Raw Thoughts and more....
I enjoyed Raw Monday night. Any three hour broadcast, no matter the genre, challenges me personally to stay focused and this show was no different. I'm writing this feedback tonight w/o notes and going from simply what stuck with me.
Jesse Ventura did an excellent job as guest general manager and Verne Troyer will have a helluva time following the Governor. Let's hope Ol Verne stays away from any adult beverages prior to going on live as some of his TMZ moments have been classic along with other reality TV moments. Doing live TV makes things like this interesting as one truly works without a net. Plus, Verne is quite the lady's man from what I read...not that's a crime. Diva's beware except of course the Bellas.
Jesse looked good, had his usual distinctive, great delivery and, for me, created an interest in checking out his new "Conspiracy Theory" program that debuts soon on truTV.
Ventura and McMahon was a fun trip down memory lane and they were, perhaps, the 2nd best broadcast team to appear on Monday Night Raw in a good while as in the summer of '08. Just one man's totally biased opinion. I would have been happy to have flown in and produced the two wrestling legends.
Kofi Kingston's star continues to rise. Upcoming stars, especially fan favorites, have to encounter adversities and be provided the opportunity to over come those challenges. Kofi did not win the Battle Royal Monday night but I thought he continued to be elevated. Kofi Kingston is the hottest young star in WWE as I write this.
The overall theme of the show was good. One can always debate creative and I am not immune to such Monday morning quarterbacking either but the WWE's theory of openly beginning to elevate younger wrestlers is refreshing. The exact methods that these young talents are being elevated will, as I said, continually be under each individual fan's creative scrutiny but one would have a hard time convincing me that creating new stars is any thing but essential.
C.M. Punk is a star in my eyes even though I feel his "message," which I think is on the right course, needs to be delivered in different ways. Punk also needs a personal issue in which to be involved, perhaps R Truth, but that wasn't mentioned Monday night that I heard.
Nonetheless I liked the match between Cena and Punk and felt that the two, hard working guys have chemistry.
I loved that Batista decided that discretion is the better part of valor as many great antagonists have done for years. Winning all one's fights and being a large badass doesn't make one a wrestling villain. What Batista did Monday night when confronted by Kane does. Plus, we now have the opportunity to anticipate the Batista-Kane match on Friday Night Smackdown if we choose.
It would surprise me to see Rey Mysterio back any time soon meaning sometime in 2010 but that's not "official" so don't take it as such. Just my take on Rey's banged up body that needs medical attention.
Better selling of the history of TLC seemed to be lacking. If new fans see some of those infamous, TLC moments they might decide to buy the next PPV which is only three weeks away.
Sheamus has found himself in a great spot to help begin building his long term foundation in WWE. I read where some pundits felt the incident between the young Irishman and John Cena was "flat." I disagree. Obviously, the crowd sitting in their seats over three hours is challenging, has an influence but isn't the real reason. However, let's all remember that Sheamus hasn't been on Raw in any significant role for, what, a month, 5 weeks? Sheamus has not even been in a long term personal issue with a main event, Raw wrestler yet...until now. Bottom line is that Sheamus' persona is still evolving and the next two weeks and then TLC is highly important to Sheamus' development. At worst, the WWE has made a new, fresh main event for a PPV and from where I sit that is a good thing.
I'm anxious to see the physical Sheamus wrestle the physical Cena in San Antonio in 3 weeks. It's new and fresh and those are two traits of which we need more.
The balance of the week needs lots of Raw promotion on ECW, WWE Superstars and Friday night Smackdown as next Monday Raw goes up against the undefeated New Orleans Saints vs. the talented New England Patriots. That game will get a huge rating without question.
Got an email today from Steve Austin who is in Vancouver and started filming another kick ass film Monday morning. Steve will be finished before Christmas and then will eventually migrate down to Texas to his ranch to hunt deer and to kick back a while. Mrs J.R. and I plan on visiting Steve some time in January.
We're getting lots of emails about a few radio interviews that Dwayne Johnson has done recently talking about doing something with WWE down the road beyond hosting a Monday Night Raw. I would bet a 6 Pak Challenge and throw in a case of BBQ Sauce that those remarks don't mean that Dwayne is thinking about wrestling again. I do not see that occurring but his appearances could mean an unlimited number of other things that don't include putting on the tights. Time will tell.
