Tuesday Update...JR at Norman Homeland Stores This Saturday...RAW thoughts...Ventura Might Be Right

Posted in:

Feels as if winter is finally thinking about paying us a visit here in Oklahoma even though our "winters" are usually relatively mild. It sure beats living through the winters in the Nutmeg State...in all due respect.

Keep those on line orders coming as we are hoping to make this December a record month for sales on our website and we can accomplish our goal with your help.

BBQ'ed Random Thoughts.....

I'll be making two in store appearances this Saturday in Norman with our friends at Homeland Grocery Stores in support of them carrying our BBQ Sauces, Ketchup, Beef Jerky and our Cookbook. I will be signing these items and hope that you will drop by and say "howdy" if you are in the vicinity. From 10 a.m. until noon I will be at the Homeland located at 2600 Robinson and then from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. I will be at the Homeland located at 1251 Alameda. Come on by if you can.

In another Oklahoma matter, tickets for the Monday Night Raw in OKC on March 1 go on sale on January 16.

Raw will be down the road in Dallas this coming Monday and the wrestlers and staff will be enjoying the catering of J.R.'s Family BBQ. I am not planning on making the 5 or 6 hour round trip drive but our great food will be there which is likely a more popular choice.

Baltimore Raw Thoughts:

I felt the show needed more bell to bell wrestling. Only two bouts in the two hours stayed with me....Kofi vs. Orton and HHH vs. Jericho.

Good to see that Kofi is remaining relevant. Kingston's growth continues. I don't get too wrapped up in wins and losses.

Sheamus did not lose any of his "steam." That was a positive. Too much negative is being made of Sheamus vs. Cena at the TLC PPV. WWE has to try and elevate new talents and Sheamus is getting a shot. He's a tough guy who works hard. Why shouldn't Sheamus be given a shot before he's condemned? Let's see how his match goes with Cena on PPV before all the "internet experts" anoint this pairing as a failure.

The theory is to get new bodies in the main event mix. It seems like it is damned if one does and damned if one doesn't these days with who gets the nudge to the upper regions of the cards. That just too much negativity. That's exactly why I delete so many emails as they are either overtly negative from start to finish thus depressing to read or they are way too long.

As I predicted, Verne Troyer had a helluva time following Jesse Ventura who was a hit last week as guest Raw G.M. The tool-like Mark Cuban will likely do a fine job of filling the guest G.M. slot next week in the ACC in Dallas. I wonder if Cuban will like or dislike HBK who is a huge San Antonio Spurs fan?

The guest commentary aspect of the HHH-Jericho bout added to the presentation. Fresh voices, different levels of emotion, etc are nice additions to the normal bill of fare at any announce table.

Jesse Ventura has been making the rounds promoting his new TV show "Conspiracy Theory" which debuts on truTV Wednesday night. (Should I watch Dog the Bounty Hunter or The Governor?) Jesse has always been outspoken especially about wrestlers having a union which will likely never happen. I'm not saying that a union would or would not help wrestlers because I've never been in a union. I'm not against the idea for the  record.  Nonetheless it doesn't matter what I think about unions because all I know is that wrestlers can't unanimously agree on what to order at JR's BBQ much less trust one of their peers with navigating the seas of negotiating for new money, better benefits, etc. I do think that Jesse does make some valid points and that the biz needs to undergo many changes but forming a union isn't necessarily the cure all. Providing wrestlers with more recovery time IE a somewhat reduced travel schedule, building more roster depth, doing more financial planning education which includes tax planning and estate planning, and establishing a zero tolerance for drug abuse are among the things that would perhaps go on my personal wish list of things to help wrestling.

We've updated the Q&A section again since yesterday so check it out if you choose. If you're getting your questions deleted they're generally either too long, repetitive or they contain so many misspelled words that I'm embarrassed to print them. Don't all computers have spell check?

If I had a vote for the Heisman Trophy, I would be leaning toward Texas QB Colt McCoy. This weekend's CFB action will likely decide the Heisman winner.

