Rumble...Raw...Riding with Tazz...Heading to the Super Bowl...Rourke Stepping Out of His World

The 22nd Royal Rumble was a fun event from where I was sitting as Tazz & I had the opportunity to broadcast a memorable WWE Title match that still has me scratching my head and the Royal Rumble Match with my fellow Hall of Famer and former Monday Night Raw partner Jerry Lawler. Here are some random thoughts from the past few days in the life of J.R.

Saturday I left OKC on Northwest Airlines non stop (gasp) to Detroit where it was about 10 degrees when I landed 45 minutes early at 6:30 p.m. The baggage claim area was full of fans looking for photos and autographs of which I tried to acommodate. There was another large contingent of WWE fans at the downtown Marriott near the Joe Louis Arena. Without question wrestling fans have no issues in bringing chairs, photos, and all sorts of signable goods to sign. During the process,  I refused to hold a new born child nor would I sign the infant's arm but that shouldn't make me a bad guy.  Other than that all went well.

Tazz and I had our assignment of handling the WWE Title bout but no one knew for sure who was going to call the Rumble match until a few hours prior to the event starting. I was fortunate to do my prep as if I was going to be a part of the presentation just in case.  King was King and  he rolled with the flow but working with Jerry was fun ("they put the band back together for one more show.") and it did not seem that we missed too many beats.  At least,  that was Mrs. J.R's opinion but she is biased. We hoped that you enjoyed it too.

Great start to the PPV with young, Okie Jack Swagger's ECW Title defense against Matt Hardy. I like a fast moving opening match with intensity as it seems to more often that not set the stage for the PPV event. I had a nice visit with Swagger prior to the show and encouraged him to be athletic and aggressive but that he would ALWAYS be the second toughest man in Perry, Oklahoma behind Danny Hodge, Not that that's a bad thing.

John Cena and JBL had a fundementally sound, hard hitting contest but HBK is so good that he essentially stole the spotlight during this World's Title bout from hi sprimarily ringside role. The JBL/HBK relationship has been an intriging one and continued to be through Monday's Raw in Cleveland. I have no clue who Shawn Michaels will wrestle at WM25 but following his bout for most wrestlers will be next to an impossibility. Big Event=Wrestlemania=Mr. Wrestlemania. Case closed.

"My Tazz" as my partner is called my the MyNetworkTV officials who love him and I drove over 300 LONG, SLOW miles from Detroit to Indianapolis on Monday and got so bored we started counting the outdoor basketball goals in the yard of the homes along the highway in Indiana where hoops rule. We usually just "knock" everyone in the biz on these extended car trips but I guess we were in a more mellow mood leaving Motown.

By the way, Friday Night Smackdown attracted over 4 MILLION viewers last Friday night which is another MyNetworkTV record. Tazz is without question "so over" as FNSD's #'s dominated virtually every male demo. As a former EVP of WWE I would suggest to the WWE board that they re-sign the Smackdown Announce team to long term, lucrative deals to insure the continuity of building the bedrock of this new and rapidly rising network. I'm just saying.

Raw was an interesting show from a new arena in Cleveland at least new to the WWE which usually plays the Gund. It looked like a near packed house which always helps as it did big time Sunday in "The Joe."

Master Randy Orton slithered into the ring and mouthed an apology  but I have to admit I certainly listened to his verbiage closely. Orton is a very compelling character and seems to be the most talked about character on Monday nights based on the reguloar Joe's I talk to while on the road.  I knew that Orton had "issues", his words not mine, but I never knew the official name for him as most of his peers apparently use the slang for the ailment which has to do with a certain part of the male anatomy. Orton is a red hot star on Raw and will no doubt, unless something shocking occurs, play a vital role at he 25th Anniversary of Wrestlemania whether some folks ike it or not. Whether or not I personally like Orton or I don't,  I can't wait to see what he does next week on Raw especially after two members of the McMahon Family have now physically assaulted Mr. RKO who hears voices in his head.

The WWE is wasting no time in starting the No Way Out promotion in Seattle where two Elimination Chamber matches will take place with both the World's Title and the WWE Title at stake. I like the process of eimination matches being held to determine the challengers and not a lottery or a random drawing type scenario.

