Randy Savage...A-Rod...Christian to ECW??...Beware of the Draft...Toby Keith Can Fight.

Thanks for stopping by and visiting our website. I hope you will take a moment to stop by our store and place an order. We also appreciate your emails and we have updated the Q&A section of the site earlier today as well. There's a fair amount of ground to cover including some info on Randy Savage, A-Rod, Bret Favre, the WWE Draft and more with these random thoughts.

"Macho Madness: The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection" will be released by the WWE on June 9 and as of today the match selection process was still on going. Obviously, some of Savage's bouts are no brainers to include on this upcoming DVD including Savage vs. Steamboat from WM3 but there is so much excellent content to pick from that making a final decision on this particular DVD won't be easy. Of course this will create the obligatory and predictable concerns as to why certain matches were not included. It's obviously a conspiracy of the Oliver Stone magnitude. BTW  Macho Man would be a great candidate for the WWE Hall of Fame some day and I wonder why no one has ever suggested such in the past?  I think Matt Striker may be penciled in to host the Savage DVD....dig it?!

It seems as if I may be on A-Rod overload. Here's what I think about this matter....steroids have no place in sports or in entertainment....A-Rod is smart enough to know what he was injecting into his body....the term performance enhancing appears to be a synonym for the term ego enhancing....there, unfortunately, seems to be no fool proof drug tests currently available in America including the United States Olympic Committee's (see Marion Jones, etc.)....testing by all entities that do test should continue....Congress should truly study this matter before they start any further investigations so that they actually know of what they are speaking.....and we would all likely be shocked at the amount of steroids being used in high school and college sports in America.

Sad to see the great Brett Favre retire, for good this time it seems, from the NFL. I got to know #4 when he was with the Falcons in '92 and he is one helluva guy who is a stand up dude who's great to be around. Brett grew up in Mississippi when Mid South Wrestling was one of the highest rated, syndicated TV shows that aired weekly on local TV. Favre who always played on the edge and with swagger (no wrestling puns intended) on the gridiron used to reminiscence about the Fabulous Freebirds' exploits in Bill Watts' Mid South Wrestling territory. Luckily,  the 1st ballot NFL HOF'er never adopted a Michael Hayes/Dog the Bounty Hunter hair style while playing close to 20 years in the NFL. I wonder what network will gobble up Favre for their NFL coverage this fall. Hell,  he might be in the WWE Draft come April 13, who knows?? Now THAT would be an "Adamle", a healthy announcer contract.

My friend and country music superstar Toby Keith got in the face of an unruly fan in Kentucky recently at one of TK's concerts. Toby is a big, raw boned man who stays in great shape and it makes no sense to me for a likely drunk fan to want to tangle with Toby.  For the record, Bullet Bob Armstrong once taught Toby how to apply a suplex that the elder Armstrong said the country singer executed in "textbook fashion." Toby, who is friends with Ron and Don Harris, once did a cameo on TNA years ago and has attended many WWE events.

Some day there is going to be a tragedy in the MMA world when one of the fighters goes too far to "make weight." The hypocrisy of this matter is that the weigh in's are the day before the fight and the fighters usually put significant pounds back on before they fight the next day. GSP allegedly put back on 18 pounds from Friday's weigh in until Saturday night's UFC fight with B.J. Penn.  I know weigh in's are necessary but there needs to be some thought given to this matter on how it can be done without jeopardizing the fighter's health as drastically as it currently seems it does.

I have to admit that I was surprised to see Christian return to the WWE Tuesday night on ECW. Christian returning to the WWE at some point wasn't a big secret in many circles but Christian going to the ECW brand was. Personally,  I was hoping that "Captain Charisma" would have joined the Smackdown team.  ECW got a nice addition to their roster and because they only do one hour or 6 segments of TV weekly, the ECW show should feature solid,  in ring wrestling more weeks than not. I think fans want to see more bell to bell action and ECW seems to provide that most weeks.

