RAW Thoughts...Montreal Bound...Don't Count Out OU
Tue, 09/08/2009 - 12:00pm — J.R.
Still in Chicago but heading to Rockford soon w/ ace driver Todd Grisham for the Smackdown taping. BBQ'ed Random Thoughts.....
I enjoyed Raw. Bob Barker, in his 80's, did a stellar job hosting Raw. A true pro in a unique environment came thru. Bob proved AARP members can still get the job done.
Great work by WWE HOF'er Howard Finkel, too. Johnny Olson & Rod Roddy have nothing on the Fink who was cast perfect in his role Monday night. Great to hear Fink's voice on TV.
Jericho vs MVP was an excellent outing. Hopefully, their bout will add more interest to Sunday's PPV. Jericho is truly gifted. Y2J's interaction w/ Bob Barker was damn good stuff.
Anxious to get to Montreal Sunday after attending Saturday night's OU-Idaho State game. Montreal has a great wrestling heritage & I'm not referring to the '97 Survivor Series.
What "Breaking Point" bout will be the show stealer? Beats me as I write this.
The Price is Raw concept was clever but did it overshadow the selling of what is likely to be one of the more unique PPV's of '09?
Has any got any info on whether the Undertaker has ever submitted in his WWE tenure? I can't recall it.
The Anaconda Vice vs the Devil's Gate seems to be the story in the 'Taker-Punk title tilt. Yes, I'm familiar with the "Vice."
Anxious to know the rules of the Kane-Khali Singapore Cane match. Cane on a pole, perhaps? I'm just saying..or asking.
Will Batista announce his retirement Monday in Toronto? I hope not...I think not...but he could. Big Dave has had to battle thru numerous injuries. When is enough..enough?
I've never seen a Falls Count Anywhere Submission Match such as we'll see Sunday when DX vs Legacy meet. Could we be in line for a "Tupelo Concession Stand" classic.
Listen to my Wednesday radio appearances..3:30 pm on KREF am 1400...www.1560thegame.com @ 5 pm both central time. Both do the streaming audio thing on the 'net.
Thanks for shopping in our store. Sauce & ketchup biz is good. Jerky sales are booming!
Finally, don't count out my Sooners. The Big 12 schedule is still a few weeks away and we'll get better. We can't play much worse in many phases of the game than we did in the loss to BYU.
Be well.
BOOMER SOONER!
JR
I felt that Bob Barker did a fantastic job as guest host and his interactions with Jericho and Santino were priceless. However the rest of the show (i.e the wrestling) was very lacklustre in my opinion and this is the problem with Raw at the moment. Why cant we have a good 20 minute US title match on Raw every now and then like we get week in, week out with smackdown. The fact that guys like Kofi Kingston, Primo, The Miz and Jack Swagger are being left off shows and PPV's absolutely baffles me as they are outstanding workers and relatively over.
Smackdown (and ECW) at the moment are just streets ahead of Raw in every single department. Every single feud is furthered on a weekly basis, the commentary is awesome and the wrestling and promos that are being delivered are top notch.
I really want to enjoy Raw as much as I enjoy the other shows but at the moment, I just can't.
Undertaker also did tap to Ken Shamrock. Although it wasn't during the match. It was back during Taker's Ministry Days.
Much to my surprise, I think Bob Barker was my favorite guest host. When I heard he was going to be the guest host, my reaction was "Whaaaaaaat?" But from the moment he stepped out on the stage, I was entertained. And his work with Jericho was brilliant - he was the old guy that's seen it all and nothing Chris said or did was going to ruffle his feathers.
The Jericho/MVP feud is a great example of how a vet can make a newer guy - at least for me. I've never been an MVP fan before, but seeing him go with Jericho in better and better matches week after week has made me a fan.
Slight modification: I guess I meant "Submissions count anywhere."
I'm a little confused by the idea of falls-count-anywhere/submission. I think most of the submission matches I've seen are falls-count-anywhere, at least I can't recall seeing a submission match end in a count out (though I can picture a ref counting and someone beating the count, still seems goofy for some reason). What were the details of the Rock vs. Mankind match that ended with the pre-recorded "I quit"?
Yeah Taker did tap to Kurt Angle once on Smackdown, but the match was thrown out because he tapped the same time he pinned Angle.
I really hope Batista does'nt retire because in my opinion he still has some good years in him. He needs a good run as WWE champion and maybe a heel turn would not be a bad thing for the Animal.
Well as you always say when a WWE performer goes down, a spot has to be filled at OU and just who wants to step up?
The "Memphis concession stand" showdown, now that is a great memory of some priceless booking...I miss that ol Mid-Southern area, not as much as the Mid-South of course, but hell I miss all the territories!
Once again, it pains me to disagree with the man I respect most in this business, but monday's Raw was complete manure. If the WWE has such intense desire to sell to nothing but children, I'm not sure why I'm sticking around. Smackdown is now so much better, it's incalculable. Not to mention, the great JR himself...I think it's time to seek out ROH and other indies, and remind myself what great wrestling can look like.
Hey Jr i am so tired of seeing Randy Orton and HHH wrestle over the WWE championship why dont they ever push someone else you guys got a lot talent that could make the ratings go through the roof! The WWE is so boring and to predictable now, I cant even watch it because of that i have to skip a few weeks and hope that i get surprised when i do watch it again, but most of the time i anit surprised but rather dissapointed. And go play some college football (GO SOONERS!) on the playstation till Wrestling goes off seems like beating the snot out some ramdon football team helps me get over the depressing show called RAW. But i like Smack Down though mainly because i dont see Triple HHH or Randy Orton or John Cena on there and i dont get to watch it all the time, so i enjoy it. But if it make Vince happy i cant stand TNA. they got some good talent there to ut they keep ramming all the old rejects down the peoples throat.
And as for the Sooners go Bradfords not the whole team, I got plenty of hope for the new freshman quarterback, Stoops picked him for a reason he make a good showing, Im headed to the game next weekend with some of the Cherokee Nation foster care kids. And some of the other programs that take care of Cherokee Nation teens and youth. Man maybe we will see ya there.
BOOMER SOONER! And go YellowJackets! Class of 91!
There was a Smackdown episode where Kurt Angle has The Undertaker in the triangle choke, and Taker has Angle pinned at the same time. Right when the referee's hand goes for the 3 count, Taker taps out at the same time. I think that's the only time The Undertaker has ever "tapped". Has he ever submitted, I believe not.