What if the matches on Smackdown wereall ten minute time limit matches where the man that earns the most decisions qualifies? Just an idea.

On a serious note, these Chamber matches are realy dangerous and are truly unforgiving and it amazes me that more men have not been seriously injured wrestling in such a unique and deadly environment. I know of not one wrestler who would say that the Elimination Chamber is their favorite match.

Michael Cole and Lawler were both under the weather Monday night but they seemed to have good nights as I listened to their work in one of the world's oldest airport hotels still standing in America. Tazz and I saved some WWE cash by not flying to Indy and by driving instead. The baseball mogal/Smackdown analyst is quite the wheel man and I could have easily seen the former ECW Champ and Human Suplex Machine being Tony Soprano's driver back in the day on HBO,

Michael Cole said that Golden Globe winning actor Mickey Rourke was a "helluva athlete" which sort of surprised me on two fronts. One, that WWE announcers can say "helluva" and that the rejuvenated actor was an athlete but I do remember his brief boxing career. As reported here, Rourke hanged with Ric Flair, Pam Anderson, and others at the premier of "The Wrestler" a few weeks ago at a party at the Four Seasons tht did not disperse until after 5 a.m. I don't know how noted ladies men and social drinkers Flair and Rouke could have tolderated hanging with the buxom Anderson when she was in the mood to party. (That was a joke for goodness sakes.)  I should have been there to chaperone.

The Mrs. and I saw "The Wrestler" Friday night, watched it twice,  and enjoyed it. A really strong, dramatic film that depicts how people who are obsessed with their own lives and their careers can self destruct even though they know that what they are doing is wrong and could even kill them. I've seen virtually every sports movie ever made and this one was the closest to depicting accurately several wrestlers I have known in the 70' and 80's in the regional territory days who would forsake all the good things in their lives to hear their name announced and to enjoy the ensuing reception the crowd provided them. I would think that to a certain dgree that this still goes on today in some obscure indy's primarily because of the reasons I outlined but perhaps more importantly because the wrestlers need the pay days and want to be discovered.

In a word the movie is sad. It is well done without question and the people in charge did study throughly certain smaller sized promotions and how their wrestlers live, are booked and paid. Perhaps it is to some fans but to me using a staple gun on one's self isn't wrestling but on the other side of the coin perhaps falling on thumb tacks, etc isn't either. I will say that in the WWE "hardcore" days that some still clammor for the stunts were risky but not a guaranteed trip to a hospital and usually a story was told and it wasn't merely indecriminate violence. Plus, for better or worse, the money was much better.

These points are easy to debate and arguments can be made on either side of the issue but the bottom line is that I feel that wrestling fans and movie fans in general who are stimulated by compelling storytelling and truly believeable characters will be happy they go see "The Wrestler."

For the record, my wife Jan thought the Marisa Tomei character (an aging stripper) was the same character as Mickey  Rourke only in a different profession. She was in a business at a time of her life that she wanted out of, was conflicted, had a child involved in a single household, and finally made a move to better her personal and professional life but she might have made it too late. The same can be said for Rlurke who drove his Randy the Ram character to the edge but would he stop in time gefore going over the dliff only to never return?

See the movie. Wrestling fan or not....see the movie.

My wife and I are attending the Super Bowl this weekend, our first, as my wife is a MAJOR Steelers fan having grown up in Glenshaw, Pa, We got our tickets throuh the Steelers organizaation of which we sincerely appreciate and will obviously be rooting for the Steelers in a game that will be much closer I think that perhaps many do. The 7 point spread troubles me and the bookies usually know more than the rest of us ham and eggers. Something just feels a miss with the odds. BTW we are parking at fellow WWE HOF'ers Brisco Brothers Body Shop if you're keeping score at home.

Did you know that the late Dick Murdoch came "this close" in becoming the NWA champion once upon a time? Much closer than most insiders ever imagined.