Tuesday in Fresno lots of WWE talents were speculating and discussing the upcoming WWE Draft on April 13 from Atlanta when, I assume, every one and their Mom, will be required to be front and center for the annual "let's shake up the WWE night." This Raw broadcast will likely garner a healthy TV rating. After last June's night of surprises in San Antonio, any thing can happen and likely will. I am prepared for whatever unlike last year when I wasn't expecting to leave Raw. Change can often times be effective and I personally think it is a good thing to shake up the rosters and create new rivalries and issues. Plus, it is a great time to provide some young talents a nice "jump start."

No matter what happens, I can assure you that this year I will not "throw a shoe" with a post- Draft blog. Where ever I hang my black hat works for me. I like what I am doing now with Tazz but,  who knows, I could end up working again with the King or perhaps even with Matt Striker. The unpredictable thing is that only a handful of people will know going into that evening and I won't be one of them.

From what I can ascertain, there likely will not be a full,  Smackdown TV show taped in Houston during Wrestlemania Week. Friday Night Smackdown may have elements that emanate from WWE Fan Axxess, which I hear is selling well BTW, but I don't think an entire SD will be broadcast from that site. This matter may still be a work in progress but I can say that a SD TV event has not been on any calendars that I have seen.

We have received some good emails from fans lately and  I especially appreciate the succinct ones. I also request that fans refrain from using "insider" terms as quite often they are used incorrectly which does, however, provide for some accidental and inadvertent humor.

Recently I have been asked if I preferred to broadcast with a color announcer that I verbally "battled" with or not. I like for announcers to have differing opinions and for both announcers to not always be on the same page. However, when the show becomes about the announcers and the broadcaster's opinions and not about what the viewers are seeing on their TV screen then you've lost me. Color commentators with a bit of an edge and that are somewhat antagonist keep play by play guys honest and away from the dreaded, career threatening comfort zones. However, for announcers to rag on each other for two hours each week would get old in a hurry. I guess what I am trying to say is that there needs to be balance and hearing two differing opinions isn't a bad thing.

It's going to be a busy week with flying from OKC to Seattle on Saturday, broadcasting a single bout albeit the PPV Main Event at No Way Out, driving with my less than jovial "World's Angriest Announcing" partner to Portland on Monday and then handling the Tuesday night doubleheader Smackdown taping there will make me more than ready to take my Southwest Airlines flight back to OKC on Wednesday.

Thanks to those of you who checked in with us earlier in the week when tornadic activity hammered the Sooner State. My family was spared any hardship which wasn't the case for many of our fellow Oklahomans as there were several fatalities near us due to the storms.

Take care and come and see us at JR'S Family BBQ. I hope to see some of you in Seattle and Portland. Eat more "Q!"

I'm pleased to see the WWE is going to release a DVD set with Randy Savage later this year. That has been long overdue. I did watch Christian's return to the WWE (actually ECW, which is basically a WWE subsidiary anyways), when he had his ring confrontation with ECW champion Jack Swagger. As for what bouts to include on the Savage disc set, some of his most significant bouts in WCW, ICW (which I believe was his father's (Angelo Poffo) promotion, and Mid Southern (Memphis territory) would nicely round out the significant bouts he had in the WWF. I don't think he wrestled for the company when it changed to WWE. If the WWE  is looking for suggestions or ideas for what matches to include, besides the obvious Wrestlemania III classic with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, how about his wins for  the WWE World title (where he beats Ted DiBiase at Wrestlemania IV and where he defeats Ric Flair at Wrestlemania VIII, his loss to Hogan at Wrestlemania V,  his win over Tito Santana to capture the Intercontinental title, his Saturday Night's Main Event from 1987 with Bret "The Hitman" Hart in Seattle, which maybe one of the best technical matches in SNME's history,  maybe the Megapowers Meltdown from The Main Event in 1989, because of the signifigance of the match, or maybe the SummerSlam 88 match where the Megapowers (Hogan  & Savage) face Andre The Giant & Ted DiBiase, with Jesse Ventura as the special guest referee. These are just a few suggestions. Of course his most significant matches in the other promotions he worked would nicely round out the set if you want a complete overview of his career. Interviews with his friends, opponents and family  (i.e. his brother Lanny Poffo and father Angelo Poffo, if he is still alive) as well as himself would nicely round out the set. It would be cool to acknowledge when Savage was a  MLB baseball prospect. As for his rap career and his affiliation with Slim Jim, that probably could be ignored.

