Raw Thoughts and the "Nature Boy"..

Posted in:

I have to admit that I multi tasked Monday night with my TV viewing sharing time between Raw and the Cowboys-Eagles NFL game.

I DVRed Raw and here are some observations:

Jericho-Punk had a really solid opening, cage match. Both men bring something special to the table. Nice chemistry between 2 athletic talents.

Nice to see Santino Marella, an entertaining antagonist, get to sit at the “grown up” table in a key interview segment.

William Regal pairing w/Layla should earn the underrated Regal more TV time.

Evan Bourne is a rapidly rising star. He’s quickly growing past the “side kick” role. Best shooting star press I’ve ever seen from this young star.

For the record, unlike the NFL’s Chris Cooley, I am writing this blog fully clothed. :)

HBK vs. Jericho for the World’s Title in a Ladder Match at No Mercy should be excellent. A show stealer?

Charlie Haas impersonation of yours truly got Charlie noticed again, which was the point. No worries here as that road has been traveled before. Upside here was that our Bar-B-Q biz got a Mamajuana-like TV mention. Perhaps I need to go on Lawler’s no carb diet after seeing Charlie’s “drum.”

Yours truly has been honored to have been chosen to write the foreword for Mike Chapman’s new book on the great Danny Hodge. I’m reading the manuscript this week.

My blurb on Steve Austin certainly got people talking about Steve returning to ring for “one more match.” To the best of my knowledge, Steve has no intention of returning to the ring, but is working out like a warrior to prepare for his upcoming movie role. Austin does seem like a leading candidate to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 in Houston.

I received 2 great voice mails from Ric Flair Tuesday while I was in route from OKC-Nashville. Ric sounded great, upbeat and busy. His recent controversy seems to have two distinctly different stories. Ric is in the process of recording a DVD interview that he seems excited about. This one should contain some interesting “road stories” and career highlights and lowlights. It was great hearing from Ric who is following his friend Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Game****s and also keeps up with another friend Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma Sooners.

Tuesday night, Friday Night Smackdown will be taped in Nashville. I am anxious to see what this No Mercy themed broadcast entails. Hopefully, more wrestling than not. Personally, I would like to see all wrestling TV shows invest more time bell to bell.

How did the King escape Raw in his hometown w/o a calamity? Oh, yeah I guess “Jim Haas” was King’s surrogate. :)

It’s been a long time since so many young wrestlers have received TV time. That’s essentially a good thing and puts the onus on the youth of the WWE to step up and accept the responsibility that goes with the territory.

All is good here and thanks for checking out our site. Please do some shopping if you have the time and inclination. We sure appreciate your support.

Hey Jim, I have a question. I remember a blog you posted recently, condemning those on the Internet who chose to make light of former WWE and ECW star, Justin Credible, working at an Olive Garden.

I am a proud subscriber to WWE 24/7. I've got Royal Rumble '92 queued up on my TV right now. I have also watched the most recent roundtable featuring Ric Flair about stables/factions in pro wrestling. During this episode, Flair makes fun of Shane Douglas' post-wrestling life, jabbing him for working at a Wal-Mart. He actually was a manager at Target, but the idea is still there. I've heard rumblings that he is an 8th grade history teacher now, but only those who know Shane know that for sure .

What I want to know is do you think Flair's comments are just as out of line as the jokes being made about Credible? I know Douglas made it a point to rip on Flair a lot during his ECW days, but they were both very professional with each other in WCW when they worked together in 2000. Anything Douglas said about Flair (at least on TV) seemed nothing more than business to me.

Do you excuse Flair's jokes about Shane's post-wrestling life because of the previous comments or is it just as unacceptable to you?

 Hey J.R.

You mentioned just about every other segment of RAW, what do think of the Rey Mysterio/Kane story?

1st I wanna say JR you are the top wrestling announcer of all time, at least since I started watching wrestling in 1984. That said I'd like to comment on the growing trend of forgetfulness experienced by WWE commentators, specifically in regards to the shooting star press. I keep hearing on ECW and/or RAW that Evan Bourne's SSP is the best move they've ever seen, nothing they've ever seen before, etc, etc. Do I need to remind these folks that one Paul London was performing this same exact move YEARS before Evan Bourne was in WWE and he was banned by WWE from performing it for some reason? Not only that but Paul London can do it better. And did they forget Billy Kidman's SSP? How about when Kidman did an SSP and knocked out Chavo Guerrero with a well placed knee to the head? JR please do something to refresh the memories of people like Michael Cole, Matt Striker and Jerry Lawler (Don't worry about Todd Grisham, he's not important). Thanks.

I cant wait for HBK vs Jericho!!!

Hi JR!

I'm looking forward to the Ladder Match, that sure will be a strong Match Of The Year candidate!

I don't like CM Punk very much, but I'll admit that I really enjoyed his steel cage match Vs Y2J!

I really think that it was a mistake to have another Jericho-Michaels match so soon.  They should have saved that rematch for WrestleMania.  Granted, they may do that anyway, but if so they are taking something out of the feud by having it happen again so quickly.

 I sorta agree

Hi J.R.~

I forgot to let ya know, it looks as if after Oct 3, we won't be able to see SD, which has me and hubby all upset!

Comcast Cable here in Provo,UT doesn't seem to want to add the new station.  I am on a mission to hound Comcast to bring the channel into their lineup. (Anybody around Utah, I could use some help!)

Hi, J.R.!

I just wanted to say that when  "Jim Haas" came out last night, I did not have my contacts in, and I thought it was you till I got 'within range'.

I want to see Charlie spoof Taker.....that will NOT be pretty! Probably won't happen because of SD and he's on RAW, but I think it would be 'hellacious'.

I was relived to see it was Charlie, and not you. If you'd gotten hurt, I'd just have to come down there and kick some be-hinds!  Nobody hurts my Black Hatted Buddy!

I wasn't sur if you would take it favorably, but as you say, ya got some advertizing out of it!

Love ya!

Blessings~