I'm still thinking Florida and Tebow to narrowly beat Alabama but I'm a quasi-Bama fan. I would prefer to see 'Bama win but that still doesn't make me a Nick Saban guy. Confused yet?

Be wary of loading up on Texas and giving a truck load of points against Nebraska in the Big 12 Title game. Yes, I think UT will win but will not blow out the 'Huskers due to Nebraska's stout defense and the Pelini brothers ability to defensively put together a great game plan.

Remember that the deadline for our 1560 The Game Blitz package along with our personalized JR's Cookbooks is December 12. Speaking of www.1560thegame.com  you can hear me this Wednesday with Sean and John around 4:55 or 5 p.m. central time via their website for free if you live outside Houston or any time on their pod-cast. BTW the 1560 The Game package in our on line store is not a misprint...it's $15.60 including FREE SHIPPING until December 12. All our other offers will remain past December 12 but at some point we can't guarantee that you will receive your shipments prior to the targeted holidays.

Yours truly knew over the weekend that OU coach Bob Stoops wasn't a candidate for the Notre Dame football job. However, ESPN's Adam Schefter went with the story as fact and then had to wipe the egg off his face and fade the heat to his "source." Schefter came off like a kid running a wrestling website and cutting and pasting other's stories and fabricating things. BTW Coach Stoops is in San Diego today recruiting and will remain in California for most of the week making in home visits with key recruits.

I read an interesting article written by Mark Madden recently where he addressed the ridiculous notion that some fans think that by Hogan and Flair wrestling a few matches that it will "ruin" the two, WWE Hall of Famers legacies. Madden is right...that theory is a load of fertilizer. I don't think either veteran should wrestle much at all but, occasionally, under the right circumstances won't hurt a thing if they are both physically up to it.

This is another wrestling topic that is WAY over thought much like the production of many wrestling TV shows.

I hope that you head over to the on line store and place an order and we will do our best to get it to you within a few days.

Boomer Sooner!

Jr.Can you tell Stone Cold  Steve Austin Happy  Birthday... from his NO.1# little fans from ky...

I find it rediculous at best that when the WWE tries to listen to it's hardcore wrestling fans, Which is  a rarity to say the least, they can't win for losing. Most of Cenas fans consist of kids or females. No real wrestler like myself, or most hardcore wrestling fans want to see John be the champ over and over. Now I dont have a thing against Cena, I dont care about the fact he only has 10 moves, Hell stone cold did too, and he was the biggest star in the last 20 years to hit a wrestling ring. Cena is just marketed for kids, (who have parents that will drop big money on his merchandise, or women who think he is hot and will do the same.) So, in comes Sheamus. A heal yes, but  a person as deserving as any other newcommer to get a shot at the title.  I can think of  more wrestlers than I have fingers and toes, who yes I love dearly, but enough is enough. I am sick of seeing them dominate TV. Cena needs to lose the title, and not win the rematch. No more Cena or Orton, or HHH for a long, long time.  It is time for a change, So why when chants of "Cena sucks" dominated Survivor Series, and most arenas and it is obvious we are sick of seeing the same old same olds having titles, why not stop Griping when WWE finally listens and gives someone else a shot. I seriously doubt Sheamus will win at TLC, again he can't sell merchandise yet, but my God think of the possabilities of a heal run for a bit, maybe to be knocked off by kofi kingston one day. The possabilities of new talent are endless. Why have new talent/wrestlers if nobody wants them to win a title? I think Cena, HHH, Orton should take a lesson from Undertaker. He sells out arenas, works when he wants to, and holds titles as long as he sees fit, he doesn't care about putting people over that deserve it.

Face it, it will be hard to see any younger talents get titles as long as the guys on TV now are part of Vinces family or have to much stroke with Vince, or sell to much merchandise. We the fans control wrestling. We do, so maybe we should start doing just that. Stop buying  the merchandise of these 10 time title holders and you will see someone else get a chance to rise up. The champs of today will age, and can't keep this pace of forever. The time for change is at hand, and it is in our hands as fans to make it happen.