JR,

Not a comment at all to be honest, just got to thinking about the past.  I was introduced to wrestling in Pacific Northwest where I lived,  my father worked in pressroom for Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He would go to  a local bar where many of the wrestlers would go after matches, they would tell bartender turn it over am going to do my spot.

Next thing guy was screaming he was going to finish off his opponent on TV, then was back to bar to finish planning a get together with his "opponent" who was standing there at bar.

My dad taught me there was NOTHING fake about wrestling, it was a show and exciting to watch. BUT with 1 wrong move you could be seriously injured, so he always cautioned us against trying stuff we saw on TV..

I met several of the wrestlers, but being 3-4 years of age at time don't recall them or their names. My dad used to get tickets from the wrestlers, until as he put it got too dangerous to attend.

He said one match he went to had a nickel coke night promotion, lady jumped up on chair chugged her coke and bashed a wrestler in head as he went by.  Another time he said lady was sassing the heel as he went by, she whacked him with her purse knocked him out cold.

Dad said she was hitting everybody she could, when got her subdued and opened purse she had an iron stove lid in there. He said after those 2 incidents was just a little too nutty for him.  We were too young to go and so never went. I did go with my mother when we lived in Colorado, was Southwest Championship Wrestling territory at that time. Dick Murdoch, Ricky Romero, Blackjack Mulligan and a bunch of others.

I first saw you on Bill Watts' program, which was carried by a Colorado Springs station.  I enjoyed your interviews and despite fact had been living next door to a diehard Longhorns fan (even had a satellite dish (giant ones) to catch all the games) loved Steve Dr Death Williams, knew he was a heel but was so personable hard to hate him.

I must admit don't catch you too much on smackdown, Raw is easier to see starts later on USA. Wish you back over there, enjoy both announce teams equally. But not seeing you sitting next to Jerry Lawler just seems strange.

Will admit I get fooled sometimes, for longest time thought Lawler-Kaufman feud was real, until 1 night heard Jerry Lawler talking about how it was all a put on they buds and cooke dwhole thing up.

Well will let you go JR will be heading up to National Cowboy Museum in coming months, so will have to stop by and try some of your BBQ.

Thanks for your time

In an addendum to my last post, I was about to chastise WWE for their past portrayal of ECW as barely a notch or two above defunct shows like Heat or Velocity, but I'm hopeful that the addition of Christian is a step in further legitimizing the brand.  If ECW had more stars of his caliber, then I would be more tempted to watch it (although my nights are busy during the time slot).

JR,

Speaking as a wrestling fan, I found Christian's redebut disappointing.  We all knew he was coming back, but I think most of us wanted to see him unveiled as Jeff Hardy's current antagonist.  Given Christian's longtime history with the Hardys and Edge, and the general concensus of many that Christian should have been in the main event picture prior to his departure from WWE, SmackDown seemed like a no brainer.  A live RAW debut explaining his 'actions' would have been great, as SmackDown tapings certainly do not bode well for surprise debuts.

Of course, that's all wishful thinking, as we cannot change the reality of that dastardly Matt Hardy being the real culprit.  Why Matt, why?

This is not my holier-than-thou opportunity to be a wrestling pundit and trash ECW, but seeing Christian on a mission to win the ECW title, well, a fan like me can only suspend his disbelief so much.  Going from former NWA champion to ECW contender seems more of a step down than a lateral movement.  I like it when ECW is used to give up-and-coming talent some exposure to TV time... it worked well with Punk and Morrison, and I hope it does the same for Swagger.  Similarly, I hope Christian's addition at least gives ECW a jolt of credibility, and I'm sure the roster will benefit greatly from his experience.

