Wednesday Update...Most Stupid People in Sports...Rock on ESPN...Lesnar's Back!

Posted in:

Thanks for stopping by here at mid week. Let's get this BBQ'ed show on the road.

My WWE.com Smackdown blog will be posted alter today. I invite you to check it out as I have changed the format of it somewhat.

As I predicted yesterday, Wednesday morning UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar announced that he was recovering from a painful bout of diverticulitis and colon problems and will return to the Octagon "some time this summer." Always remember that bad news press conferences occur on Fridays. Having suffered diverticulitis myself along with severe colon issues I can tell you how much pain that ailment produces. I had what I felt was a run or the mill stomach ache for weeks but refused to complain about it  publicly or miss Monday Night Raw because of a "stomach ache." That's being too hard headed and old school even though I was raised by a tough Dad who would have spun in his grave if he thought his son was going to miss work due to having a stomach ache. Nonetheless I let the matter go too far, which I would simply guess is perhaps Brock did as well, and when I finally got diagnosed I was 30 days away from dying and two weeks away from having to have the dreaded bag attached. My large intestine had perforated but like an idiot I tried to "work thru it."

Knowing Brock's background as a hard working, tough, country boy who rarely complained about his health, I can only imagine how long Lesnar had diverticulitis before it was discovered.

Lesnar wasn't stripped of his title which is a smart thing by UFC officials but I must ask why does UFC need an "interim" heavyweight champion to be decided in March while Brock is saying that he will be ready to go in the Summer? I don't get it.

Hopefully Frank Mir and his ticket and PPV selling mouth will be Lesnar's opponent in what would likely be one of the more compelling fights of 2010 especially if we fans get to hear both men verbally express themselves. Mir's sharp tongue has elevated his perception of the talented fighter's game as he "gets it" as far as how to promote a fight. MMA purists can blast pro wrestling all they want but Mir is doing pro wrestling shtick when he talks about his opponents and what Mir plans on doing with them. I like it but I also liked it when Muhammad Ali did it years and years ago. If Mir loses to Shane Carwin in March, Lesnar fights the dangerous Carwin and Mir can do more promos lobbying for the rubber match with the former WWE Champion and NCAA Champion.

Brock Lesnar is a lucky man and I am thankful that he is going to be able to live a normal life not to mention resuming his UFC fighting career. Lesnar found his niche in UFC and is tailor made for the fastest growing, legitimate sport in the world. People love  to pay to see heavyweights, always have and always will, and Brock Lesnar is THE heavyweight in the eyes of many MMA fans today. (Fedor is also a bad ass but how bad we may never know unless Strikeforce can quickly develop some viable, PPV selling heavyweights. Fedor could have answered all our questions in UFC. )

Why is Herschel Walker fighting for Strikeforce on January 30? That's easy...because he's Herschel. Herschel is a different breed of cat. Read his latest book about his multiple personality disorder for more info. The former Heisman Trophy winner is "unique" to say it politely and nicely. Obviously Walker is an amazing athlete and at 47 he will be in great shape and will likely open some eyes with his preparation and natural athletic skills. After we all see Herschel fight,  we will likely be saying that it's too bad that Hershel Walker didn't have his first MMA fight before he was 47 years of age OR we might simply roll our eyes and declare that Strikeforce got us with a well crafted,  strategic, publicity stunt. Nonetheless, trust me, when I say that Herschel Walker is a uniquely gifted athlete who is one of the most eccentric individuals one will ever meet. Not that it's a bad thing....remember, I've been a member of the pro wrestling community for 36 years.

Got a great email from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson this morning as he is hitting it hard promoting "The Tooth Fairy" which opens in theaters this Friday. We will be checking it out this weekend without question. Rock will be all over ESPN on Thursday and I expect him to cross paths privately and on the air with Rock's former WWE colleague Jonathan Coachman who now dons the broadcaster chair in Bristol for ESPN. Perhaps Rock will entice Coach to "dance the Charleston" as he once did on Monday Night Raw.