Man, it's tough on any wrestler, especially the veterans, to go on a succession of 17 one night stands abroad and then come back to the USA and perform on a major PPV and then produce two days of TV. I'm just saying.
I'm making some significant life style changes in my goal of attaining better overall health while my facial nerve takes its time to regenerate. My take is that I likely won't be back on TV this year. I wish and hope that I'm wrong but I'm only being honest, which is unusual for some in the wrestling biz, and realistic. I have to admit that the longer than I am home the harder it is going to be to go back on the road on a weekly basis.
To say I don't miss doing the big events would not be honest either. I found myself really wanting to kick some ass Sunday night while watching the Survivor Series. My friends tell me that I have nothing left to prove but I've always wanted to be able to influence my own destiny when the time came to call it a day. I don't feel that day is on anyone's calendar just yet. Stay tuned.
If I were putting together the pending Mayweather-Pacquiao fight for 2010 I would do it after May and in a Dome with cites bidding for it. This fight will be a "happening" and will easily do north of two million Pay Per View buys at likely around $59.95 or so a pop.
My Sooners have had a challenging year but I remain loyal to those entities of which I have made a commitment. I am committed to my team. We are going to be severely challenged with the annual Bedlam Game this Saturday, luckily in Norman, against the 9-2 Oklahoma State Cowboys with the Cowboys' Fiesta Bowl/BCS at large bid at stake. It looks as if I will be spending New Year's Eve in El Paso as it seems OU will play in the Sun Bowl. I expect to hear from my dear friend and OSU alum Jerry Brisco a few times this week as his Pokes will look to snap OU's 28 home game winning streak.
I will be at JR's BBQ Friday, off and on, and Saturday after the Bedlam game which kicks off at 11:30 a.m. central time on Fox Sports Southwest.
Remember, our on line store never closes and we still offer FREE SHIPPING on many items to the USA.

JR,
First of all, I'd like to wish you, and your lovely wife Jan, a very blessed, and Happy Thanksgiving! I hope it was a good one.
Second of all, I can't tell you how much I really enjoyed seeing, and watching, Jesse "The Body" Ventura hosting RAW last Monday night! Talk about bringing back some great memories from the past! I loved hearing Ventura color commentating alongside Vince McMahon. Great stuff, there! I loved it! I also loved it when Sgt Slaughter hosted RAW a few months back, as well. I guess it's the old school in me that really enjoys seeing WWE alumni hosting RAW most. We'll see how Vern Troyer, as well as other future hosts do. :)
I hate hearing that we won't see you back on Smackdown doing your color commentating until next year. Maybe this is the good Lord's way of reminding you to take it easy, and take care of yourself. I hope your facial paralysis will ease up soon.
I feel the need to run around my house a few times. Thanksgiving here at my house was good. Maybe too good! LOL!
Take care! God Bless you and Jan! :)
Happy Thanksgiving Jr. I enjoy Raw when the Jessie the Body Ventra hosted. Shamus is getting pushed by Cena.
If Jessie was still in the Wrestling game he would have been on hell of manger. Jessie never called Vince Mr. McMachon he always called him McMachon. Here is a wrestlemania main event. Kofi vs Shamus. It will be a classic match.
Happy Thanksgivng Jr. and go boomer sooners
If you are a miner, wouldn't underground be a great day too? If you are not underground, you're not working.
Now regarding the TLC PPV's lack of proper promotion. Unfortunately, you could promote 24/7 and I doubt that it would have any more sales than normal. There are two major factors working against sales: 1) the economy and 2) too many PPV events!
The first factor is only enhanced by the holiday season. (Happy Holidays) People might not have the extra $40 to spend on a three hour event. I know that I don't have the extra cash for a PPV right now.
The second factor is HUGE. I have been a wrestling fan since 1978. I watch Leaping Lanny Poffo put No Class Bobby Bass to sleep during NWA Atlantic Grand-Prix Wrestling. (Lanny Poffo is incredibly under-appreciated as an a performer.) From that moment until 2002ish, I was hooked on pro wrestling. Every Saturday, I waited for wrestling. I watch the local Grand Prix wrestling, AWA, NWA, and the then-WWF. As I matured, I began to appreciate the NWA/WCW style, vocalized by some guy named Jim Ross. More in-ring wrestling. I would wait impatiently for Starrcade or Wrestlemania. They were EVENTS. Now, they are just another show.