JR,

I totally agree about insider comments. Too many websites have jibronies posting and making themselves look like a bunch of mizarks. I am not sure about Favre's retirement. Is it a shoot? A work? A swerve? personally, I wish he would just go

If the fighter is able to make weight on the day within the alotted time given to him, then I see no problem. The comissions are eyeful on fighter health and the fighters have to be medically cleared beforehand.

If a fighter is unable to make the weight, and it looks like he is endangering himself, a comission appointed doctor will prevent him from fighting. For example on the last season of The Ultimate Fighter, Jason Guida began cramping badly when he couldn't make weight for his fight, and the doctor called his fight off.

As for someone's suggestion of open weight fights, that negates the reason why weight classes were introduced to level the playing field. There are weight classes in boxing and amateur wrestling for these reasons also, although the disparity between the weight classes is less then in MMA (however the abundance of weight classes ends up diluting a sport and taking away meaning from championships)

When it comes to MMA, Japan is a law unto itself which is why there are so many mismatches in both skill and size, and since steroids and performance enhancing drugs are neither banned nor illegal in Japan, some fighters choose every advantage available to them.

OoooooHHHHH YEAH!

I cannot wait to purchase the Randy Savage DVD, I hope its going to have a documentary on it & not just matches by itself. I also hope that WWE does not forget his last run in WCW in 1999 when he reinvnted himself as a Pimp!

hey jr i think when the draft comes your be going back to raw michael cole is going to ecw in todd gisham is going to smackdown.

Hey JR,

I Love the WWE, and I have always been into Public Speaking and Journalism! Does the WWE require a degree to be considered for employment for on air talent?  I am a college student and I just want to figure out how to get started on my dream!!

Dear J.R.:

Is it really true that Vince hates Savage?

I have two words for finally getting a Savage DVD.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

JR, I think that Christian was heading for Smackdown - until Matt Hardy turned on his brother. I knew like many that Christian was WWE bound, and I was actually one of the few who didn't think Edge was guilty of the hit and run and the pyro - and the stairwell thing before Survivor Series. I speculated from the start it was Christian. Obviously I was wrong!

On the Randy Savage DVD, along with the WM3 epic against the Dragon, one can't go past the retirement match at WM7 against the Warrior. They also had a great match at Summerslam 1992, and if it hadn't been for the British Bulldog/Bret Hart match that would have been the match of the night. Savage/Flair at WM8 would also rate.

Just my take on it. I agree on the Hall of Fame, but I think I know why he hasn't been suggested - and I'll leave that there.

With all the 70's references Matt Striker comes up with on occasion you'd probably feel at home with him! It's okay - I'm a 70's person as well!

Hello Jim,

Glad to see that the WWE is finally making a Randy Savage dvd! Any word on if he will be hosting it? And it seems like he wasn''t included in the Legends of Wrestlemania game, any word if he will appear as Downloadable Content or as an unlockable?

Thanks,

Steven S

It's difficult to make weighing fair in any combat sport. The weigh-ins are actually held the day before the fight FOR health reasons. Otherwise, fighters would try to dehydrate themselves the day of the fight, which would lead to more KOs and health problems. Fighters who are really 20 lbs above their stated weight like Rich Franklin and GSP are just part of the game.

It's a shame the UFC isn't more like Japanese promotions. They don't care nearly as much about weight, and have fighters from different weight classes fighting each other all the time. I think that'd cut down on the insane weight cutting some fighters do.

The Ric Flair segment was perfect, I was really glad that Ric made it clear he would never wrestle again. I was just sad that there wasn't more done with videos backstage. I thought there could've been some really cool and emotional moments with HHH and others. I guess in the future, since it seems like Ric is sticking around for awhile.

i can't wait for savage dvd and it was smart that christian didn't return in royal rumble cuz it will not be surprise good for ecw to have i like the 2005 draft way it's much better i hope wrestlemania and the draft make major change good luck to hbk in that

So no feature? No story? No biography? Just matches?