Rock is one of our biggest fans of our BBQ Sauce (Loves the HOT) and the Chipotle Ketchup which is the best ketchup known to man, if I don't say so myself.

Loved it on Letterman when Dwayne said that he would always be "The Rock" which was not only true but had to make wrestling fans around the Globe feel good. I don't ever see the Rock wrestling again but I know that he will host Raw sometime in the future to reconnect with his fans and to promote his latest project. I also know from the communication that Rock and I have that he still loves the business and most importantly the fans of the business who always support his film projects. There is no more positive person that I communicate with than is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson which is extremely refreshing.

Believe it or not we had some fans from Australia fly to Dallas and then drive up to J.R.'s Family BBQ in Norman, Oklahoma recently. I was in town too and I wish I had known that they were there. That was our staff's fumble and hopefully something like that won't happen again. I love meeting the fans when they visit our joint as I will do on March 1 when Raw is in OKC. I'll also be in the store Thursday at lunch time.

Nice feature on Dan "Waylon Mercy" Spivey on WWE.com's "Where are They Now?" I will tell you that the Waylon Mercy persona was one of my absolute, without question, favorite, all time characters ever in the business. Dan "The Left Handed Man" Spivey is also known to be one of the legit tough guys ever in the biz and if the late Road Warrior Hawk were still with us today he would say amen to that.

Did you know that Minnesota QB Brett Favre was not only a New Orleans Saints fan as a kid growing up in Kiln, Mississippi but he was also a fan of Mid South Wrestling and loved JYD, who didn't back then, but also the rebellious, Fabulous Freebirds and occasionally attended matches at the Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi?

On WWE 24/7 On Demand as we speak is a bout between Verne Gagne vs. George "Scrap Iron" Gadaski from 1974. Two quick points, check out how good the former two sport, University of Minnesota star Gagne was and see Gadaski who was Ric Flair's first ever opponent if my memory serves me correctly.

Man, did boxing screw boxing when the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight fell through, for now, or what? What big pro fights are out there that the public is clamoring to see? There are none. Boxing is close to becoming non-relevant and if they don't start making hot, young stars ASAP then boxing as many of us know it will be dead. When was the last time that boxing created a new, major star specifically in the heavyweight division which carried the sport on its shoulders for generations?   The stupidest people in sports may well be boxing promoters if one bases their intellect on the future of their business.

Whether one wants to help with the relief efforts in Haiti or not is one's on personal choice but I do and here's one crazy idea. A Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament featuring WWE Superstars, WWE Personalities and Celebrities from outside the WWE world on  a televised poker tourney. I'm all in!

I plan on attending the 2010 Cauliflower Alley Club function in April in Las Vegas and hope to see many of you there. If you are not a member of CAC but are a fan of the biz, then you should join the organization which extends a huge heart and helping hand to those from within the business and without fanfare. The good folks at CAC don't break their arms patting themselves on the back. One of the best times that I ever had was a couple of years ago when I attended the CAC with Steve Austin and Bret Hart was honored. Fans are in hog heaven at CAC and why any one that can attended doesn't is mind blowing to me. I hope to see many of you there and check out the CAC website for more info. This event is affordable and a must attend for all fans, I can assure one and all.

Congrats to the Friday Night Smackdown crew for a record setting TV rating last week for the broadcast headlined by Batista vs. Mysterio inside a cage. Striker and Grisham are on fire!

We updated our Q&A's early today and invite you to check them out.

One emailer wanted to know if I would some day write my autobiography and if I did would it be with WWE or do it independently so that I could essentially "tell the truth." I have asked for more info from this individual on what truths I would need to omit if I penned a book with WWE as this person must know much more about my life than do I. My overwhelming preference would be to do the book with WWE and to simply tell my story as best I know how. Every day of my career hasn't been a bed of roses, whose life is, but I can assure any one that wants to listen that I have had MANY, more great days than negative ones in my 36 years in the biz. Nonetheless writing one's autobiography is a deeply personal matter and if I do embark on such a journey I will need a researcher and plenty of help in telling my story as I won't do it or even attempt to write a book if it isn't accurate and I refuse to write a "fluff piece."

