Enough already of coughing people, crying babies, anti-deodorites all contained in a flying cylinder known as an airplane for multiple hours. Nonetheless, travel issues aside, I am happy that WWE has had such success in their autumn, European tour and the live audience that many of you will see on Friday Night SmackDown will illustrate why so many of us enjoy traveling to the England in particular.
The “Angriest Announcer in the World,” my partner Tazz, actually landed in Manchester on Sunday so he was there an extra day and many of us barely left the hotel in downtown Manchester, the Marriott Renaissance. Tazz was in rare form when I first saw him on Monday as he was enjoying a “pint” and eating, of all things, hummus. I don’t even like bean dip so hummus is definitely out. The only salvation in keeping Tazz from beating up on the housekeeping department in our hotel is that on Sunday overnight, one TV channel played a plethora of NFL games one right after the other until something like 6 a.m.
I missed the NFL coverage but I did get to see plenty of Quincy and Malcolm in the Middle reruns before being able to watch a slew of WWE programming late Monday night, including highlights of the 1989 Survivor Series.
FTR, there are no BBQ places in Manchester than anyone could direct me to, so I reverted to authentic, English fare including one of my favorites, fish and chips, which was served with smashed peas. Ixnay the smashed peas and you’ve got a winner. No salt or pepper results in no taste and reminded me of what I perceive Gerber Baby Food still tastes like … bland.
Let me assure you that if you were somewhat shocked at Jeff Hardy’s actions last week when he got Undertaker disqualified against undefeated, No. 1 contender for the WWE title Vladimir Kozlov then you ain’t seen anything yet. The younger Hardy tangles with Undertaker in a stem-winding main event with extreme rules which essentially means that there are no rules. Considering, at times, that Tazz and I were mere feet away from some of the intense physicality, let me assure everyone on my allegiance to the Oklahoma Sooners Football team and to BBQ aficionados everywhere that this match was nasty. I still can’t believe some of the intensity, and it reminded me somewhat of a match many years ago involving HBK vs. Mankind. You will be the final judge but in my view Undertaker vs. Jeff Hardy on Friday Night SmackDown was one of the best TV matches I have seen in a long time.

Hey JR, I recently read an article by David Penzer, discussing not the businessman but the human being, called Hulk Hogan and it really made me think how can wrestlers etc dog a humanitarian like Hulk Hogan?
I have heard that Hogan can play many forms of politics in the industry to better his own career and his bank balance, sometimes at the expense of fellow wrestlers….. But isn’t that what the majority of us would do in our own professional lives? I mean if I go for a job interview or wage increase I will do my best to sell myself and tell the decision makers why I am better than the rest and try to maximize my salary package? And if that’s true than why is Hogan a bad person for doing the same? How many people would actually take a pay cut so to pay someone else? Especially someone who isn’t as good as them? Why should Hogan not use his creative control to make himself look better than his competition, to better his own marketability for future earnings? Isn’t this what Coke, Pepsi, McDonalds, Burger King etc do??
In life, I believe family is number one priority and as the bread winner you need to ensure they are financially secure as you do not know what the future holds…..especially in the volatile world of professional wrestling!!! What I am trying to say is Hulk Hogan, the businessman, has done things no different than most of us would do if we were Hulk Hogan?
On the flip side, Hogan the human being has helped numerous sick kids over the years as explained in the below insert by David Penzer. How can anyone say anything bad about this man for when it comes down to what you do for others in need, out of your own time, Hulk leaves us all for dead! While others in the industry, who might be more likely to ‘put over’ others and more friendly to the boys in the dressing room, were jet flying and limozine riding, partying with the boys, Hogan was, as his character is based on, there for his Hulkamaniacs!
Remember this, all those sick kids are Hulkamaniacs and how do you think they feel when their hero who visited them in hospital looses a match???
DAVID PENZER ARTICLE:
“After the taping, a different young man in a wheelchair stopped me in the lobby of the hotel and said how touched he was by the event. He also said to me that, being handicapped since birth, he had a wish a few years ago to meet Hulk Hogan. He said that not only did he get to meet Hulk but Hulk gave him his personal email address and they still remain in contact.
I, personally, have seen this same thing happen numerous times while working with Terry Bollea. Anyone who has worked with him, whether they like him or hate him, would have to admit that Terry/Hulk is well known within the industry for touching more children and families lives who are suffering. The question is, where was TMZ and the media during those touching moments? The answer is there was no press allowed per Hulk’s orders.
It is very easy to kick a person or family when they are down. The Bollea Family have certainly had their share of down times recently. They have made some mistakes and said some things I am sure they wish that they can take back. No one knows how they would react or what they would say if they were going through the same situation that Hulk, Linda, Nick, and Brooke are going through. For sure, nobody would want those words and reactions being played to the public.
Those who condemn Hulk Hogan and his Family should remember the hundreds if not thousands of people and families that Hulk has touched in 30 years and give the guy bit of a break dealing with his current issues.”
Thanks,
David Penzer