Just my rant on it.

My Best,

-Matt.

I just want to say that you are too right, J.R.!  I happen to be a big fan of Sheamus and was impressed by his ability from the moment I first saw him. I was a bit taken aback at how WWE "fans" responded to his title shot opportunity online. They kept focusing on his appearance as though that were equal to some ability, talked ad nauseum about supposed "backstage politics", and refused to check out his ECW or FCW matches to actually see what he was capable of. All they wanted to do was complain that their favorites didn't get the shot. As a wrestling fan, I like all the wrestlers in some way or another and I think that it's disgusting that people react in such a way when it's a nice change for someone "new" to get a chance (something many of them had complained about not happening). I just can't understand why people can't respect any wrestler that works hard, whether they like them or not.

I am a "friend" and fan of Florida Championship Wrestling, and I have been following Sheamus' career for a couple of years now. I have seen him progress to a PPV calibur talent before ever stepping foot in front of a WWE camera. He is a hard worker, a team player, and possesses first class charachter when the cameras are off. I feel like he has earned the match and I am looking forward to watch TLC to see if Sheamus can put on the "PPV Main Event" I think he is capable of...

Nice blog, I hope you can disregard the negativity as those who tend to try to question and audit others actions often can't deal with it at all when the roles are reversed.

I'm with you on giving Sheamus/Cena a chance as well. If they don't try some new combinations, things will get stale. You can only do "draft switches/trades" so many times before you run out of matchups. Worst thing happens is it's a one and done. It's going to end with a table spot so there will be at least one "ooh and ahh" moment for the crowd at minimum. The Raw 2 weeks ago was great about the new matchups (with a little nudge to the Hart/DX grudge as well).

As crazy as this is to say, I've learned to appreicate the new ECW for what it is as well (which I thought would be impossible). Lots of guys who start on the show are really ending up on Raw/Smackdown and making a dent. And most of the vets are solid... Chistian + Shelton in a ladder match = Show-stealer!

Not saying everything is perfect, I hat many aspects of the shows, but there has to be room for some optimism here. Get better man!

Hello J.R.-

I wanted to say get better soon, I hope we will see you on Raw w/ Lawler again someday.  I have a question: Is your bbq sauce gluten free? I guess a better way to ask is what are the ingredients? I'm from Norman & frequent your restaraunt, & I have an autistic daughter on the gf/cf diet & would  like to know if she can have your sauce. Also, tell Jan hello.I have met her several times...( she shops at the place where I work ,occasionally). She is such a sweetie!!! . I hope someday to finally meet you & Stone Cold Steve Austin. I have his book & your cookbook as well. I'd love to get them signed someday. Anyways, I have watched WWE since I was born (1977) & always will. Take care. Get better soon.God Bless!!!!!

JR.  I wish you would go to TNA...  I agree with Logan on TNA you would make them a great announcer...

I'm willing to give Sheamus some rope, at least I'm trying to.  He looks like a decent talent and I have no problem with raising new talent and giving someone else a title shot.  The thing is though, like yourself I'm something of an old-school kinda guy, and part of that old school includes things like Paying Your Dues and proving your worth, showing that you belong in the spotlight.  It's this same reason why I'm not a fan of the WWE tag division right now, the titles are always going to singles stars just thrown together (like Big Show/Jericho) while the established teams like Cryme Time, The Harts, and Legacy are spinning their wheels.  Sheamus, like I said he looks good, I like him, he has a future, but right here and right now he hasn't done enough to be in the World Title circle.

I don't know why people seem to be down on Sheamus/Cena, it's going to be something different than Cena/Orton every other month. We all know Sheamus won't win the championship and he shouldn't at this stage of his career but I really am digging what he's doing at the moment, think it was the wrong move for him to walk away from Cena though, he needs to be a dominant heel not one that backs out of a fight.