So, the jury is still out on the book but I can assure that I have some unbelievable stories starting with my first road trip in the mid 70's. The territory days were aka the "Wild West" while the refining of the corporate side of the business provided even more unique and provocative stories. My various jobs in the business have also provided me with plenty of ammo regarding some of the biggest names in the history of the business...some not so flattering...and isn't that what most folks want to read about...the underbelly of what ever one is writing about? Sad but true.

I promised to not reveal the name but a well known wrestling star just ordered a case of Chipotle Ketchup from this website.

Life is good and I am getting excited to watch the Royal Rumble match on PPV from my old, home base of Atlanta and only wish that I was going to be a part of it but I will definitely be there in spirit. Atlanta will always hold special memories for me and some of my most trusted, long standing friends still reside there.

Please take a stroll through our on line store and I hope to see you if you're in our neck of the woods at J.R.'s Family BBQ in Norman. Be well every one and always count your blessings.

Boomer Sooner!

J.R.

This is good site to spent time on .I just stumbled upon your informative blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your very well written blog posts. I will be your frequent visitor, that’s for sure. wedding dresses/ bridal gowns

i am dying too taste that ketchup and beef jerkey god jr please ship to ireland

Hey Jr,

I gotta say that I enjoy the heck out of these things ! They keep me busy in class when we have to read a book for the first 10 or so mins. I usually fly on over to the IWC or a dirtsheet that posts these things and read it. Honestly you're a very interested man and I'd be interested in a book, especially with your opinions. I think most smarks would be. Thing is you get us wrong, I know for a fact that most of FTMOCR already has a good idea on WWE politics and background info not at detailed as you I imagine. That's really not the point I know that we would eat that thing up, I honestly hope for a nice thick read from you. Well thanks for reading a smarks comment, good luck, get well soon and I know it sounds dumb coming out online and even worse to a stranger but , God Bless

-Jedidiah Young

Hi JR,

   I like your idea to hold a poker tournament featuring WWE personel to raise funds for Haiti.   I'd have to make you the odds on favourite considering you must have one helluva poker face!   I suppose that's one of the very few positive results of your battles with Bell's Palsy.

   Great idea and I'd like to see it happen.

My Wrestlemania XXVI card along with creative inputs for the road to Wrestlemania:

1: Ladder match with BOTH the ECW championship as well as WWE Intercontinental championship on line:

CM Punk Vs. Drew McIntyre

* Put the ECW strap on Punk

* Get a ECW vs. Smackdown (OR Tiffany vs. Theodore Long) feud going, culminating in this match; there's ample time to get the angle red-hot come wrestlemania.

* Try choreographing the match with imagination a la the shawn-razor ladder match from WM X.

* Motivate both guys to try n better Bret Vs Owen as the best WM opener of all time.( Of course, it's highly unlikely they will, but still..this should inspire them to give it their best. Both have the potential to deliver a good opener.)

Winner: Drew McIntyre

2: Unified tag-team championship match:

The Legacy (Champs) vs. The Hart Dynasty (w/ Natalya)

* Put the belts on Legacy any which way, given new tag champs are needed for WM now that DX is set to split so that HHH & HBK can have singles matches at WM.

* Get Dusty Rhodes, Ted Sr., Diana Smith & Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart in attendance to add a slice of history to this showdown.

Winner: The Hart Dynasty
Anvil & Diana come to the ring to congratulate HD; Anvil calls out his former partner and other half of the original and legendary Hart foundation- Bret. Bret comes out to the ring, pats HD and they all raise their hands in triumph as the next generation of Harts establishes themselves firmly as worthy successor to carry the legendary Hart legacy in the new decade; a Wrestlemania moment!

3: Insert ANY match for the women's championship match & get it over soon; I, for one couldn't care less, though would love to see the belt on Melina.

