Thanks for all the well wishes regarding my wife Jan and my 16th wedding anniversary which was Monday October 12. Who said it wouldn't last?! I'm a lucky man and I have enjoyed the past few days celebrating this milestone, in wrestling years being married to the same person for 16 years is like 50 years to "normal" folks, and we will continue to enjoy this week as we travel down to Dallas on Thursday to prep for the Red River Rivalry, the Oklahoma-Texas game on Saturday at 11 a.m. central time on ABC.
Business in our on line store is steady and today would be a great day to place your orders as we will ship them out in a matter of hours to the USA via Federal Express. Many of our sales packages include FREE SHIPPING! But wait, there's more..
I watched Raw Monday night while peaking at a helluva Monday Night Football contest between the Jets and the Dolphins. Landshark Stadium hasn't been too friendly for OU and it certainly wasn't for Gang Green as another team wearing orange won a big game just like "The U" last week against Oklahoma and Florida against the Sooners last January in the National Title Game.
One element that I really enjoyed regarding Raw was the various "hooks" that were utilized to keep me tuned in and to not channel surf as much during the commercial breaks. In my opinion, every episodically produced TV show, wrestling or otherwise, should do al they can to keep their audience emotionally invested from segment to segment but to also promote "next week." Getting a TV audience to think "next week" is a huge matter when producing weekly, episodic TV.
At least I know that next week's Raw main event will be HHH vs. Cena. Billboarding "next week" just seems to be a "must do" for any show that is episodically produced.
I did not dislike Nancy O'Dell or Maria Menounos' efforts on Raw as they were non abrasive, executed smoothly, performed what most would have expected them to do plus they will provide ample opportunities for WWE to garner additional publicity from their appearances. Isn't that the primary reason for "Guest Hosts" anyway? If any one thinks that a guest host is going to walk onto Raw and deliver in a 5 star, wrestling main event, then think again. It's all about the sizzle and facilitating the WWE talents to provide the steak.
Snoop Dogg is the host next week and Snoop is really a cool guy who "gets it" and is a legit fan. Too bad that I won't be there to see him in person.....poor me. I assume that Snoop will interact with Santino, which might be funny, and the talented Chris Jericho. What if Snoop is a closet Smackdown fan and makes the Raw fan favorites life a little uncomfortable Monday night?
Jerry Lawler's efforts to become Mayor of Memphis culminates this Thursday with the elections in The King's hometown. I know that Jerry has worked diligently in his campaign on little funds but his journey has become particularly an uphill one for him the past several weeks. I have read where some locals in Memphis feel that the city will never elect another Caucasian Mayor due to the fact that the city is 70% African American. I don't know if that is a true statement or not but race should not play a factor in electing one's political leaders but, as most know, it sometimes does. I think the Memphis news media honestly wants a "politician" to be elected Mayor as it may make for better copy as the good, old boy system will be perpetuated which always makes for a potentially good headline. Better "dirt" if you will.
Our country needs more honest citizens who simply want to improve their hometowns or their country and not continually elect professional politicians whose partisan politics are mauling America and disregarding the needs of the "Average Joe." Jerry will do a great job in representing Memphis if he is given the opportunity but I am afraid that the political machine there will not allow that to happen.
And that's a damn shame.
I haven't throughly examined the "huge" Diva trade...is that where "huge" or plus sized Divas are traded....never mind. Bottom line is that many fans would like to see the Divas become a more vital part of every TV wrestling show that airs. I would like to see on going issues forwarded on the weekly, wrestling TV shows too as it simply provides the viewer with more TV personas to emotionally invest.
My guess is that www.wwe.com got plenty of traffic off the Diva trade matter nonetheless.
So Bragging Rights will have a 7 on 7 tag featuring SD vs. Raw, not the video game, superstars....thanks for coming ECW. :) By the looks of the Raw 7 and who from SD are already obligated in a Fatal Four Way, Undertaker, Batista, Rey Mysterio and C.M. Punk, one could surmise that the Raw team is loaded and heavily favored.....much like Texas is against the Sooners on Saturday.
I did like the news of a Bragging Rights bout between Miz and Morrison which assume will not feature either's championship. This should be an excellent match especially if the mat aspect of it is a focused. Nice addition to the PPV from Pittsburgh which is one of my favorite towns in addition to being the wife's hometown. I wonder how many more WWE events will be held in the old, Igloo aka Mellon Arena, before the new place is completed. Probably not too many.
There's too much manure going around about big mouthed Rush Limbaugh potentially becoming an NFL owner with the St. Louis Rams. Limbaugh is a fierce, self promoter and sound byte specialist whose political views are often times, or so it seems, meant to incite rather than to inform, has a right to buy any thing he wants in America. That's how this country works. Were Limbaugh's statements once upon a time regarding African American Donovan McNabb ill advised and down right stupid? Yes. But it's all about the "GREEN" and the VAST majority of athletes no matter their color will take the cash and play in the NFL no matter their social or political dislikes of those in charge. If any one who has followed NFL football thinks that the Limbaugh matter is new material or a NFL first as it relates to how black people have been treated then look again. The Rooney Rule had to be put in place to simply get African American coaches a damned interview for head coaching jobs. This Limbaugh BS is just that and shouldn't affect him from potentially becoming a NFL owner but it it doesn't work out for Rush he will have plenty of new, cannon fodder to fire away at those who religiously listen to him on his massive, radio network.