I went to see him early in his career for Irish Whip Wrestling and he was a beast then too, out of all of my favourite up and comers I like his chances the most. Glad Drew McIntyre's getting a fair shake too, it's just a shame about Carlito, Benjamin and a couple of others that should have made it to the main event scene by now.

I'm glad WWE's finally decided to try and elevate new stars, we only got the odd few every now and then before but now it seems everyones getting a shot, which is awesome. John Morrison and Miz's singles pushes are also doing them wonders. I do think we need more wrestling on the shows though, more wrestling, less Vicki Guerrero, Jillian singing, Hornswoggle rubbish. It may have entertainment in the name but that craps just not entertaining. Actual wrestling is.

I dont think JR is a jerk. He is my favorite announcer of all time. I just think its "odd" that he makes time and has the desire to travel all over for the Sooners games and appearances, but cant be bothered to show up at Raw in Dallas.

Yes he is my favorite announcer of all time, and widely considered the best of all time, which I also agree with, but I dont see his passion for WWE anymore...just the paychecks they supply him. He's more passionate about Barbeque Sauce and College Football then WWE, so it seems. I cant totally blame him, considering how lame WWE has been recently, and some of the stuff they have subjected him to over the years, with all the humiliating skits and garbage like that.

I wish he would move on to TNA already. WWE has the young nerds on commentary now and "Cawler" on Raw..whats he gonna do? Have the Mean Gene Okerlund role and host Vintage Collection? Go to TNA man, you would only have to fly about 3 times a month and you'd only have to work every other week. Plus Dixie and Spike pay pretty good from what I hear.

Hey, Logan: Why do you visit JR's site, much less sign up for an account and login, if you think he's such a jerk?

JR looks fine. I have seen him on TV the past week or two on the sidelines of the Sooner games on ESPN.

Logan, you forget JR has Bells Palsy.  He probably doesn't want to show up at RAW with his face the way it is and deal with the boys reactions, be it over sympathy or whatever.  Why show up at work if some of the staff might overreact and think JR's worse off than he really is?  I wouldn't equate wanting to lay low with the co-workers with some lack of interest in the WWE product.

Not attending Raw in Dallas?

You seem to have no problem driving to Texas for a Sooners game, or hopping on a plane to see the Sooners play, or making in store appearances, but you cant drive down to Raw in Dallas where your restaraunt is catering the food? I guess that shows your interest level in WWE if it doesnt have a signed check attached to it.

I met Jesse Ventura a few years ago and had the pleasure to chat with him for about 5 minutes. One of the things I talked to him about was his time in WCW. He told me something that I will always remember. He said, "Jim Ross only cares about Jim Ross, selfish guy"

The WWE crew is heading out to Iraq again for the 7th year in a row to show support to our Military, for the Tribute to the Troops show.

How many times have you went to Iraq/Afghanistan with the WWE in the past 7 years Ross?

First of all..I have a doctor's appointment on Monday that will prevent me from making the drive to Dallas. I did not mention that because I didn't think it was any one's business at this point in my medical process.  Secondly, I am not involved with the show so I assume by your line of thinking I should just drive down and "hang out in the back."  Thirdly, Ventura should be an expert on thinking of one's self. For Jesse Ventura to say that I only think of my self and that you took him at his word is laughable. To survive as long as I have in this biz one has to protect one's backside because of boorish politics, etc but I have always been a team player and have always prepared for our broadcasts which is something that Ventura can't honestly say. Not sure what your issues are nor do I care but any issue you may have of me not traveling to Dallas to watch wrestling is not overly intelligent. I do plenty of viable, WWE work to "earn my check" from my home office,  for the record.  Finally you make the Iraq trip an issue. Another uninformed statement. I have volunteered on numerous occasions to attend. Those offers have never been accepted due to space limitations on the military plane. I would love to go and have never or will never turn down the chance to make that trip. Usually one 1 announcer makes the trip and he doubles as a WWE.com contributor. Michael Cole has been doing this based on his experience of doing hard, news on radio. I hope this clears up some of your mis perceptions especially the one about Ventura's asinine statement.
