Mail Bag Clean-Up...Emails That Didn't make the Cut...Buy Some Sauce & Beef Jerky Today

Posted in:

I thought I would do some general house cleaning with this blog to address a gambit of topics that did not make the "cut" or to underscore some topics that either have been addressed or that I am not going to provide feedback. This one covers a fair amount of ground.

I know that the UFC doesn't appoint referees for their fights but their group certainly influences the direction that the MMA world is taking. My point was simply that the officiating in the MMA world needs to be uniform in its training methods and in how the Ref's are sanctioned and assigned to better avoid any officiating issues that detract from the growth of the product. I know that many MMA purists would rather I not comment on "their sport" but I am a fan, I spend my $$$ on PPV's, and this is my blog so I feel I can comment if I choose but those that it offends don't have to read it.

Vaseline or not GSP wasn't losing to the talented B.J. Penn at the last UFC PPV. However, the Vaseline issue may be the catalyst for a rematch. GSP's size advantage will always be there nonetheless.

Made a mistake about the upcoming Fresno taping on Tuesday as we only do ONE show there which is almost like a day off. Portland is a doubleheader the Tuesday after the No Way Out PPV and doubleheaders seem to be the norm every other Tuesday until after Wrestlemania when the ECW/SD dual tapings resume in, I think, Austin, Texas.

Lots of speculation out there in the internet world about Trish Stratus wrestling Beth Phoenix at WM25 including an interview that the lovely, Canadian lass made a few days ago. Personally, I have zero knowledge of such a match but would love to see Trish at WM25 or any other time for that matter even though it would seem the Raw announcers would get to call that match. I can only suggest to stay tuned to Monday Night Raw as I do for any new developments. As a fan, it feels like a good pairing (no pun intended) if it ends up going that way.

We touted the Starrcade DVD in an honest and straight forward way when I received the rough cut of the DVD and now Starrcade is the #1 seller on DVD charts. One can really tell the amount of quality, main event depth back in Starrcade's hey day and the lack of said depth is something we bemoan here perhaps too much.

Things we aren't going to discuss on our Q&A section so please refrain from writing them include: Politics (What's your thoughts on George W.?), Religion (no questions about religion will ever be answered on this site), people asking me to gut and quarter the WWE creative team (I have to work with these people and whether I agree with their ideas or not is irrelevant because they have a thankless job I would never want), what's my favorite any thing as it relates to wrestling, who the "next big star will be" type questions (How can anyone answer that one accurately?), and questions about the personal lives of talents especially those that are married from people who simply crave "the dirt."

Why don't we carry PPV's at JR's Family BBQ locations any longer? Simple...free loading fans monopolized multiple tables while ordering nothing but free refills on beverages and MAYBE an appetizer while our other guests who did not care about seeing a WWE PPV had to wait longer to get a table to have their dinner. Many of them ended up leaving because of the long waits. We tried it but a small group of fans ruined it for the rest.

Someone asked if I was angry that I am not inducting Stone Cold into the WWE HOF and is that why I changed hats? WOW!! Uh, no the HOF is about Steve not me, Al Frankin, and I had my current hat custom made in OKC. I still have both of the hats Stone Cold presented me and for the record they are not for sale but may find their way into a JR's BBQ some day.

All of the sudden there is all this talk about whether or not the WWE will have a Diva in Playboy prior to Wrestlemania. First of all, I do not know. I do seriously doubt it,  however. I am more interested in the WM25 card than I am about who may be "tastefully nude" in Playboy Magazine.

Enough of the emails on how much some "HATE" the fact that the WWE is now rated PG. First of all, hate is a strong word to use and unfortunately it is used to much in our society today. Think about this for a second. The WWE has pulled back on some elements of their content to make it more family friendly but many aspects of the shows will still remain edgy. Nonetheless we are still talking about a TV show here and if a viewer "hates" a TV show SO much because of what they perceive to be philosophical changes then why doesn't one simply eliminate the anguish and watch something else on the tube? No, I don't want any wrestling show to lose viewers but there is no reason to watch any thing on television and then bitch and moan about it every week. Or am I missing something?

Will JR's BBQ ever have a location in my town? Please don't ask these questions again. Our plan is to build and own stores in Oklahoma where we can closely monitor and manage them because our management group is based here. We want to FRANCHISE stores elsewhere which means that other individuals put up there money and own and operate a JR's BBQ Restaurant themselves just as if one were to buy a McDonald's or a KFC franchise. So, I DON'T KNOW if any JR's BBQ'S will ever be in a particular city outside of Oklahoma as we haven't started franchising then yet. I hope they are eventually every where. Whew.

