Tuesday Update..Jack Brisco Memories...Random Thoughts..FREE, autographed photo with BBQ orders

Thanks for stopping by as we appreciate your visit and your business. Lots of things are in the works and some unique days lie ahead. Stay tuned.

I had a great conversation this morning with Ric Flair about our late friend Jack Brisco.

Jack was one of Ric's mentors when Ric was preparing to become the traveling, NWA Champion. We both plan on attending Jack's services which will likely be next week in Tampa.

I have been asked to speak at the service which is honestly one of the biggest honors of my life.

Jack Brisco was so similar to another Oklahoma, Native American, the greatest, American born athlete ever, Jim Thorpe.

Jack won 3 state high school wrestling titles, a state high jump championship, and was all state in football.

At Oklahoma State Jack lost one match that being the championship match at the NCAA Tournament Jack's first year on the varsity as a sophomore. In Jack's final season at OSU, his junior year, he was undefeated, won the NCAA title at 191 pounds, and earned All American honors for the 2nd consecutive year.

Like Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar, Jack Brisco went from the amateurs to the pros seamlessly. Until Kurt came along, no amateur made the transition as easily as Jack.

Isn't it ironic that four of the NWA's most honored champions, Jack Brisco, Harley Race, and Dory and Terry Funk were all left handed?

Jack never relied on punching, kicking or bleeding to tell a compelling and exciting story. Nor did he have to yell and scream on his promos to make a point.

Jack's rich, baritone voice may be silenced for now but his memory will never die. I vividly remember my first meal with Jack as if it were yesterday. I felt like the Okie that I am and had been invited to sit at the grown up table for Thanksgiving supper.

Jack Brisco was the most naturally gifted athlete to ever be honored with the NWA Championship.

I enjoyed Raw Monday night...William Shatner hit it out of the park and Ol Bill has still got it. Natural timing and a feel for comedy and for entertaining. I think he might have become my favorite Raw guest host w/ last night's performance.

Edge made an impactful return to WWE indy at the Rumble and made yet another impact Monday night with his verbal skills, adding a provocative twist to his WM26 future, and a well timed spear.

HBK's highway to WM26 seemed to become a gravel road Monday night as it's obvious that Shawn Michaels is "obsessed" with facing the Undertaker at 'Mania again. If or how Shawn gets there should make for some intriguing TV over the next few weeks. It's obvious that many fans want the ultimate return match but do we always get what we want?

The Elimination Chamber qualifying matches made every bout have a distinct flavor and a reason for the match occurring.

Kudos to WWE for so quickly putting together the Jack Brisco tribute video for Raw Monday night. I was moved by it and I know that the Brisco Family appreciated it. I talked to Gerald today and he was so pleased to see his late, big brother honored in that manner.

With the way Raw left the air,  I'm very curious as to how Bret Hart will attempt to orchestrate his physical retribution on Mr. McMahon. Someone will likely have hell to pay before all is said and done. The show closer left me wanting to see more of this saga.

Today is the last day to order WWE The Music from Amazon for only $3.99. This hot offer ends at midnight.

Read where some old school fans really enjoyed watching Jerry Lawler and Dennis Condrey wrestle each other a week or so ago at an indy event in Alabama. They are two, old pros who have mastered their craft.

Been busy signing photos that we include FREE in many of our affordable packages in our on line store. Some new, big things are headed your way there.

As I said earlier, interesting days lie ahead on many horizons and they are likely not what some are thinking.

We had a record setting January sales wise here on line and February is starting off well. Thanks to those who keep Ol J.R. in your 'fridge.

Come back and see us.

Boomer Sooner!

P.S. I was all over my Twittering business during Raw. Follow me there at http://twitter.com/JRsBBQ.

P.S.S. I don't know what in the hell I've done while writing this to add the underlining...but I apologize.

Farewell to another one of the greats in wrestling, Jack Brisco.  I was privileged to watch Jack in many of his championship matches.  He was truly one of the best of all times.

I wonder how many of the so-called superstars of this era will be remembered in twenty or thirty years.

Very saddened to hear about Jack's passing. One of the first cards I ever attended at the Mid-South Coliseum featured three former NWA champions in the main event (which was a rarity in the days when only a select fraternity got to carry the prestigious honor of NWA titlist): Jerry Lawler teaming with Brisco vs. the Funks on May 18, 1981.

Years before, Brisco made several appearances defending his NWA laurels in Memphis, including a defense against his childhood idol, Lou Thesz, on Oct. 8, 1973.

In 1974, Memphis promoter Jerry Jarrett began building up rising-star Jerry Lawler as a serious contender to Brisco’s NWA championship. Along with his legendary feud with Jackie Fargo, Lawler’s Quest for the Title program and matches with Brisco established the King as a singles star in the eyes of Memphis fans.

In a telephone interview with me Monday morning, Lawler credited Brisco as one of the top three workers he faced in Memphis.

“Jack was in that same class as Dory Funk Jr. and Nick Bockwinkel,” he says. “He was so smooth inside the ring. Jack never rushed things; he never got flustered and always took his time in building a match. Just a pleasure to work with. He made it appear that even a local kid like me could beat the World champion. He was the first World champion I ever faced in Memphis, which really was the start of the program that we always went back to, with me chasing the belt. All the NWA champions of that era were great—Terry Funk, Harley Race–but Jack was special. Because of his amateur background, he truly carried himself like a sportsman, which added to the prestige of the NWA title.”

Rest easy, champ.

Where Memphis Wrestling Lives: "It's finger-breakin' good!" --Jerry "the King" Lawler

I agree about how good Shatner was - his "Singing WWE Theme Songs" was just hilarious - I don't know if he was better than Bob Barker, but he was way up there.  And the show overall was very very good, the best RAW that I'd seen in quite a while.

I'm glad to see Edge back - the man is one of the best talkers in the company and sells his storylines and physical encounters well also.

In contrast, I tried watching ECW tonight to see what Mr McMahon had to say - I couldn't get past the atrocious opening "comedy" -  that was some heinous crap!  I'm watching Frazier re-runs instead.

I was watching my Rise and Fall of the WCW DVD today and was thinking, my the old days were great. I miss the long match that tells a story instead of slamming as many high spots into a few minutes. Also thought we never see the test of strength anymore to set things up. When was the last time you remember seeing one? I said all that to say Mr Brisco was a man who paved the way for wrestling and will be missed.
