Start ShoppingI hope that every one is having a great weekend. I have spent a bunch of time this week at our BBQ joint in Norman which is always fun but even more fun when we have a massive weekend as we have had this weekend. Thanks for the business if any of you who dined with us happen to be reading this blog. I'm looking forward to heading to "6-Burgh" in a few hours to prep for the taping of Smackdown Tuesday night in the Mellon Arena. It's BBQ'ed Blog time.....
Reid Flair, the youngest son of "The Nature Boy" was arrested again last week for another DUI and apparently in possession of heroin. The drunk driving matter is a serious issue but the heroin business takes this matter into an entirely new level of severity. Reid needs extensive, professional help immediately and he needs to take that help seriously, as in life or death serious. The young man is lucky that he is still alive and is flirting with disaster as would any one who uses and abuses illegal drugs and/or alcohol. I think being in the wrestling business should be the furtherest thing from Reid's mind right now and quite honestly the wrestling biz simply might not be the right vocation for the son of arguably the greatest in ring performer of all time. Following any famous father's footsteps is a daunting task for any athlete or entertainer especially in the relatively small world of pro wrestling. Reid Flair needs to address his issues and prioritize getting healthy and not worry about learning how to be the "next Naitch" or Reid's next booking. Reid's generation, in general, has entitlement issues that will never serve them well and that usually lead to disaster to some degree including the ultimate disaster of facilitating one's own demise. The good Lord gave Reid a break but my suggestion to Reid is for Reid Flair to not to P.O. Him, man up, and prioritize living his life clean and sober. I'm pulling for Reid to kick out of this matter and get his life on track and to evaluate if putting all his eggs into the "wrestling basket" is prudent thinking.
We get tons of emails about tag team wrestling in today's TV wrestling marketplace. Bottom line is this.....great tag team wrestling has its place in the business w/o question and I am a long time fan of some of the greatest tag teams ever in wrestling. Back in the day, no one wanted to follow a Midnight Express vs. Rock 'n Roll Express bout on any card if they didn't have to. However, teams like that don't exist any longer. Period. Bottom line. End off story. If teams can come together organically and develop natural rivalries with other quality teams, then I say go for it. However, to simply throw teams together, as some fans suggest, for the sake of having a tag bout on TV makes little sense to me. Over the years, with some exceptions, the big money in wrestling has always been in one on one bouts and that fact hasn't changed today in my view. With the overall lack of quality, main event level depth within the business today, I do not see red hot, tag team wrestling returning any time soon to the scene especially if fans are looking for several, established teams to dot the landscape.
My prediction of a KO win and picking Manny Pacquiao Saturday night in Vegas over tough, Ricky Hatton was on the money but I can't honestly tell you that I thought Manny would KO "Hitman" in two rounds. That was a shocker and Pacquiao looked like he was from another, faster galaxy. Now the world will anxiously await to see it a Pacquiao-Mayweather, Jr. fight can be facilitated which would be another step in taking boxing off its perceived life support system.
Ever wonder why most wrestling bouts utilize no time limits on TV or at live events? Me, too. I think using time limits adds to the drama much like main stream sporting events that utilize a game clock in various fashions. I personally like the sense of urgency that time limits provides a wrestling match. Of course, that's just one man's opinion.
Don't be mislead by seeing the late Buddy Rose in all those late night, tag bouts on AWA Classics on ESPN Classic from time to time and think that Rose was just an o.k. in ring performer. Buddy Rose was, in truth, an excellent in ring talent and some of his bouts in the WWWF against Pedro Morales and Bob Backlund were of the big time variety. Many long time WWWF fans and historians will second that statement I assure you. Buddy's weight became his enemy later in his career but he still always retained his natural timing and his excellent in ring psychology.
The upcoming Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin bout at UFC 101 will be an offensive, aggressive and physical battle that will erase many casual MMA fans memory of Silva's last PPV outing in Montreal. Griffin "comes to fight" and to impose his will on his adversaries so one can be assured that the great Anderson Silva will be pushed and pressured in this fight where we'll see Silva step up in weight. As I have said before, I am jacked about Lesnar-Mir at UFC 100, GSP, too, but Silva vs. Griffin should be one of the most exciting fights of the year at least it seems to be on paper. Obviously, only the two fighters themselves can make their upcoming main event live up to the hype but I will be one shocked, BBQ aficionado if that occurs.
This just in....not really "just" in as it was apparently a slow news week in 'rasslin but the Iron Sheik apparently wet his pants on Opie and Anthony's radio show last week. I saw this "news item" on the 'net but refused to click on to the photo....o.k. so I took a quick peek and it was sad and not funny.
We've had a run on new questions for our Q&A Section of which we have updated...AGAIN.