4: U.S.Championship match:

The Miz (c) VS Sheamus

* Let Miz win the brief feud he's got going with MVP, solidifying his credibility as the US champion while elevating MVP, too.

* Sheamus drops the belt to Orton at RR; has a mini feud with Kofi for the #1 contendership for US championship, which he eventually wins.

Winner: Sheamus

* Booking Sheamus to win the belt at WM ensures he proves that he's for real and his brief championship reign earlier may have been fortunate but not a fluke.

5: 20 men "battle royal" for MITB:

1- Rey
2- Kofi
3- Bourne
4- Swagger
5- MVP
6- Batista
7- Danielsen
8- Chris Masters
9- Shelton
10- The Great Khali
11-Morrison
12- Regal
13- Jackson
14- Christian
15- Kane
16- Goldust
17- Haas
18- Big Show
19- RVD
20- Mark Henry

Final 4: Kofi, MVP, Morrison, RVD

Winner: Morrison (or RVD, if you prefer established ones to upcoming)

6: One Last Time: (No disqualification match)
The Game Triple H Vs. Mr. Wrestlemania HBK Shawn Michaels

* HHH breaks HBK's wrestlemania dream to face Undertaker again at WM by throwing him off the ropes at RR; HBK returns the favour later in the match, costing HHH the Rumble match setting up a feud.

* Later on differences crop up leading to DX losing their tag titles to The Legacy.

* HHH blames HBK for the loss, stating that he's lost it, he's mellowed down what with making up to every one from Tyson to Bret Hart (a couple of tense backstage encounters between HHH n bret would only spice up the angle further as it's common knowledge that HHH too was on in the montreal screwjob and has legit heat with bret), he's no more the showstoppa that he once was. HBK answers this insult with a resounding superkick signalling the end of DX and a return to vintage Shawn Michales- the icon, showstoppa, main event, Mr. Wrestlemania avatar.

* At next RAW, HHH pedigrees Hornswoggle signalling the return of the mean and ruthless The Game. (Horny disappears from the scene for a few weeks only to make a surprise return at the grandest stage of 'em all).Make sure to book HHH in such a way so that he looks more of a pissed off anti-hero than an outright heel.

* Build the feud so that HHH is looking for retribution from HBK for costing him the rumble while HBK looking to prove that he's not lost the fire within.

Winner: HBK

* The ref is down, when Triple H goes looking for his trusted sledgehammer under the ring. Not finding it at the appointed place, HHH returns to the ring and prepares for pedigree when, out of nowhere, Horny emerges and delivers a sledgehammer low-blow to HHH from behind. Sweet chin music does the rest. Mr. Wrestlemania n Horny do a crotch chop on the beaten HHH. ONE LAST TIME!

(Alternate ending: A pissed off HHH gets hold of the sledge hammer and lays 'em both waste and pedigrees both of 'em twice and then proceeds to leave with a resounding message that the mean HHH is back. Something similar to the ending of Bret Vs. Diesel Survivor Series '95 match, so as to make sure neither men look weak. Also, this end allows HBK to take time-off which he would, reportedly.)

7: Twelve Years in the making "Kiss My Foot/Public Apology" match(Given WWE is PG, besides the fact that Bret can not possibly take a full fledged hard bump otherwise I'd have liked nothing better than a no holds barred bloody I Quit match like the one Bret n Austin had at WM13)

Mr. McMahon Vs. Bret "The Hitman" Hart

* Build the feud as Vince as the clear egomaniacal heel out to kill the legacy of the legendary Hitman while Bret trying to save it and get the retribution for the Montreal Screwjob (along the lines of the gladiator- Maximus Vs. the emperor Commodus), in the process, proving not only to the world but to himself as well that he STILL is "the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be"

* Bring all that Bret has gone through in life since the Montreal Screwjob- Owen's tragic death, pre-mature end to career due to a concussion, family disputes, stroke, death of friends n peers, etc.