I STRONGLY suggest that you buy a book I just read over the past 2-3 days, "Oklahoma Shooter: The Dan Hodge Story."  This book is an easy read, with some awesome, classic info in it, amazing photos all doucumening the life of arguably the greatest wrestler who ever lived. If you want to know more about amateur wrestlers's most feared man, the #1 heavyweight amateur boxer in America, the man who would dominate MMA today, and the shooter that the shooters didn't want a piece of buy the book. I promise that you will love it. It's also family friendly and afteer you read the student in the family could even do a book report on it.  to order the book you can phone  641-791-3072.

We are planing a book signing with Dan in our JR'S BBQ/Moore, Oklahioma store in early February of which will provide you move details.

Tuesday night in Indianapolis is onr of the most challenging days of the week with the doubleheader Smackdown TV taping so please say a prayer for us. 22 segments of live to tape TV is a broadcasters nightmare but nothing that some great wrestling won't fix.

Thanks for the business many of you have sent our way and we will be back here soon as I arrive back in icy Norman on Wednesday, I hope.

Boomer Sooner!

I saw "The Wrestler" last week and really liked it a lot.  I've watched wrestling for nearly 24 years, and, based on what I have seen and read over the years, I, too, agree that this movie probably nails it as far as the local or independent wrestler who is past his prime and in bad health, but still won't hang up the boots.  There are the obvious issues with steroids and painkillers that have happened, the medical issues that may not be made known to the general public.  then there is the sad fact that being on the road for many weeks out of the year could possibly lead to being estranged from your children, and ultimately burned out and broke.

i liked how they went "behind the scenes" in an open matter-of-fact manner, and showed you what really happens(even down to the hidden razor blade in the taped fists).

The matches themselves were definitely brutal and extreme, and made me cringe at times, and showed why Randy the Ram looked the way he did and in how much bad shape he was internally.

His story outside the ring is sad and painful, and it's even more sad that his inability to live with the "afterlife" of wrestling takes him back to a place he shouldn't go.

In the end, it seems as if the Director wanted us the audience to make up our own ending, which, for me, is an unfortunate tragic ending.

Still, though, I loved the movie, and hope Rourke gets the Oscar nod.

I maybe out of order, but I wanted to give my opinion on one thing.

It doesn't bother me that the FU name has been dropped for Cena's finishing move.

Sometimes I do ask myself if, at 26, WWE still talks to me with the PG turn, but I don't really care with that particular change.

But why call it the throwback? It's pretty lame no? I'm only a fan, but it seems to me that a better name could have been found, especially for a big star like Cena!

I know the WWE did not really like the signs of a guy that had "We've Cena nuff" written on one, but why not use this? Why not call Cena's finishing move "the Cena nuff"?

It's only an example, a suggestion. It only seems to me that with the creative talent in the WWE, you can find a better name than "the throwback".

 To reply to F5...

I've actually been a big fan of Mixed Martial Arts for several years longer than the WWE. I don't buy into this "rivalry" thing between MMA and pro wrestling (the cheap Frank Trigg-AJ Styles feud TNA did was particularly lame), and I think a person can easily be a fan of both. The reason Punk annoys me is because his moves are blatant MMA piggybacking rather than a true homage.

Mixed Martial Arts are popular right now, so Punk is all of a sudden a "master" of Muay Thai despite the fact that he can't throw a decent roundhouse kick or stop his arms from flailing all over the place when he does. He's also stolen a trademark from one of the best fighters of all time (Wanderlei Silva's pre-fight finger roll), but he does it limp-wristed and with a stupid grin on his face rather than with Wanderlei's ferocious intensity, who is aptly nicknamed "The Axe Murderer."

Punk is just boring. He's a vanilla face with (as F5 put it) no distinctive skills on the mic or the mat, given an MMA gimmick to piggyback on the sport's current popularity. Punk needs to either take some actual Muay Thai classes, or get a new gimmick.

Hi JR!!!!

You do pay attention to your job, and I know you're humble and probably will consider this too much, but you, once again, showed the huge difference between you and "human" announcers! You're amazing! I hope you don't mind if I copy you when I do commentary for fun with my friends ;-)

Now, talking about the Rumble.