I wish people would stop asking me how to get a job with WWE and simply do what other somewhat normal people do and that is to contact the WWE Human Resources Department and find out the job openings and qualifications thereof. If one is looking to be a WWE broadcaster, get ample experience in broadcasting and make yourself a demo reel to accompany your resume and make sure that you don't look or sound like me.
Another emailer asked why I mentioned why I 'hated" "Beyond the Mat." I never said I 'hated" the film but did not like other aspects of the project. I thought, with good reason, that this was going to be a small, art house, film and a film that the producers wanted to do because of their passion for the business after being life long fans. At the end of the day and as I understand it, the film made money, was more than an art house film, sold a fair amount of DVD's, and those of us who devoted many hours to it never saw the first dime or even a complimentary, DVD copy of the movie. The editing and creative process of "Beyond the Mat" is extraordinary but the "art of the deal" left a little to be desired in my opinion. To demonstrate that I am not a "hater," wrestling fans who have not seen the movie should take a look at it but we aware that it looks at the rather dark, underbelly of the business and doesn't highlight many of the positives of which there are plenty to tout.

What's the over/under in Jose Canseco not signing his contract to fight in the circus-like MMA event in a few weeks in Japan? Jose can cite "contractual issues" for his reason to wisely, perhaps, develop the limbertail.
Thanks for stopping by and for supporting all our BBQ efforts. Your business and continued support are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If I were a WWE Creative Writer, I would..
Hello everyone, I'm back and I hope you've enjoyed my first blog "A Brief Synopsis on the Changes in WWE". This time, I'd like to offer some help to WWE Creative on future angles that they could choose to take (of course, with my permission) regarding storylines.
First of all, I'd like to start by pointing out that most of the current WWE fanbase is exhibiting different moods towards WWE's recent programming. Some have stopped watching it, others have 'crossed the line' into TNA, and others (such as myself) continue to watch, hoping that there would be that Attitude-like spark ignited again.
There are several routes I'd take with WWE's current storyline plots that would enhance overall viewing pleasure, pertaining mainly to several Superstars and their characteristics:
1) Randy Orton - His new "Viper" gimmick is hot like cakes, and shouldn't be changed, however, as we all know, the majority of his fanbase range from the ages of 15-34. He is well-over with the young male demographic, so, turning him 'tweener' (babyface with heel-like mannerisms - ala Stone Cold Steve Austin) would get him even more over. I just don't see Mr. RKO being recognized as one of the best heels in the industry, but rather, as one of the best 'kick-assers' in the business.
The Setup: Have him feud with his Legacy mates. Legacy turns their backs on Randy due to jealousy and envy over the fact that he's the current WWE champion and they don't have gold on their waists. Have Randy get his butt kicked a bit, be sidelined for several weeks, and return at a PPV while Legacy is taking out another top Superstar. This would help Randy Orton score a huge pop with the fans and start his tweener run. It's very important not to make him SQUEAKY CLEAN, he should still be the 'Viper' that he is, but in an upbeat kind of way.
2) Batista- Time to put good ol' Batista in a "Is he face or is he heel?" situation, with the outcome being a backstab to a major fan favorite (perhaps MVP, or Jeff Hardy) People often complain about his lack of moveset and his barely apprehensible mic skills, so something like this would boost his macho a bit.
The Setup: Batista, like Orton, would like to form his own stable, in which most people would think it'll be a face stable. Perhaps, for several weeks, Vickie Guerrero could make stipulations in matches on Raw, that favor Batista without his knowledge. He can play the "I don't know what's goin' on" role for a couple of weeks and then get caught backstage making out with Vickie Guerrero. How much of a twist would that be?! In his stable, could be a returning Triple H, The McMahons, The Guerreros, and himself. Call it the 'Faction' or something like that.
3) Matt Hardy - The Cain vs. Abel angle was good while it lasted but now I would move on to bigger and better things. He needs a major opponent. Please don't make the mistake and have him feud with MVP, been there, done that. Instead, have him surprise attack people for several weeks backstage (whereas his identity isn't revealed) to build up suspense and then reveal who it really is.
4) John Cena - Plain and simple - TURN HIM HEEL!!! What are you waiting for? I understand that he accounts for a huge amount of WWE's bottom line merchandise sales, but once the younger generation matures, they WILL change their preferred fan favorite, trust me! He is long overdue for a heel turn, considering all of the boos he's been receiving over the last 3 years. The perfect plot would be for Cena to come out on Raw one night and say that he is making a major announcement. Cena comes out to the ring as normal (Hustle, Loyalty and Respect-style) and salutes the crowd as usual. For this to work, it must be done at a location where boos are in abundance.