* Bret signs on the contract despite his doctors advising him not to risk another head injury.

* Show montages of Bret training hard for his final swansong (a la Rocky Balboa)

* Get Vince inflicts a final assault on Bret's leg at the last RAW before WM so as to cover for Bret's lack of speed in his match. Bret has to sell the injury even at Hall of Fame while inducting his dad and also when he comes out to the ring earlier at WM to congratulate HD.

Winner: Bret Hart

* Bret comes out in pink n black ONE LAST TIME, gives his shades to some kid just like he used to in his heydays and carries McMahon to a good, if not great match, ending in an extended sharpshooter, thereby proving once and for all, that he STILL is..THE ****in' best there is, was and ever will be!

8: Triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship:

Randy Orton (C) Vs. Chris Jericho Vs. Edge

* Orton wins the champship at RR beating Sheamus.

* Jericho wins #1 contender after a mini-feud with Batista at SD.

* Get Edge into the mix somehow (I don't care how)

* Heat up the feud as a heel-heel-face triangle with actual run-ins n altercations between Orton n Jericho on the road to wrestlemania while Edge keeps appearing via sattelite building up his much-awaited return at the grandest stage of 'em all.

Winner: Chris Jericho (by pin-fall over Orton)

* Jericho DESERVES the belt more than ANY one else, for he indeed is THE best at what he does across all brands at the moment. He deserves to be decorated for the jobbing streak he's been through at the hands of DX off late at RAW and still making all that crap look entertaining.

* Also, this result would come as a surprise as most IWC would be betting on the returning Edge to win the title.

* In addition, this opens up so many various feuds like Jericho- Orton (rematch), Jericho- Edge, Edge-Orton.

9: WWE Championship match:

The Undertaker (C) Vs. John Cena

* Undertaker retains his championship at Rumble beating Rey; Cena wins the rumble; opts to go after Undertaker instead of Orton due to the "streak" factor.

* build up to this match should be the usual Undertaker mind games, Cena getting intimidated for once, initially but then showing up, not backing down.

* show Cena secretly taking tips from Bret regarding the best strategy to counter the height factor, as bret was the master of taming the giants in his day. This makes sense as Cena is the 2010 version of Bret, character wise. Also, this could go a long way in putting Cena over with 18-35 male smarks demographic, a group which detests Cena, unlike the kids.

Winner & NEW WWE champion: John Cena ending the streak.

* Choreograph the match on the lines of Bret Vs. Diesel S.S. '95 i.e. Undertaker putting Cena through extreme punishment, Cena looking dead right before he's about to eb piledrived finally, when he, out of the blue, rolls the phenom for the shocking pin!

* Undertaker initially looks pissed but then comes along to hand it to Cena, lifting his hand to the world, thereby putting Cena over with the fans who might not be agreeable to the ending of the streak.

*Cena calls out Bret and thanks him for his guidance.

