Summerslam....Cappotelli...The Brain...more

Posted in:

Speaking specifically for the Smackdown bouts and the PPV in general, I enjoyed Summerslam. The Hell in a Cell match felt like an instant classic. The Undertaker and Edge waged a physical war. These two syperstars told an epic story and it certainly ranks near the top of any HIAC match I have ever broadcast. For me a great match needs a strong storyline and effort and this match definately had those elements in place. Not sure when we might see Edge again after this conflict but his star is brighter than ever. As far as 'Taker is concerned, who's been better for the long haul? No one in the WWE for my money. The WWE Title bout far exceeded my expectations. HHH wrestled a smart match and prooved again why he is the WWE Champion. Khali is an unique opponent and the match was better than many expected all things considered. Jeff Hardy vs. MVP was an excellent start to the PPV. Hardy now has issues w/ MVP and U.S. Champion Shelton Benjamin. We might even see MVP vs Benjamin some day. Jeff is without question one of the top tier most popular stars in all the WWE. Sure glad these men are on S'Down. Now is their time to continue to raise their games. The HBK/Rebecca/Jericho business as hellaciously compelling. Amazing stuff. Reminded me of a big time, old school incident. Just outstanding.

Cena-Batista raised their games in Indy and the Batista victory surprised me. It will be interesting to see where this pairing goes next. Enjoyed seeing Matt Cappotelli Sunday who looked great after battling brain cancer for seemingly the longest time. What a great kid who has endured what no one would ever wish on their worst enemy. Matt has taken tons of chemo and radiation and at this time the tumor looks non existent. Matt gets a MRI every other month to monitor any growth of the tumor. I can't put into words how much I admire Matt's courage and positive frame of mind. I also heard that Bobby Heenan was doing better and is going thru speech therapy and watching plenty of baseball on TV. I love Bobby like a brother and he is one of my all time favorite people. I have never seen any one in the biz w/ so much all around talent as Bobby which includes wrestling, managing, and broadcasting. "The Brain" is one of a kind. I made it to the Quad Cities where Tuesday we will tape what should be a very interesting Friday Night Smackdown. Until then, I'm hooked on the Little League World Series, one of the purest forms of sports on TV. Finally, it was great seeing my old partner The King at S'Slam as we rode together Sunday. The "band was back together" for a short while. My new broadcast partner, Tazz, did a super job carrying yours truly in Indy. Between Tazz' Brooklyn accent and my Oklahoma drawl, no one else will sound like us and we will likely give the closed captioning folks hell. :)

SummerSlam was amazing, even though I'd have loved better a more spectacular entrance for The Undertaker, something bigger.

I believe that HBK will soon go after Y2J, and I'm curious about the match they will compete in, I mean we've just had Hell In A Cell that would have been perfect to say the last word on their rivalry, do you think that a particularly violent specialty match is suitable for their feuds? I think that HBK's feelings towards Y2J can't be expected under ordinary rules, it has to be a No DQ, maybe Last Man Standing or I Quit!

I'm also looking forward to know who's going after HHH now (The Big Show?) and how Edge will recover, especially mentally, from the Hell In A Cell!

Hey J.R., if in a fantasy scenario you were to go back to doing colour commentary, then who do you think would mesh the best with you as a play-by-play announcer?

Summerslam was great!! I love Santino's character!! he is funny, and the glamazon, is just delicious!! the Cena-Batista match could have been scratched...Taker and Edge was the best match of the night no doubt, hands down! HHH and Khali? that shouldnt have ever happened, cant they bring the Big Show in for that one? oh well, HHH is an excellent wrestler, and a character to lean on...all this stuff was great, great great...but, there was someone that could have made it better...MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE!!! Yep, I said it!! if Hulk Hogan can still wrestler with his fake hips (which he did again randy orton, summerslam 2006) Why cant Savage come back and wrestle? Why is he not in the hall of fame? Randy Savage is one of the greatest wrestlers ever, and he is not in the hall of fame?? dang, thats crazy!!

Wrestlemania 25...make it happen J.R.!!! macho man randy savage!! Sherri was inducted, and elizabeth was inducted...and the reason they were even on the map, was randy savage!!

By the way J.R. you are definitely the voice of wrestling these days!! i enjoy hearing you broadcast wrestling...i just wished they wouldnt have drafted you to smackdown!!

Things in the WWE have been going pretty well since the draft, loving the new matchups and rivalries, although do you think that there is a lack of strong heels on Raw?

Y2J has elevated himself to the number one guy probably right now and there is also JBL but as far as main event heels go I think they could use some more. What about you JR? Great website by the way!

Summerslam = Predictable

Wow. The whole HBK/Chris/Rebecca issue just put a fire in so many people. I mean, their promos and confrontations as of lately have been gut wrenching. You can feel the intensity and I too was just floored when Chris hit Rebecca. So I have a football question for you. How do you think Bret Farve will do on his new team? And do you think it was a smart move for him?

Jeff is consistently watchable, and demands attention from all segments of the fan base. Although it does feel a little bit like MVP has made the hardy boys his bitch. Punk vs JBL was better than I thought it would be, but HHH vs Khali was horrible. On this one PPV, it did seem like the title matches were less important. Shouldn't the title matches have been Batista vs Cena and Taker vs Edge if they got all the hype? Its fair to say those bouts didn't NEED the title, but it could have helped. Also don't you think HHH has evolved into a cross between the Ultimate Warrior and HBK (not a bad thing!)

Kiaora JR Well, Summerslam was what I expected.... full of hype and deliverance. I didnt expect MVP or Batista to win. (lost points on those matches) Nor did it even enter my mind that Jericho would smash HBK's wife (nearly fell off my chair)!!!!! Good gritty storyline there. Thank you Jr for letting us have our say. JR...I've been meaning to post this for a while, just to see what your input would be. It was recently announced that the legendary Philadelphia Spectrum will be torn down in 2009. The Flyers and Sixers both have games scheduled, during the upcoming seasons. Do you think the higher ups in the WWE have considered holding an event there? Considering all the pro wrestling history the building has I would think one last event would be appropriate. Also every time my friend and I sit inside Licoln Financial Field for an Eagles game...we can't help but think how cool it would be for the WWE to hold an event there. Why not a July 4th show? WWE in the Birthplace of our Nation on July 4th inside a 65k+ Stadium, it's nice to imagine. Go Birds!!! Kurt Sjolund

SummerSlam was awesome! :D