Cena: "Hey, ya, I've got an important announcement to make. I'm not here to tell you that the Champ is here, or that, You can't see me! I just came out here to tell all of you something from the bottom of my heart. **pause** silence - - All of ya'll can kiss my ass!! I'm sick and tired of your boos...I never cared about any of you...I used all of you to make money, make movies and to make myself a multi-time WWE champion. I'm thuglife and I will always remain thuglife and if any of you boo me again, I'll show you what real RESPECT is!" It's a masterpiece! Cena will get the heaviest heel reaction ever seen or heard since the Montreal Screwjob.
If you need anymore ideas, please email me at ronthebroker@googlemail.com.

just saying hi saw you walking through dulles airport the other day.
Hi, JR. I was watching RAW last night and noticed something that is happening now that didn't seem to be happening in the past.
When Big Show came out and put the beat down on Cena, no referees, agents, officials, etc. came out to try and stop him. Since that didn't happen, the segment became somewhat boring since Big Show is the bigger guy so he should be beating down Cena, especially since Cena is "hurt".
It would make more sense to me to have the officials and agents running out to try and stop the Big Show, only to have him beat them up to get to Cena. This would, in my opinion, make the segment more dramatic and make Show seem like more of a monster. It seemed like they used to always come out when Austin was beating on someone or Triple H or anyone like that.
What are your thoughts? Thanks, Drake.
You make a lot of great points JR. I agree that it definitely has it's place and needs REAL tag teams, not just random guys thrown together...kinda like these guys, the OVW Tag Team Champs...JD & PB - TST...
Top Shelf Talent challenge the WWE Tag Team Champions for May 18th:

On Tag Teams : Several things honestly need to be added back to Sports Entertainments version of wrestling and tag teams in particular.
1: Tag ropes being used. A great tension builder, rule breaking excuse and free weapon.
2: Hand to hand tags only. This slap on the shoulder , back, head etc used in wwe to bring in reluctant partners really sucks. Takes the edge off of someone not tagging.
3: Definately hands down agree with the time limits being added back into things. How else can you do a legit dusty finish, or time limit draw to build up a rivalry. Look at some classic matches that ended up with the pin at a two count with a knocked out opponent and time is called. Brings down the house and builds that rivalry to a huge heated rematch. Thats good business.
On The "Playboy" : I had the extreme pleasure of meeting one of my main wrestling idols back in the late 80's in Seattle at one of the NWA's Bunkhouse Stampede tours. Buddy was working the undercard as were most of the boys from Portland's promotion. Having kept time for the Owen family at house shows in the past I was able to get partially into the back to meet some of the boys. I had no clue buddy was coming in for the show. I saw my heel idol standing there in his black velvet robes weighing close to 400 lbs at the time. He looked sad and haggard. I went up and introduced myself requesting an autograph. That mans eyes lit up, and the biggest smile hit his face I had ever seen. We talked for several minutes about the good old days of Portland in the 70's and then he had to get ready for the show. Ever a gentleman he gave me his home phone number ( I'm just a big fan at this point). Over the years we got to chatting several times. What a great guy.
But the point I'm building up to was, Buddy was loved by at least 95% of the people he worked with. When I met him that night at weighing in at 375 lbs the man did 10 one handed pushups in the ring and dropped an elbow from the top rope as well as took a drop over the top through a table. Buddy may have been fat in his later years and chubby in his younger but he was to paraphrase HHH "That Damn Good". Buddy could make you smile even at his heel worst. You loved to hate him, even when he was dirty, underhanded, rotten to the core in his actions, and people threw beer at him or even chairs in the ring, he kept on smiling and you couldn't really hate him.
As far as his work rate, check out any of the old AWA Rose/Summers Versus the Rockers matches. sorry Shawn and Marty but they made you boys as a team.
I guess what I'm saying is he was very, very under rated by fans. Buddy never fit anyones mold as a wrestler, he was unique, but give him 2 airplays on the mic shooting and any small regional promotion was guaranteed a draw.
I like to think of Buddy Rose as the mid-cards Ric Flair. I told him that several times and he used to giggle at that one every time. He loved it.
Gonna miss you boss. Wish we coulda met up again before you passed. God Bless you.
Thanks J.R. for all you do putting up with us fans.
I appreciate the input regarding tag team wrestling, but will wholly disagree that it is "fans" who demand two people flippantly slapped together to be tag teams. Rather, we've come to expect that over the years.
Sometimes it works out very well - I seem to recall internet snobs referring snidely to the poorly-slapped together twosome who would eventually become the New Age Outlaws. I recall the same disgust/confusion over why in the world Blackjack Bradshaw and Farooq would be put together. In hindsight, both were great decisions. Meanwhile, attempts to make "teams" (w/ singular names/outfits) didn't always work out very well. I remember the shortly-lived Blackjacks Part 2 (and was sad that they didn't work out).