*WM ends with Cena and Bret hands aloft basking in glory, giving fans of both the noughties as well as 90's, moments to cherish, besides lending some much needed credibility to Cena's character in the eyes of adult male smarks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~XXX~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(PS:The streak SHOULD end & end while the phenom is still capable of coming up with a good match 'wrestlingwise' and it should end at the hands of someone who still has 7-8 years of active wrestling to offer to the company and should be credible enough. There are only two names that come to mind: Cena and Jericho (Edge, with all due respect, doesn't cut it with me). I am okay with both of 'em. In fact, I'd have liked Jericho ending the streak better but then, this is a great opportunity to get Cena over with even the non believers, "provided it's booked right"
In the end, Sorry for posting this at your blog but I couldn't think of a better way to get my ideas across to WWE through a more influential medium than you. Hope you won't mind it, Sir.
Regards
Love your blogs, Don't be like Flair, Hardy, and Hogan. You should always be on WWE programming, need you back on raw though. Please don't ever leave and go " down south". Love ya J.R.
All your fans in Orlando.
Hey, JR - thanks for pointing us to that Gagne/Gadaski match.  The AWA of that era was utterly compelling - I happened to live in the Chicago area and was glued to my TV whenever wrestling was on.
It's great to see that Gagne's matches are STILL utterly compelling - Gagne was so good at "opening up" every move he made - he had tremendous showmanship while carrying out very intense technical wrestling.
I was privileged to have seen a number of WWE house shows at the time that Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit were having matches and those matches had a similar character - 2 men that just got in the ring and went at it with tremendous intensity and tremendous technical expertise - and enough showmanship that they were able to make it completely compelling for the audience.
I'm hoping that we'll get to see Dick the Bruiser & The Crusher from that era of AWA wrestling on 24/7 - they were tremendous characters and the closest equivalent to Stone Cold Steve Austin of any 70's wrestlers that I've seen - 2 fan favorites that kicked the ass of absolutely anybody that got in the ring with them in a wonderfully entertaining manner.
I'm really thrilled Brock is healthy and going to be able to fight again.   This is probably the best news I've heard in recent memory, as all the news lately seems to be pretty bad.
I agree with you 100% about Mir.  He does fantastic "heel" promos, which I think is the reason my friends hate him so much, and I like him so much.  It's also fantastic to see he's dedicated all his energy, since being beaten by Brock, to doing whatever it takes to be able to compete with him.  This will make one Hell of a rubber match.
Hi JR!
I was looking thru your products-- and Im not sure what to order-- everything looks soo yummy!! I have a little girl who loves to dip everything in BBQ sauce, so you're gonna have a life long customer here... I was wondering what sauce you'd recommend for her...something not too spicy (hot). I dont like giving her the over processed BBQ sauce that could sit on the grocery shelves till 2030. Please let me know what you recommend for her chicken and steaks -
Also, just reading thru I saw you tried to work thru with a perforated intestine!!?! Im a nurse.. Dont try that at home JR... Im glad you made it thru that one tough guy..I bet that was not a fun trip to the hospital.. God Bless.
~M
PS If WWE had any sense they'd have you and Steve Austin back at whatever cost and their ratings would go thru the roof.
I must say, I resented The Rock for quite some time after he retired and went to Hollywood. Then again, I was probably 11 or 12 years old at the time too. Thinking about it now though, I really respect Rock for getting out and STAYING out of the ring. Not too many people do that in the wrestling business now days. And now that he's out, he doesnt bad mouth wrestling either. Of course, you've been saying this kind of thing about Rock for years.
Glad to see Lesnar won't be living the rest of his life carrying around a colostomy bag. Also, glad to hear that even at 60% he could still win and defend the UFC heavyweight belt against the best MMA has to offer. He's always a money maker when he steps into the octagon and I can't wait to see him fight again.
 I'm really glad Brock Lesnar looks to be coming back, I enjoy UFC as it is but Brock adds something unique to it being from WWE.
Oh and I couldn't agree with you more about boxing, they need to do something, I suggest remove all these managers that delay fights etc. UFC has done a great job and really showed what a fighting company should look like. I personally love the UFC. Great read on your blog too J.R.
I guess UFC's Interim titles is their version of a "#1 Contender" that counts toward a title reign if they beat Brock, which sounds like a cheap way to add days to said reign.
I'll sign up for that poker tournament in a hearbeat, here's to hoping the WWE will go with it and let you host it at the restaurant since you thought of it first!
couple of comments:
have you seen dwaynes movie "doom" ? I personally think this is his best movie (i'm biased as an oldschool computer gamer) but this movie is badass anyway.
the royal rumble IMO is the best PPV, aside from MAYBE surviver series but rumble probably has it topped.
and why does UFC have an interim title? it's easy - it's for EXTRA PPV BUYS! they will make 25% more money if they can tout the PPV as a 5 rounder instead of a 3 rounder, it's just a "paper" champ though, we both know Brock is the real champ. and for the record, my money would be on Brock if he fought Fedor, and my money is ALWAYS the smart money.