Why should I care about TLC? It wll be followed by the Royal Rumble which will be followed by another "can't miss event" only weeks later. I know the WWE would miss the needed income, but I would scrap several PPVs. Build the feuds to culminate at a MAJOR PPV. Utilize the shows to the best ability: promote the major event. Honestly, why would I care that DX is facing Orton and ???? for example when I see it every other week on Raw.
Sincerely,
Harvey www.harveymccarthy.com

I thought that was a great RAW. Personally I was hoping that they'd push Swagger, but that's an OU thing, lol. I think it's time to bring back managers and not just one or two stables. So many of the new guys just aren't great on the mike and they don't get you involved the way so many of the old time managers did.
Wish I was in Norman this weekend, but I can't make it. Praying for OUr Sooners to play just one game without losing someone to major injury. Sounds like Ben will eventually be ok, which is good. After talking to some of the folks close to the program, it sounds like the coaches have not lost the kids and they are having a really good week of practice, which should translate into number 29 in a row at home. OU will have a newer look next year and I bet that we'll be just fine and contending again.
Be well JR and I hope that things keep getting better for you.
Hi JR,
I'm curious as to what types of "lifestyle changes" you are making. Hopefully you don't have to cut back on the BBQ or the social beverages too much.
I think CM Punk's biggest asset right now is that he can deliver his lines without sounding scripted. Isn't that sad? He wins the award of best promo guy because everyone else's delivery sounds so fake. But what do you expect? These people are wrestlers, not actors.
Take care of yourself JR.

vanetti210, it happened because they're trying to do something new. The endless Triple H, John Cena and Randy Orton main events have finally come to an end. I mean seriously, we've had the same three people in the Raw main event for over a year. It's time for something fresh. The fans have been yearning for something new and now we get it. Give it a chance.
I was excited that I had tickets to the TLC PPV until last night..SHEAMUS REALLY??? J.R. You even know that that shouldnt be headlining a PPV event..I had to pay a hefty price to get good seats through"ticket brokers".How can they do this to their fans..Cena vs Sheamus..Funny how WWE likes peopl to forget that he jobbed to Golddust on WWE Superstars a while back..Im disgusted. If this was a houseshow I would e ok with that but we pay PPV Prices we should get a good headliner this isnt fair...Will you give your honest opinion why this truly happened?
JR it seems like the projections for the bowls are all over the place. OU figures to be either 4,5,6, or 8th seed from the conference. If OU beats OSU they might be 4th or 5th which means they'd get the Alamo Bowl on the 2nd vs. Michigan State. One site says says OU will play Navy in the Texas Bowl in Houston. Yet another says OU will play the Minnesota in the Insight Bowl in Tempe. Or OU might play Kentucky in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport.
Any preferences?
Btw, read a rumor that even if you are ready to return to the broadcast booth sooner, that you'll be held off so you can make your big return as the host of RAW at the taping on March 1st at Oklahoma City. It would be a good place to come back wouldn't it? Any truth? I say on that show have two or three of the Divas wrestling in a giant vat of JR's barbecue sauce with you as the ref. :)
Hello J.R.
I Just took advantage of the great deal u have going on and placed my order just in time for my birthday. I figure why go out to get BBQ when i can just order some of your J.R. sauce and make it myself. I hope u get well soon, i miss not seeing you on tv. I also suffer from an ongoing fight with bell's palsy. I have had it on and off for over 10 years now. I know the pain that it causes mentally. But like u said "Any day above ground is a great day!"
God Bless !!!
JR.--
I AM GLAD THAT ORTON DID NOT " CHEAP SHOT " THE GOVERNOR OF MINNESOTA. I WOULD HOPE THAT REALITY ONLY GOES SO FAR!
WHO DID THE PLANNER MEAN FOR THAT GOOFY DRESSED UP TURKEY TO REPRESENT????
GOOD SHOW , AND HURRY BACK, BUT IN ALL HAVE GOOD HEALTH WITH YOU WHEN YOU DO RETURN!
I loved Raw tonight and thought it was one of the the best shows in a long while. The focus on new stars was great and it was a pleasant surprise to see the amount of ring action on the show. Jesse Ventura was my favorite guest host by far. I've noticed that I prefer wrestler guest hosts than celebrities that know nothing about the WWE other than what they may have watched when they were kids.
Loved the show and hope that they keep doing Raw like this. It had a SmackDown feel to it which is definitely a good thing.
