Steiners Historic Tag Bout..Bragging Rights Suprises?..HBK Update..Brock Lesnar..Last Wk'End For Free Shipping

It's a rainy Friday in Norman but it's going to be an exciting weekend nonetheless. Miles to go before I sleep for this die hard sports fan.

Our webmaster is working diligently on our on line store and we should have the new look, new pricing, new shipping info done by the first of the week. I can accurately say that if you are keen on free shipping that you order before Monday.

We're now working on the label and the FDA info for the new 'JR's Main Event Mustard' which we will be adding to the site in time for your holiday shopping. The product is spot on and delicious and is a very healthy condiment. I'm hooked on it. Great on a turkey sandwich among many other uses.

Heading to the Oklahoma vs. Missouri showdown of unbeaten teams in the Big 12 in Columbia on Saturday night on ABC. I'll be the dude in the black hat on the Sooner Sideline sweating it out in hopes that Oklahoma can escape Columbia with a win. Avoiding turnovers and senseless penalties likely will be the key for a game OU is favored by 3 or so points. The table is certainly set however for a Tiger upset of the BCS #1 ranked Sooners.

Sunday morning I'm off to Minneapolis to attend the WWE Bragging Rights PPV. It's always nice to reconnect with old friends at WWE PPV's. Bragging Rights has an unpredictable air to it in my opinion. Wouldn't it be a shocker if Wade Barrett upset Randy Orton via John Cena assisting to become one of the most unlikely WWE Champions ever? That would certainly be a departure from the norm and launch a variety of potential, new storylines.

The announcers will be challenged to tell a viable story in the 'Buried Alive' match featuring the Undertaker vs. Kane for the World's Title. Speaking from experience, these novelty bouts are tough to call for any broadcaster as one really has to let the match come to them and try and embellish what is seen. I like Kane in this one.

Got an email from a fan who had just watched a bout from 1991 between the Steiner Brothers vs. Hase and Sasaki from Tokyo that I called with Tony Schiavone as I recall.  Great tag team match, very athletically executed and the four men told a great story. Check it out some time as it is arguably as good a tag bout as I can remember seeing in the 90's. I always thought Hase was one of the best Japanese wrestlers that I ever saw.

My first trip to Japan was memorable especially when one is traveling with Ric Flair and the Horsemen. Take my word for it, never a dull moment. Our Japanese hosts were gracious and let's just say that I met some very intriguing 'sponsors' during that week. I do remember getting a ride back to the hotel from a late night function in a Rolls Royce convertible that the driver and body guard insisted that we travel with the top down. That's what their boss wanted and I had no argument. Felt like I was in a scene from a Japanese produced episode of 'The Sopranos.'

Got a great call earlier this week from Shawn Michaels and we spent some time catching up on a variety of things. HBK is happy, healthy and not missing the wrestling business at this time. Shawn is busy working on a hunting show for the Outdoor Life Network, I think, that will likely begin airing next year. We discussed some upcoming hunts and yours truly night actually go on one of these taped hunts somewhere down the road. I might be better suited to be the camp 'cook' as my hunting skills aren't at the level of say a Brock Lesnar, Steve Austin, or Dusty Rhodes. But the 'camp fire' talk would be entertaining.

Speaking of Austin, some fans have emailed me and adamantly feel that the ideal match for the Undertaker to have at WM30 would be Austin vs. Taker. WM30?? Sounds provocative on paper but it's not going to happen. I'm much more interested in who Taker is going to face at WM27 which appears to be a wide open matter. Steve will generally always say the old wrestler cliché of "Never say never" when asked about another match but no one would be more shocked than me to ever see Austin don his tights again. What does he have left to prove plus Austin is well on his way to establishing himself in Hollywood as an action adventure movie star.  Plus, would you really want Stone Cold to return to Wrestlemania and lose because the smart money is on Taker NEVER losing a Wrestlemania bout? And never means never.

Paul Heyman's EA Sports work has been impressive including the latest piece that Paul voiced over. MMA, in general, can use all the help they can gather from those who know how to market and make stars via using vignettes, etc.

Heyman is in Anaheim with Brock Lesnar as we speak in preparation for the Lesnar-Velásquez UFC Heavyweight Title Bout on PPV Saturday night. I'll be hoping that my Blackberry can get reception during the OU-Mizzou game. Perhaps some of you that will be watching the fight can keep me abreast via Twitter @JRsBBQ.

I don't know Cain Velásquez but I have great respect for his body of work, athleticism, and work ethic. Velásquez is seemingly fighting for an admirable cause that some consider even greater than winning the coveted UFC heavyweight Title and the financial rewards that accompany such. Becoming the first Hispanic, UFC Heavyweight Champion is an admirable goal and with that comes a great deal of pressure. For my money, simply stepping into the Octagon against Lesnar with the express purpose of attempting to take away the magnificent athlete's livelihood should be pressure enough.

