Sitting in the Cleveland Airport trying to blog on my Blackberry and I hope I don’t “tap.”
Unforgiven was an intriguing event...had its moments....gave some talents a chance to perform on the main stage....and it was interesting to see how the 3 Scramble bouts could have their own unique identity.
The show was fun to be a part of because of all the above. On a scale of 1-10 I would give it a solid 7, which equates to value for the price of admission.
- Brian Kendrick had an excellent night even without Zeke. To think of where Kendrick was only a few months ago and where he is today is encouraging.
- Jeff Hardy had a good night and “felt” like a big star. Perception becomes reality in wrestling and I definitely perceive Jeff as an ever evolving star.
- MVP’s night might not have jumped out at some, but he was solid and still looks like he could potentially be a WWE Champion. MVP needs to get his edge back and “get on a roll,” which he has the skills to do.
- Shelton Benjamin is “gold” pun intended. This athlete is a physical freak and can be as good as he wants to be. My regular visits w/ him tell me that he wants to elevate and more importantly stay at the next level.
- HHH is one of the established, legit Superstars on Smackdown, who has plenty of potential opponents on SD. HHH adds considerable credibility to the brand.
- Congrats to Matt Hardy. His BIG win may be overdue in some folk’s eyes, but this passionate, dedicated young man achieved another milestone.
- ECW is really getting fun to watch w/ all the youth on their roster.
- The Orton dynamic with the 3 2nd generation wrestlers interests me. (Yes I know that Orton is a 3rd generation kid.)
- Jericho winning the World Title completely changes much of the dynamic on Raw. Jericho’s surprising title win was the highlight of the final bout.
- HBK vs Jericho was “money” and the best thing on the show. Sitting at ringside it was amazing how physically stiff the bout was. I would have LOVED to have broadcast that one.
- Finally, Tazz is the angriest man in America :) but I enjoyed our call of the WWE Scramble bout. I hope you did too.
I’ll have more from Milwaukee soon. It looks like I am going to have to break down and purchase a laptop. Or can I thumb my way thru this challenging “Blackberry Jungle?”

S'up JR
Hey JR, thanks for posting your thoughts. I agree, 7/10, very solid PPV, made better by the young fresh faces in the main event. JR, down the road, I'd love to see WWE employ some hybrid matches. Can you imagine TLC Scramble or Hell in a Cell Scramble? That would be a true spectacle (as if the original versions alone weren't to begin with!) The Scramble adds the element of multiple pinfalls and a race to the finish that makes it really exciting.
I would also like to see some Scramble matches for IC, US, even Women's titles. Instead of 5 minute intervals they could be 3 (for these lower title defense Scramble matches) so maybe we can get the odd 12 minute Scramble TV match here and there. It would be a perfect way for a credible US Champion to gracefully drop the belt (without being pinned) while moving himself into the World Heavyweight title scene (i.e. Shelton Benjamin)
On a final note, I just watched Evan Bourne and Rey Mysterio ABSOLUTELY electrify a RAW audience. This is proof that cruiserweight action can sell in the WWE. The problem with the CW division before were that most of the CW's WWE had were ground-based. If WWE built the division around high flying and mat-based wrestling, then we would have a winner potentially. I still hope the CW Belt comes back some day, but I won't hold my breath.
A quick correction, if I may...Ted DiBiase Jr. is a 3rd generation wrestler. His step-grandfather was 'Iron Mike' Dibiase and his grandmother was wrestler Helen Hilde.
Unlike some of the other commentators I was thrilled to see Jericho win, as it has been too long since his last reign. I just regret the booking "logic" of how it was done, and the fact that he seemed to "need" to be a heel in order to win the big championship. I too expect Y2J vs HBK, but not until WrestleMania.
Yes, Matt's title reign was over due. Unfortunately, Jeff's is STILL overdue. But the match resolution indicated he is still in the chase, which is certainly a good thing.
Hello JR
The World Tile Match Sucked. Who was theidiot behind putting Y2JACKASS as Champion. All I know is Thank God For HBK being on Raw. Cause i'll tell you Right Now if HBK wasn't on I definately would not be watching Raw At all. Raw sucks. Only match worth anything was HBKS match Last Night. Won't watch Y2JACKASS at all so do you know what happens when he comes on. I turn channels. How's HBKS Injury Jr? Miss you JR.
Vicky Guerrero is indeed one of the most hated figures in WWE nowadays and The Big Show will become one of those soon, it's amazing how easily The Big Show can switch roles always getting excellent results.
All things considered, I thought the finish to the World Heavyweight Championship match made not a lick of sense. CM Punk is out with an injury, so they sub in a guy who was so hurt by HBK that he couldn't even defend himself?
Makes no sense whatsoever and makes the World Heavyweight Championship look lately like a title that is won through blind luck, rather than real skill or talent.
DiBiase is third gen, Manu only second gen.
Sorry for the typo "PHYSICALLY STIFF" comment
Please explain your "physically stiff" reference in the HBK/Jericho match paragraph. I've never heard that before. I wish you could have called that match too. I miss you with Jerry. Totally agree - that was the best match on the card.
I didn't think I'd like the "scramble" matches but they proved to be entertaining; especially the Trips/Hardy countdown. Priceless timing.
What was Vince thinking putting Jericho in the title match and have him win like that? Perhaps he is setting up a Jericho/HBK title match at No Mercy. Let HBK have one last title run. REALLY retire and get into the HOF 2009.
Thanks for your wonderful insights. I look forward to them always.
Aren't Ted "Priceless" Jr. and Afa "Manu" Jr. 3rd Generation wrestlers as well?
Congrats to your Sooners JR!
They played a great game.
Unfortunately for me, my Bearcats just didn't have the size needed in the trenches.
Of course, loosing Grutza could be a devestating blow to the rest of our year, but we'll see what happens.
Take care and Go Cats!
