SmackDown This! (Jan. 22, 2009) from WWE.com

No one ever confused yours truly with the handsome, tanned, baritone Michael Buffer but please indulge me while I ask if everyone is “Ready to Rumble” this Sunday in Dee-Troit?

“The Road to Wrestlemania,” get ready to hear that a bunch this week, officially begins this Sunday at The Joe in the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match that, since 1993, has sent its winner to face the WWE Champion in the main event at WrestleMania. Now with the World Heavyweight Title representing the Raw brand, the winner of the Rumble match gets his choice of titles for which he would like to challenge.

I predict that after doing a huge, major PPV on Sunday and the subsequent Monday Night Raw, those in WWE that attend the Tuesday event in Indy will be just a “little edgy.” It should make for an interesting night in Indy.

Back in the day when only two announcers, many times the King and me, broadcast the one-hour plus Rumble match I always said it was the most daunting match to broadcast of any match of the year. I assume all three broadcast teams will be put to work for this match as it is imperative to get the Slammy Award winning, dynamic duo of Todd Grisham and Matt Striker to work other than them only broadcasting the Jack Swagger vs. Matt Hardy ECW Title bout. The fact that all three teams will be participating makes my night somewhat easier.

Did you know that only three men have won the Royal Rumble more than once and that list includes Shawn Michaels (2), Hulk Hogan (2) and Stone Cold Steve Austin (3)?

Pat Patterson is the architect of the Rumble and the HOF’er turned 68 years young this week. While we are at it, a belated Happy Birthday to Pat who is also the first IC Champion. Pat is the WWE’s undisputed karaoke champion and one of the company’s most eligible bachelors.

Historic week in America with the swearing in of the first African-American President of the United States, Barack Obama, who I hope goes down in history as not only the first of his race to be our Commander in Chief but also to be known as the president who jump-started America’s anemic economy and kept us out of unwinable wars.

Ironically, on the day President Obama was sworn in, I was in one of the garden spots of America, Stamford, Conn., hosting a Legends Roundtable discussion regarding African Americans in Wrestling. The panel was made up of WWE HOF members Tony Atlas and Dusty Rhodes along with Cowboy Bill Watts and Teddy Long. This compelling feature will air on WWE 24/7 On Demand and eventually on DVD. The Legends Roundtable DVD is a classic collection and is more than eight-hours long and is available now, I think.

J.R. , I thought that Vincent Kennedy McMahon, the czar of pro wrestling if there is such a thing, and Michael Buffer had similar facial features if  you think about it. I think Randy Orton winning the Royal Rumble is great. I don't watch pro wrestling on TV as much as I used to in the past, but I do buy the DVD sets, mostly from the WWE, but the occasional one from other companies like TNA. As for the men winning the Royal Rumble on multiple occasions, all three of them are WWE Hall of Famers or future WWE Hall of Famers. As for President Obama, he is going to need a lot of support to try to fix the financial market and auto sector collapse.  J.R.,  I think it will take a long time for USA to recover from their budget deficit, trade deficit and other financial problems.  Obviously, the recession will affect their trading partners the most, especially their major ones.   The day before the Rumble, I did manage to catch the Affliction PPV for Mixed Martial Arts, as well as the Margarito-Mosely fight in boxing.

It would be nice if people would celebrate the fact that President Obama is half-white too - the best of both worlds, as someone else had stated.  What a blessing and wonderful creation!  We have more in common than we realize.  Take care, Sir J.R. - you do fine work:)