Even though I do not personally know Cain Velásquez,  I do know Brock Lesnar...very well. In over four decades of being around world class athletes in a variety of arenas, I have never encountered an athlete quite like Brock Lesnar. Unless one is privileged enough to be around Lesnar on a somewhat regular basis as I was when he was in WWE, one cannot appreciate how freakishly quick, sudden may actually be a better description, and explosive this God gifted athlete truly is. Now that Brock's health is good, and who knows how many fights Brock actually had when he wasn't healthy and didn't even know it, and his 'walking around weight' is 265, the UFC heavyweight limit, my instincts say that we haven't even come close to seeing the best of Lesnar as of yet.

The biggest thing that Brock has going for him though isn't his physical make up, his brute strength, the refined, amateur wrestling skills, or even his ability to weather seemingly insurmountable storms such as he did against Shane Carwin their memorable first round.

Brock Lesnar's greatest gifts are his mental approach to competing. No matter if it was in OVW in Louisville where Brock went to learn the art form of pro wrestling, grinding it out in a wrestling room in his amateur days, or having the drive to be the best WWE entertainer LONG before he should have been, Brock Lesnar pushes himself harder than any other man or entity ever could.

Plus, Lesnar is a hunter. He loves to track and harvest big game. Hunting and the strategy of a hunt seems to be in the South Dakota country boy's DNA. Saturday night Brock Lesnar goes hunting and his 'prey' is a formidable animal. Lesnar's heart and will to win will hopefully allow the vaunted, UFC Champion to reap a successful harvest in a physical war that will take an enormous toll on both hunter and the hunted. Great hunters are strategists who have no issues closing the deal with their prey finds itself in the hunter's cross hairs. Good luck Brock on Saturday night.  I'm pulling for you.

Be sure and say hello if our paths cross this weekend whether it be at the OU game or at Bragging Rights on PPV.

BTW I've updated your Q&A's here on the site. New dirt.

Hey JR.

Been a Lesnar fan from the days of his run in the WWE (admittedly I don't watch much wwe nowadays as the "PG" stuff just isn't for me) and I'm still shocked at how easily he got dominated by the smaller Velasquez Saturday night.

I knew going in that Brock would have a fight on his hands since Cain is nobody's doormat but what I saw in the cage was hard to swallow.  Looking at the Carwin fight and now this one, its no rocket science to figure out that the biggest holes in Lesnar's game right now is (a) very poor striking skills and (b) he just seems to panick when he gets hit.  Instead of trading punches or at least attempting to counter punch the guy throwing at him he turns away, turtles up and generally loses sight of whatever game plan his coaches had for him going in.

If Lesnar wants to get back on the winning trail against the elites of the HW division (and you can bet your last dollar they watched this and the Carwin fight and thus would be zeroing in on Brock's weaknesses) he is going to have to do something drastic with his training regiment such as switching camps (a Greg Jackson would do wonders with him).

Here's hoping that Lesnar's shakes off this loss (after all, its really no shame to lose in MMA) and comes back stronger than ever !

Saturday night could not have been more perfect. Two perfect storms combining into one hell of a bad night for Mr. Slobberknocker. First the mighty sooners rather than laters go lose guaranteeing that they won't be playing for a national title and then Brock Lesnar does his best Iron Mike Sharpe impersonation and gets destroyed in his ufc title defense. I hate to say it but I think if you signed with TNA when you had the chance and not take a part time gig with wwe this would not have happened. It might be acting slow but the curse is alive and well!!!!!!! On that note, you have a wonderful day . Can't wait until the wwe comes out witth the "where are they now" feauture on you

Thanks SO much...when can I expect your next order for product?

Of course not taking anything away form Cain's victory. He's obivously better than everybody who has fought Brock before. And I also like his actions-speak-louder than words attitude. No flamboyant fighter.

There are a couple of things. First of all Brock is a great ahtlete and what he did in a short amount of time is incredible. He's training MMA since 2006. When you take away the time when had the disease, it's not even 4 years.

That beeing said, I don't think he ever fully recovered from the disease. Of course Carwin and Velasquez are strong, but Brock didn't look the same in those fights. Am I the only one who sees it?

Second, Brock is not really a mixed martial artist yet and I don't know if he ever will become one. That's what I always said. He's not comfortable on his feet.

Cain Velasquez - not really a good striker himself - beat up Brock with his hands even though Cain's striking is based on conditioning and basic technique. So everyone who can make Brock lose his balance and overview, will beat him.

A sidenote for everyone who didn't notice: Cain Velasquez is currently the no. 1 ranked heavyweight in the world. Take a look at his list. He's ahead of Overeem and the great Fedor.

What happened to your boy Lesnar, JR?

Brock lost...thanks for asking.

If Brock defeats Cain tonight, I don't see anyone in the UFC who can take the belt away from away. Junior Dos Santos won't be much of a challenge for Brock.