How did I like working with Jesse Ventura? The answer is,  fine. I am sure I wasn't his favorite guy to work with nor was he mine but Jesse was extremely bright and witty and certainly understood the wrestling business. The Body never lacked for an opinion and had a gift for being controversial. He was never a big preparation freak but neither is Jerry Lawler who is still at his post on the WWE's #1 TV show. I wish I had Ventura's representation when I was at WCW and when Jesse got his "big money" with a very limited schedule but that was my fault and,  hand it to Ventura, he always seemed to do well in the money department.

Will the WWE ever promote a Scaffold Match? Hard to say as only a few athletes should even be considered for such a dangerous match. I won't say "no" but I will say "doubtful" until proven otherwise. The types of talents that flourish in ladder matches would be the #1 candidates to compete in a Scaffold Match. I've seen some exciting Scaffold Matches but I've also seen some stinkers in my day.

Oh, yeah....please keep your emails succinct ala the shorter the better. I unfortunately do not have the time to read the long emails no matter how well worded they may be. It's just the webmaster and me on this project and my schedule is much more hectic than most folks think.

Strike Force's TV deal with CBS/Showtime is big for them and gets that new group seriously in the hunt as far as MMA is concerned. They still have to produce  compelling fights and create new stars to make it work but clearing a network slot is big. Many new viewers who have heard of MMA in various forms still haven't established their brand loyalty but without question the UFC is still the big dog in the hunt with the best group of fighters. Why a TV network doesn't scoop in and work a deal out with UFC to supplement their Spike TV cable deal surprises me especially with the network's needing programming that doesn't cost them an arm and a leg to produce.

I got some emails from fans who were disappointed in the fact that there will likely be no more man on woman "violence" in the WWE. That particular consternation amazes me. Perpetuating this sort of thing has never been admirable in my view and what does it teach impressionable, young viewers?  Domestic abuse is horrific in this society and portraying it on TV for "entertainment purposes" is hypocritical. I think the WWE has definitely made the right call on this matter if indeed the male on female aggression is history.

And no, I was not a fan of Chyna winning the IC Title back in the day either. I know I am a dinosaur and way old school but that development never tripped my trigger.

The F-Bomb laden emails we receive get erased without being read. So for those who feel compelled to travel that road please know you are traveling it alone.

For the record, some fans, according to their emails,  think I have become senile but I chose to stand on the belief that I have "selective memory." IE, sorry honey but I forgot to mow the lawn, etc.

Others want to know if I am competitive with the other announcers, who are all my friends by the way, and the answer is hell, yes. I love it when all 3 announce teams work a PPV as I want Tazz and my work to stand out as being better than the rest. I plan on 2009 being my best broadcast year in the business because none of us can take the future for granted and I sure as hell don't know when this amazing ride that I have been on will end for any number of reasons.

Finally, I have received some emails from fans who are miffed that their email hasn't been answered. Sorry to PO any one but I get to as many emails as possible however if I come across one that's too long, out of bounds, or specifically DATED and we are past the expiration date as in one on a milk carton , they won't be answered.

Thanks for checking out the site and I hope this continues to help expedite your emails and that you continue to send us your succinctly written questions remembering that usually one or two, max, questions will be addressed due to time restrictions.

Now... I would greatly appreciate if you would do some shopping in our store. JR's needs a little economic stimulus too!

I appreciate WWE finally having a PPV in Seattle for the first time since Wrestlemania XIX. The elimination chamber matches made going worth every cent, and I hope that the WWE returns to Seattle for a PPV in the future, as I know the show was sold out and I'm sure the city liked having all that money

Let me first begin by saying that it's always a pleasure to read your blog, and that I'm always very interested in what you have to say.

That having been said, one of your comments regarding WWE's programming caught my attention in particular:

I got some emails from fans who were disappointed in the fact that there will likely be no more man on woman "violence" in the WWE. ... Perpetuating this sort of thing has never been admirable in my view and what does it teach impressionable, young viewers? Domestic abuse is horrific in this society and portraying it on TV for "entertainment purposes" is hypocritical.

You certainly raise a very good point about this, but it seems very strange that this is the specific point considered "unacceptable."

