Here are my observations of Monday Night Raw from seemingly docile Providence, R.I.
Stephanie McMahon will be a significant upgrade over former GM Mike Adamle. Good move for Raw.
Love the team of Miz and Morrison in an otherwise lackluster tag team scene. These 2 young talents have significant upsides.
I am intrigued as to the "deal" between JBL and HBK.
Getting Kennedy back on TV is a positive. Seeing how he is utilized until he gets healthy is a key.
Enjoyed seeing Pat Patterson utilized, hopefully, as a character could be fun.
Building focus on the IC title is a good thing, especially if it leads to Champ William Regal, a viable contender, which will help the title and the broadcast.
Batista's promo made me feel as if the Animal is losing his patience re: the World Title picture.
Santino is gold on the mic. Very entertaining.
Randy Orton's relationship w/ young male fans is noticeable. RKO has "it" equating to "presence."
Mike Knox has my interest, especially if he can deliver verbally. He's a big, young, rugged kid. Opportunity may be knocking for Knox who reminds me of a very young Bruiser Brody.
Chris Jericho is great in his role.
John Cena coming through the crowd and genuinely interacting w/ them worked. A more aggressive, more physical Cena should help John in the long haul especially w/ young male fans.
I liked Cole and Lawler's work Monday night. Their chemistry is evolving.

Definately agree on the Morrison/Miz tag team.
They definately have potential to be a great tag team.

WWE
I found the introduction of Shane and Stephanie feuding to be a great idea, but Cena's overexposure is reaching epic proportions. If he doesn't care how many titles he's won and lost, can the WWE do the true wrestling fans a favour and put the belt on someone who can use it - like Jericho, Orton, Batista, etc, all of whom had to fight between themselves to see who will be the first to job.
Cena's wrestling never impressed me - I think he's been carried in all his main events by his superior opponents. I think his "man of the people" promos are excrutiating. Couple that with almost a month long series of vignettes like he's the only superstar who's ever been injured and putting the title back on him was dull and obvious. Most people return from injury via two weeks or "So and so returns!" and then a bit of a push. Cena gets al the superstars talking about him, like the WWE are trying to justify him becoming a champion yet again. I don't buy it and never will, sorry.
I believe John Cena made the entrance that is MOST fitting right now. He needed to show that he wasn't above the working class. That he still remembers where he came from, it's ashame that there are not more entries done that way by other wrestler's. I haven't seen anyone question or comment on R-Truth's entry in a negative manner, which BTW, I think his entry is awesome. For some fun, I'd love to see John Cena and R-Truth have a Rap Session. So tight that would be....
Sure, John could draw in the older males with more testerone, but he's just gotten back from having neck surgery. I believe that he beat the time they thought he would be out of commission. Isn't that enough to put a fire under some of the demagraphic males' @sses?
Enough said, I've been a Cena Fan for a long time. I see him getting a bit more to the Hard Core side, I feel it's just going to take some time to bring that back in him.
Peace Out,
John Cena almost won me back over with how good he looked when he dismantled jericho, but that was an unbelievably lame promo. I know j.r. said he liked it but it just came off as really weak and did not help him any with the hardcore fans. I was like, "no I am not seeing this 'bad ass' up in the stands with a bunch of kids!" Not to mention he kept repeating himself.
What do the writers think they are accomplishing by making jericho look like he stands no chance againts faces like batista and cena? They just keep destroying him over and over again. I mean what's the point of even putting a title on him if he's just going to lose in his first defense each time?
and don't get me started on the jumping title. jericho's got 4, triple h has like 9 or 10. Does flairs 16 world championships mean anything anymore? Will they when you have the 28 time world heavey weight champ Triple H?
On a side note, I hope OH SO MUCH Cena doesn't ruin the WHC belt. It's perfect as is, please don't ruin it like the WWE belt was ruined and 'spinnerize' it.
I hope Edge brings his Rated R belt back on SmackDown!
I didn't watch most of RAW, as my personal form of outrage and protest to SuperCena being champ again. He looked godawful in the Survivor Series match, and is very lucky Jericho is so darn talented and carried that match.
I did watch the first bit of RAW though, up until Cena appeared. I LOVED(again, LOVED) the very intro with Shane McMahon. That was brilliant, I can't get enough of Shane, he's just an awesome guy, and that whole opening bit was classic. I wish the WWE would have more intros and stuff like that.
Hey JR
I personally think that John Morrison is going to be a huge superstar in the WWE....he reminds me of HBK but more athletic and physically talented, but what he has physically over HBK is overshadowed by his lack of personality and skills on the mic. If he was ever to harnass half of Shawn Micheals charsima and showmenship, then I would dare say Morrison could be one of the best in the business!
JR,
I know you're thrilled about OU's beatdown of Texas Tech. I've got a friend on the team, JR Bryant. I think you've talked to him before. Me & him used to love wrestling and we'd talk about it during practice. I've always enjoyed your commentary & blogs. I'd love to talk football with you some day! Now, I'm going to enjoy some jerky!
I love when you speak highly of Knox in your blogs :) I am crushed however that sexy Mike Knox isn't in the IC Tourney.
I really liked the altercation between Stephanie and Shane McMahon, it can be great for RAW, and I agree that a more aggressive Cena is much more appealing.
I forgot about the IC title tourney, I'll definately tune in next week, mainly in the hopes of seeing the tough Irishman Finlay win and have a great run with Regal. those two working together is always fun to watch.
What can be so bad in a world where so many people are smiling?-2 Gryphon/LSD#1
The "seemingly docile" crowd in R.I. made me suspicious of the spotaneous "Cena" chat that filled the dead air between Shane and Stephanie. Maybe it was only the people in my house, but it sounded eerily similar to the Goldberg chants heard (but not seen) on Nitro.
The more aggressive Cena may help with young males, but if three months away doesn't curb the overwhelming sense of overexposure, it may be too little too late. Maybe Cole doesn't need to mention him in each and every segment.
Aside from that it was a much improved Raw, especially the focus on the IC title.
Thanks JR
Given the focus on the Intercontinental Title, PLEASE find Hall Of Famer Pedro Morales wherever he and bring him back (or least do a good video package on him). He was incredible to watch as a kid. Pedro was a lot of fun to watch, and it would be great to expose him to the younger generation of fans.
(And I swear that Hulk Hogan's "Hulking-up" routine came from Pedro...)
i been watch wwe all my life jr for 17 years wrestling was everything to me until cena became main eventer my life turned hell as always shawn michaels is the ladder to the top it's been 6 years since the best wwe wrestler ever hold the championship i hate when the championship change hand like this year i love the fued between the mcmahon's i been waiting for a long time to see this i hope i can become wwe superstar soon
thanks jr