That's good and bad: Good for Brock because he cleaned out the HW division in the UFC. Bad for the UFC because there is nobody who can seriously challenge Brock.

The two men who can knock out Brock  Lesnar are out of the UFC: Alistair Overeem and Fedor Emelianenko.

Greetings and Salutations, J. R.!!!!

How's everybody's favorite "Boomer Sooner" doing so far this "Frantic Friday" Afternoon?  I hope things are going great for you and your family so far, as we get ready for this Sunday night's Bragging Rights pay-per-view event, live from the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of Bragging Rights, I would like to know your predictions on who you think will win the following contests this Sunday night:

- The 7-on-7 "Raw"-versus-"SmackDown" Bragging Rights Tag Team Elimination Match:

TEAM "RAW" (Team Captain The Miz, Ron "R-Truth" Killings, John Morrison, Sheamus, Santino Marella, C. M. Punk, and Ezekiel Jackson)

vs.

TEAM "SMACKDOWN" (Team Captain The Big Show, Rey Mysterio, Jr,. Alberto Del Rio, Jack Swagger, Tyler Reks, Kofi Kingston, and Edge)

- The "Raw"-versus-"SmackDown" Bragging Rights Champion-versus-Champion Match:

Reigning United States Champion DANIEL BRYAN

vs.

Reigning Intercontinental Champion DOLPH ZIGGLER

- The Unified Divas Championship Match:

MICHELLE McCOOL or LAYLA EL

vs.

NATALYA NEIDHART

- The Buried Alive Match for the World Heavyweight Championship:

KANE (with Paul Bearer)

vs.

THE UNDERTAKER

- W.W.E. Championship Match:

RANDY ORTON

vs.

WADE BARRETT (with John Cena)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like your take on Michael Cole's somewhat odd behavior these days.  I had the opportunity to watch "Raw" a couple of weeks ago, and it seems the "King of Coleslaw" is letting his personal issues with the such Superstars as  Daniel Bryan, Goldust, and Aksana get in the way of being an objective, impartial, respected play-by-play announcer.

Though I may need to lighten up and try not to take things so seriously, I'm concerned that Michael may be "caving in" to the infamous "dark side" en route to become the most hated announcer in W.W.E. history.... if not in professional wrestling today.

While I would like to give the 13-year veteran the benefit of the doubt and hope he can realize the error of his ways now while he still can, even the most die-hard W.W.E. fan must wonder if Cole may be sporting a Nexus T-shirt before long.  After all, as Mr. McMahon has always been fond of saying, "Anything Can Happen in the W.W.E.", nd the possibility of Cole receiving the loudest and most passionate round of boos and catcalls from the W.W.E. is most definitely one of them.  We'll see how this one plays out in upcoming weeks and months.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And finally, while watching the three-disc "Allied Powers:  The World's Greatest Tag Teams" DVD release a number of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to watch the Steiner Brothers-versus-Kensuke Sasaki and Hiro Hase I.W.G.P. Tag Team Championship Match from the W.C.W. Japan Supershow '91, and I don't mind telling you, it was one of the best tag team bouts I've had the honor and pleasure of seeing, over and over again.

Both tandems were the epitome of what great tag team wrestling action and compelling storytelling are all about, and to see the Steiners and Sasaki and Hase put forth a five-star performance in the ring is true sight to see.  This match ranks as one of my all-time favorite tag team classics, and to relive the emotion and passion these magnificent athletes brought to the table that night is nothing short of spectacular, no ifs, ands, or Frankensteiners about it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, Jim, that's about it for me right now.  Hope to hear from you soon.

C-Ya Later and Have a Safe and Enjoyable "Bragging Rights" Weekend.

Hang Tough.... Stay Strong.... Always Believe.

B-Well and Take Care, my friend.

Best Regards,

Eddie-Boy

Hi JR,

Been a fan of the WWE for at least 20 years and have seen the many rises and changes throughout (and student of the history as well).  I have two questions that pertain to the end as 1 topic.

I've noticed a decline on the focus of Tag Teams and The Interncontinental (or US) Championships throughout recent years.  It seems the titles do not have much pull as the used to back in the Curt Henning, Bret Hart,  Rick Rude and Ultimate Warrior era's (Honky Tonk Man too!).  Actually in all due respect it was sooner as there was Razor Ramon, HBK and The Rock vs. Triple H amongst other feuds. As far as tag teams go - the most recent feuds that I remember being epic were when the Dudleys, Hardy's, Edge and Christian all were at war (and inbetween had a few jobbers like the Headbangers).

Why do you feel the sudden fall in popularity or focus is on these titles?WWE has teams that have potential but are broken up so quickly (Ex: New Hart Foundation seems to be going out the door any day now) and lack of story depth/rivalry when it comes to both titles.

Hope this question make sense.  Thanks for the time.
