The film was about the life of the late comedian Andy Kaufman that I had a small role in playing, shock, as a wrestling announcer. Jerry Lawler and the real Andy Kaufman became great friends during their wrestling rivalry in Memphis that culminated with Lawler slapping the fire out of Kaufman on the David Letterman Show. During the filming of this movie, Carrey refused to answer to his own name and insisted he be called “Andy” or “Mr. Kaufman” during the entire filming of the movie even by the cast and crew. Famed director Milos Foreman, an Oscar winner, even had to call Carrey “Andy”. Carrey stayed “in character” for the entire filming of this movie. Jim Carrey is a hugely talented performer but one strange dude. I will share some Jim Carrey stories with you in the future.(There’s some “out there” Courtney Love stories from that experience too.) I saw the movie again just the other day on cable.
HEY!!!! Just have to correct you so people arnt confused and go rent the wrong movie... and believe me, its a HUUUGEE difference. Its "Man on the Moon.... not to be confused with what you wrote above "The man in the moon" which is a terrible Reese Witherspoon DRAMA from 1991. yep I just started the movie and thought... ughh what is this crap! So.. readers be warned LOL!! Have a great day Mr. Ross! Your the best!
Jerry Attorney 1z0-051 exam and the etch Andy Dramatist became zealous friends during their,70-290 dumps sport rivalry,in City that culminated with Lawyer slapping the render out of Kaufman.
In Jerry "the King" Lawlers book, "It's Good To Be The King....Sometimes"' He doesn't seem to know what to make of Jim Carey either, but says that Andy never acted weird around him, and I think Jerry spent a good amount of time with him in wrestling......
Hey JR.
I saw the film Man on the Moon when it first came out and it was AMAZING! Jim, like Andy, COMMITTED to character with a capital C, which, no doubt, lent to some great stories on-set, and off, especially when TONY got involved. What I wouldn't give to read Jane Carrey's (Jim's daughter) journal during that time! Would LOVE to hear your 'BEHIND THE SCENES stories. Incidentally, I'm sure Courtney Love was probably the ONLY actress who could have done a verbal one on one with Tony Clifton and come out with CLIFTON weeping!
Funny thing, though, is that Andy was pretty much doing the same thing Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart and most other wrasslin' 'HEELS' did...he was ACTING while keeping his own name, so many people assumed he was serious.
I have "I'm From Hollywood" and it's wild! Interviews with Robin Williams, Marlilu Henner and Tony Danza (Taxi) as well as Bob Zmuda. Thing was, Andy was just doing what he wanted to do. He loved pro-wrestling and I THINK (could be wrong) he understood the theatrical mechanics of the arena of SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT better than most fans, then or now. And even a few of the stars who take themselves TOO seriously. Lines like "I was just playing 'bad guy' wrestler" and "It was a great day for Behavioral Science" suggest that the writers of the movie understood Kaufman's take on the whole performance.
Jimmy Hart and Jerry Lawler were GREAT sports about it and were thrilled that a t.v. personality wanted to get in on the fun! To this day, it's still up for debate as to whether Andy actually suffered a neck injury as a result of the pile driver. And there was talk that Jim had suffered some sort of injury until it was revealed that Mr. Forman wouldn't let Jim take part in the stunt and his stand in did the deal.
If he were alive today, I'm pretty sure Andy Kaufman would have been a writer with the WWE, at least during the Hulk Hogan days.
Shame Heenan and Monsoon weren't covering THOSE matches!

So, was Jim Carrey as nuts as everyone said he was when making this film?
I saw this film just a few months ago after reading about the whole Jerry Lawler and Kaufmann feud, and it really does tell a story - not your typical wrestling film. I did wonder when it was made though, but I'm glad I know its name now!