Swagger is precious I'm sure that if he doesn't mess anything up he will become a very prominent WWE Superstar in a short period of time, the guy has "it", he has that potential to make you go on in this business. Besides I don't like the Hardy brothers, Matt in particular, so any time he gets his ass kicked I'm happy :D You can easily imagine how I felt when they were so crazy to go against he who's my favorite of favorites, Brock Lesnar :D

The WWE title match was fantastic, Edge and Jeff have a great chemistry and they can wrestle always great matches, Edge Vs Jeff Vs HHH(which I hope will win) is still the match I'd like to see at WrestleMania. What Matt Hardy did was gold, I was shocked, and your silence was the best thing to do to help the segment. As for Edge, he's some kind of protegé to me as back in the late 90s I proudly was one of the few who was sure he will have become one of the most important wrestlers on the planet.

You're right about what you say about HBK, he's so good that he stole the show by simply watching a match and hitting two superkicks.

I actually was surprised that Randy Orton won the Rumble, I was quite sure HHH would have won it, but that's fine with me, in the last months my respect for Orton's work has grown steadily and I'm happy he will be a part of the main event @ WM. I like the story with the McMahon family even if I was a bit perplexed when I saw Shane knocking The Legacy out so easily.

And finally I agree with g-off about CM Punk, really he's not nice to see, also beacuse I don't like MMA and I think MMA got nothing on Pro Wrestling. His technique is not what it should be, considering how he's promoted, and in my opinion, he's nothing special on the mic. I don't see him being any better than the most part of the WWE roster.

I hope the WWE is not thinking about the nth match between The Big Show and The Undertaker, above all not @ WM, we've seen enough. Undertaker needs something fresh to beat @ WrestleMania. Kozlov could have been a candidate if only is in ring work was better. But basically I just want to see Taker kicking someone's ass @ WrestleMania!

Here's to you getting that long-term, lucrative deal, J.R.!

I don't know why this is bothering me, and I'm sure I am not the first to point this out, but the upcoming Wrestlemania is NOT the "25th Anniversary." It is Wrestlemania 25, meaning that it is the 24th anniversary. Wrestlemania 1 does not count as an anniversary, it was the inaugural event. Wrestlemania 2 was the 1st anniversary, Wrestemania 3 was the 2nd, and so on. I am sure that somebody within the WWE has recognized this, but for whatever reason, it has been billed as such anyway.

The WWE Championship match made you scratch your head, JR?  Well, it was making me kick myself with frustration.

I had been a little Hulkamaniac as a kid, but had drifted away from wrestling as I grew up.  I came back because of Kurt Angle, leading the charge against the Alliance while The Rock was off in Hollywood and Stone Cold was playing for the other team.  I left WWE again not when Kurt Angle left the company (which I should have done) but when Cena won the belt for the third time.

That should have been the end.  I came back again because of Jeff Hardy and his quest for the championship.  And fool me, I thought they would actually give the belt to Jeff for a while.  Not for as long as I wanted (Night of Champions), but at least until Wrestlemania.  I knew there was a story behind the mysterious attacks, and I knew that next to Christian the most likely suspect was Matt Hardy.

Leaving aside the fact that a brother vs brother feud between these two was considered and rejected back when Lita was still in the picture, the ambush in that hotel was horribly mishandled, and subsequent attacks did not improve the situation.  The attacker should not have been Matt, and more, it should not have cost Jeff the title, at least not yet.

I know you're not responsible for any of that, JR.  What I am saying is, I now know that I need to get away from WWE, just as there was a time when you knew you had to get away from WCW.  That time is long overdue.  I don't blame the WWE for that; I blame myself.  I gave them way, way, way too much credit.  A mistake I won't repeat.

As for Shane vs Orton, who cares?  Just more McMahon farce.  Shane's a good high flier but that's as far as it goes.  But now it's time for ME to go.

I wouldn't call any of Shane McMahon's matches classics, but some of them have been rather entertaining.  Last night, however, was disappointing.