For instance, if a wrestler comes charging down the ramp with a steel chair in hand and cracks someone across the back with it, that is a simulation of assault with a deadly weapon. Does it mean that WWE is advocating assault? Of course not. They're using an effective dramatic tool to advance the storyline and flesh out the characters.

You know as well as anyone that WWE has been fighting against parents for far too long that have claimed that its programming advocates drug use, profanity, and sexual themes. None of these accusations are true OR fair, so what's the difference in this particular case? No one in their right mind would EVER say that a man attacking a woman was justified. But unless your name begins with "Steve" and ends with "Austin," your character is probably doing something like that to get over as a heel, anyway. And what is a heel if not someone that takes the easy way out and does bad things? If you're going to stop wrestlers from doing bad things on TV, you might as well scrap all of the storylines and bring back WWF Jakked.

Just some food for thought. Thanks for hearing me out!

It's amazing how many people still don't seem to get it.  This is JR's blog.  Not a WWE blog.  If you don't like what the WWE is showing, complain to the WWE, not to a Bar-B-Q site.  Not to someone who can't do anything about it.

And certainly not to other WWE fans who don't care about your rants and raves about pretty much nothing.

Fe fi fo furn. I smell a JR online heel turn!

Just kidding. I love your blog. Even if the online terror squad at WWE.com always tries to remove the only way I can see Raw and Smackdown (I've long since given up on ECW). Which is Youtube, as nothing carries WWE in Holland. They're always removing WWE weeklies for 'copyright infringement', when WWE on youtube did get me back into following WWE just after WrestleMania 24. Then this past summer I ordered two t-shirts from WWEshop.com. All due to youtube. And then they're still getting deleted.

Anyway, I hope you're doing good.

I can only imagine how hectic your schedule must be so I'll try not to wast your time by rambling on, but I must say that I was very offended that you would openly alienate the fans that way. I can understand the pressures you must have. All I ask is a minute of your time.
I,like many others, have spent a lot of my time and money over the years supporting your product. I don't agree with the people who do nothing but blast certain performers they don't like. However, I do agree that they are all entitled to their opinions of the show. It''s a shame that you would just disregard your loyal fans. These are the people who are buying your DVDs and PPVs. These are the people who willingly sit in front of an arena box office overnight in the freezing cold just for the chance to get a front row ticket. I've personally camped out for over 12 hours to buy tickets, just to have my show canceled two weeks latter and I didn't just give up on being a fan. Now you're saying you don't want us to watch? Next time you decide to publicly insult a large group of people I hope you take a minute to see it from their side.

Why do you do a blog if all you seem to do is complain about every question someone asks? First of all who cares if you answer a question? Im a fan of yours, but if you dont like the questions then eliminate the Q&A section, for heaven sake.Secondly, WWE should stop treating fans like pawns on their chess board and maybe they would actually have more viewers again. People are tired of being treated like piles of crap while they try to continue to get us to spend money on their ppv's and all their other b.s. stuff. Chill out is my suggestion.Ignore the stupid questions you dont want to answer. But, you dont have to insult everybody in the process. Believe it or not, most wrestling fans actually do have brains. Despite to the belief of many.

To amethyst_krystal

I don't care if you really like my opinion.  I said in the article that it's one fans perspective.  But as soon as i sign on today there is another person with a similar opinion to me.  I don't care what you say Krystal, but i respect the fact that you say it.  That's how I feel...it doesn't mean that's how you feel.  I've been watching wrestling since the day I was born, I've been all around the country meeting wrestlers, I've been to Manias and Rumbles and house shows gallore.  That's my opinion on why a) ratings are down b) the show sucks c) people are angry.  There are different kinds of wrestling fans.  I don't know who you route for.  You may be a fan of the big guys such as Batista.  If JR doesn't read it it proves my point, that the WWE doesn't care about the people who brought them to the table.  If he does read and thinks every word I wrote is garbage, than whatever...at least I got it off my chest.  But I don't think its your job to decifer who what fans wrestling needs right now...because they can use all the fans they can get.

Hello JR,

I am a longtime follower (23 years out of 28) all things pro wrestling & sports entertainment, and I would like to respond to something you have said in your most recent blog and something that I have heard many people within Pro Wrestling say in the past -

If you do not like the WWE product - turn the channel and don't watch it and don't complain about it.