In the end, though, the WWE has not focused on tag team wrestling anymore (strangely, during an era where singles matches appear to be the exception to the rule). We get people who are slapped together with no explanation - recall that CM Punk and Kofi Kingston held the tag titles late last year, with no buildup to their union, and no blowoff for their separation. The history of tag teams seems to intersperse actual teams with quickly-thrown together twosomes (Edge/Orton, Kane/Show, Flair/Piper), and the tag titles themselves relegated as a tool to advance a larger feud, rather than the tag team division itself. I even recall seeing the late, great Hawk team up w/ Animal to take on champions - remember? - Kane and RVD in a one-shot on Raw during the Bischoff as GM days. What in the world kind of history did RVD and Kane have to deserve the titles?
Further evidence that the decline of tag team wrestling is NOT the fans' doing is the forced split of Miz/Morrison. A great team who utilized team moves, were consistently the ire of the crowd, and who made the belts mean something (at least more than nothing). Now, to emphasize the randomness of the "draft," they split.
Last but not least is the weakness of the tag teams themselves. Look at the list of the actual *teams* out there, and you'll see London/Kendrick, La Resistance, Spirit Squad - all teams who, at one point, where single-handedly annihilated by the top-tier performers on Raw/Smackdown.
In short (finally!), tag team wrestling has no respect within the WWE, as it hasn't been presented as a worthwhile element of the product in well over half a decade. Do you think Demolition, the Legion of Doom, the Midnight Express, the Steiner Brothers, Harlem Heat, or The British Bulldogs would have respect and reverance if they were beaten in 4-minute handicap matches by Ludvig Borga on Prime Time Wrestling? Hardly.
I appreciate and respect your opinion, but the harm done to tag team wrestling has come from within the structure of your employer. I find it insulting that you accuse the fans of having a say in this at all. Find fault with who is actually at fault.
I don't think it's fair to say that tag wrestling isn't a valuable commodity to a wrestling company. Look at some of the teams that have been through the WWE in the past and you'll see some of your best bread winners, by far.
Look at E&C. The Hardy's. The Dudley Boys (3-D). New-Age Outlaws. That's just to name a few.
And to say great tag teams no longer exist? I think it is more a case of the WWE Talent scouts not looking in the right places because there are a Hell of a lot of great tag teams out there, you're just not looking in the right places.
Yes, people cheer on a singles competitor, maybe more so than a tag team. But it's all about development and developing them properly will make the WWE money when they begin their careers (see E&C) and at the peak of their careers. (See Edge, I won't comment on Christian because he deserves a monstrous push).
Perhaps WWE aren't considering the options that tag wrestling present with enough depth themselves because the quality of singles wrestlers they're trying to push these days (with the exception of Edge, Jericho and Cena) is pathetic. Go back to square one and develop people properly again. PLEASE! For wrestling's sakes.
Another great blog JR.
I feel sad for Reid, I have seen him at a local show and thought he had some good unmolded talent. But it is true that he will probably never outgrow his fathers shadow. I wish him the best and hope he gets clean.
I do not believe the tag team division is dead. In the WWE yes, but not in wrestling in general. I believe Vince doesn't want to pay two guys at once and that is why there are hardly any teams.
Take a look at TNA. They have Beer Money, Motor City Machine guys, LAX, team 3D, etc.
Tag Teams still work if you give them a chance. Maybe Vince has a few things to learn. Or is it HHH running the show now?
Bang Bang
just read your blog and i am shocked bout Reid Flair and his doing. Wonder how daddy feels about his son's unlawfull behavior.
also wwe tag teams in this day and age is very energetic, and they love to fly and there is nothing more intertaining than watching these young superstars do what they do best.
can't wait to read your next blog. Richard
Tag team wrestling died when the Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian seperated.
when is wwe going do a big event in toledo ohio, our economy really needs it and 5/3 field would be a great place. Also the blogs are great.
JR,
Really look forward to your blogs. I agree with you about Reid.
Naitch, had issues from time to time, the difference being Ric COULD communicate with thousands of people every night. Most Importantly he COULD communicate with himself. I want the best for Reid, you are correct, he MUST master his demons with professional help..
"When the master is not present in the house (our minds), it is easy for unwanted guest to arrive." (you can quote me on that, if you don't quote yourself, nobody else will, you can quote me on that also)
I haven't ask a question in a long time so here goes.
Do you see the late Playboy Buddy Rose in the HOF someday? I did see him when I was a kid in the WWWF against Backlund
You mentioned the R&R Express and TMX. HOF candidates someday? Just Curious
Wishing you happiness, joy, laughter and prosperity till next time or I get to your BBQ joint