I found it impossible to believe that Shane could not only send Randy Orton running, but also remove two other men from the equation, without any outside assistance.  Orton should be commended for his ability to sell punches that nobody sitting at home could possibly buy.

Jim -- Have fun in Tampa at the Super Bowl.  Any plans to swing by the FCW facility there during your visit?

I concur with your analysis of The Wrestler.  It opened here in Nashville this weekend and it was a brilliant film in my estimation.

raw was good last night in im glad wwe is giving somedoy like kofi kingston a chance to be in the main event.but michel cole is awful like they need to bring j.r to raw fast.

Great call on the Royal Rumble JR!

I know that this was probably screamed at you multiple times in your headset, and you were only doing your job to regurgitate it, but I just want to say that Wrestlemania 25 is not the 25th anniversary of Wrestlemania!  The first Wrestlemania was in 1985, 24 years ago (it was not "Wrestlemania 0" after all...)

Mate, calm down. It's just entertainment. You shouldn't be getting PO'd about something that is designed to make you happy - it's not life.

Thanks for the insight JR. I enjoyed the PPV a lot. First time I've bought/watched one for many, many years and although I was a bit disappointed that Orton won the rumble it was to be expected and if the guy is creating a lot of heat with those "regular Joes", as you say, then the guy's doing his job well.

Was good to have you and The King back too. Take care.

 To the comment below mine:

I'm not a huge fan of the McMahons being involved in storylines either, but at least Vince and Shane aren't getting in the ring (for now). Plus, Vince is off-screen in this one. I'm certainly preferring this one over the Hornswoggle McMahon story last year.

Also, I can't stand CM Punk. Having homages to MMA are all well and fine (Vladimir Koslov is ok), but it's so half-assed in his character. The pre-match finger roll stolen blatantly from Wanderlei Silva and done with none of the intensity, the flailing arms when he swings an already straightened leg up for those oh-so "devastating" roundhouse kicks and his lack of inventive grappling moves when he's supposed to be schooled in jujitsu...the less I see of Punk, the better. Rey Mysterio at least has good technique when he does his Thai low kicks.

The Royal Rumble PPV was one of the best ones I've seen since last year's Wrestlemania. Swagger's title defense was a nice, straight wrestling match and Cena's did a good job of keeping the HBK storyline going in a compelling way. I also thought the Royal Rumble was fun to watch, though busy to the eyes and crowded as always.

The real gem of course, was Jeff Hardy vs. Edge. It had everything-solid technical wrestling, some extreme high flying and inventive weapon use, some great counters (Twist of Fate countering the Spear, anyone?), and Matt's heel turn was absolutely the crown jewel of the whole PPV. No one saw it coming, and it left me openmouthed. Even the 3 minute silence from you, JR, and Tazz was perfectly done.

Wow, I can't wait for Wrestlemania.

Seriously can we finally be done with Vince McMahon and his wretched family stinking up the show. I groaned last week as Vince strutted down to the ring because I know perfectly well once again WWE is going back to the same tired inane booking they've using for years. We gotta hype wrestlemania so naturally it's time to insert Vince McMahon and his crotchfruit Shane and Stephanie into storylines.

God forbid we give the ball to somebody like CM Punk to run against Randy Orton. God forbid we finally try to push some of the younger talent. No we need to devote another Pay Per View to Shane falling off stuff again. Maybe bring out the human quaalude Linda McMahon to bore the paying customers to tears and remind them it's o.k. to get up and go to the bathroom because nothing even remotely worth caring about is gonna happen as long as her mouth is open.  Seriously if Shane's last name wasn't McMahon he couldn't even work a bingo hall with his pathetic act.

The whole authority figure versus wrestler schtick has been beaten to death and it's time to move on. 1998 was fun but time marches on.

Time to bring out Stone Cold Steve Austin for yet another cup of coffee. Have him come down to the ring stunner some one, wash rinse repeat.  Time to have the Big Red Jobber Kane terrorizing someone again. Oooh look we gave him crappy horror music too. Such a pity Mick Foley jumped ship or we could have him plug his latest book only 3 people are gonna read.

But so long as The Great Unwashed keep on tuning in nothing is gonna improve.