I often times HATE the product WWE puts out, especially since the beginning of 2002 - but I have never missed a single TV show or PPV in that time and I do not plan on missing any shows in the future. The reason for this is that I do have so much passion for pro wrestling and some things on all the WWE shows are well worth watching - for example, guys like the Hardys, Chris Jericho, Kendrick, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Edge and a few others are just unmissable to me. I love everything about their performances inside the squared-circle to their promos - this is why I will never miss a show -

HOWEVER I DO take the advice you have given somewhat in that whenever someone absolutely useless & annoying comes on my TV - like John Cena, Batista, Khali, JBL, Mark Henry, Mike Knox, Snitsky, Koslov and all the other no-talent wastes of space, I turn the sound down on my TV and read whatever book I'm reading at that moment, I pick my guitar up and start playing - I go to the toilet, I get myself something to eat - ANYTHING to distract myself from that rubbish.

- The problem with this, is that sometimes it's really difficult to do if say, Shawn Michaels is in a storyline or match with JBL or Cena - that means that for the sake of seeing one of the greatest performers to ever step foot in a wrestling ring, I have to see Cena or JBL - I try to look away during their offensive moves (READ: awful punches & clotheslines and well, that's about it, other than a lot of time-wasting!) and look up again when Shawn or Jericho or whoever is trying to carry them to have a good match is doing something other than selling. - It's not that I don't appreciate their selling, it's just that I'm insulted that they have to sell anything at all to guys who are so empty of any talent or any reedeeming qualities. - I'm not saying Cena is a bad person, he may be the kindest guy in the world, but he can't wrestle and he's NOT entertaining in any way shape or form and it makes me sick to watch the WWE - the most successful PW company in the world just wasting everybody's time with this when they could be promoting great talent.

Are we building to Shawn Vs JBL at Wrestlemania? WHY!!?

Shawn may not have many years left in the business and every match is valuable to me as a fan - why waste Shawn Michaels by putting him with JBL - someone who could never have a good match if his life depended on it?

I would rather see Shawn and all the other great talents that WWE has programmed with other great talents so that they can create something special.

Yes, I know Shawn Michaels could have a **** match with a broomstick, but this is JBL we are talking about here - and there is no way he could raise his game to be as good as a broomstick.

I understand children, women & gay men love Cena and buy tons of his merchandise so I understand having him on your show, as much as I hate him, but can't he just be programmed with other no-talent guys like JBL, Mark Henry, Khali etc - so that I can peacefully just ignore all those matches and segements and then look up when someone good comes on?

By mixing up the talented guys with the guys who can't do anything it doesn't seem to raise their games - it actually drags down the few talented guys that are left.

It's not as easy as "Don't watch the show if you don't like it" - as real wrestlers like Undertaker, Chris Jericho, Hardys etc are still like Heroes to me and I wouldn't miss them for anything - but if anything could make me miss watching them, then it would be the no-talent 12-year old comedy booking and the awful "sports entertainers" (Thank F, you don't call them wrestlers!).

I think you & Taz do an AWESOME job by the way - Thank you very much! I don't envy you sometimes trying to put over really stupid angles, but I respect you for always trying your best and often being the most entertaining part of the shows.

Many Thanks for reading & I wish you all the best for your restaurant and life overall.

Kind Regards,

[JohnTP35]  What is all that about? You actually believe JR is going to read all that you have written? I read all of JR's article but I'm not going to read through all of yours; it's even worse that one has to scroll down through your thoughts just to get to the other comments. I'd say that you're one fan wrestling doesn't need. BBFN (Bye Bye For Now!)

~~There ARE Floors in Heaven~~

and if you dont read and think about what i just wrote it proves every point i made..you may disagree with it, but it's how at least one wrestling fan feels.  who knows who else feels that way.

I will be visiting the JR's BBQ location in Moore tomorrow to meet you and Mr. Hodge. I am so excited to finally shake hands with you two.

My father is bringing me and it will be a treat for us both. He grew up in Muskogee and knew Mr. Hodge through family and I've been a fan of yours my whole life. I just recently began a (sideline) career in commentary and being a backstage interviewer for a wrestling federation here in Oklahoma... you are my biggest inspiration!

         JR

Read your blog everytime it comes out! It does make for very interesting reading!! and for that i thank you

I couldn't agree more with you on keeping your Q+A questions direct+ to the point instead of a bunch of Ramblings on+on+on!!

Finally F bombs   Sorry JR but my mommy+dad taught me from a very young age to have manners+respect towards the people i talk to!! but unfornunately one could only assume they don't teach children these things today!!!!!

                                                           Thank You
