Fun weekend that included a quick overnight trip to Kansas with the Sooner football team leaving on Friday afternoon, staying Overland Park and then busing over to Lawrence on Saturday where the Sooners beat the Jayhawks in a Big 12 football game.
OU plays undefeated Texas Tech this Saturday and somehow OU is favored by 7. Is it Vegas insanity or am I missing something? Tech should be favored in this game in Norman.
Thanks to being on the team charter flight I got home in time to watch the last round of the Melendez vs. Sanchez instant classic #UFC166 from Houston. Good Lord what a fight. Daniel Cormier, as I predicted, easily beat hard hitting Roy "Big Country' Nelson and then the unthinkable happened.
Just as I was immersed in the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos Heavyweight Title fight my cable signal for the PPV froze. No audio...no nothing.
I missed the last two rounds and obviously the finish along with the post fight content. Cox Cable is going to credit my account which I appreciate but nothing can replace seeing the end to the Octagon war LIVE between two of the most intense, toughest human beings that I've ever seen fight.
@UFC staffers should be commended for producing such a stellar event. Great booking, real, believable, organic storylines that made the matches make sense all contributed to a superb event in Houston. Plus, the live crowd was loud and emotionally invested of which I could hear in my living room. That makes all the difference in the world. When UFC broadcasters don't have to fight to make themselves heard over the live audience, it loses something for me.
If more promotions listened more intently to their paying customers like the UFC apparently does, companies selling tickets to their events would experience more success.
When organizations stop listening to their consumers, trouble and a general malaise is on the way. Live audiences tell decision makers what they like or do not like every night that there is an event. Not listening to them or over thinking those reactions is arrogant and blatantly ignorant.
We hope to be in Vegas for UFC's December PPV as it's another loaded card. Looking for a little R&R time.
On a different tangent, and just my two cents, another kiss of death in the pro wrestling business is to drape the comedic cloth over a talent and allow him/her to wrap themselves in "humorous attire" so to speak. When did a comedy act ever headline a major event ala WrestleMania?
Comedy acts screams 'prelims' and TV show 'filler.' Organic comedy is a completely different animal but attempting to write comedy and then have an untrained actor/comedian pull it off without the audience rolling their eyes is challenging....at best.
Another pet peeve...too much coffee this morning, I assume, allowing wrestlers to wear jewelry while competing is a joke. Necklaces, earrings, etc helps destroy the illusion of reality. If it were a real fight, why wouldn't a smart aggressor use those cosmetic accompaniments to their advantage. I never had the stroke to make that call, I did discourage it, but if I ever did those pieces of jewelry would be left in the locker room. (Yes...I'm old school but common sense and logic aren't out of style.) Lastly, how does jewelry contribute to a wrestling match?
Big night for WWE tonight on RAW as they countdown their next PPV, Hell in a Cell. General thoughts include:
World Champ Del Rio needs as much momentum as he can get before facing the returning, face of WWE John Cena for the World Title. Cena's absence hasn't been that long and I wouldn't see him live on TV until the PPV. ADR needs all help he can get ASAP to be able for Cena to be perceived in some level of jeopardy. Heroes who are not in jeopardy or in danger of losing don't move the needle. Cena's surgically repaired arm should be a talking point for the announcers and for ADR. (Perhaps a cross arm breaker fit for a King??)
The contract signing between Orton and Bryan should not be over thought. It's the blue light special. An angle alert. Fans expect fireworks and they should be provided such. Another question is fan support of Bryan to begin to wane in his role of the undersized, overachieving underdog? Fans of heroes have to maintain 'hope' that their guy can get it done in a fair fight. It's simple, human nature/psychology.
If Shawn Michaels is on RAW tonight then he should be better utilized than last week. A HHH-HBK confrontation in virtually any form would be good TV and it all ties into the Bryan-Orton HIAC match for the WWE Title.
What's left to do that is compelling in the Heyman-Punk saga? I love their work but really need to see something compelling and memorable tonight. Knowing those two, we will get it.
If WWE can focus on three, top line issues on this RAW all leading to the PPV then they will have done their work. Trying to hard to create interest at this late date in under card bouts that aren't going to sell PPV's isn't advisable from my perspective.
What opportunistic villain will attempt to 'notch their gun' in Memphis against local, long time hero Jerry 'The King' Lawler? What's the over/under on the mentions for King's Tunica museum? This will be King's favorite RAW of the year because he doesn't have to travel. Hopefully, Jerry's entrance will make the WWE App, if you know how to download it, or elsewhere. It might be one of the biggest "pops' of the night.
Someone on Twitter said that I wouldn't admit it if I watched the TNA PPV Sunday night. Wrong, Einstein. However, I did not watch their show as I was watching the Manning vs. Irsay Bowl on NBC plus my regular Sunday night fare including HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Eastbound and Down.
However, if any company changes five titles in one show, which one is supposed to standout to the average fan? Apparently that's what occurred. Sounds like TNA hit the "reset" button on the whole shooting match. No dog in the hunt except for my many friends who work there and I'm pulling for them and their families.
Did you know that warm, JR's Chipotle Ketchup makes a great steak sauce? This isn't your grannies ketchup, kids. Use your microwave to heat up a small amount and give it a try.
Our Beef Jerky is made in Oklahoma by a nationally, award winning member of the smoked meat hall of fame...I kid you not. JR's Beef Jerky is not mass produced and because of that has great flavor and is made from high quality eye of round. It's 97% Fat Free and a great snack. JR's Original is the money but we sell a great deal of Peppered and Teriyaki, too.