Hmmm...the Memphis election is today? I'll have to look up information when I get the time. I ran for our State House in 2004. I quickly realized that the game centers around activists and insiders who want you to raise and spend money so that they can benefit from it. They also seek to manipulate races so as to make them appear to be as politically divisive as possible, almost in the same manner as building a pro wrestling feud, with just about the same results. It also doesn't help that I live in a state where the oil companies have so much sway over the political landscape. I would have to assume that Oklahoma is not that much different.
Has anyone ever seen the "match" (more like a publicity stunt) between Lawler and former Memphis congressman Harold Ford Sr.? I don't know if it was ever taped, or if I just saw photos of it.
About Maria - I don't watch the regular WWE programming, so my opinion may be totally off-base here. I finally bought the Randy Savage DVD this week, and didn't think she added much beyond shaking her rather ample bum. Then again, I haven't been a big fan in general of the inclusion of current WWE "Superstars" as hosts of these historical retrospective DVDs.
Also about Rush Limbaugh - I quit listening to him something like 15+ years ago, so I don't see what the big deal is other than he still enjoys a rather massive following. These days, I'm a huge Phil Hendrie fan - truth is our bitch! :-)
I can't believe you replied to me, thanks J.R.! :)
Also another one of your comments made me laugh...
"If the higher up's start a weight police I assume that I'm history."
:)

Hi. JR.
Bragging Rights: The match called fatel four way, will be interesting if you eleminate two superstars and then compete until the last man has pinned the other superstars, I hope thats the case. I will put my money on SD, why? because there is a whole locker room full off amazing talent, althought in my opinion, raw will have the strenght advantage, but SD will have the speed and unknown offensive moves. my money is also on Randy, he will likely win...he has that focus and mean streak of him and he always, make use of his ring awareness, which is the best option if you want to inflict pain, in that anything goes Iron Match..
Speaking of the wwe title, I would like to see # 1 contender matches for that title, or a fatel four way, or triple treat...these 2 superstars has been going on each other for the last half the year...one gets sick of seeing that....
I can't wait to see Snoop host Raw and I do agree that he is a closet SD fan... Mizz vs Morrison will be a show stealer, but ones again my money is on SD superstar, intercontinental champion John Morrison...
Great blog and good luck with the OU vs Red River game in Texas.....
And to follow up on my comment below, i'll admit Limbaugh has made comments in the past that some might find offensive which i'm guessing is what you meant by your "sound byte specialist" comment and I agree with you that should not disqualify him from taking taking part ownership of an NFL team. Thinking back, I don't recall any sports writers who are trashing Rush being critical of rapper Jay-Z, who's made offensive statements in the past himself, before he became part owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets.
"Limbaugh is a fierce, self promoter and sound byte specialist whose political views are often times, or so it seems, meant to incite rather than to inform"
Hey JR,
I love you my friend but you're showing your political ignorance. Have you ever listened to Limbaugh for more than a few minutes if at all? My guess is no but if you did, you'd know that he is far from a "sound bite specialist" and his political views are meant to inform (and educate) rather than to incite whether you agree with him or not. The exact opposite of what you think. Don't believe everything negative you read when it comes to him.
Fair enough. I don't "hate" the guy and I have listened to him more than you might think and long before he went national. I do know that he is a staunch Republican which is fine but he seems to not be one prone to much compromise. Nonetheless, enough about politics as I am not a fan of them these days.
"should do all they can to keep their audience emotionally invested from segment to segment but to also promote "next week."
Beautifully said J.R. Thank you

I'm rooting for SmackDown at Bragging Rights!
Hopefully Captain Jericho can "bring home the bacon" for the superior SmackDown.
If I were you I would take Raw and lay the points. :)
As a big fan of the ECW brand, I have to say that I'm a bit ruffled that they are not being involved in the main event for brand superiority at Bragging Rights. I feel that ECW frequently puts on one of the best hours of programming in WWE, and as a whole, is better than RAW, and often on par with, if not better than, SmackDown. So, in my mind, they kind of got the shaft with all the hype around this main event tag match proving who is the best brand.
But, on the other hand, I am hoping for and expecting an ECW Title match that would tie-up most of their roster anyway. Ryder vs. Regal vs. Yoshi vs. Christian seems most likely based on what's been happening lately. I'd be glad to see that, especially since there was no ECW Title match on the last PPV.
It often feels like WWE overlooks ECW and I think that's unfortunate, because it really is a solid show with good storylines, quality wrestling, and a talented and unique rsoter, that I wish more people would check out.
Just my two cents. Thanks again for all you do, JR.
The Raw team for bragging rights will most likely have more main eventers than the Smackdown team, why is that? Can't the teams be equal in terms of star power. It seems WWE wants Raw to look superior. Is that true?
It's called a lack of main event talent depth and SD has 4 of its biggest stars in one match.
The Diva Trade really benefits SmackDown, as you've now got two Divas with 7 world titles between them in Mickie James and Beth Phoenix.
Any truth to the rumours that Mickie is on SmackDown because WWE are unhappy with her weight?
Beats me but being exiled to SD doesn't' seem like punishment to me. If the higher up's start a weight police I assume that I'm history. :)
