up there as a HEADLINE! I guess they are just jealous that they don't have your job ;-) Keep up the great work, and i'm looking forward to you calling the Taker v Edge Hell in a Cell match on Sunday (as it's the main event that'll be 03.30 local time). I'll just have to go into work tired again :)

JR forget those people who feel the need to nit-pick your opinions.

There is a rumor going around now about Mick Foley not re-signing with WWE next month when his contract is up. Is there any truth to that or no? There is also a rumor of him possibly going to TNA if he does not re-sign. I know he did the same thing back in '05 when his contract was running out. Is this the same type of situation or no?

Hey JR,

Great web site...I'm a fist timer to commenting on your blogs, but I have always enjoyed them nonetheless. I would like to start by saying, I really liked the MMA blog following the Lesnar fight, and those same MMA diehards that tried to rip you (what a joke by the way) were surely the same intelligent bunch that tried to write Brock off after his first disappointment though briefly dominating Frank Mir...So I would encourage an icon such as yourself to just brush nonsense like that off...

I would also like to say that I watched 2 old NWA/WCW PPVs today. Great American Bash 1989 and Starrcade 1993, my overwhelming thought is that the second product seemed naked without the voice of JR...Though Wrestlemania 9 really benefitted from your involvement. I thought you should know, that like everyone else that has ever heard you call a match, I recognize you as being the best, no contest, any major sporting arena!!!

The third issue I would like to talk about is the turn to PG programming recently made by WWE. I wish I knew your thoughts, and also, why not just put John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Khali, and all other gimmicks targeted at people under the age of 10 onto one show, and go with something more edgy on another. I.E. The video released by Domino online as a possible gimmick would have been great for ECW as, like you've stated, they need to be different...That would classify as fresh and different in my humble opinion. I just think that WWE eventually crushed WCW with Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock in what was nearly rated R programming!!! That may not be what marketers want to hear, but you know that is what is going to beat Monday Night football, not John Cena's lame attempt at being a watered down ripoff of the combination of Austin and Rock. I guess I'm simply referring to the complete lack of direction of the CM Punk gimmick, and a lot of other cartoony aspects that Vince likes to get involved in...The Dark Knight maybe the greatest sensation in pop culture today, and it was edgy and dark...not bubble gum and roses! Just look at the Heath Ledger character.

Final thought, I look foard to your next blog, hope you get a chance to read my coments, like yours they are only opinions. You're the Best

Hi JR!

Just wanted to say thanks again for the autograph you sent in the post to me. It's a privilege to have, as you are the best in your field!

Love the new look of the site. Makes me want to try some good ol' barbecue!! Rarely get the weather for BBQs in the UK but I like the sound of that Beef Jerky in your store.

Keep up the good work JR and thank you.

JR, keep telling it like it is and don't worry about those who have nothing better to do than create a verbal riot.

I've enjoyed your blog no matter what the topic at hand and I look forward to your comments on the next MMA event you happen to catch. -CoN (NYC)

Eh, I got raked over the coals too by the peanut gallery for my comments from the fight that I was present at.  Opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one.  If you don't like mine, write your own.  It's called Freedom of Speech...maybe you've heard of it.

Thanks as always for your thoughts JR, it's a shame that there are folks can't enjoy them without jumping to conclusions with all sorts of accusations. I guess sometimes having a lot of passion can be a bad thing when we take things to heart.

I know you're a big wrestling and football fan but I was wondering what your thoughts were on Oklahoma City getting an NBA team? So far a lot of the focus has been on Seattle's plight and rightfully so but with the move official it's great news for hoops fans in OKC.

Keep up the great work on WWE television, no matter which brand you may represent or whom your partner might be, for me your voice will always be synonymous with professional wrestling.

J.R,

Hey man you're a fan who cares if you review a UFC PPV regular people write about stuff they are fans of all the time
